IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE mitverfolgt.
The Wiz RECOMMENDS Farewell My Concubine From a pure visual perspective, few historical epics match the visual sumptuousness of Farewell My Concubine, Chen Kaige's Palme d'Or winning film. It's astonishing on two fronts: the lived in, authentic feel of China during the periods of time the film is portraying and the gorgeous, colorful visuals of the characters performing their plays. Everything set outside of the Peking opera gives the film an incredibly distinct feel that surrounds the characters in a rich history that gives the film a distinct weight when watching. As for the plays, the colorful make-up and costumes, along with the sets and playhouses they are performed at, give a grand feel to these scenes. But the film is also buoyed by Leslie Cheung's excellent performance as Daiyi, a man who has fallen in love with his acting partner who will never reciprocate his love. Cheung plays Daiyi beautifully and tragic, wearing the years of abuse and hard training on his face. He adds a depth of character that doesn't need to be said as he inhabits the role so deeply that he embodies Daiyi in all his complex forms. But honestly, the love triangle between Daiyi, his acting partner Xiaolou (played by Fengyi Chang) and his partner's wife Juxian, played by Gong Li is the weakest part of the film. Neither Juxian or Xiaolou are as captivating as Daiyi and as a result the film starts to drag when the movie concentrates solely on their drama and squabbles. In fact, all the drama is utterly reliant on Cheung to carry it through his force of will performance. Though Wiz did enjoy the film overall, he also felt that having some background info on the history of China at this time might have helped gleamed more from the film and it's themes. The film without that information is still good, but he will likely seek out more information about that time period when he makes a second viewing attempt.
What's it like to not only have an Olympic gold medalist mom but also have the chance to play her in a movie in China alongside the likes of Gong Li?! In this episode, we speak with Lydia Bai, a former Stanford volleyball star turned investment banker, now life coach, who had the rare opportunity to completely shake up her life and fly to China for this rare opportunity. *Her mom is legendary volleyball icon Lang Ping and the movie we're talking about is called "Leap" (2020)!* Through the process of learning how to act (in Mandarin, nonetheless!), Lydia was able to push through her own negative self talk and finally realize that the only person holding her back in life was herself. With this newfound realization, Lydia was inspired to forge a new path for herself as a life coach focused on helping women in tech overcome their own limiting beliefs in order to thrive in their careers. If you'd like to connect with Lydia, you can find her at https://www.lydiabai.com and on LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/in/lydiabai/ Listeners - what did you resonate with most in this episode? Welcome back to a brand new episode of your favorite movie bomb podcast! The guys are still celbrating cinematice bromances. This week, they travel to TV Land and discuss the film adaptation of the beloved television series Miami Vice. Directed by podcast favorite, Michael Mann, Miami Vice bucked the trend of turning TV series into big box comedies and went the more serious route. Upon release, fans and critics alike found the digital camerawork to be off-putting and the film failed to recoup its production budget. Now, in 2023, our hosts discuss if this film was way ahead of its time. Is Miami Vice a modern film noir classic? Was it released 15 years to early? How does the new version of Crocket and Tubbs hold up? Did The Phil Collins tune “In the Air Tonight” really need to be remade? Listen to this reexamination of Miami Vice and found out! Book Vs. Movie: Mulan The AD 6th Century Poem Vs. the 2020 Disney Live-Action FilmThe Margos are celebrating AAPI month and we are very excited about the heroine from the poem Ode to Mulan who was either a real-life Calvary soldier or not. Her bravery (fighting against “nomadic hordes”) in replacing her father in battle by disguising herself as a boy has been told since the 6th Century AD. First transcribed in the Musical Records of Old and New, during the Southern Chen dynasty (according to Wikipedia!) it was first adapted as a play in 1593 and subsequent versions used different names for the lead character. The family name is Hua which means flower and Mulan stands for “Magnolia” in Chinese. The Ballad of Mulan takes place in Northern China with Mulan's father being asked to fight off the nomadic Rourans. However, he is too old for battle and her brother is too young--so she goes to fight instead. She fights for ten years and is then asked what reward she would like for her efforts. She asks to go home and return to her former life. In the end, she claims women and men fighting next to each other should not be an anomaly. There have been several films and operas based on the story of Mulan and in this episode, we discuss the 2020 live-action version directed by Niki Caro and starring Yifei Liu, Jet Li, and Gong Li. This episode is sponsored by Kensington Books and Unstable by Alexandra Ivy. The third in a small town thriller series, which emphasizes the creepiness of small towns that hide a lot of secrets! Is it truly a proper season of Eyre on Air if we don't watch a Gong Li movie? This week we're discussing the 1991 film Raise the Red Lantern, directed by Zhang Yimou and based on the book Wives and Concubiones by Su Tong. Important talking points include America's Next Top Model (Concubine), The Muppets (as usual), and the very realistic Chinese historical drama Emperesses in the Palace. Happy listening!
Book Vs. Movie: Raise the Red LanternSu Tong's 1990 Novel Vs. the 1991 Zhang Yimpou's 1991 FilmThe Margos are celebrating AAPI month with a look at the author Su Tong and his work which has earned him millions of fans all over the world with his writing. His 1990 novel Wives and Concubines won great praise and was adapted into the 1991film Raise the Red Lantern by writer Ni Zhen and directed by Zhang Yimou. The story takes place in China in the 1930s where 19-year-old Lotus needs to become a concubine for a married man (his fourth mistress) when her father loses his fortune and dies by suicide. Old Master Chen Zuoqian is 50 years old and is “afraid of women” which makes babymaking with him a challenge for Lotus. She also has three other wives who hate her to contend with. There is also who 20-something son Feipu who knows how to play the flute. Gradually she loses her mind and we are left wondering if she ever winds up in the “haunted well.” The novella is translated by Michael S. Duke who brings the story to life as we dive right into the story and feel compassion for Lotus while questioning the motive of her Master. The 1991 film was nominated for the Academy Awards for Best Foreign Film and is a visual and musical delight. The setting is placed in the 1920s with the role of the Master set in the margins. We never see him and just hear his voice. The center of this tale is on the women and how they fight for supremacy and agency. It won the Silver Lion Award at the Venice International Film Festival in September 1991. In this ep the Margos discuss:The author's background and the controversy surrounding the sexuality of this novellaThe work of director Zhang YimouThe setting of the story (the 1920s Vs the 1930s)The cast: Gong Li (Songlian,) Ha Saifei (Meishan,) Cao Cuifen (Ahuoyun,) Ma Jingwu (Master Chen,) and Kong Lin (Yan'er).Clips used:Raise the Red Lantern trailerThe Third Mistress, Meishan, sings opera Siskel and Ebert review the film in 1992Gong Li loses her sense of selfMusic by Zhao JipingBook Vs. Good evening, and welcome to our new podcast that is only about how incredible Gong Li is. This week we're talking about 2006's gorgeous Chinese epic The Curse of the Golden Flower, starring Chow Yun-Fat, Jay Chou, and obviously, Gong Li. So strap on your rollerblades and prepare yourselves mentally for a story where literally no one is happy and weird preteens are lurking around every corner. It's The Curse of the Golden Flower!
The Mikes are taking it to the limit, one more time in this week's episode of Forgotten Summer as they go undercover and take a look at the 2006 Michael Mann film Miami Vice starring Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx. Specifically, they're looking at the director's cut. Listen in as Mike Butler and Mike Field discuss the flaws in the script and story, while praising the authenticity, the style and pure awesomeness that is Michael Mann. From the look of Miami and the dangerous and exotic Ciudad de Este, to the rough and gritty look of the final battle, Mann is a maestro of the crime thriller and proves it here. The Mikes talk about how Farrell and Foxx don't get enough screen time together to truly believe in the now iconic Tubbs and Crocket partnership, but both actors do a fine job in their roles. Field and Butler will also talk about behind the scene stories and rumors about the production. Some of the battles they faced against an unrelenting mother nature and how the director's cut adds back a little more of that Miami Vice feel (especially in a much needed re-edit) and helps to in a small part, add more sense to the still unbelievable romance between Farrell's Crocket and Gong Li's cartel accountant. So grab your badge and gun, please notice the impounded Lamborghini's to the left and right of you, crank that Phil Collins and settle down for https://my.captivate.fm/Forgottencinemapodcast.com (Forgotten Summer)!

Mulan is a 2020 American fantasy action drama film produced by Walt Disney Pictures. Directed by Niki Caro, with a screenplay by Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, Lauren Hynek, and Elizabeth Martin, it is a live-action adaptation of Disney's 1998 animated film of the same name, itself based on the Chinese folklore story, "The Ballad of Mulan". The film stars Yifei Liu in the title role, alongside Donnie Yen, Tzi Ma, Jason Scott Lee, Yoson An, Ron Yuan, Gong Li, and Jet Li in supporting roles. The plot takes place in Imperial China, where Hua Mulan, the eldest daughter of an honored warrior, masquerades as a man to take her ailing father's place during a general conscription to counter the Rouran army. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mulan_(2020_film)

The end of 2020 is here, so Not A Bomb Podcast is looking back at this unprecedented year in film and examining the biggest bombs of the year. First up is Disney’s Mulan, starring friend of the podcast - Donnie Yen. Based on the “Ballad of Mulan” and the beloved 1998 animated film of the same name, Mulan didn’t get a US theatrical release due to COVID-19. The film was finally released in the United States on Disney+ for an additionally $29.99 fee (Chinese audiences got to experience the film in the theaters). The controversies don’t stop there. The film was criticized for it’s cultural appropriation, historical inaccuracies, filming in a controversial part of China, lack of representation behind the camera, and the lead actors support for police brutality. Troy and Brad examine all the controversies, as well as the inevitable comparisons to the 1998 film, and ultimately decide if this Disney spectacle is a ‘bomb”. Yep, two grown men with daughters spend over two hours talking about a Disney movie - pack a lunch, it’s a long episode!Mulan is directed by Niki Caro, and stars Yifei Lui, Donnie Yen, Tzi M, Jason Scott Lee, Yoson An, Ron Yuan, Gong Li, and Jet Li.If you want to leave feedback or suggest a movie bomb, please drop us a line at NotABombPod@gmail.com. Also, if you like what you hear, leave a review on Apple Podcast.
Where does the $200-million Mulan stand in the pantheon of Disney's live-action remakes? We discuss the film's multiple behind-the-scenes controversies, its treatment of Gong Li's shapeshifting character, and how it panders to Chinese interests (in vain). Later, we talk about Netflix's terrible new reality series The Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives, and Asif Kapadia's documentary film Diego Maradona in light of the great footballer's death. — Hosted by Akhil Arora and Rohan Naahar, The Long Take is fully bootstrapped. #PopVultures Ep 33: What's wrong with Mulan 2020? 34:37 mins Synopsis: The Straits Times examines the ins and outs of pop culture in the Asian entertainment and Hollywood industries. This week the #PopVultures review Mulan, spoilers and all! Jan and Sam Jo give their unfiltered thoughts on the recent Disney live-action adaptation of Mulan, focusing on what they liked and hated about the film. Where is the music? What is 'qi'? Do the Chinese characters of Loyal, Brave and True look like a bad tattoo someone might get? What did Gong Li, Donnie Yen and Jet Li even do in this movie? What about the history of Mulan? What are the origins of this legendary Chinese warrior woman? Then they dive deeper into the reasons behind Mulan's dismal showing at the Chinese box office. They discuss why female lead's Liu Yifei's support for the Hong Kong police and the film's on-location shoots in Xinjiang led to a strong #BoycottMulan movement and why Hollywood's attempts at Asian representation have fallen short. Finally, they end off with some recommendations for alternative Mulan content. Björns filmtips The Mermaid från 2016.
