Set in Romania during World War II, it follows a group of Nazi soldiers who unleash a malevolent supernatural force after setting up camp in an ancient stone fortress in the Carpathian Mountains. It is an adaptation of the 1981 novel of the same title by American writer F. Paul Wilson.[5] The musical score was composed by Tangerine Dream.”Also discussed: Wolf's Hole (1987), Penance by Eliza Clark, more Peter Greenaway with The Draughtsman's Contract, Philomena Cunk, Taskmaster, The Devils, Ian McKellen, Gabriel Byrne, tv versions of Ace Ventura or The Breakfast Club, Miami Vice, Sorcerer, Porky's, and more. Brush out your favorite feathered wig and practice your German deadpan as we search for the Origin of Love in John Cameron Mitchell's dragstravaganza Hedwig and the Angry Inch. How did this movie so perfectly capture how shitty it is to be a touring performer with no following? Is Andrea Martin's Phyllis Stein the ultimate ride or die b*tch. Is Miriam Shor's Yitzhak ultimately shortchanged? And if you ever meet someone who doesn't appreciate this soundtrack, how quickly should you run in the other direction? We'll give you some answers as soon as we find our coveted Wig In A Box covers album wherever its hiding in our CD collection. This week, the guys have their most focused and on-topic discussion yet when they discuss Atom Egoyan's masterpiece The Sweet Hereafter. They talk about their misconceptions before watching the film which were based on reputation and Oscar nominations, Egoyan's use of a fractured narrative and very selective plot details, Sarah Polley's real life informing her ability to reach certain emotional and maturity peaks at such a young age, the plot tying into the Pied Piper of Hamelin and much, much more. This week the ChatFlix team head into darkest Romania circa 1943 to try and control The Keep careful not to awake a horrible demon that is housed within. Michael Mann's 1983 film has more mystery and intrigue surrounding its production and release than the actual plot! Even the Tangerine Dream sound track is mired in controversy... Early performances from Scott Glenn, Ian McKellen, Gabriel Byrne, Alberta Watson and a stand out Jurgen Prochnow battle against the demon and the production.
The Keep (1983) synopsis: “Nazis are forced to turn to a Jewish historian for help in battling the ancient demon they have inadvertently freed from its prison.”Starring: Scott Glenn, Ian McKellen, Alberta Watson, Jürgen Prochnow, and Gabriel ByrneDirector: Michael MannA massively flawed film (thanks to studio interference) yet still very enjoyable (due to a fantastic Tangerine Dream score), Michael Mann’s The Keep (1983) is the very definition of “cult film!” And it’s a movie that both Zak and Corey wanted to cover since Podcasting After Dark’s inception but limited availability made that difficult until now (thanks to DiabolikDVD)! German soldiers have been stationed at the Keep, but an ancient evil has awoken killing more of them each night. The Nazis are forced to turn to a Jewish professor to help them solve the mysteries of the Keep before more soldiers fall to this unknown force. Just before Miami Vice Michael Mann wrote & directed the World War II horror film The Keep (1983) based on the novel by F. Paul Wilson. The Keep had an impressive cast with Scott Glenn, Alberta Watson, Jürgen Prochnow, Robert Prosky, Gabriel Byrne, and Ian McKellen. Despite an all-star cast and Michael Mann at the helm the film would fail due to a series of unfortunate events that would change Mann's original vision for the film. With such a strong premise Invasion of the Remake deems The Keep worthy of our patented re-imagining. Join us this week as we enter The Keep! HACK THE PLANET! Your regular hosts Neil (aka Integer Overflow) and Dan (Shoe_Gazer) are taking over the airwaves with special guest Matthew Bretten (Mr Null) to pull apart the most 90s film of all-time. We analyse the visuals, the clothing, the soundtrack and the tech, all of which help to make Hackers a hundred times better than Swordfish. To keep our critical eyes sharp, we debate whether curiosity was really their only crime, whether the hacks still hold up today, and whether the recycle bin is really a good place to store secure files. Among the oddities we encounter along the way, we talk about the merits of SWAT teams pointing guns at kids, whether Acid Burn's fencing proficiency is a useful weapon, we get pedantic about RAM, and try to avoid talking about Matthew Lillard at all. The Keep was cut so badly by Paramount that Michael Mann hasn't ever revisited the film even for a restored version. There is supposedly a 210 minute cut of the movie too. Everyone loses, especially Scott and Joey.
