Grow My Accounting Practice | Tips for Accountants & Bookkeepers to Grow Their Business
Show Summary: In this episode of the Grow My Accounting Practice podcast, Doreen Binkiewicz, founder of DGL Business Solutions and Certified Profit First Professional, dives into the vital components of exit planning and succession strategies for business owners. She explains how these strategies are not necessarily retirement plans, but rather a way for owners to harvest the value of their business when the time is right. The key, according to Doreen, is making sure that the business is transferrable—meaning it can operate independently of the owner—ensuring long-term value and success. Doreen highlights the critical difference between "business attractiveness" and "business readiness." While business attractiveness refers to how appealing a company looks to outsiders, business readiness focuses on internal operations and the company's ability to function efficiently without the owner. Both elements play a crucial role in determining the real value of a business and its ability to sell or transfer ownership. Doreen also touches on the importance of financial allocation, a concept central to Profit First principles, where money is separated into different accounts, much like Mike Michalowicz's money envelope system. This helps business owners manage their natural spending tendencies, building profitability and business value. By meeting clients where they are—whether they are exploring, pivoting, or triggering—Doreen emphasizes the importance of clarity, liquidity, and legacy in crafting a long-term, winning business strategy. Jason Snider is the Founder and CEO of Aspyr Advisors, a bookkeeping and business advising firm. He's also the Co-founder and Managing Director at Summit eCommerce Advisors, an accounting firm supporting e-commerce professionals. Twenty years in the accounting industry exposed Jason to the challenges e-commerce entrepreneurs face utilizing traditional accounting, and it inspired his vision to create improved solutions. Additionally, as a Certified Profit First Professional, he coaches entrepreneurs by providing them with the tools needed to scale their businesses. In this episode… Bookkeeping is essential for operating a profitable e-commerce business because it helps owners organize and access their finances, plan an annual budget, and understand their financial health. And while it may be cost-effective to do your own bookkeeping, not having thorough accounting knowledge could cause your company to lose money. So how can entrepreneurs manage their company's finances like an accounting professional? Regardless of the method used to log company spending, business owners should habitually review their financial records on a monthly basis. This allows for monthly comparisons and identifying areas where additional spending or cuts may be beneficial. Jason Snider, a certified accountant, recommends using a reliable accounting system such as A2X to accurately track the cost of goods and other data input. Another method for properly managing company funds is implementing a Profit First system. This accounting strategy aims to help small businesses improve their cash flow and profitability by setting aside a percentage of revenue as profit before paying expenses. In today's episode of the eComm Breakthrough Podcast, Josh Hadley welcomes Jason Snider, Founder and CEO of Aspyr Advisors, to discuss innovative e-commerce bookkeeping. Jason shares common bookkeeping mistakes, methodologies for tracking and reconciling the cost of goods, and expounds on the Profit First strategy and how to execute it. How much does your auto repair shop charge for an accurate diagnosis made by an A Tech in 15 minutes? How much for the same diagnosis, made in 4 hours by your best B Tech? This week, we revisit my conversation with Brian Hunnicutt about the doubt that shows up quite often in every auto repair shop owner's mind: how to set rates that make justice to the value they provide. Brian shares his perspective as an Executive Coach and Certified Profit First Professional on why most auto shop owners rarely charge diagnostics properly, why they have the weird feeling of ripping their clients off when charging what they should, and how the automotive industry as a whole should deal with this issue. Additionally, Brian explains how to tell apart clients who want their cars fixed from those who want to spend the minimum possible, shares three questions he came up with to keep the front counter and the technicians in alignment, and much more. Profit is something I get really excited about because it's one of the most forgotten topics in entrepreneurial circles. Most people are so revenue focused or - if they are in the online space - they are crazy about scaling. Profit is left as an afterthought, and it's also the most misunderstood. For example, the business I worked with made about $3M in revenue but ZERO profit. They thought the answer to their profit problem was 10X their revenue. Essentially, more work would equal more revenue, and more revenue would equal more profit. This is NOT true. It's rare that I sit down with a business owner and not have conversations on these topics. So, I'm super pumped to share some of my thoughts about what you need to increase your profitability. As a matter of fact, I love profit so much that I'm a Certified Profit First Professional because I know it IS the holy grail and will give my clients exactly what they want the most: To accumulate real, tangible financial wealth over a lifetime. These business owners are less interested in chasing revenue for revenue's sake and more concerned with making intentional and discerning decisions about how they run their businesses and leverage their money. Danielle and Cyndi Thomason, an expert certified in Profit First at the mastery level and the author of Profit First for E-commerce Sellers, explore the critical role of inventory in determining the success of your business. Cyndi shares valuable techniques for managing inventory levels and emphasizes the importance of maintaining distinct accounts. They will also investigate the advertising budget, highlighting the recommended percentage allocation for this aspect. This episode offers valuable insights and practical advice for ensuring the profitability of your business. IN THIS EPISODE: [01:27] Cyndi talks about why inventory can be a serious pitfall for a business, why you need an inventory account [08:51] Looking at each product you sell to determine how to price [11:39] Cyndi shares the importance of inventory days and getting creative to move stale inventory [15:39] She explains why inventory cash flow is different from your operating expenses and the part advertising can play if not managed well [19:27] Pay attention to the return on their advertising spend and how to figure the percentage you should spend [26:45] Cyndi shares the downfall of integrating your accounting system with your inventory KEY TAKEAWAYS: The key to operating a business where inventory is involved is to allocate funds so you don't have to borrow money to buy stock. Sales are lost when you run out of inventory. Good record-keeping through accounts prevents that from happening. Be very careful of how much you spend on advertising. It is an expense that can quickly get out of hand. “Working more doesn't always equal more money..” – Jayden Doye About Our Guest Jayden Doyé was not always the financial guru that he is today. Growing up in a household, just shy of the federal poverty line in Prince George's County, MD he knew the importance of money management, but didn't have the tools to create the financial stability he so desperately craved. Graduating Towson University with a B.S in Accounting & incurring a large amount of debt, Jayden was determined to make a change. With a little hard work and A LOT of sacrifice, Jayden became independent, gained professional growth as an accountant at a small CPA firm in Atlanta and became a Certified Public Accountant. Over the past five years he's worked with clients in just about every industry-helping them not only expand their financial portfolios, but to create plans that ensure financial sustainability & minimize taxability. During the first two years of building his own CPA firm, Prestige Accounting Solutions, Jayden discovered his niche- professional service providers. He realized that many sought after the lifestyle he lives which includes living debt free, a monthly mandatory vacation & delegate/elevating a team to operate a profitable business that does not require the owner's full attention. During his second year of business, Jayden became a Certified Profit First Professional & now he teaches the Profit First method to business owners which guarantees that their business generate profits. As a CPA, Jayden's goal is to help entrepreneurs like as himself, gain independence, eliminate debt, and create unique action plan to bring more to their bottom line while paying less in taxes. Episode Summary This episode is powered by the Move to Millions Book It's no secret that if you are a business owner, you intend to operate a business that generates a profit. I mean seriously, profit is how we keep score in business. Yet, surprisingly, most small business owners (those with less than 500 employees as classified by the IRS and SBA) do not make substantial profits each year. Depending on the source you site, 4.2% of all small businesses make seven figures a year in gross receipts but it is much harder to determine what number actually make a profit. My guest, Jayden Doye, is on a mission to change the statistics for service providers nationwide. Through sharing his own personal journey from poverty to profits as a CPA, Jayden offers a powerful roadmap for service providers who want to build businesses that serve them and offer them the freedom, finances and flexibility to travel.
