Was Stanford Firing 23 Lecturers in Creative Writing Really Necessary? A Conversation with Lecturers and Students

Speaking Out of Place

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 3, 2024 45:43

Recently, twenty-three lecturers in the highly successful Creative Writing program at Stanford were summoned to a Zoom meeting where they were first praised, and then summarily fired. One of the most surprising aspects of this purge is the fact that it was carried out not by top-tier university administrators, but by tenure-track faculty in the program. It was they who decided to brutally terminate their colleagues. On today's show we speak with two of the lecturers who have been told they will leave Stanford in nine months, and one of their students, a published novelist. They explain the devastating nature of this act and share statistics and histories that show this was not at all necessary.  Expediency for senior faculty trumped the survival of a carefully developed and nurtured community of creative writers. Here is the link to a petition we urge our listeners to sign and share as widely as possible to support this program, and these talented and devoted teachers.Sarah Frisch is a former Wallace Stegner Fellow and current Lecturer in Stanford's Creative Writing Program. Her work has been published in The Paris Review, the VQR, and The New England Review. She's won a Pushcart Prize and an Elizabeth George Foundation Grant for fiction and has been a finalist for the National Magazine Award. She holds an MFA in Fiction from Washington University in St. Louis.Malavika Kannan is a queer fiction writer who graduated from Stanford University in 2024 with a minor in Creative Writing, where she served as the Creative Writing peer advisor. Her work appears in Washington Post, Teen Vogue, and elsewhere and her YA novel was published by Little & Brown in 2023. From the Chappell-Lougee and Major Grants to the IDA fellowship and the Honors in the Arts program, Malavika feels thankful for the many opportunities at Stanford to nurture her craft and all the people who supported her. Malavika feels very grateful to her mentor Nina Schloesser Tarano, a Jones Lecturer, for all her support. Nina Schloesser Tárano was born and grew up in Guatemala City. She received her MFA from Columbia University. Her work has appeared in Fence and The New Inquiry Magazine. She was a Wallace Stegner Fellow in Fiction 2010-2012, and has been a lecturer in the Stanford Creative Writing Program since 2012

We had the pleasure of interviewing Malavika over Zoom video!International R&B singer-songwriter, Malavika, has released her empowering single, “Overdrive”. A full-package entertainer, Malavika draws on her globe-spanning influences to craft a mélange of r&b, hip-hop and pop from a unique perspective. "Overdrive" is truly a global collaboration, created across three continents - Berlin, Dubai, and LA; including an Indian vocal sample sung by Malavika herself. She says “"Overdrive” is a song that showcases a different side of my personality. It's confident, sexual and empowering. It's about taking control, reversing gender stereotypes and expressing yourself unabashedly. But at the same time it's a sexy R&B love song that is in an ode to your person.” Malavika's intoxicating vocals are on full display, as she initiates romance with her lover over a pulsing beat, with natural confidence and sultry playfulness.Following the organic success of the only other two singles to her name, “Don't Let Go” and “Sugarcoat,” “Overdrive” was created with all the elements that Malavika is most inspired by. She expands “Vocally I wanted to go in on the song in terms of the harmonies, layers and adlibs. It's stacked and is reminiscent of early 2000s R&B, one of many eras where the ad libs really mattered. I have this moment in the second verse where I wanted to have a Queen inspired harmony moment.” With West Coast legend DJ Quik, as her mentor, “Overdrive” showcases a combination of Malavika's confident writing ability, commanding vocals, and musical influences. Alongside songwriting, Malavika has also found herself an advocate for infiltrating her culture into everything she creates. She expands; “The influences in my music are unique to my experience and upbringing, including the exposure to multilingual music. I try to incorporate sonic and visual elements of my culture whenever I can in a way that's natural and organic, because it's a part of my identity.”Born and raised in India, Malavika began to display a profound love for the performing arts from her earliest years, and began performing at just 3 years old. Being exposed to various contrasting worlds and cultures throughout her childhood has had a transformative role in Malavika's development as an artist. Imprinted with her parents' love for music, Malavika grew up idolizing Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder and Tina Turner, alongside Indian masters like A.R. Rahman - not to mention the harder-hitting hip-hop of Jay-Z, Missy Elliott, Kanye West and Drake. These influences helped push Malavika to make the move to Los Angeles to pursue her career, where she was discovered by West Coast legend DJ Quik, who is now a mentor and collaborator furthering her development as an artist. DJ Quik and Malavika have since worked on a variety of records, and toured together performing her music at the Novo in LA and venues all across the Bay Area. In 2020, Malavika's debut single “Sugarcoat” premiered via Flaunt, and was followed by her 2023 release of “Don't Let Go,” which premiered on BBC Radio. During quarantine Malavika posted a cover “All N My Grill” on social media which warranted a response from the legendary Missy Elliott herself. Her vision is to not only become a global artist, but also to create music and art that go beyond borders to integrate various cultures and their musical identities. Bringing people from all parts of the world together into the same arena is what Malavika strives for.We want to hear from you! Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, the banking world witnessed a huge surge in transactions, one such payment infrastructure was AePS in India. Many providers and government DBT schemes resorted to AePS which led to a huge demand for cash withdrawal by the vulnerable part of the society. This became a much severe issue during the migrant worker's crisis who had to uproot their lives and depend on microATMs for their travel and survival. The issue got accentuated when reports of a spike in transaction failure rates started flooding in. This had serious consequences for the masses who desperately needed to access and remit cash to stay afloat during the crisis. In this episode, we are joined by Malavika Raghavan to talk about the role of technology in enabling financial inclusion, especially among lower-income individuals. Malavika joined London School of Economics this September as a Ph.D. candidate. She is an interdisciplinary researcher working on data protection & privacy, inclusion, technology and consumer protection in finance. She founded and led the Future of Finance Initiative for Dvara Research in partnership with the Gates Foundation from 2016 until 2020, anchoring its research agenda and policy advocacy on issues at the intersection of technology, finance and inclusion. She serves on the Steering Committees of the Digital Identity Research Initiative (DIRI) at the Indian School of Business, and the Steering Committee of the Data Governance Network at the IDFC Institute. She is a member of the Asian Privacy Scholars Network. In this episode, we discuss the role of technology in enabling financial inclusion, especially among lower-income individuals. The discussion draws on Malavika's research into the gaps in the AePS and their implications (conducted in May 2020). Me again! This episode is a throwback to a few months ago, when I sat down with my friend and podcast twin, Julie Strauss, to talk about THE HEART IS A LONELY HUNTER by Carson McCullers. It may not be THE favorite, but it's one of the favorites! We talk about my weird affinity for sad stories and Southern literature, revisiting a classic after many years, making sense of changing times and dealing with racism in literature. We also just have a really good time, because Julie is an amazing host and if you don't already follow her show, the Best Book Ever podcast, you should! If you missed the episode of my show where she chats with me about HOWARD'S END by EM Forster, that's up on her show now as well. She went on to act in several productions in the city with various theatre groups before she moved to Dubai to pursue her career in radio. She continued to act and be on stage both through her job and outside of it.She was featured as one of Masala's 100 most influential people in the UAE. Her TED talk on 7 ways to make conversation with anyone is one the most-watched TEDx talks in the world - with about 20 million views. She took The Hive over in January 2019.About this episodeWe talk to Malavika about her intriguing and long career as a radio host on City 1016 and her journey and transition from that familiar bubble into her new exciting venture, The Hive. We talk a little bit about some of Malavika's many accomplishments, some of which include her TEDx talk, her win of the Khaleej Times Woman of Substance award, her love for drama, her hike in the Himalayas and so much more.Tune in for a really great episode, filled with little nuggets for your daily inspiration!Quotes"With radio, you are free to be a lot more you and I think that can everyday speak that being able to echo the words on the street, I think that really helps build your personality and helps you discover a lot about yourself which is useful in so many ways".''As I spent more and more time in the industry, I think it was also about finding ways to be better and learn more, even if it wasn't being demanded of you upfront".'I never even in my wildest dreams thought that I could be an entrepreneur, that I could have the guts to buy a business especially because radio had been doing well, I mean I have a job where I was being paid decently, got me fame and recognition, there were other opportunities that would cropping on the side. Radio's a full-time job but I thought, took a trip to the mountain and trekked and decided you know what, I'm just gonna jump into this because if I don't do it now, when am I gonna do it, how long am I going to keep doing the same radio show, it's so comfortable, it would be easy to do this my whole life but I think, I have to choose the more difficult part".'I think this ability to establish human connections is really a defining quality, its skills, that transcends cultures and age groups and I feel like as we get more and more connected digitally, we're losing the ability to do that in person".'It's important for us to encourage people to make conversation and make human connections. That's gonna be the way the world changes". "I think of Instagram as a billboard, right? It is the billboard that I want, so I'm gonna put on it what defines me like I wanna create stuff I put on it to represent what I want my brand to be, A. B, you would, if you want the brand, you would not let somebody just like drive by and spray paint or something on your billboard. If you have a negative comment, put it in on your own billboard".“People will forget what you say and people will forget what you do but they will never forget how you made them feel”.Useful LinksInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/malavikavaradan/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=508842597 Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/malavika-varadan-88773586/ Tedx: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F4Zu5ZZAG7I Website: https://www.liveathive.ae/index.php

After fashioning a baseball bat from a tree felled by lightning, pitcher Roy attempts to try out for the Chicago Cubs. But before he can get to the game, he's felled by a female fan's bullet to the chest. He disappears from the game for 15 years, only to re-emerge as a star player for the New York Knights at the decrepit age of 34. Roy, now obsessed with the team manager's nogoodnik niece Memo and her "godfather," a bookie with aims to fix the world series, Roy's desire for greatness is shut down by a great pair of legs and, I am not joking, deadly high blood pressure.

In this episode we are joined by Emma Kalliomaki, Managing Director of the Association of National Numbering Agencies (ANNA) and The Derivatives Service Bureau (DSB), and Malavika Solanki, Member of the Management Team at the DSB. ANNA is a global member association that seeks to foster standardisation within the financial industry by upholding the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) principles, and by promoting International Securities Identification Numbers (ISINs), Classification of Financial Instrument codes (CFIs), and Financial Instrument Short Names (FISN). The DSB was founded by ANNA as a fully automated global generator of ISINs, CFIs and FISNs for OTC derivatives. Messaging and data standards might at first appear dry, but together Emma and Malavika explain why the association and bureau exist and their roles in helping key regional market infrastructures. We explore the pressures their members and partners face and how they continue to support them throughout Covid-19 with business continuity and resilience development. While data integrity and alignment play an incredibly important part of this, we explore how the human need for stability must be met before organisations can look at how to move forward with new innovations and technologies such as digitisation, AI, and robotic process automation. We also discuss the role of consultation and collaboration with the other industry associations, members and stakeholders in shaping ANNA's and the DSB's roadmaps, and why the industry should be paying particular attention to new regulations such as Securities Finance in Transaction Regulation (SFTR), ESMA's consultation on non-equity transparency under MiFID II, and EMIR Refit. And on a lighter note, as we have asked all CEOs and their colleagues, Emma and Malavika share what's been keeping them going personally throughout the lockdown.

Keralites were surprised to see Jayaram and Malavika combo on screen as a model because she has never been introduced on screen though Jayaram's son Kalidasan has been shining on big screen from child artist turned actor. The ad was first released on WhatsApp and other social media platforms and then on television followed by trolls based on the same connected with the lockdown period in Kerala. The ad shows a father love and affection towards his daughter which was then turned to fun filled trolls related to the ad, politics, lockdown, marriage. How Trolls helps in marketing Following points explains how trolls helps in marketing: 1. Electronic Word of mouth (E-WOM) The information communicated through online by friends and relatives is constructed to be more credible honest and trust worthy than that generated from marketers. 2. Social exchange theory The theory mainly uses cost benefit framework and comparison of alternative to explain how human beings communicate with each other, how they form relationships and bonds. 3. Social penetration theory Social exchange theories states that human beings form close relationships through self-disclosures. 4. Social network analysis Social network treats individual actors in a community as nodes, the communication between those actors are deemed as tie, edges, links or connections. 5. McLuhan's Media theory The actual messages people are communicating won't be any different on the new media, the interactivity and frequency of new communication pattern will change our behavior forever. Clients Vision to Outshine Through this ad the Clint Malabar Gold and Diamonds only looks forward for Brand building and visibility in the vulnerable time where people have been asked to Stay home Stay safe. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/aravindts/message

„Find a dictionary full of experiences that you can use to tell your story in the future” - Malavika Varadan Every person has a story worth sharing - truly an inspiring guest on the Chapters Of My Life Podcast. I had Malavika Varadan on the Podcast mic. She is radio presenter of the morning show breakfast No.1 at City 1016 in Dubai. Her energy she brings into the room is addictive. In fact that Podcast talk is more than just sharing her life story, it’s about inspiring others to create a dictionary full of words which express adventures and experiences in life to share with others. She chooses 3 Chapters. Each decade of her life is one chapter. „Finding Words“ Chapter 1 is about her childhood in Bangladore, India. Already at age 3 on stage, she loved to emerge herself into role plays and creating stories. In fact, it was all about storytelling which continued at age 7 when she joined a theatre class. Despite facing a difficult family situation with her father's health, she started to create this mindset of turning any negativity into a positive outcome. Yes, it’s all about the mindset. Chapter 2 „Listening to Stories“ is all about finding the magic, as she once said while being on stage. Art was definitely an area she was very interested but also performing, which she eventually let her join a theatre. At age 19 invited for an audition for the radio channel in Bangladore, she got unexpectedly accepted and started as youngest radio moderator the night slots. Covering international music during the show back in Bangladore, she got an unexpected call from Dubai together with a job offer as a radio presenter. Chapter 3 “Telling Stories” start’s in her early 20’s in Dubai. Open minded as she is, she stepped into the unknown, and started in a city she barely knew anyone. Over the last 10 years, she became radio presenter at City 1016 Dubai Bollywood's Radio Show covering evening and now morning shows. She loves fitness and challenges. As she mentioned in her 100day fitness challenge which she started publicly in 2014 she needs to be accountable for her challenges to others, but also to be able to inspire others and to believe in them. In 2016 she highlighted an important topic not just for introverts but also for society in general, the lack of interest in other peoples life story. Throughout her TEDx talk “7 ways to make a conversation with anyone” she emphasizes the fact of the lack of knowing each other, the initial barrier of how to start basic conversations with people we cross our path on a daily basis. She said, the time when you forgot to check your phone is the time she wants to be in more often. Saying this, let’s start this truly inspiring talk with Malavika Varadan, a time you not gonna check your phone. Enjoy. Never give up

Our guest Malvika Iyer was just 13 when a grenade blast in her own bedroom in Bikaner almost killed her. She immediately lost both her hands, her feet were completely disfigured, she suffered from 80% blood loss, and her BP was zero. Doctors were not sure if she’d survive and once she survived, they weren’t sure if she’d ever walk again in her life. 18 months later, Malvika bagged a State rank for her 10 board exams that she only prepared for three months. A little over a decade later, she walked the ramp as a show stopper for a fashion show, and just a few months ago, she was awarded her PHD and the prestigious Nari Puraskar award on Women’s Day.
