Closing out a decade comprising two iconic hits (Heat, The Last of the Mohicans), Oscar-nominated director Michael Mann decided to next collaborate with Oscar-winning writer Eric Roth (Forest Gump) on this docudrama about a controversial story which ran at the highly-rated news-program "60 Minutes" just a few years prior. This news segment focused on an interview with "Big Tobacco" whistleblower Jeffrey Wigand (Russel Crowe) and what damaging secrets he was able to review about the questionable business practices of his former employer, Brown & Williamson. Unfortunately this segment didn't air right away resulting from various complicating factors including political concerns at the network (CBS) airing it, ongoing litigation from Brown & Williamson, and Wigand's own personal history coming to light. The producer on this segment and the other key "insider" in this story was 60 Minutes' Lowell Bergman played by Oscar-winner Al Pacino. And what results is a stirring film which was beloved by critics though not by audiences....it would also receive seven Oscar nominations including for Best Picture. It remains one of the best films from a sterling year (1999) for cinema and also featured a stacked cast including Diane Venora, Christopher Plummer, Phillip Baker Hall, Michael Gambon, Debi Mazar, Gina Gershon, and Bruce McGill.Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/
It's Die Hard in a hitman movie! This week it's the DIE HARD ON A BLANK 50 th episode bonanza, and Phil and Liam aretracking down THE JACKAL, the 1997 action-thriller starring Bruce Willis, Richard Gere, SidneyPoitier, Diane Venora and J.K. Simmons! After an FBI raid results in the death of a vicious Russian gangster, the mobster's aggrievedbrother hires an elusive international assassin known as ‘the Jackal' (Bruce Willis) for aretaliatory killing against a high-profile American target. But because so few people have everseen this wily hitman in the flesh, FBI Deputy Director Carter Preston (Sidney Poitier) decides tobring one of the Jackal's former cohorts - imprisoned IRA sniper Declan Mulqueen (RichardGere) - onto the task force assigned to stop him. Can Carter, Declan and the team track downand take out the Jackal before he completes his deadly mission? With its high-stakes terrorism plot and escalating action, THE JACKAL shares strong DNA withthe DIE HARD series, providing ample material for comparison. Phil also uncovers somefascinating information about alternative casting choices for both films, that spark somecaptivating thought experiments. Did you know that Richard Gere was formally offered the roleof John McClane, and that producer Joel Silver aggressively pursued him for the part?Phil loves this film, whereas Liam is not so hot on it, so they each present the case for thedefense and the prosecution. They discuss the performances of the lead actors, particularlyBruce Willis' portrayal of the cold-blooded assassin, and Richard Gere's complex, reluctanthero, as well as the excellent supporting turns from Sidney Poitier and Diane Venora (Venora-Cast anyone???). The episode also explores the film's reception, examining its critical reviewsand box office performance, (and controversies), and the guys discuss how it fits within thebroader action-thriller genre of the late 1990s. The late appearance of the Marine heavyhelicopter in the film's finale ticks the ‘Philly Special' box and sends Phil into delirious rapture! As always events culminate with the DIE HARD Oscars and the Double Jeopardy trivia quiz, butstay tuned for a very exciting announcement at the end of the show!THE JACKAL trailer:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nszMBbCZKo4At the time of release, THE JACKAL is available to watch on Tubi and Starz, and is available torent or buy on Prime Video, YouTube, Apple/iTunes, Fandango, and all the usual platforms! País Estados Unidos Dirección Michael Caton-Jones Guion Chuck Pfarrer, Kenneth Ross. Historia: Chuck Pfarrer Reparto Bruce Willis, Richard Gere, Sidney Poitier, Diane Venora, Mathilda May, J.K.
Justice Warrior Ben Clarkson returns to discuss the 1997 action thriller The Jackal, starring Bruce Willis, Richard Gere, and Sidney Poitier in his final film role. Ostensibly a remake of the the 1973 Fred Zinneman film The Day of the Jackal (itself an adaptation of Frederick Forsyth's 1971 debut novel of the same name), the film attempts to update the story of lethal methodology and intrigue to a contemporaneous post-Cold War, "End of History" milieu that sees a collaboration between US intelligence, Russian police, and a former IRA sniper to stop Bruce Willis's titular shapeshifting hitman from assassinating (spoilers) an analogue of Hillary Clinton. While there are some fun bells and whistles, and a heaping of Bruce Willis disguises, the movie ultimately represents diminishing returns on the promise of this type of movie, forsaking procedural thrills for something far more rote and predictable. We begin with an extended discussion of form and film language, why it's meaningful in the context of our current media landscape, and what an illiteracy toward formalism suggests about the way culture engages with everything we see via a screen. Then, we discuss the distinctions between Fred Zinneman's 1973 thriller and its 90s update: what it does well, and where it goes very, very wrong. Finally, we expound on the film's sociopolitcal moment, and what its moralizing of its most compelling character says about the broader cultural trends of nationalism in the mid-90s.Justice Warriors Vol. 2: Vote Harder is out now. Join the crew from The Popcorn Time Machine Podcast as they rewind, rewatch, and review the 1995 Action/Crime film Heat. Neil McCauley (Robert De Niro) and his professional heist crew set out to score big money targets and are, in turn, hunted by Lt. Action packed and an amazing cast including Val Kilmer, Jon Voight, Tom Sizemore, Diane Venora, Amy Brenneman, and Ashley Judd. Let's rewind this one together.
It's Die Hard in an epic crime saga! For this suitably epic episode, Phil and Liam are joined by special guest Katie Walsh - top Los Angeles film critic and co-host of the Michael Mann-themed podcast Miami Nice - to discuss the sprawling 1995 masterpiece Heat! When a team of elite professional thieves led by Neil McCauley (Robert De Niro) pull off an audacious armored car robbery that leaves three guards dead, hard-charging Robbery-Homicide detective Vincent Hanna (Al Pacino) is assigned to the case. In the process of investigating and surveilling the culprits, Hanna comes to admire McCauley's tremendous skill and discipline, and even starts to identify with him personally, while still pursuing him and his crew relentlessly across LA. Phil, Liam and Katie discuss their respective relationships with the movie over time, and debate whether it deserves to be considered one of the greatest films ever made. They explore its surprisingly high amount of ‘Die Hard DNA', before delving deep into Heat's storied production history, a section that also includes a detailed sidebar on Mann's 1989 TV movie LA Takedown, which became the blueprint for the final film. As always, they analyze the ‘hero' and ‘villain' of the piece, unpacking what makes these two iconic central characters so compelling, unique and enduring, and they also discuss the ladies of Heat (such as Ashley Judd, Diane Venora, Amy Brenneman, Natalie Portman and Kim Staunton) and their respective roles in the tapestry of this complex and multi-faceted story. They parse through the various spectacular action set-pieces in the film, debate whether Heat would meet the definition to be considered an action movie, and talk about what Henry Rollins looks like in shorts (Google it). After a trip to the ‘Die Hard Oscars' to hand out some action movie awards, events culminate with a suitably intense showdown between Liam and Katie during the Double Jeopardy trivia quiz!HEAT trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PpAhjOvQVj0At the time of release, HEAT is streaming on Hulu in the US and on Netflix in the UK and is available to rent or buy on Amazon Prime Video, Apple/iTunes, YouTube, Vudu and all the usual platforms! Public/Private is Gail's memoir about her life with famous producer/director Joe Papp as they founded the Public Theater in NYC. Over their 26-year relationship, Gail and Joe established a legendary partnership that built the famous theatrical institution. In her memoir, Gail gives you an inside look at the early years of the Public when plays such as A Chorus Line were just starting and then little-known actors were making their way in show business. Gail and Joe's production genius was responsible for an extraordinary body of work that launched the careers of dozens of actors, including James Earl Jones, Colleen Dewhurst, Gloria Foster, Morgan Freeman, Raúl Juliá, Kevin Kline, Mandy Patinkin, George C. Scott, Martin Sheen, Meryl Streep, and Diane Venora, all of whom make an appearance in the book.Opening in the early Sixties, Gail's narrative spans the years she and Joe worked, then lived together until Joe's death in 1991. During most of that time, Gail was the Developer of New Plays and Musicals at The Public while it staged hundreds of productions, ranging from the free Shakespeare in Central Park series to new plays, such as Ntozake Shange's for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf, and musicals like Hair and A Chorus Line. Gail Papp paints a comprehensive picture of the ways that The Public was driven by Joe's ambition to create a democratic theater whose artists and audiences would reflect the city's population. Also highlighted are unfamiliar aspects of his many battles with the establishment, from tilts with Robert Moses to theater critics the scourge of AIDS, its impact on the many friends, family and colleagues close to Joe and Gail, and the toll it exacted on Joe's son, Tony.At a time when America remains divided over issues of equality, identity, and freedom of expression, Public/Private is an important chronicle of how The Public Theater became a transformative beacon for social change and of the couple who created it.

The film is at once the story of the the tremendous power of corporate entities to take down those who seek to share the truth with the American public and an expressionist masterpiece that showcases some of Mann's most disciplined and mature directorial work. We discuss the film's seismic lead performances from dual leads Al Pacino and a career-best Russell Crowe. Then, we praise the Michael Mann & Eric Roth script, and its critical portrayal of its subjects, avoiding lionization. Finally, we discuss the story's terrible prescience, and how the film's shock at corporate media interests overruling the efforts of journalists can sometimes feel quaint by today's standards. Elaine and Mark from The Honeymoon Period podcast return to Flixwatcher to review Elaine's choice Heat. Heat (1995) is a heist drama written and directed by Michael Mann. Its ensemble cast features Al Pacino as Lieutenant Vincent Hanna, LAPD, Robert De Niro as Neil McCauley, Val Kilmer as Chris Shiherlis, Jon Voight as Nate, Tom Sizemore as Michael Cheritto, Diane Venora as Justine Hanna, Amy Brenneman as Eady, Ashley Judd as Charlene Shiherlis, Mykelti Williamson as Sergeant Bobby Drucker, Wes Studi as Lieutenant Sammy Casals, Ted Levine as Detective Mike Bosko, William Fichtner as Roger Van Zant, Natalie Portman as Lauren Gustafson, Tom Noonan as Kelso AND Hank Azaria as Alan Marciano. Neil McCauley leads a gang of elite criminals, but when a robbery of bearer bonds goes sour when one of the crew kills a guard he ends up in the path of Lieutenant Vincent Hanna, a hardened and obsessive detective. McCauley discovers Hanna on his tail but doesn't spook and agrees to one last heist. Heat is widely considered a masterpiece, the now iconic coffee scene marked the first time Pacino and De Niro shared the screen together and it is one of Christopher Nolan's favourite films. Recommendability scores reflected some of the criticisms (particularly around the role of women) but were still high. Lower scores for small screen reflected that it is one of those films best watched the big screen and gives an overall rating of 3.75. For us, the action is the juice with a double feature for the ages, the very sort of pairing that fights for freedom and lives for love (IYKYK): Heat & Max Keeble's Big Move! But before we explore these insane moves- large and small- this edition's Blue Plate Special digs into recent ticket price hikes at AMC Theatres, M. Night Shyamalan's latest thriller Knock at the Cabin, the 2000 hyperlink landmark Amores Perros, and an Amazon order mix-up (not once but twice!!) that's destined to forever live in infamy. But the men of the hour (Pacino, De Niro, and Linz) inevitably make their presence felt in an action-packed discussion that covers the innumerable ways in which Heat is a classic, Max Keeble's Big Move is not, Jon Voight's hair, Larry Miller's lack thereof, and how both films, in their own way, serve as generational touchstones to criminals and dreamers in equal measure. In 1996 we got a modernized look at one of the all-time classics with Baz Luhrmann's William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet. Luhrmann takes us through the old familiar story word for word with a unique and modernized visual interpretation as the setting, so you have something to look at while you pretend to understand what they're saying. This flick is loaded with talent featuring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Claire Danes, Brian Dennehy, John Leguizamo, Harold Perrineau, Pete Postlethwaite, Paul Sorvino and Diane Venora, and was reviewed fairly well considering the large swing taken by Luhrmann. But, does it hold up? Listen in as Jon, Colin, and Brent debate how soon is too soon to introduce the poison and the risks of leaving children with priests as we try to figure out if this is true romance, or if we should just all kill ourselves.

Happy Birthday to us! To celebrate, get strapped and iamb your pentameter as we revel in Baz Luhrmann's deliciously over-the-top Romeo + Juliet (1996), one of the first episodes we ever recorded—and producer Randall's personal white whale. Did this soundtrack ever leave your Discman? Are we the biggest Shakespeare dorks who ever lived? Is Harold Perrineau's Mercutio pure sex in platform heels? (No question he carries this film.) Or is John Leguizamo's Tybalt the true snack? Don't get us wrong, Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes are adorable portraying young love, but we could do with less screaming. Now please excuse us as we listen to The Cardigans on loop. Read Randall's full episode notes at yourenofun.com.And follow us on Instagram , Facebook and Twitter.
Michael Mann's 'Heat' is many things; intensely beloved Los Angeles crime saga, De Niro-and-Pacino-onscreen-together curiosity, technically brilliant filmmaking accomplishment, both genre-defining and genre-busting, a tour-de-force of casting, atour-de-force of acting, a tour-de-force of directing, writing, editing, production design, and score....it has enduring presence and continued influence. It's one of my top 3 favorite films and as such I've resisted doing it on the podcast because it contains the multitudes above. But a recent rewatch allowed me to appreciate some aspects of the film anew, and inspired this episode. I was particularly struck by the women of 'Heat', which is perhaps a surprise to those who subscribe to the "Michael Mann makes guy films women aren't interested in" take. But the work of Diane Venora, Amy Brenneman, Ashley Judd, and Kim Staunton is worthy of the praise it gets in this episode. The work each actor put into making their characters fully-formed people with their own often conflicted and conflicting reasons for partnering with a criminal or a driven robbery-homicide detective rises these performances from background to foreground. Their scenes are as alive and filled with energy and emotion as the meticulously filmed and edited heist scenes. And also, the supporting casting is singled out in this episode; from Jon Voight, to Tom Noonan, Bud Cort, Mykleti Williamson, Dennis Haysbert, Tone Loc, Ted Levine, Hank Azaria, William Fichtner, Ricky Harris, Natalie Portman and beyond, Bonnie Timmerman and Michael Mann outdid themselves in searching for, in waiting for, just the right actors capable of going all the way in with characterizations deeper than usual for supporting players in films. 'Heat' is a film that is so praised, so accepted as a masterpiece of its kind that it actually takes some work to watch it free of all that positive baggage and appreciate it all over again as an actor's movie, as one person quoted in the podcast says...it's a film of deep emotional power and human connection. In this episode, I surprised myself by plugging into these aspects of 'Heat' and hopefully you will enjoy having your filmic receptors tantalized enough to inspire your own re-watch. Please let me know what you think when you do!
Put your hands up (!) and celebrate the return of our very first guest: Ethan Williams! This week we discuss Michael Mann's masterful crime drama, Heat. Featuring an all-star cast of Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Tom Sizemore, Jon Voight, Val Kilmer, Ashley Judd, and Natalie Portman, this film follows the conflict between a master thief (played by De Niro) and an LAPD detective (played by Pacino). Both the best-of-the-best in their respective professions, the two come to have mutual respect for one another, although this does not stop them from doing whatever is necessary to come out on top. Episode Summary: Cops and robbers are a sacrament of film. Once crime was introduced to cinema, filmmakers and writers uncovered its narrative power. Like any popular subject matter, it tends to get bland as films present watered-down versions and half-assed attempts at telling a compelling crime story. Fast forward to 1995's Heat. Heat is art meets action in the form of cops and robbers. Instead of your standard crime drama, Michael Mann serves up a delicious character study that focuses on the subtle variance in moral fibers that put good and bad on opposite sides. The movie breaks wide open when you realize that Vincent and McCauley are the same people. They just happen to fall on different sides of the law. The Departed seems like a Scorsese rerun on the outside. However, it doesn't take long to see that it's not his age-old formula of “3 hours of zooming in on the thing that makes a character unbearable.” Instead, he puts together a giant cast and shows his ability to tell a story across multiple points of view. In this episode, the guys discuss how simply having a giant, star-laden cast doesn't guarantee a good film. It takes a director and a vision. These two films are the ultimate example of how to balance star power and story. As for randos, the guys discuss the preparation that actors went through, Michael Mann's attention to character detail, and the artistic design of these powerhouse films. Hey Bomb Crew, welcome back and welcome to season 2 of the Not a Bomb podcast. On this week's show, Brad and Troy “Friday Night” Sauer, tackle the forgotten 1999 adventure film - The 13th Warrior. Billed as the film by the writer of Jurassic Park and the director of Die Hard (some might even say The Predator), The 13th Warrior is known as one of the biggest box office bombs of all time and was universally panned by the critics. The 13th Warrior is a pseudo retelling of the epic poem Beowulf and has Spanish actor Antonio Banderas portraying an Arab Muslim traveler who finds himself thrust into an adventure with Norse Vikings. This is one of the most thinly plotted movies discussed on the podcast and really only acts as an excuse to get into the next action set-piece.Listen as Troy (who clearly had one too many cocktails at dinner) and Brad talk about some of their favorite adventure films, one of the worst trailers of all time, and the concept of the conduit character. The 13th Warrior is directed by John McTiernan and stars Antonio Banderas, Diane Venora, and Omar Sharif. If you want to leave feedback or suggest a movie bomb, please drop us a line at NotABombPod@gmail.com. In this episode, Aric and Marisa take a look at six films that stand out as unique adaptations of an original source, with inspiration drawing from music, poems, short stories, and more. They also look at how each filmmaker creatively translated that source into a one-of-a-kind film.On the list is INTERSTELLA 5555: THE 5TORY OF THE 5ECRET 5TAR 5YSTEM (2003), the Daft Punk and Leiji Matsumoto collaboration that dazzles with hand drawn tie-dye color explosions and iconic house music, Michael Mann's THE INSIDER (1999), a paranoid-thriller adapted from the 1996 Vanity Fair article, "The Man Who Knew Too Much," that exposed the tobacco industry, Paul Schrader's MISHIMA: A LIFE IN FOUR CHAPTERS (1985), a narratively complex biopic representing the life of controversial Japanese writer Yukio Mishima, as well as Todd Field's indie crime masterpiece, IN THE BEDROOM (2001), Joyce Chopra's tale of female adolescence, SMOOTH TALK (1983), and BRIGHT STAR (2009), Jane Campion's tender period romance adapted from the poems of 19th-century poet, John Keats.

Doug Liman 0:55:15 - CHERRY, Dir. Anthony Russo, Joe Russo (Marvel) Chaos Walking Doug Liman, we expect better from you. We aren't mad, just disappointed. Chaos Walking is adapted from a novel by author Patrick Ness and has all the ingredients for a real gem- great, young cast, solid director well versed in action and narrative line, and bigger budget. Still, a subpar film with promise early on and undelivered fulfillment on those promises. Though- one thing does have to be said for Chaos Walking- It's releases in theaters when few others are, a fact that is very relevant in the middle of a pandemic. Megastar Tom Holland and should be megastar but isn't Daisey Ridley take the leads in the dystopian Sci-Fi adventure where people can hear each other's thoughts in different forms of sound called "Noise" and there are no women. Should be interesting, but it isn't. (3/10) Cherry (Apple) The latest Apple Original film is Cherry- A film about the journey of a young man from early adulthood (college) to the Army as a medic post 9/11, to back home where he has a wife and house waiting for him, to the pits of his own despair in the form of drug addiction ruining the life of those around him to robbing banks and then to an eventual incarceration and a pretty great mustache in the last few moments of the story. It's a ride for sure. Hopefully, you took it. It's worth it. Tom Holland is Cherry- a young man who goes through the above journey. It's broken out into several different parts and an epilogue that is very pleasing to watch and an impressive montage to boot. It's not an easy watch not is it fun, but very satisfying.
This week on Total Movie Recall, Ryan stares out the window of his furniture-less modernist home at the endless, uncaring ocean while Steve sleeps on the floor with his hand gripped around his pistol. The pseudo-philosophy of this movie seems deeper than it is because it's endlessly reflected in all the glass buildings of Michael Mann's uber-masculine vision. Sure, it may be pretentious, but that's the point, and if you've got a problem with that, I will take you down, because we ain't exactly doin' thrill-seeker podcasts with “Born to Lose” tattoos on our chests. The film was produced by McTiernan, Crichton, and Ned Dowd, with Andrew G. Vajna, James Biggam and Ethan Dubrow as executive producers. We hot things up around here with Mike C. as we review another Michael Mann film, "Heat". Appropriate for our first movie of the summer. Life is short. Whatever time you get is luck. Master criminal Neil McCauley (Robert De Niro) is trying to control the rogue actions of one of his men, while also planning one last big heist before retiring. Meanwhile, Lieutenant Hanna (Al Pacino) attempts to track down McCauley as he deals with the chaos in his own life, including the infidelity of his wife (Diane Venora) and the mental health of his stepdaughter (Natalie Portman). McCauley and Hanna discover a mutual respect, even as they try to thwart each other's plans. Join us next week as we celebrate what remaining independence we still have as we review "The Patriot" starring Mel Gibson with Snobby Bobby of the Not for Everyone Podcast (another movie review show!). We use movies as a starting point for people who may not be familiar with this way of thinking. Discussion of the plot and decisions that characters make in relation to morality and violations of the non-aggression principle are our bread and butter. THE SUBSTITUTE (1996) is the ultimate 90s White-Teacher-in-an-Urban-Classroom film. This subgenre had its hits (Dangerous Minds), but The Substitute perfectly captures the attitude. Basically, hit the books or Tom Berenger will shoot you in the face. Co-starring Ernie Hudson, Marc Anthony, Diane Venora, and everybody's favorite bad actor: William Forsythe. Take your seats, kiddos, school's in session.
Michael Mann's 1995 'Heat' has become the definitive LA crime film, but probably no one has done more lately to celebrate the epic tale of cops and robbers than a movie critic in Sydney, Australia.Since the summer of 2017, Blake Howard (@BlakeisBatman) has been subjecting the film — starring Al Pacino and Robert De Niro — to a minute-by-minute analysis on his podcast, One Heat Minute. He and his guests have unpacked the nearly three-hour cat-and-mouse caper with admiration and reverence, and an affirmation of their love for cinematic culture. Howard initially hosted guests who were friends and local movie buffs. But as the podcast garnered more attention, he added an array of international guests, including people who were involved in the making of the film. For the final episode — minute 166 — Howard welcomes the director of 'Heat,' Mann himself. Mann and 'Heat' fan Mark Olsen (@IndieFocus) talks with Howard about why he took on the project, his passion for the movie, and how his roster of guests came together. It's a couple of cinephiles talking.
