While growing up in Freiburg in South Germany, Joy Alpuerto Ritter started dancing at the Ballettschule Armin Krain, and learned Philippine Folk Dance in the cultural dance group led by her mother. After training at the Palucca School in Dresden, she started working as a freelance dancer in Berlin—her current base—and learnt urban dance styles such as hip hop and voguing. In 2011, Joy joined Cirque du Soleil as a dancer and aerial artist for the Michael Jackson Immortal World Tour, and since 2013, she has been a dancer and rehearsal director for Akram Khan Company, dancing in works including 'ItMoi' and 'Until the Lions'. Now, Joy is focusing on creating her own choreographic works. Her solo 'Babae', a reimagining of German dance pioneer Mary Wigman's 'Witch Dance', was shown as part of Aerowaves Springforward festival in 2020, and has toured extensively around Europe at festivals including Dance Umbrella in London. After speaking to Joy about 'Babae' numerous times for post show talks, I couldn't wait to invite her on the podcast to delve deeper into her journey into dance, the many different styles she's trained in over the course of her career, and her dreams for the future.

In the eighth installation of "Offstage and Unbound," The Music Center's President and CEO Rachel Moore chats with Akram Khan, founder, artistic director, choreographer and dancer of the Akram Khan Company. Akram Khan is one of the most celebrated and respected dance artists today. Khan has been the recipient of numerous awards throughout his career including the Laurence Olivier Award, the Bessie Award (New York Dance and Performance Award), the prestigious ISPA (International Society for the Performing Arts) Distinguished Artist Award, the Fred and Adele Astaire Award, the Herald Archangel Award at the Edinburgh International Festival, the South Bank Sky Arts Award and six Critics’ Circle National Dance Awards. The Music Center On Location is proud to present Akram Khan's 'Until the Lions' as part of the Glorya Kaufman Presents Dance at The Music Center 15th season.
In this final episode, Akram Khan explains the origin and development of his first full-length solo piece, the autobiographical DESH, which took him and his team of close collaborators including Tim Yip, Jocelyn Pook, Michael Hulls and Karthika Nair to Bangladesh, the homeland of his parents. He then reveals his intention to create one last solo work. In closing, he describes how the experience of choreographing a section of the London 2012 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony altered the way he looks at creation.
In this second episode, Akram Khan describes his fascination with learning about the science of movement and the similarities and contradictions of ballet, contemporary dance and kathak. This exploration leads to the development of his signature style and the creation of a short solo followed by a more substantial piece that attract media and public attention. Akram comments on his jewel relationship with Farooq Chaudhry, producer and co-founder of Akram Khan Company, and his collaborations with Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Israel Galván, Juliette Binoche and Sylvie Guillem.
In this first of three episodes, the celebrated British choreographer-performer Akram Khan talks about his very early training and performing in kathak, the north Indian classical dance form. At the age of 10 he joins the acting cast of the stage adaptation of Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book, and at 13 he tours the world with Peter Brook's The Mahabharata. His return home at 15 is followed by an extreme and solitary journey into dance. While seeking admission to the contemporary dance program of De Montfort University in Leicester (UK), he discovers the work of Pina Bausch and DV8. This first exposure to contemporary dance leaves him shocked.
Snittet: Akram Khan.
