The film is at once the story of the the tremendous power of corporate entities to take down those who seek to share the truth with the American public and an expressionist masterpiece that showcases some of Mann's most disciplined and mature directorial work. We discuss the film's seismic lead performances from dual leads Al Pacino and a career-best Russell Crowe. Then, we praise the Michael Mann & Eric Roth script, and its critical portrayal of its subjects, avoiding lionization. Finally, we discuss the story's terrible prescience, and how the film's shock at corporate media interests overruling the efforts of journalists can sometimes feel quaint by today's standards. Read Marie Brenner's profile of Jeffrey Wigand "The Man Who Knew Too Much" in Vanity Fair. ....Our theme song is "Mirror" by Chris Fish

Following his 1995 crime epic 'Heat', Michael Mann was in a position to do most any film he desired to do. So when Disney Studios ponied up north of 90 million dollars to help him bring a thorny, wordy, action-free journalism picture to life, they probably reasonably expected a 'All The President's Men' for a new generation.  And while their efforts garnered 7 Oscar nominations, the film disappointed at the box office in part due to the difficulty in communicating to prospective viewers exactly what the film was about. And pointedly, Mann cast Pacino and Crowe exactly BECAUSE he planned to use them as they'd never been seen before. Audiences expecting Crowe to break apart a desk as he'd done in 'LA Confidential' or for Pacino to embody Satan a la 'The Devil's Advocate' were instead confronted with something quite different. Pacino as facile, intelligent man of the media. Australian-born Crowe playing a man 23 years older than him, a man with a complex speaking voice equal parts The Bronx, Japan, and Kentucky..but no part Australian. A fictionalized account of a true story, 'The Insider' is based on the battle surrounding a 60 Minutes segment about Jeffrey Wigand, a whistleblower in the tobacco industry, in particular covering his and CBS producer Lowell Bergman's struggles as they defend his testimony against efforts to discredit and suppress it by both inside business interests within CBS and by Wigand's former employer, the powerful Brown & Williamson tobacco company. In this episode, I talk about the making of this film, its extraordinary technical accomplishments, and the fantastic leading performances from Crowe, Pacino, and Christopher Plummer as 60 Minutes correspondent Mike Wallace. We hear from Mann and Crowe about the film, and play some surprising sound drops highlighting some of the twists and turns that the film presents.   Also covered: 'Miami Vice', WKRP In Cincinnati's Andy Travis and his unlikely cameo in 'The Insider', Animal House's D-Day in maybe the best scene in the whole of 'The Insider', supporting work from Colm Feore, Gina Gershon, Phillip Baker Hall, and MORE!

Season 3 has come & gone and Season 4 is here! Joel showed up to record and called an audible after finding a "film" called EVERFALL at the Dollar Tree on his way over. What's EVERFALL all about, you ask? Wellll... we don't know! We watched it and we still have absolutely no idea what EVERFALL was about. Join us for Episode 1 of Season 4 though and maybe you can figure out what this story involving figure skating, a YouTube extreme sports brah, and a ghost story from 1969 is all about. Good luck! Plot summary from IMBD: It's been a year since a tragic accident sidelined Eva (Jessica Mcleod, "Scary Movie 4, Things We Lost in the Fire") from the intense world of competitive figure skating. In the face of increasing neglect from her boyfriend Daniel (Joe Perry, "A Miracle On Christmas Lake, The Valley Below"), star of the extreme sports YouTube channel dubbed "the Daniel Show," Eva accepts an invitation from her coach (Colm Feore, "House of Cards, The Amazing Spider Man 2") to skate in a mysterious competition in the remote town of Everfall. Accompanied by Daniel and his cameraman Jordan (Kristian Jackson, "A Miracle on Christmas Lake, Heartland") the trio embark on a journey to document Eva's last chance at redemption. As a series of terrifying events unfold within the arena, the group confronts a horrifying sacrifice greater than any of them could have imagined. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/middleagedandmediocre/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/middleagedandmediocre/support

Minute Ninety-Four: From Frigga Fighting Frost Giants to Frigga Hugging Loki Joining us to discuss Frigga facing off with Laufey and Loki's surprise turn are James Anderson and Colin M. Parker, hosts of the Timeline Scavengers podcast. In the ninety-fourth minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... Frigga knows how to wield a sword as she takes down a Jotun in one blow. Why doesn't she use her witch magic though? Could they have found more ways to better work Frigga into the story? Or is this a side effect from being so early in the MCU? Laufey takes Frigga down in one blow. Ouch! Again, why no magic? It unfortunately speaks to plot needs more than anything. Laufey's red eyes look fantastic here, but his fingernail by Odin's eye is so creepy. So is that a creepy, gross fingernail or is this a well-manicured nail on Jotunheim? Does Laufey generate the ice weapons from his hands with strange secretions like Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man? Why does Laufey whisper here? And why does Loki do the same thing? Is there a reason they're so quiet? This is where Loki kills Laufey and claims he's killing him as Odin's son. So will he then change his last name from Laufeyson to Odinson? Did Laufey freeze Odin's eye open? Why does it stay open? Is this a stunt hand from someone who has naturally large hands? Or is this a mo-cap embiggened hand? This brings us into a bit of mo-cap conversation about Captain America and scrawny Steve Rogers. The reflection of Laufey in Odin's eye is frickin' cool. (Frigga'n cool?) Why does Thor fly straight to the front door instead of up to Odin's chambers? We discuss our recollections about the reveal of Loki killing Laufey here. There's been an element of Loki always taking down Laufey from the comics, so it makes sense it happens here. We work through some more thinking about Loki's plan and why he kills Laufey. This is a picture wrap on Colm Feore as Laufey, king of the Jotuns! Frigga runs to Loki to hug him. This very well could be the end of a film called Loki. Frigga, Laufey, and Loki – oh my! Minute Five: From Frost Giants to Frozen The Casket of Ancient Winters! In the fifth minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... The frost giants land in Norway. They're on the wrong side of the fjord, but that doesn't stop Laufey from releasing the power of the casket of ancient winters to not only freeze the water but also everything in its path, including our viking mother and child, who we had only just gotten to know. Oh – and it's not the tesseract. It's the casket of ancient winters. It's easy to make that mistake as they're both blue glowing cubes. Okay, so this one has handles, but still... Speaking of the casket of ancient winters, we talk about a great Walt Simonson run called The Surtur Saga that weirdly connects all three Thor films as it brings in Surtur and Malekith. Marvel surprises us by killing a kid in the film. Okay, so it's one we hardly knew, but still... There's also some talk about Norse mythology about giants, parentage, and more. The frost giants looked very different when they first appeared in the comics. They've evolved over time to land on what they look like here, but we talk about how they've changed. We also chat about their weapons, how they form ice on their bodies to use in the battle, their armor, and their tattoos. But what do the frost giants actually want? And how do they travel through the bifrost? Even if the frost giants are just twirling their mustaches, we still enjoy them. Kenneth Branagh is clearly having fun here with the Casket, the frost giants, and the Asgardians. Branagh really wanted to keep the camera in close to understand the chaos of battle. It works. But it is hard to see, particularly as it's night too. There's also a lot of handheld camera which adds to the chaos. It's kinda hard to tell the frost giants are actually taller than everyone else but you can tell when you pause. It's cool to see the frost giants' skill of growing ice on their bodies to use as weapons. Again... hard to tell in the dark. Odin uses his uru spear Gungnir to stab and flip a frost giant over him. It's pretty cool. Oh – and Odin's younger. We mostly like the look but it does make us wonder... how do gods grow old? And are they immortal? Odin brings up this fact so we're that much more confused. It's interesting how myths are created and we have some fun speculating here. Paul Nicklin and Norbert Rosing are two amazing National Geographic photographers whose work was used as inspiration for the frost giants, Jotunheim, and everything icy. Damn, Laufey's red eyes are so cool. (As cool as the casket though?) And we play the IMDb game with Colm Feore. The epic battle with the Casket of Ancient Winters is just getting started in this minute. Join in! Join the conversation with movie lovers from around the world on TruStory FM's Discord channel! The results are both humorous and moving, as Joanna, while using the great writer’s voice, begins to discover her own.About Philippe:Falardeau was born and raised in Hull, Quebec and later studied political science at the University of Ottawa, before travelling around the world for the Quebec competitive television series Course Destination Monde, on which he emerged as the Grand Prize winner. His first feature film, The Left-Hand Side of the Fridge (La Moitié gauche du frigo) which won Best Canadian First Feature at the 2000Toronto International Film Festival and received a Best Screenplay nomination at the Quebec-based Jutra Awards.Falardeau received much press attention following the release of his 2011 film Monsieur Lazhar. MOVIE DISCUSSION: As I’ve become more engaged in Christian podcasting communities I’ve come to enjoy finding new podcasts that really speak to me, and The Angry Christian Podcast is one such show that’s kept my interest. While one might think The Angry Christian Podcast is nothing more than some bent-outta-shape Christians complaining about life’s inconveniences, it’s the opposite! It’s Christians fighting for the fruit of the Spirit amidst angering and difficult times, and because of their willingness to talk culturally difficult topics, I knew inviting Brad Bates on to the Cinematic Doctrine podcast was a no-brainer. First, Brad and I share our somewhat confused thoughts on the tone of Thor as it balances between science-fantasy epic and fish-out-of-water romance. Then we deconstruct Thor's character arc from the arrogant prince of Asgard to the somewhat less arrogant prince of Asgard. And finally, we think about the difficult question of birth-right, and whether our past ultimately defines our future, and what that means for us as Christians. Thor is Rated PG-13 for sequences of intense sci-fi action and violence. It features Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins, Stellan Skarsgård, Kat Dennings, Clark Gregg, Idris Elba, and Colm Feore. Directed by Kenneth Branagh. Can either Ben or Colin do a decent enough French accent throughout this episode? How great is Colm Feore? How great is Patrick Huard? Does Ben understand all the stereotypes in this movie or is he confused? Why does Colin turn into Arnold Schwarzenegger once again in this episode? Why are all the women so horny in this movie? Do Canadians always not wear their pants around the house? What other movies and TV shows have bodies on borders? Do we like discount Don Cherry? What is the joke about New Brunswick? Why doesn't Colin know what a sex scene looks like? Why does everyone have a name that involves a bum? And who does the evil killer remind of us? The Irish film director, who brought us The Crying Game (1992) and Interview with the Vampire (1994), has been steadily working through the 21st century on movies and TV. When we saw he was joining forces with the great French actress Isabelle Huppert for a thriller movie called Greta, we had to see what the result was. We hit up the AMC Sunset 5 and recorded this podcast Live on the Sunset Strip. One Lodger was unable to complete the entirety of the film, but the rest of us remained for a pretty basic psychological thriller. On this episode of Gotham TV Podcast we follow up our Hush Volume One review with a chat all about Batman Hush Volume Two (Volume 2 Collected; Issues #6-13). Written by Jeph Loeb with art by Jim Lee and Scott Williams this story arc was originally released as Batman 613-619. Again this volume follows the story of Tommy Elliot (Played by Cole Vallis on Gotham Episode 8) and his relationship with Bruce Wayne. In a story arc filled with twists and turns we find out the identity of the villain Hush and why all of Batman's rogues gallery have been acting differently. We always appreciate our listeners who share our episodes and we have a few thank you's to Cole Vallis, and Gotham Originals who shared our review of Hush Volume one with their followers on Facebook. Gotham News the Dollmaker mentioned in Episode 2 of #Gotham will appear on the show. Colm Feore, who played King Laufey in Thor and also appeared in Amazing Spider-man 2 is making the leap over to DC to take the role. Dollmaker, real name Dr. Francis Dulmacher, has been teased since the second episode of Gotham, in which his creepy henchmen Doug (Frank Whaley) and Patti (Lili Taylor) name him as the culprit behind the mass kidnappings of the city’s street children. We wonder if John's theory on the Dollmaker will come true. Comicbook.com had the news up on their site DC Connected News Supergirl has been cast for the upcoming CBS show as Supergirl herself, the young Kara Zor-El. We don't know much about the show yet but the big question given that CBS are part owners in the CW channel which airs Arrow and The Flash, will Supergirl exist in the same universe as those two shows. Only time will tell. The full story is available over on IGN.com Thanks as always for listening we'll talk to you again soon with another episode of Gotham TV Podcast.
