In the season premiere of the Saas Expert Voices podcast, Randy Wootton, CEO of Maxio, speaks with Todd Gardner, Managing Director at SaaS Advisors and founder of SaaS Capital. Randy and Todd discuss the current state of the capital markets for SaaS companies and the recent deceleration in the growth rate of SaaS companies. Todd emphasizes the value of three key metrics for fundraising: growth, profitability, and retention. He explains that while growth has traditionally been the most important metric, retention is now taking precedence and stresses that SaaS companies need to focus on improving their gross revenue retention and be intentional about their growth and profitability strategies. Todd also encourages companies to test the market for fundraising opportunities, as capital is still available for the right companies.Quotes“Gross takes out the effects of cross-selling and price increases and even some usage-based increases. And gross is believed to be, and I think a more pure measurement of the stickiness of the revenue stream. It's not clouded by some of the things that can be included in net retention.” -Todd Gardner [09:38]“It is really hard to do a pivot in a high-growth SaaS business where there's been an enormous amount of capital invested in the future potential. So a pivot in that case turns into a recap. No investor wants a recap. But if you are looking at the reality of under single-digit growth and not being able to get profitable and running out of cash, it's a come to Jesus moment.” -Randy Wootton [20:12]Expert Takeaways Retention is now a top priority for investors, and companies need to focus on improving their gross revenue retention.Growth, profitability, and retention are the three key metrics for fundraising, with retention currently taking precedence.SaaS companies should be intentional about their growth and profitability strategies and pick a lane to avoid being caught in the middle. It is not a bad time to raise capital, as there is a lack of quality SaaS companies in the market and a significant amount of capital available.Timestamps[00:00] Randy's Intro [01:14] | Todd's Intro [02:28] | Productive time for focused SaaS companies to build their product[04:45] | SaaS valuations have regressed to the mean[07:00] | Growth, profitability, efficiency, and retention [11:19 | Logo retention and ACV are important factors in retention analysis[13:03] | Burn ratio and profitability as key metrics for SaaS companies[18:21] | Death Valley: Getting out of the low growth, low profitability [19:37] | Pivot or Recap: Options for companies with low growth[21:41] | Testing the market for fundraising opportunities[23:52] | Importance of clarity in value creation plan for funding[24:00] | Contact Todd GardnerConnect MAXIOUpcoming EventsMaxio Institute ReportRandy Wootton LinkedIn

Friday, March 10th, 2023 - a moment in B2B Technology and Start-Up ecosystem history that many will never forget and hopefully provides a foundation for learning the risks and rewards of venture-backed, early-stage entrepreneurship.Todd Gardner founded SaaS Capital in 2007, the industry's first "recurring revenue credit facility".  Before names like Salesforce, Workday, and Snowflake were well-known names, Todd experienced the financial crisis of 2008 and experienced firsthand the impact of a systemic banking issue including the meltdown of his financial partners. Our goal for this episode of the podcast is to provide practical insights and advice that SaaS founders, CEOs, and CFOs can apply to decrease the risks associated with their financial related decisions and banking decisions. We started with the basic, summary facts surrounding the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank (SVB):December 31, 2022, SVB financial disclosure:  - $209 B in total assets - $175.4B in total depositsMarch 8th: SVB disclosed a $1.8B loss on the fire sale of $21B in long-term assetsMarch 8th - 10th: ~ $42B in deposit withdraws were made by SVB customersFriday, March 10th: SVB was declared insolvent and closed by U.S regulatorsSunday, March 12th: U.S. government including the FDIC, US Treasury, and Federal Reserve announced that all deposits (100%) would be backstopped - made good because SVB had more than enough assets to cover the outstanding liabilities, primarily customer deposits. Essentially the US government is managing the risk which is primarily a "time-based" issue versus a balance sheet issue.Todd next provided an industry backdrop that lead to the run on SVB. Due to the accelerated ramp of venture capital investing in 2020 - 2021, the deposits on hand at SVB doubles. As standard bank operating practice, SVB invested a significant portion of those deposits in long-term bonds and treasuries, which had a low return due to the low-interest rates of the moment.During the second half of 2022, interest rates began to increase dramatically, and the result was that the value of the long-term bonds decreased in value. Simultaneously many customers were moving their deposits at SVB into higher interest-rate instruments outside of SVB - forcing SVB to sell some long-term assets to support the decrease in deposits.Due to the above macroeconomic interest rate dynamics, coupled with the short-term issues created by a handful of Venture Capital firms quietly recommending their portfolio companies move their deposits out of SVB.We next discussed the "financial ecosystem" that has been the foundation that fueled the amazing growth of the technology industry which includes:  - Over half of the technology start-ups banked with SVB - Over half of Venture Capital firms in technology banked with SVB for Capital Call - Line of CreditHaving the primary source of assets and liabilities from the same industry ultimately becomes a material issue for SVB.The above is a backdrop to the insights and advice that Todd shared for how this experience can inform future financial and banking decisions by SaaS founders, CEOs, and CFOs which include:#1: Diversify banking relationships including checking, savings, and credit facilities                  - have at least 2 banks and/or treasury based money-market account#2: Understand the banking relationships that your payables and payroll firms use#3. Maintain fiscal discipline throughout the start-up journey to change the narrative from "cash runway" to ongoing operating profit as early as possibleIf you are interested in learning more about the Silicon Valley Bank collapse and what it means to the financial strategy of SaaS CEOs and CFOs going forward, this conversation with Todd is a great listen.

SaaS Capital - I have always loved that name and followed their B2B SaaS Research for many years.Todd Gardner was a founder at SaaS Capital, which helped lead the early days of "Debt Lending" for SaaS companies. Most recently, Todd is now the principal at SaaS Advisors assisting both SaaS companies and SaaS investors during the financing process.During Todd's career, he has reviewed thousands of SaaS income statements and balance sheets which positions Todd very well for the business and financial impact of Usage-Based Pricing (UBP) for B2B SaaS companies. The first topic we discussed was "What is Usage-Based Pricing"? The concept is pretty basic, aligning pricing to the value received by the customer. This concept has been used in other consumption-based industries, such as gas, water, and cellular phone bills. How does UBP impact the traditional use of subscriptions? Approximately 50% of SaaS companies using a Usage-Based pricing model also include an annual subscription as part of the pricing structure....a hybrid model. One interesting aspect when using a UBP + Subscription model is what is included in the subscription versus being purely usage-based charges? One of the challenges of a Usage-Based Pricing model is the increased challenge of revenue forecasting - which was one of the benefits of the traditional SaaS subscription model. Todd highlighted there is a trade-off in pricing between simplicity and value alignment. By having a hybrid Usage-Based Pricing model, there can still be the predictability of the subscription model while still having the opportunity to increase revenue as value increases for the customer. Is there a history of Usage-Based Pricing in a software subscription model? In the spirit of all things being circular, the original use of UBP was in time-sharing, which was a popular software application usage model in the 1980s. One of the challenges in that phase of subscription software was once usage increased to make the monthly cost-prohibitive or after a couple of unexpected large invoices from higher than normal/expected charges. Todd highlighted that with the introduction of the Customer Success organization, coupled with the use of product analytics, a SaaS vendor can stay in front of sustained "larger than expected" invoices and even use increased usage to re-structure the agreement to either "cap" overage usage and/or decrease the per-unit cost in consideration of a larger commitment.Todd recently conducted research that identified 6 product attributes or leverage points that suggest considering a Usage-Based Pricing model:1. Lower in the technology stack products (infrastructure, databases, tools, platforms, etc.)2. Application products that have a high Cost of Goods Sold basis 3. Use of the product is directly linked to business value (payments, eCommerce)4. Self-provisioning products (think Product-Led Growth)5. Growth and intensity of usage (high growth, heavy usage-based products)6. Value is driven by automation - such as integration/API based productsTodd has a unique perspective on the SaaS industry, informed by reviewing and lending to 1,000's of SaaS companies, and his recent research on Usage-Based Pricing across the SaaS industry is the basis for an information-packed conversation.

JavaScript Jabber celebrates its 400th episode with former host Dave Smith and some other familiar voices. Each of the panelists talks about what they’ve been up to. Dave hasn’t been on the show for 3 years, but he and Jameson Dance have started a podcast called Soft Skills Engineering where they answer questions about the non-technical side of engineering. When he left the show he was the director of engineering on Hire View, and currently he works for Amazon on Alexa.  Christopher Buecheler has been on several JSJ, RRU, and MJS episodes. His time is divided between contracting for startups and his own company closebrace.com, a tutorial and resource site for JavaScript developers.  Dan Shapir has also been on JSJ as a guest, and is currently works for Wix doing performance tech. He enjoys speaking at conferences, such as JS Camp in Bucharest, Romania and the YGLF conference. Steve Edwards was previously on MJS 078. He started on Drupal in the PHP world, switched to JavaScript, and then a few years ago he started looking at Vue. Now he does Vue fulltime for ImageWare Systems. As for Charles, his primary focus is the podcasts, since DevChat.tv produces around 20 episodes per week. 5 new shows were started in July, and he talks about some of the challenges that that brought. One of his most popular shows recently was JSJ 389: What makes a 10x Engineer? This helped him realize that he wants to help teach people how to be a successful engineer, so he’s working on launching a new show about it.  The panelists share some of their favorite JSJ episodes. They discuss the tendency of JSJ to get early access to these fascinating people when the conversation was just beginning, such as the inventor of Redux Dan Abramov, before their rise to stardom. The talk about the rise in popularity of podcasting in general. They agree that even though JavaScript is evolving and changing quickly, it’s still helpful to listen to old episodes.  Charles talks about the influence JavaScript Jabber has had on other podcasts. It has spawned several spinoffs, including My JavaScript Story. He’s had several hosts start their own DevChat.tv shows based off JavaScript Jabber, including Adventures in Angular and The DevEd Podcast. JavaScript Jabber has also been the inspiration for other podcasts that aren’t part of DevChat.tv. There aren’t many podcast companies that produce as many shows as they do and they’re developing their own tools. DevChat.tv moved off of WordPress and is in the process of moving over to Podwrench. Charles talks about all the new shows that have been launched, and his view on ‘competing’ podcasts. Charles is also considering doing an audio drama that happens in a programming office, so if you would like to write and/or voice that  show, he invites you to contact him.  The show concludes with the panel talking about the projects they’ve been working on that they want listeners to check out. Christopher invites listeners to check out closebrace.com. He also has plans to write a short ebook on unit testing with jest, considered doing his own podcast, and invites people to check out his fiction books on his website. Dan talks about his involvement with Wix, a drag and drop website service, that recently released a technology called Corvid which lets you write JS into the website you build with Wix. This means you can design your user interface using Wix, but then automate it, add events functionality, etc. Dan is also going to be at the Chrome Dev Summit conference. Episode Summary Todd Gardner is a software developer, podcaster on the show Script and Style, startup founder,  and comedy host for Pub Conf, a ‘comedy after party for developers’. Since he was last on the show 6 years ago, he has seen his startup TrackJS become quite successful. TrackJS is a JavaScript error monitoring service which gives you visibility into your client side experience. It’s different from other tools because focused on simplicity, so you’ll never need a guy on your team dedicated solely to TrackJS because everyone can use it. The panel begins by talking about debugging methods and tools. Some rely solely on the debugger built into their platform while others prefer to use a third party service. They discuss the necessity of using a third party debugger and if there are better solutions than just the built in debugger.  They then discuss what to do after you’ve fixed a bug, such as if it is necessary to write a test to make sure it was completely fixed They talk about things to do to make debugging more effective. Todd and Aimee believe that code needs to begin by being designed for debug-ability.  The panel discusses issues with invisible boundaries encountered while debugging, such as running out of memory. They talk about ways to mitigate issues that happen outside of your code base. Todd talks about the dangers of ad-blockers, and the panel agrees that it is important to consider how your website will be crippled by the user’s own technology. The end user in a production environment will have a different experience than you did writing it on a professional computer.  Todd talks about the difference between debugging for the web versus a mobile application. Todd has encountered particular problems with debugging on a remote device, and he talks about how he solved the issue. How does testing contribute to the failure of a project? Todd Gardner chats with Carl and Richard at NDC Oslo about his experiences with failing projects and testing. More than just the usual case that a lack of testing led to unreliable software, Todd also talks about how testing the market is important too - what if you build software nobody wants? The focus has to be on relevant tests, because every test represents an overhead of computing and maintenance. This ultimately comes back to understanding the value proposition of your software: What does your software do that is valuable, and how do you assure that value with testing?Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/net-rocks/donations

As a young boy he was inspired to pursue the Music & DJ industry while spending his free time at his uncle's entertainment company. As Manic grew older, he was determined to take his DJ skills to the next level. He was so drawn to this profession, the only place you could find him was analyzing music, mixing and refining his art. It only took a few club appearances for him to earn his nickname: "Manic". The name Manic describes him well because of his unique style: combining a blend of skill, ability to read the dance floor and dynamically control the energy. His particular taste in music allows him to be diverse, exciting and on the cutting edge.As co-producer of the song “Never Ending” along with Ronnie Ventura and Alan Scott Plotkin featuring Latrice Verrett, it debuted at "Hot Shot Breakout" ( #31) on the Billboard Dance charts. Ten weeks strong on the charts, “Never Ending” climbed to #25. Manic once again teamed up with Ventura and Plotkin to co-produce other hits including, “The Freaks” featuring Latrice Verrett and “Music Is Your Life” feat. Dana Devine both which were signed and release on Nuuf Music. With influences from Danny Tenaglia, Sandy Rivera, Dennis Ferrer, Satoshi Tomiie, Louie Vega, David Morales, and Erick Morillo, Manic's DJ sets take the listener on a musical journey through deep and minimal to tribal and vocal house with latin and percussive Afro elements that are guaranteed to make the dance floor groove in perfect unity.
