Joel Morris is a multi-award winning comedy writer, and a contributor to the widely beloved Paddington films. One of the best regarded comedic talents in Britain, during the past two decades he has written for everyone from David Mitchell to Miranda Hart to Ronnie Corbett. A long-time collaborator with Charlie Brooker, he was a key part of the BAFTA-winning Wipe shows, and co-creator of the comedy character Philomena Cunk, whose dim-witted documentaries are beloved around the world. A busy author, he wrote The Framley Examiner, a spoof on local British newspapers, as well as the multi-million selling series of Ladybird Books for Grown-Ups. In 2024 he published, ‘Be Funny or Die: How Comedy Works and Why It Matters,' analysing everything from stand-up to slapstick. He has also worked as a writer for video games, collaborating on projects for Microsoft and Ubisoft. Whatever he turns his hand to, comedy remains at the core. As Richard Curtis, the writer of ‘Four Weddings and a Funeral' once put it, my guest “gets to the heart of comedy.” Be attitude for gains. https://plus.acast.com/s/my-perfect-console. This week, Josh and Drusilla discuss Michael Mann's troubled, previously hard-to-see The Keep. From wiki: “The Keep is a 1983 supernatural horror film written and directed by Michael Mann and starring Scott Glenn, Gabriel Byrne, Jürgen Prochnow, Alberta Watson, and Ian McKellen. Set in Romania during World War II, it follows a group of Nazi soldiers who unleash a malevolent supernatural force after setting up camp in an ancient stone fortress in the Carpathian Mountains. It is an adaptation of the 1981 novel of the same title by American writer F. New year, new shows, and Down to Watch is back at it again in 2025! Dan and Raul brush confetti out of their hair and put away their Santa hats to welcome a brisk January on television. Early in the month, we see a number of doc series about living forever or making a killing on the air with Jerry Springer as well as a doc spoof with returning historian Philomena Cunk. Mid-month we're catching up with the split personality cast of Severance and redefining what good cop/bad cop means, alongside a Western that isn't made by Taylor Sheridan and a Japanese drama that might get messy but sure looks cool. Rounding out the month with big dramas around the President's security, a grounded Cold War Soviet sub, and whatever Prime Target might end up being a great start to the year. Listen up and decide for yourself!
Actor and comedian Diane Morgan joins Grace for another helping of Comfort Eating. Diane is best known for playing mockumentary historian Philomena Cunk, droll antihero Liz in the critically acclaimed BBC sitcom Motherland, and Mandy in … Mandy. Diane reveals how she keeps a straight face when asking world experts very silly questions, why she was sacked from her waitressing job, and what happened when she tried to introduce hugging to the Morgan family. If you liked this episode then have a listen to Grace's conversations with Aisling Bea, Saoirse-Monica Jackson, and Jamie Demetriou
How come different people find different things funny? Why is When Harry Met Sally a better film than Love Actually? And can dogs laugh? Helping us to answer all these questions is award-winning comedy writer Joel Morris! He tells us about his new book, Be Funny or Die: How Comedy Works and Why It Matters. We find out what it's like to write jokes for Charlie Brooker and Philomena Cunk, and why Joel hasn't got a BAFTA, even though he won a BAFTA. Plus - how does Joel feel about his books ending up in charity shops, and is it OK to give up gardening if you're crap at gardening? We finish off with some top Scummy Mummy Confessions, including a triple whammy from Ellie involving an Italian wedding. Joel's brilliant book is out now, and as mentioned he has a great substack. The gaming podcast he made with Ellie is called Extra Life, the other one we talk about is Comfort Blanket, and they're both available wherever you found this. *WE ARE ON TOUR!* Very soon we're coming to Barnard Castle, Darlington, Sturminster Newton, Portsmouth, Guildford, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Glasgow, Dundee, Hertford, Canterbury, Blackburn, Tenbury Wells, Newport, Norwich, East Grinstead, Harrogate, Newcastle... My guest in this week's Book Club is Joel Morris, an award-winning comedy writer whose credits run from co-creating Philomena Cunk to writing gags for Viz and punching up the script for Paddington 2. In his new book Be Funny Or Die, he sets out to analyse how and why comedy works. He tells me why there are only three keys on the clown keyboard, what laughter does for us in neurological terms, and why Laurel and Hardy could get away with anything.

Join Tom & Jon on another rambly exploration. This time we're off back to the 1840s to take a good, hard look at the Brontë sisters. Who were Charlotte, Emily and Anne Brontë? What were they like? How is it possible that three sisters all wrote so brilliantly? Why are they still so revered by readers across the world? and what was the deal with Branwell? Pack a rain coat, a poetry book and a flask of tea and come with us o'er the moors, as we chat to experts: biographer - Lucasta Miller, English Lit Professor - Gregory Dart, and the lovely folk at the Brontë Museum in Haworth, to learn more about these fascinating and extraordinary writers. This week we educated ourselves on the writers strike, world history, and interventions. Let us attempt to get you up to speed as we discuss Netflix's "Cunk on Earth" and "John Mulaney: Baby J."
En este episodio de La Porción, programa cortito y diario de Caballeros de la Pizza Redonda, te traemos La Tierra según Philomena Cunk. Timo es el encargado de contarte qué le ha parecido esta serie.
This episode in the trilogy of three so far this Spring is the third one in the series. In this podcast James, Tim, Jon and Martin look at the brilliant fifth series episode The East Cheam Drama Festival and consider how the episode, being a play within a play, was quite revolutionary at the time. The gang consider how the second playlet is quite Pythonesque in its lack of a punchline, review how the episode would have sounded with cut lines reinstated and look at sections of the show where Hancock doesn't have any lines! The four take a deep dive into all of the characters called Dolly throughout Hancock's career and debate if this episode is the first ever appearance of a character called Cravatte!Of course the team get distracted, this time by a book on celebrities and their cars, Philomena Cunk's Soviet Onion and the brilliant Laurie Webb's visit to the Riverside Studios.Don't forget to rate and subscribe to the podcast. And, if you haven't done so already, why not join the Tony Hancock Appreciation Society - full details of how to join are at tonyhancock.org.uk In the final episode of the series we'll review the excellent radio episode Hancock's Car. Hope that you'll be able to join us then.

The BFG podcast has returned to stun and amaze you with our breadth of pop-culture knowledge. Host Neal Pollack, the editor of BFG, welcomes Stephen Garrett, as usual, to talk about 'Magic Mike's Last Dance.' Stephen thought the movie was corny and slight but found its love letter to midlife romance charming. Neal thought it was flat stupid and was annoyed that the script didn't give the backup dancers more to do. Your mileage may vary depending on whether or not you attend a "Rowdy Screening."Rachel Llewellyn stops in to chat about 'Poker Face,' the Natasha Lyonne murder-mystery vehicle from creator Rian Johnson. Lyonne wanders about the Mountain West, encountering murder and mayhem. Some people are comparing this to 'Columbo,' some are not. Regardless, Rachel is totally hooked by this story of a woman who knows when you are lying.Neal's pick of the week is 'Cunk on Earth," starring Diane Morgan as Philomena Cunk, the most blissfully clueless history-show host you'll even encounter. Most of this segment involves Neal telling his favorite jokes from the show, so let's not spoiler the spoilers. Just listen to the BFG podcast and be the best-informed pop-culture enthusiast in your pod.Enjoy the show!

The Grammys! Chinese Spy Balloons! Philomena Cunk! Oh my!Chance is sad that he missed the Grammys again, but the Boys do what they do best and judge all the hottest red carpet looks from the big event. I'm serious. Join us as we rewatch season 6 episode 19 "Bee True" and see if Cory and Shawn can finally go legitimate or if they have one last Philly Shenanigan(TMTMTM) left in them.
Black Mirror creator Charlie Brooker is back with 'Cunk on Earth', a mockumentary providing a unique look at the history of civilisation. Comedian Diane Morgan stars as Philomena Cunk, an ill-informed commentator who asks researchers and historians questions about the world while sharing her own observations. Philomena Cunk may be new to viewers here, but the character featured on Charlie Brooker's satirical current events show 'Weekly Wipe', as well as several spinoff projects. Flicks.co.nz editor Steve Newall compares Philomena Cunk to Ali G or Borat in terms of a comedy premise. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The actor, writer and comedian Diane Morgan. She started her career as a stand-up but you may know her best as the ill-informed interviewer Philomena Cunk, or laid back Liz in the parenting sitcom Motherland, or even Kath in Ricky's Gervais series After Life. She's also written, directed and starred in her own comedy series Mandy about a woman who's got big dreams but can't be bothered to do the work to get there, and whose short lived jobs are a disaster. Now she's in Inside Number 9 on BBC 2. Police in Northern Ireland are investigating a clinic in Belfast which claims to help infertile couples have a baby. The police investigation follows a BBC Northern Ireland documentary called The Babymaker Uncovered. The clinic is called Logan Wellbeing and Medical and is run by Ruth Ellen Logan who claims that she was trained in America. She's been offering treatments like massage and reflexology, as well a IV drips and vitamin injections. Women who are desperate for a child, including some who are medically menopausal, have spent thousands. We speak to reporter, Jennifer O'Leary and fertility expert Professor Alison Murdoch. In the second part of our new series on divorce, our reporter Henrietta Harrison meets Amina who talks about the impact it's had not just on her but on her parents too. And we talk to Kate Jayden who's completed 100 marathons in 100 days. She was raising money for charity and describes what kept her putting one foot in front of the other.
Listen to the full episode on our patreon: https://www.patreon.com/zizekandsoon We're back with Jack Black. More on Lacanian theory and comedy, with examples ranging from the Black Eyed Peas to Philomena Cunk. We begin with discussing celebrity and false comedy, and later engage (again) with covid and conspiracy theory. We also get the dish on Jack's favourite premier league team, interpassivity and sports, and decide, once and for all, that the Matrix surpasses Blade Runner as the paradigmatic film for Žižekian theory. More on that soon.
My guest this episode is Sarah Mills - the award-winning writer-comedian-producer - on turning the boredom of chemotherapy into the joy of ‘The Chemo Chat Show', how she approached writing her first ever pilot script which went on to win the BAFTA Rocliffe award, how to go about booking experts for Philomena Cunk, and so much more.

Award-winning comedy writer Joel Morris reveals to presenters Paul Waters & Stevyn Colgan how he writes funny - (contains swearing) - the script for the Paddington films; the adult Ladybird books (with Jason Hazeley) like The Hangover, The Husband & The Hipster; the Rule of Three podcast which analyses comedy; co-writer of Philomena Cunk and Radio 4's 'Addendum' and Viz comic and the Framley Examiner. And he’s also a musician with a wheen of albums under his belt. Gah! He does everything, the talented so-and-so. He even has branded Great Big Owl podcast company trays. Subscribe: Spotify | TuneIn | Stitcher | Apple Episode - Professor Jeff Forshaw There’s stuff everywhere. It’s there when you look out the window, it’s there when you’re doing your groceries, it’s even there when you look up into the night sky. But where did all the stuff come from, and what is it made of? What would happen if you broke something down into it’s constituent parts, and then broke those down, and then broke those down? How far could you go? No, this isn’t a Philomena Cunk episode, this is particle physics with Jeff Forshaw, Professor of Particle Physics at the University of Manchester. His research sees him crunching the data from some of the world’s most fascinating particle physics experiments, and looking for hidden gems of information about the tiny building blocks of our universe. We found ourselves in the Salutation Pub in Manchester yet again for a lovely chat and a pint (or three) with Jeff, trying to answer the question of whether matter really matters, or if we were quarking up the wrong tree… We talked about whether the Large Hadron Collider could create a black hole (spoiler alert: no), becoming a professor at the tender age of 36, and what it’s like to write books with Brian Cox. Welcome back to the Pint of Science podcast. Each week, we meet scientists in pubs around the UK to find out about their lives, their universe, and everything. From *how* fruit flies love to *why* humans love, via jumping into volcanoes, winning Olympic medals, where we came from and more! Like what we do? Let us know using the hashtag #pintcast19. And be sure to subscribe to us and rate us on your favourite podcasting platform! The Pint of Science podcast is a part of the Pint of Science Festival, the world's largest science communication festival. Thousands of guests and speakers descend on pubs in hundreds of cities worldwide to introduce science in a fun, engaging, and usually pint-fuelled way. This podcast is made possible with the help of our sponsors Brilliant.org. Do check them out, and visit www.brilliant.org/pintofscience/ where the first 200 people who sign up will get 20% off a Premium plan! About Jeff Forshaw, this week’s guest: After his teenage years in the Northwest building his own golf rankings, Jeff Forshaw took his considerable talents to Oriel College, Oxford, where he earned a first class degree in physics, followed by a PhD in Theoretical Physics from the University of Manchester. His PhD thesis was on ‘the parton content of the photon and photon-induced minijets’, and no that’s not about Dolly Parton or tiny planes, we checked. Following his PhD, Jeff found himself back in Oxfordshire as a postdoctoral researcher under renowned particle physicist Frank Close. A move back to Manchester saw him becoming professor of particle physics at the young age of 36, where he now looks at data from some of the world’s most important particle physics experiments, including the Large Hadron Collider at CERN in Geneva. Jeff met fellow Manchester prof Brian Cox when he lectured Brian on Advanced Quantum Field Theory (despite being around the same age), and they have since written a series of critically-acclaimed popular science books together, including Why does E=MC2?, The Quantum Universe, and Universal: a guide to the cosmos. He’s also consulted for a host of TV programmes. His public engagement work earned him the Kelvin Medal and Prize for outstanding contribution to public understanding of physics in 2013. For a glimpse of Jeff in action, here’s a clip of him on Newsround explaining why the Higg’s Boson is like cosmic treacle (let’s face it, a children’s news show is about our level for particle physics). First off a warning to anyone who has one of those Coca Cola embossed glasses in their cabinets.....I decided to have a Bacardi and Coke so I took the glass out and dropped a few cubes of ice in it...as the ice touched the glass it exploded....not cracked...literally exploded with bits flying all over the room.....the glass is the type which holds a pint and is quite thick with "Coca Cola" embossed on the outside....if anyone has one or a similar one...throw it in the bin. 2.I watched a very interesting programme on American "fibs".....which looked into the wonderful heroic events in their history and revealed what ACTUALLY happened.....examples of the many items was Paul Revere who supposedly rode across the country on his own and warned everyone of the approaching British.....there is even a huge statue of him ....however ...there was three of them and poor old Paul didn't make it to the end (fell off his horse I think)....and legend also has it that when the British tried to conquer them they were beaten by untrained farmers who bravely took up weapons and won the battle...when it was actually a trained army of Americans and French ....and there was an item with President George W. Bush prattling on about the day they gained independence and rang the independence bell loud and clear......the bell never arrived until 40 years later....and the Statue of Liberty was originally designed for the middle east who couldn't afford it so it was redesigned and sold to America.......it was a very interesting programme which makes you realise why a lot of Americans live in a movie world protected by John Wayne. 3.The BBC have been advertising the arrival of a new series featuring Alan Partridge...played by Steve Coogan....after all the hype I decided to watch it.....I must be missing something....there were a few rave reviews.....I don't think I even smiled...it was awful and that is half an hour of my life I won't get back......similarly this programme followed another half hour "comedy" called Warren....starring Martin Clunes......what I fail to understand is why these popular stars get involved in such rubbish....are they that hard up?....HOWEVER there is one saviour...it is called "Cunk on Britain" and features Diane Morgan as Philomena Cunk discussing the history of the country with top scientists and historians......the fact she knows nothing at all makes it very funny and original so the BBC must have SOME staff with a bit of knowledge about comedy. 4.I also watched a documentary on Walt Disney.....what an incredibly talented man.....the programme went through his life from his humble beginnings to building his amazing empire....what it brought home was the detail and thought behind the cartoons....for example he would have his cartoonists sitting in a room wathing a girl dancing and studying the movements of her dress and body....also he would bring animals in to study their movements.....he would even film a stone being thrown through a window then slowing it down to study what actually happens to the glass.....all this knowledge was put into the cartoons....most of which is missed by the average viewer....brilliant stuff.....it makes you realise what a genius he was.......not to mention the musicians who put the music together.....a great programme. 5.I thought I would link the song this week with the American mentality....it is called The Ballad of John Wayne....who is regarded as a hero over there....he won wars as a marine and won the west as a tough cowboy....when in fact he never saw any active service....he did HIS bit on the silver screen......which for some seems to be good enough....so "Get on ya horse and ride" with the Ballad of John Wayne.

Ever feel like you missed something important when it comes to the news? A fact, a detail, or an event that it feels like everyone else knows about, and now you'd look like a moron if you asked someone to explain? Well, here's a podcast that will ask those questions so you don't have to.This week Danielle Ward is joined by Nicole Badstuber, who researches and writes about transport policy, to explain how trains work in the UK or, more to the point, why they don't. Danielle is joined by comedy writers Sarah Morgan (Wilsons Save The World, Not Going Out, The Fear) and Joel Morris (The Ladybird Books for Grown-Ups, Rule of Three, Philomena Cunk).Questions asked and answered include:Why are the trains so buggered? What's stopping someone from starting a new rail service? Why are trains given more attention than buses? Can you flush the toilet while the train is in the station?....so if you've sort of been guessing the answers based on a gut feeling, why not listen and find out for sure? And then subscribe to stay equally informed about other issues, as we get around to them. All our guests are on Twitter, so go and say hello - @sarahlmorgan, @gralefrit and @nicolebadstuber, and Danielle is @captainward. The show itself now has a Twitter account: @AnyStupidQs. Follow it for information about upcoming episodes, recordings, and extra bits of the show that had to be cut for any reason.Produced by Ed Morrish (@edmorrish)Music from www.akmmusic.co.uk See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Literary Loitering | Cultural Anarchy with Books and The Arts
Don your leather jackets, wheel out your tricycles, and join Graham, Sarah and Rob for another anarchic slow-ride through arts, books and culture. Kicking things off this week, yet another former member of Donald Trump’s staff has released a tell-all book - which is more proof that if you want a book deal in the U.S., you should get a job in the White House. In other news, we find out the truth about J. D. Salinger’s unpublished works, E. L. James announces a “sexy” new book, and we marvel at the rise of a new sub-genre of detective fiction called cozy mysteries - which may sometimes feature cats as the heroes. After that it’s Sarah’s turn to talk about her Christmas book, which is Cunk On Everything: The Encyclepedia Philomena by Philomena Cunk and Jason Hazeley. Then it’s time for a quiz about old dialect words and phrases from around the UK … what could go wrong? This week the co-creators of BBC2’s investigative dimwit Philomena Cunk – top comedy writers JASON HAZELEY and JOEL MORRIS – descend into the Remainiacs bunker to get all that Brexit misery off their chests. What should go inside the Museum of Brexit? How will Britain manage to negotiate a wide-ranging trade deal with the 1950s? What’s at the core of Cunkism? And what was in the original final scenes of ‘Cunk On Britain’ – the ones they daren’t film?Plus this week’s new Centrist party, what Hungarian fascists can teach us about our own far right, and why the ‘Commonwealth Family’ has rather different perspectives on Britain than the Brexiters think.“The Tory Party managed to save it self simply by destroying the whole country. It’s easy really.”This week’s REMAINIACS is presented by Peter Collins with Ian Dunt and Naomi Smith. Audio production: Jack Claramunt. Producer: Andrew Harrison. This week on the discerning pop culture podcast, FACE magazine veterans Richard Benson and Craig McLean join Andrew and Siân to discuss Philomena Cunk’s all-encompassing Reithian history of Britain. Turns out they would have put the Cunk on the cover of The Face… but doing what? Plus: We spank ourselves senseless with a tambourine for the 25th birthday edition of Suede’s debut, explore the lore of the Great British Record Shop, and find out how Craig broke his arm messing about with Björk. It’s what your Bank Holiday was made for. Audio production by Sophie Black. Bigmouth is a Podmasters Production. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
It’s side special time again, and do you fancy something unpretentious and easy-going? Well, bad news - it's ZARDOZ! AND IN THE END ZARDOZ RE-CREATED MAN! Joining John to refuse to move to the second level no matter how much you waggle your hands are the acclaimed comedy writers of Charlie Brooker's News Wipe, Philomena Cunk and the Ladybird Books For Grown-Ups - Jason Hazeley (on Twitter as @JasonHazeley) and Joel Morris (@gralefrit)! It's time to bid bye-bye to Brosnan with the undignified 20th outing of a man it's hard to even see as a spy any more. In fact it's hard to see him at all, because he's in an invisible car. Defending the indefensible is BAFTA-winning comedy writer, Ladybird-bookwright and putter of stupid words in the mouth of Philomena Cunk, Joel Morris, who's on twitter as @gralefrit. Dave and James talk to the co-writer of those Ladybird books, writer for Charlie Brooker, Philomena Cunk and Russ Abbot - Jason Hazeley. Oh, and he's the occasional keyboard player for Portishead. Course he is. He explains how he got started and has a theory that comedy is just music.
This week we discuss Idriss Elba’s visit to Parliament, the return of both Prison Break and 24 to TV screens, Philomena Cunk’s documentary about Shakespeare and more. We also run through the winners of the National Television Awards. This week we’ve been watching Citizen Khan, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Death In Paradise and Top Coppers. #Citizen_Khan #Star_Wars #The_Clone_Wars #Death_In_Paradise #Top_Coppers #OnTheBox #Television #TheGeekShow #News #Reviews #TV #Comedy #Podcasts
Where did May go? We have a long overdue catch-up on the past few weeks, through Japan, Hen Do's, Shakespeare, Philomena Cunk, Kenneth Branagh, Comic Con, Russell Tovey, Alan Bennett, Eurovision and Beyoncé. We've not been busy and important, just busy and mediocre...
