In this episode, we look at the life of Anson Burlingame, a well-known name  in California. During Lincoln's term as president, he was appointed Chief Minister to China, arriving in Beijing in the summer of 1862. Already well-known in the US as a fiery abolitionist and a man who believed everyone should be treated fairly and with all due respect, he sympathized with the Chinese government. When he arrived in post-Opium Wars, post-Treaty of Tianjin/Convention of Beijing China, he used his respected position among the diplomatic community of the treaty powers to fight for a fair deal for China. In a controversial move, he was appointed by the Qing government to lead a mission to the US and the great capitals of Europe to advocate on China's behalf. While in the US, Burlingame championed the signing of a treaty, the first of its kind, that recognized China as an equal sovereign nation. It opened the door to legal Chinese immigration and travel to the US. That ended up becoming the treaty's undoing.

Xin grew up in Beijing China in a religiously secular home. In her pursuit of science and engineering, she came to the United States for continuing education. It was upon her arrival to the US that she was introduced to Christianity. At the time, this was not a positive experience for her, and she continued to keep distance from Christian people. Eventually, she and her husband were looking for childcare in the Copper Country for their daughters. A place they had hoped to attend rejected them, and by the grace of God led them to the Early Learning Center at Saints Peter and Paul. It was here, then, that conversations about Christianity started happening again, and everything began changing. Listen to Xin eloquently tell her story of life and journey to follow Jesus.

Part two of Stu Levitan's conversation with his friend and former newspaper colleague Michael Dorgan, about his new book No Fight, No Blame: A Journalist's Life in Martial Arts. It is an absorbing read about a fascinating life which both general readers and martial arts aficionados will enjoy. And quite a life it has been in both those fields for Michael Dorgan, taking him from Richland Center Wisconsin to Beijing China as bureau chief for Knight-Ridder Newspapers and as a formal disciple to the most renowned Chinese internal martial artist of his generation, Hunyuan Taiji Grandmaster Feng Zhiqiang. And there were some pretty interesting – and frequently dangerous – journalism stops along the way as well, in places like Islamabad, Singapore, Hong Kong. Thankfully, his only arrest as a journalist was during the strike against Madison Newspapers in late 1977, for kicking the door of a VW bug filled with scabs plowing through our picket line. That's how I first knew Michael, as a colleague at the Capital Times and then the strike newspaper Madison Press Connection. With the strike doomed, Michael headed to California. As a journalist, he rose to become assistant business editor and Pacific Rim correspondent for the San Jose Mercury News. As a martial artist, he turned away from the Okinawan karate he practiced at UW-Oshkosh and the Korean Tae Kwon Do he studied here with Master J. B. Chung and pursued various styles of the internal Chinese martial art Taiji, or for those who don't speak Mandarin, Tai Chi.Among his Taiji teachers in San Francisco in the early eighties, Master Wong Jack Man, whose secret fight in 1964 with the soon-to-be-famous Bruce Lee looms large in martial arts folklore, with lingering uncertainty as to what really happened. Reverting to his journalistic identity, Michael published a major magazine article detailing, for the first time, Man's account of the fight, which was licensed and freely adapted for the 2016 film Birth of the Dragon. In 1999, Michael moved to China to become the Beijing bureau chief for Knight Ridder Newspapers, parent company of the Mercury News and at the time the world's second-largest newspaper chain. That's when he began studying with Grandmaster Feng – a practice that proved so important that in 2003 he took a leave of absence and remained in Beijing for a year and a half to train intensively with Grandmaster Feng and his disciple Master Chen Xiang. Which in turn caused a documentary about him to be filmed and broadcast on Chinese TV to a viewership of about 800 million. You'll hear more about all this in a few moments.Returning to California in late 2004, Michael returned to the Mercury News, as an editor in the business section. Until the business of newspapers got so bad that Michael left and devoted himself fulltime to his Hunyuan Martial Arts Academy of San Jose. An endeavor helped no doubt by Michael's designation in 2007 as an honorary instructor at the Feng Zhiqiang Martial Arts Academy in Beijing.Michael returned to journalism just this week, with a powerful opinion piece in the aforementioned Mercury News. Sadly, the headline tells a tragic tale: Cancer-drug shortage creates ‘death panels' for patients like me. And the sub-head: I'm deemed expendable as a national scarcity of life-extending chemotherapy medications has resulted in rationing.Because Michael has a mysterious metastatic cancer that has caused him to be cut, burned and poisoned with some progress but without a cure. So I've edited to tape to start with that part of our conversation, then we'll roll it back for talk of martial arts in the Bay Area and China, then reflections on the newspaper strike, and some closing thoughts. Here's Michael Dorgan, author of No Fight, No Blame – A Journalist's life in Martial Arts.

Xi Jinping has been anointed for a third term as president of China, cementing his position as the country's unchallenged leader. The appointment for what is a largely ceremonial role was expected -- but underlines the hold Mr Xi has over Chinese politics. We ask what he will do with his power. Also in the programme: an extraordinary phone call from inside a Tehran prison. The US-Iranian national Siamak Namazi speaks to an American TV network. We hear from his brother, appealing for Washington's help; and can a summit between the leaders of France and Britain make the entente more cordiale? Special thanks to Tortoise Media, Tom Macklin and the wonderful team at Kite Festival."Expressing oneself is a part of being human. To be deprived of a voice is to be told you are not a participant in society; ultimately it is a denial of humanity." www.aiweiwei.comAi Weiwei is renowned for making strong aesthetic statements that resonate with timely phenomena across today's geopolitical world. From architecture to installations, social media to documentaries, Ai uses a wide range of mediums as expressions of new ways for his audiences to examine society and its values. Recent exhibitions include: Ai Weiwei: Resetting Memories at MARCO in Monterrey, Ai Weiwei: Bare Life at the Mildred Lane Kemper Museum in St. Louis, Ai Weiwei at the K20/K21 in Dusseldorf, and Good Fences Make Good Neighbors with the Public Art Fund in New York City.Ai was born in Beijing in 1957 and currently resides and works in Berlin. Ai is the recipient of the 2015 Ambassador of Conscience Award from Amnesty International and the 2012 Václav Havel Prize for Creative Dissent from the Human Rights Foundation.A global citizen, artist and thinker, Ai Weiwei moves between modes of production and investigation, subject to the direction and outcome of his research, whether into the Chinese earthquake of 2008 (for works such as Straight, 2008-12 and Remembering, 2009) or the worldwide plight of refugees and forced migrants (for Law of the Journey and his feature-length documentary, Human Flow, both 2017). From early iconoclastic positions in regards to authority and history, which included Dropping a Han Dynasty Urn and a series of middle-finger salutes to sites of power, Study of Perspective (both 1995), Ai's production expanded to encompass architecture, public art and performance. Beyond concerns of form or protest, Ai now measures our existence in relation to economic, political, natural and social forces, uniting craftsmanship with conceptual creativity. Universal symbols of humanity and community, such as bicycles, flowers and trees, as well as the perennial problems of borders and conflicts are given renewed potency though installations, sculptures, films and photographs, while Ai continues to speak out publicly on issues he believes important. When Shlomo, an online marketing manager for a company that helps students, moved to Beijing, he was looking for a sense of community and familiarity. He found that in the Jewish community, which helped him give his Beijing House a feeling of home. The close-knit community offered him a support system, something that he was missing after leaving his family and friends behind in Israel. An internship program and learn Chinese program brought Shlomo from Israel to Beijing, Shlomo eventually became more involved in the entrepreneurship community in Beijing, led a meetup group with monthly events and weekly events of entrepreneurship, and built a company that helped foreign apps distribute into the Chinese market. Listen to Episode 32 of the Are we home yet? podcast, to hear how Shlomo created a business in Beijing China, became a financial coach, and how Israel means home to him. As an expat, Shlomo mentioned that figuring out how to get utilities turned on for a Beijing residence can be a struggle of being an expat. In Beijing, the apartment complexes are typically served by a central utility system that provides electricity, water, and other services to the residents. The utility system is usually managed by the property management company that oversees the complex. As a result, residents generally don't have to worry about paying for utilities individually.  A feeling of homeThere's more than just utilities that goes into giving a place a feeling of home. For most people, home is a place of comfort and security. It's a refuge from the outside world, a place where we can relax and be ourselves. But for some, home is a more complicated concept. For them, home isn't necessarily a physical place. Instead, it's a state of mind, an emotional space that we carry with us wherever we go. Take, for example, someone who grows up in multiple countries. They might not have one specific place that they call home. Instead, a feeling of home for some is wherever their family is. Or consider someone who has to move constantly for their job. For them, a feeling of home might be wherever they happen to be living at the moment. In both cases, a feeling of home is less about a physical location and more about a feeling of safety and belonging. So what does it mean to have a feeling of home? For Shlomo, it's about feeling like he belongs, like he's part of a community, and that home is in Israel, no matter where he goes with his family to live, several months out of the year. Financial Coach jobsShlomo is a financial coach and going to be giving a speech at a digital nomad conference in Bulgaria and is eager for his family to join him. Website flipping Website flipping is a great way to make money as a financial coach, which is something that Shlomo also does. There are a few different ways to do this, but the basic idea is to buy low-traffic website for a low price, improve it in some way, and then sell it for a higher price. This can be done by increasing the traffic to the website, improving the content, or adding new features. The best part of website flipping is that it can be done entirely online! So if you're looking for a way to make money as a financial coach, website flipping is definitely worth considering. https://arewehomeyetpodcast.com/beijing-house-a-feeling-of-home/ (If you want to know more insider knowledge about life in Beijing, being a financial coach, website flipping, tune in to episode 32 of the Are We Home Yet podcast and hear more from Shlomo!) The 2022 winter Olympics in Beijing China opens a few weeks from now, and the International Olympic Committee's 2015 decision to have China host the event looks ever more dubious.  Since then, it's become obvious to most observers that China, never a champion of human rights, is growing ever more oppressive. It's Communist Party leadership has become even more deeply committed to preserving its monopoly on power through state sponsored repression, surveillance, and indoctrination.  Witness its takeover of Hong Kong, the internment of Muslims in Xinjiang, the disappearance of tennis star Peng Shuai, its totalitarian social credit system, the Covid coverup and mounting threats to democratic Taiwan.  So why are democracies from all over the world moving ahead to send their athletes to a country so antithetical to their values? My guests for this episode provide a first hand and stark assessment as to why they should not. Chen Guangcheng, a Chinese civil rights lawyer, was imprisoned and under house arrest by the Chinese government for seven years for his human rights activism. Since escaping to America, he has remained a persistent voice for freedom, human dignity, and the rule of law in his native country.   Reggie Littlejohn, who as the president of Women's Rights Without Frontiers, has spent years campaigning against China's forced abortion policies. and Yaxue Cao, who grew up in northern China during the Cultural Revolution, and went to college at Peking University in Beijing. She founded DC-based ChinaChange.org to inform the world about human rights, rule of law, and civil society in China - aspects of China's political landscape that are the most censored and least understood.  China claims that the Chinese people “experience a broad, thorough and true democracy” and the China's National People's Congress “guarantees that the people are masters.”  To this Guangcheng responds “the Chinese people have never had a free election, the National People's Congress is made up entirely of the party's handpicked officials and the subject of democracy has been banned from kindergarten to university classrooms since 2013.” Surveillance and social control are pervasive.  Yaxue Cao explains, “If you speak any dissent on the internet, your accounts will be suspended or deleted. And not only that, policemen will quickly be able to identify who you are, and find you offline, and threaten you, sometimes take you away to the detention center.” When the Olympic athletes go to China in a few weeks, they are entering into this surveillance culture.  “They need to understand their movements are going to be tracked, all of their social media posts,” says Reggie. “What if an athlete posts something that is very critical of the government? What's going to happen then?” It's not just governments, it's also the major multinational corporations, who are looking the other way.  “The Chinese Communist Party is very calculating and has used China's market, the world's second largest, as an enticement,” says Guangcheng.  With billions at stake, the multinationals do not want to risk offending the CCP. These are but a fraction of the endless issues surrounding this Olympics. Why it's going ahead is not a mystery, but it is wrong. Listen in as my guests, with first hand experience of the CCP's iron hand, talk about what's at stake.
