After announcing her pregnancy via her iconic social media personalities, the "city girls", comedian Shannon Fiedler is heading back out on the road for her Pregnancy Brain tour, kicking off January 25 in Minneapolis, and hitting Denver, Portland, Seattle, Beverly, San Francisco, San Diego, before wrapping things up in NYC in April. Fans can expect a night of laughs delivered with the social media star's trademark wit, enthusiasm, and spot-on understanding of what makes millennials laugh out loud. Fiedler recently debuted her first stand-up special, Thirty, Flirty, & Crying, September 25, via YouTube. The dynamic hour of humor was produced by Hoff Studios, along with a female run production directed by Laura Lucchetti and Executive Produced by Jayme Yarow. Thirty, Flirty & Crying is a smart and sometimes silly exploration of what it means to be a woman who's recently turned that number after 29. With riffs on such universal topics as the horrors of dating, the pressures of ordering the right wine, and the inherent dangers of using public restrooms, Shannon strikes multiple chords with both male and female fans alike. The overarching theme of, "I'm too young to be this old," informs the hour, as Shannon shares glimpses of the path that has led her to being the very funny, and utterly likable woman she is still in the process of becoming. Shannon Fiedler is a New York based comedian, writer and content creator who has amassed over 500k followers on social media. Known for her relatable - albeit exaggerated - characters, Shannon distills ordinary situations to their most entertaining essence. In addition to touring the country performing, Shannon was named a Comic To Watch in the 2023 NY Comedy Festival, and her work has been featured on various media platforms, including BuzzFeed, Barstool Sports, Overheard New York, Betches, and Gratzia. Ever wondered if "pregnancy brain" is real science or just a convenient excuse for misplaced keys and forgotten appointments? The fascinating truth lies somewhere in between, and it's more remarkable than you might think.Pregnancy triggers measurable changes in your brain's structure, particularly in areas related to social cognition and emotional regulation. Far from being a deficit, these changes represent your brain's brilliant adaptation to prepare you for motherhood. Think of it as nature's way of helping you prioritize what really matters—your growing baby—while temporarily filing away less critical information. That feeling of mental fogginess has solid biological foundations. The hormonal tsunami of pregnancy, particularly those skyrocketing levels of progesterone and estrogen, directly influences memory and executive functioning. Combined with pregnancy-related sleep disruptions (midnight bathroom trips, anyone?), your brain faces genuine challenges. Yet these temporary cognitive shifts serve a greater purpose—they're rewiring your neural pathways to strengthen the connection with your baby. For those struggling with pregnancy brain, simple strategies can help manage the foggy moments. Writing things down (creating "outie lists" instead of keeping everything in your head), prioritizing rest, staying hydrated, and consuming brain-nourishing foods like omega-3s can all support cognitive function during this transformative time. Most importantly, embrace self-compassion and perhaps a sense of humor about those moments when you find yourself searching for sunglasses that are already on your head. The next time pregnancy brain makes you feel scattered, remember it's not a flaw—it's a feature of your amazingly adaptive brain preparing for life's most important job. Subscribe for more insights on maternal health, and share your own pregnancy brain stories with us—we'd love to hear them!

Pregnancy is a hugely transformative experience, both in how it can change someone's day-to-day life, and how it affects the body. There's a key part of the body that's been under-researched in relation to pregnancy: the brain. Those who have been pregnant often talk about “pregnancy brain,” the experience of brain fog or forgetfulness during and after pregnancy. There's also the specter of postpartum depression, a condition that affects about 1 in 7 women post-birthing. There's still a dearth of information about what causes these cognitive, psychological, and emotional experiences. In a recent study, scientists took MRI scans of participants before, during, and after pregnancy, and spotted distinctive changes in the brain's gray and white matter. While these anatomical changes are noticeable, the researchers are still trying to determine what they actually mean for behavior. Joining guest host Kathleen Davis to talk about this study is Dr. Liz Chrastil, associate professor of neurobiology and behavior at the University of California Irvine.Transcripts for each segment will be available after the show airs on sciencefriday.com. Your diagnosis doesn't have to determine your outcome. As we conclude our four-part series on pre-eclampsia, Parijat Deshpande, a somatic trauma professional, shares how to heal from trauma. In this episode, we chat about: What is a somatic trauma professional and what led you to that profession? How does your book, Pregnancy Brain, empower parents, especially those who are high-risk or find themselves in the NICU? If a woman finds herself in a high-risk pregnancy, is there anything she can do to minimize the trauma she may endure either during delivery, or post-birth? Why are you so passionate about serving the BIPOC community? You've said you want pregnant women to know they aren't at the mercy of statistics. Those statistics can often feel overwhelming and limiting to a NICU mom, particularly one who has been diagnosed with pre-eclampsia. How can a mom process those emotions, address them and move forward in her pregnancy? If a woman suspects she has pre-eclampsia or is diagnosed with it, what should she be asking her doctor? Many women fear a pregnancy post- pre-eclampsia. Two part question: 1) if she chooses not to have another baby, how can she heal from the trauma her first pregnancy may have triggered? and 2) if she chooses to move forward with another pregnancy how does she do it without being debilitated by fear and anxiety? What's your best advice to a woman diagnosed with a high-risk pregnancy, like pre-eclampsia? Parijat Deshpande is an author, speaker and the CEO of a global, boutique company dedicated to reducing pregnancy complications and ending preterm birth. On a mission to end the high-risk pregnancy crisis, she has served and supported hundreds of women through her programs, one-on-one work and bestselling book, Pregnancy Brain: A Mind-Body Approach to Stress Management During a High-Risk Pregnancy. Today's episode is a quite literal look into the brain of a 38 week pregnant woman, including the tornado of emotions that comes with it. Rachel shares her experience over the past week, from feeling anger, to contentment, to fear, to happiness and an entire spectrum of emotions within an hourly span (even getting mad at her husband over tuna salad!). As Rachel prepares for labor and tones down her daily engagements, she notices how this pregnancy has connected her to the earth and a more simple way of living. She even shares her entire makeup routine (okay, it only takes two minutes) and why she is throwing all of it out the window. At the end of a hard day, we can still recognize how much room there is for gratitude in our lives - and how much our minds trick us into thinking otherwise (especially when pregnant). Tune in for an episode on the ups and downs of life that will make you laugh at the truth behind it. "You breathe. You blink. You digest. You don't tell your body to do those things... Your body will know how to give birth. The mind-body connection is SO STRONG. The mind can influence the body..." A.L. Adriana Lozada's background is multi-layered and multi-cultural. A former print and online editor from Venezuela, the birth of her daughter sparked her passion for being a birth advocate, leading her to open Birthful: a company that helps new and expectant parents take on whatever maternity sends their way. She is a certified Advanced Birth Doula (DONA International), a postpartum educator, and a healthy sleep consultant, as well as a bestselling author and international speaker. Adriana is also the host of the Birthful Podcast, where she talks to amazing, knowledgeable, and passionate birth professionals every week, to help new and expectant parents inform their intuition, so they can have more rewarding pregnancy, birth, and postpartum experiences. "After giving birth, Adriana became passionate about helping others on their maternity journeys. The fire to make a difference started from a place of outrage (have you noticed the broken state of maternity care? the non-existence of paid family leave in the US?), which she has since focused into a torch that lights her way towards supporting new parents to have joyful and satisfying birth and postpartum experiences. Adriana is an advanced birth doula, an eco-maternity consultant, a postpartum educator, and a child sleep consultant. She's a bestselling author, speaker, and host of the acclaimed Birthful podcast. All part of her quest to help people have a smoother transition into parenthood." Have you ever felt betrayed by your own body, or mystified about why it doesn't "work" the way you want it to despite all of your best efforts? What if you had the innate power to manage parts of your own internal biology? And what if it wasn't mystical or magical? Join me in a discussion with Parijat Deshpande as we discuss the mind-body connection, and how stress management can work "miracles" on your physical health - not just your mental health (spoiler alert: they are the same thing). Her book: Pregnancy Brain: A Mind-Body Approach to Stress Management During a High-Risk Pregnancy, is so good that I highlighted something on every single page (while saying "mmhmm!" and nodding to my highlighter like it was a good friend). Even if you are not pregnant, or ever plan to be, this interview is a woo-woo-free portal into the world of mind-body healing. Buckle up!Get the book! Find Parijat on Instagram
When I was pregnant, my once AMAZING memory became horrible. I forgot the simplest of things! Many of you have heard of "pregnancy brain," and just like me, will argue down anyone who tries to say that it does not exist. You know what? Christians have a similar forgetfulness, and during crazy times like this election season we are in, we panic, we stress, we become overly political and sometimes we fall into culture, hook line and sinker, forgetting who we truly belong to. Yes, we're citizens of this United States, but we're also citizens of another very special place too! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/marlena-rice/support
