Kicking the movies of this year off, Ian picked the 2008 postmodern psychological drama film Synecdoche, New York. Written and directed by Charlie Kaufman in his directorial debut, it stars Philip Seymour Hoffman as an ailing theater director who works on an increasingly elaborate stage production and whose extreme commitment to realism begins to blur the boundaries between fiction and reality. The film also stars Samantha Morton, Michelle Williams, Dianne Wiest and Tom Noonan. Come join us!!! This is the podcast where we dive into some of cinema's biggest box office failures and explore whether they deserve a second chance!Sadly, Listener Request Month has reached its final full moon, but don't worry—Troy and Brad are still howling with excitement for the last suggestion. Did anyone else just get the strangest craving for pizza? We could use a little snack here at Spooky Tuesday, especially since we've got nothing to do for the rest of the night besides play the harpsichord, try on other people's glasses, and snoop through this big old house while babysitting some old lady. Oh, yeah — and we're watching The House of the Devil (2009). Welcome to Waxing the Porpoise, the podcast that dives deep into the unexplored depths of cinema and occasionally the unexplained. This week G-Baby and the Usual Suspect Steve tackle Thomas Harris' opening salvo in his Hannibal Lecter series of books in the screen adaptation of the first book Red Dragon directed by the ineffable Michael Mann in the form of Manhunter from 1986 starring William Peterson, Dennis Farina, Tom Noonan and last but not least Bryan Cox as the first (and some would argue best) to portray Hannibal Lecter on screen. Join us as we discuss the many incarnations of the Hannibal Lecter story and mythology across print, TV and film and the various characters and varied actors who've played them, take a look back at now antiquated grocery products, outdated forensic techniques, and learn about region-locked DVDs and Blu-Rays for Steve's edification. The porpoises, midnight companions and keen observers, go full Will Graham to get the scent back and go inside the mind of a killer before the next full moon in order to stave off another round of grisly slayings. Jay Leno and Pat Morita starred in a moving picture called Collision Course and we somehow decided to watch it and talk through our many complex feelings about it. We're joined by Adrian DeLaTorre from the Never Seen It podcast and take a look at this barely-existant artifact of late 1980s Hollywood, racism, and economic-based, lizard-brained fear. Is Jay Leno too nice/square to even believably pretend to be a jerk and/or drunk? Wait, w-w-w-what did Pat Morita nickname himself in the 60s and 70s?!? Why so many cookies for sale at a crime scene? How much better was Tom Noonan's revised version of the script? Bazookas, factory jobs, 'Merican can-do-it-ness, Biker From Hell (slash Raising Arizona), inexplicable lines and their delivery, etc. Detroit was fine until the Japanese ruined all the fun. When a Promise Meant Something: Sean Penn's The Pledge November is the month of Rick Ramos and this week we continue - following Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon and Walter Hill's Hard Times - with a look at Sean Penn's 2001 The Pledge. Featuring an underrated (and I would argue tragically underseen) Jack Nicholson performance that sidesteps all of the Nicholson tropes that we have become used to, Nicholson portrays Jerry Black, a police detective on the eve of his retirement who leaves his retirement party to investigate a young girl's rape and murder. He is quickly sucked into the horror of the crime and finds himself obsessed with discovering the truth and bringing the killer to justice. Penn's film takes all of the labored and tired tropes that have become standard for the genre and manipulates them in ways that make for a fresh directorial take. Featuring an all-star cast (that never screams of stunt casting) including: Sam Shepard, Helen Mirren, Aaron Eckhart, Patricia Clarkson, Michael O'Keefe, Vanessa Redgrave, Robin Wright Penn, Harry Dean Stanton, Benicio del Toro, Tom Noonan, and (an incredible) Mickey Rourke, the 2001 film is one that truly speaks to Penn's power and gifts behind the camera. Take a listen and let us know what you think. You can reach us at gondoramos@yahoo.com. Many Thanks. As always, we continue to look to you good and loyal listeners for support. If you have listened and enjoyed our bantering over these nearly eight years please feel free to support us with a monetary contribution. We're not asking for a whole lot. Welcome to an altogether new show here at Cinema Degneration we are calling "Without Warning." The theme for this show is unlike any other in our lineup. Hosted by Cinema Degeneration CEO Cameron Scott and his co-host, author, voiceover artist, and host of 'The Diabolical Index' Korey Dawson. The theme is simple: Scott calls Dawson out of the blue with no warning as to what the topic of conversation will be...without warning if you will. Scott will continuously test the overall skill and level of pop culture and movie expertise of Mr. Dawson with totally random topics including movies, literature, pop culture, music, art, comics and more. Dawson has absolutely no prior knowledge to these show topics and is going into the discussions totally blind. These shows are a hoot to record, and we hope as much fun for the audience to listen back to. The 5th episode show topic is on "ANIMAL VILLAINS". Essentially you are all in for a deep dive discussion on multitudes of films that were based on some iconic and not-so-iconic Animal Movie Villains. Topics range from Cujo, Grizzly, Man's Best Friend, Alligator, Lucky, Willard, Kingdom of the Spiders, Jaws, Black Sheep, plus many many more. Included in the festivities are various rants and segways into topics such as the Creepshow franchise, Larry Cohen movies and the actor Tom Noonan! Join us!
This week we're using a part to represent the whole and the whole to represent a part as Wrestling Brain's Josh Custodio joins us to go deep on the human condition with 2008's Synecdoche, New York, written and directed Charlie Kaufman, starring Philip Seymour Hoffman, Samantha Morton, Michelle Williams, Catherine Keener, Tom Noonan, Hope Davis and Dianne Wiest. Kaufman's directorial debut, coming hot on the heels of Eternal Sunshine, is at once an absurdist comedy and a devastating tragedy, with Hoffman giving what might be a career-best performance in a life that was full of great ones. Plus: losing faith in streamers, playing the same song on repeat, Jesus on the radio, movie-going as therapy, and how to get hooked on pro wrestling. Beyond the wider screenwriting resume of Charlie Kaufman, other works discussed in this episode include Annihilation, You Springin' Springsteen On My Bean?, Pokemon GO, Fishing with John, The Leftovers, Beau Is Afraid, TMNT: Mutant Mayhem, Bottoms, Aquaman, Joker, The Prestige, Arrival, Children of Men, Upgrade, There Will Be Blood, Beau Travail, Napoleon Dynamite, Mad God, and Walk The Line 2: Joaq The Line. If you want to watch the movie before listening to our discussion, you will have a hard time streaming it legally. So go buy it on physical media. It's a great movie, we promise you won't regret it. And be sure to catch Josh and Zubes every Wednesday night for A-E-Double-Dudes on the Wrestling Brain channel on Twitch, those guys are the best. We'll be back next week doing lord knows what! Elaine and Mark from The Honeymoon Period podcast return to Flixwatcher to review Elaine's choice Heat. Heat (1995) is a heist drama written and directed by Michael Mann. Its ensemble cast features Al Pacino as Lieutenant Vincent Hanna, LAPD, Robert De Niro as Neil McCauley, Val Kilmer as Chris Shiherlis, Jon Voight as Nate, Tom Sizemore as Michael Cheritto, Diane Venora as Justine Hanna, Amy Brenneman as Eady, Ashley Judd as Charlene Shiherlis, Mykelti Williamson as Sergeant Bobby Drucker, Wes Studi as Lieutenant Sammy Casals, Ted Levine as Detective Mike Bosko, William Fichtner as Roger Van Zant, Natalie Portman as Lauren Gustafson, Tom Noonan as Kelso AND Hank Azaria as Alan Marciano. Neil McCauley leads a gang of elite criminals, but when a robbery of bearer bonds goes sour when one of the crew kills a guard he ends up in the path of Lieutenant Vincent Hanna, a hardened and obsessive detective. McCauley discovers Hanna on his tail but doesn't spook and agrees to one last heist. Heat is widely considered a masterpiece, the now iconic coffee scene marked the first time Pacino and De Niro shared the screen together and it is one of Christopher Nolan's favourite films. Recommendability scores reflected some of the criticisms (particularly around the role of women) but were still high. Lower scores for small screen reflected that it is one of those films best watched the big screen and gives an overall rating of 3.75. Hello, today I talk about the 1986 American thriller film directed and written by Michael Mann. Based on the 1981 novel Red Dragon by Thomas Harris, it stars William Petersen as FBI profiler Will Graham. The Manhunting crew has finally reached their eponymous movie! Join Rob, Dia, Alex, and returning special guest Patrick Klepek as they discuss Michael Mann's adaptation of the first of the Hannibal Lecter novels Red Dragon. It's a fascinating look at one of the earliest serial-killer-profiler-gets-in-too-deep movies with a performance by William Petersen that would go on to inspire the TV version of Will Graham in the hit series Hannibal, a surprisingly grounded Brian Cox turn as Hannibal Lecter, and Tom Noonan being uncomfortably method as serial killer Francis Dolarhyde. Where you know him from: Manhunter (1986), The Monster Squad (1987), and RoboCop 2 (1990)This month on Interviews After Dark we talk to actor, Tom Noonan! The boys were beyond thrilled to talk to this legendary character actor about his strange and varied movie career, but what they got was so much more than they could have hoped for! Not only does Tom Noonan talk about auditioning for the role of 'Francis Dollarhyde' in Manhunter (1986), but he also talks about his time in an artists commune when he was younger, his desired to be the fastest guitar player in the world (which he let go of when he discovered acting), and so much more! It truly is one of the more interesting (and intense) conversations they've had thus far.Thank you to our Patreon members for making this episode possible! May's theme is MICHAEL MANN MAY and next up on the docket is the crime thriller that also happens to be the first film adaptation of Thomas Harris's “Hannibal Lector” novels. It's not as well known as Jonathan Demme's “Silence of the Lambs” but it stands out in its own special ways with some genuinely creepy and memorable performances. We're talking about Michael Mann's third feature film from 1986, “Manhunter”. It stars William Petersen, Tom Noonan, Dennis Farina, Joan Allen and a criminally underrated performance by Brian Cox as “Hannibal Lector”. Go watch this. It's better than all the movies post-Silence of the Lambs. Imagine an alternate universe where Michael Mann tackled ALL of the Hannibal Lector movies. That's a lot of Tangerine Dream! Ahead of Things We Like's premiere, director Adi Jahic joins Split Picks to discuss his debut feature and an underseen classic from a beloved character actor. Writer-director Adi Jahic spoke with Split Tooth back in February about his excellent debut film,Things We Like, which he also edited and features him on screen in a crucial second act role. Early in the conversation, Jahic noted that he's rarely inspired by films in the traditional sense, never watching anything while at work on a project or making conscious homage. He credits Tom Noonan's What Happened Was..., however, with convincing him to set out on directing a feature-length film of his own. Jahic describes the 1994 Sundance Grand Jury Prize Winner as, like the best features, “saying a short film's worth of things every 10 minutes.” Things We Like premieres next week at the Philadelphia Independent Film Festival. In anticipation of the May 17 screening, Jahic joined associate film editor Bennett Glace to discuss how both his film and Noonan's present viewers with unexpected emotional turns, the benefits of the occasional mishap on set, and more.

Raise of the Week: Cycle Labs out of Raleigh, NC raised $6.5M this week from Jurassic Capital. Cycle Labs provides a continuous test automation software platform to large enterprises worldwide. Co-founded by CEO, Josh Owen, Cycle Labs has 30 employees and now has some more dry powder to put to use. Also, AdPipe out of Athens, Georgia raised $3M dollars led by Atlanta Ventures with participation from Tom Noonan. AdPipe repurposes, repackages, and reposts content from your existing library of videos and makes them shorter and crisper with attractive copy so clicks are 3-4x of traditional, static marketing collateral. Congrats to Andrew and Sam! Several funds are in the process of closing or just closed a new round. Starting first with Cofounder's Capital out of Raleigh, NC. It was announced this week that they closed their 3rd fund of $50M. Cofounders Capital was started by David Gardiner and they invest in the earliest of early opportunities mainly in the RDU area. Congrats on their raise and more fuel for the ecosystem. Keeping it in the funds category, TTV Capital closed their most recent fund of $250M. Led by Gardiner Gerrard. News of the Week: Fast Company came out this week with several lists including a few that we have highlighted before on the podcast. The first category is the Top 10 Innovative Companies with under 10 people and on that list is Franklin Junction. Franklin Junction matches food brands with underutilized kitchen space, making them a host kitchen – which is different from a ghost kitchen. Now a name brand food can be cooked in a kitchen with a completely different name and easily picked up and delivered to your doorstep…even if there is not a traditional restaurant location available. The next list from Fast Company is the Top 10 Innovative Companies in Wellness and number two on the list is Reframe out of Atlanta. Reframe provides cognitive behavioral therapy on demand, offers a personalized daily alcohol reduction program, craving management tools, community support groups and coaching. Beta Product of the Week: Jordan and Scott Arogeti started a new company that helps people grieve around a death. Mi Alma (“my soul”) in Spanish offers resources necessary to not only aid in the initial grieving and times of need, but also creates a space where memories can live on in an active and meaningful way. Features include: community-wide collection of pictures, stories, and memories of the deceased with a “support registry” that makes it easy for anyone that's inclined to give money, meals, or time. If you're grieving over a lost family or friend, check out Mi Alma. Blog Post of the Week: The Godfather of SaaS is putting out superb content and the one worth highlighting today is his 5 Learnings from TradeDesk which offers self-service SaaS for Adtech. Here are three: first, the company was founded in 2009 and has been profitable since 2013. Just this past quarter it was announced they had a 42% adjusted EBITDA margin on 1.6B in revenue for the fiscal year. Second, they've been able to keep their sales and marketing spend at about 19%, which is half of what most fast growing companies spend on go-to-market. Lastly, they grew fast but not insanely fast. After hitting $100M in ARR, they grew anywhere from 28-76% a year, each one of them being profitable. Today they are over $2B in ARR, profitable, and in today's markets that efficiency is rewarded through a $28B market cap. We put the post in the show notes. Annnnd that is five minutes! Today's Listener Takeover pick comes to us from John G. Forget what you think you know about the Hannibal Lecter movie series. Did you know that Anthony Hopkins wasn't even the first actor to play the famous cannibal? That's because a little movie called Manhunter came out in 1986 which officially kicked off the Hannibal series of films.Suffice to say the Anthony Hopkins Hannibal movies are the standard today, how will this grandfather of the series stack up? Was it done right the first time, or was Red Dragon totally necessary?
