Paul and Erin review two films based on women writers' accounts of their time in psychiatric institutions: James Mangold's 1999 drama GIRL, INTERRUPTED starring Winona Ryder and an Oscar-winning Angelina Jolie, and Anatole Litvak's unusual 1948 drama starring Olivia de Havilland.
https://notesonfilm1.com/2024/07/08/thinking-aloud-about-film-ritrovato-round-up-2024/ Richard and I return to the podcast with our Ritrovato Round-up. Last year I couldn't go due to health reasons and I interviewed him; this year, the tables were turned and he interviews me. Ritrovato is so vast and generous in its programming that everyone who attended would have had a different experience of the festival. This is an account of mine. We criticise the booking system and people's piggish habit of taking out their phones during screenings. Cinephiles do know better, which makes it all the worse. The rest is mainly hossanas. We praise Daniel Bird's programming of the Parajanov Strand. We note how even seeing familiar films can be the basis of a rediscovery and discuss how the programme of Dietrich films at the festival should re-write the narrative of the Von Sternberg/ Dietrich collaborations from one of a Svengali act of moulding to a feminist act of self-creation. We touch on Delphine Seyrig, the Dark Heimat Strand, Gustaf Molander, Anatole Litvak and highlight Carlos Sauras' Los golfos and Montxo Armendáriz Tasio from the Cinema Libero strand. We also discuss seeing films at the stunning Cinema Modernissimo, watching Les parapluies de Cherbourg at the Piazza Maggiore and many other bits and bobs.

Our Warner Bros. 1940 episode this time is a Bette Davis double feature in which Bette plays the Other Woman in two melodramas based on real-life sex-and-murder scandals, but the Wronged Woman in only one. We discuss the combination of sexual repression and critique of colonialism in William Wyler's The Letter and Anatole Litvak's study of societal constraints and thwarted romance with the very different setting of the last years of the Orléans monarchy in mid-19th century Paris, All This, and Heaven Too. Then, in a quick and dirty Fear and Moviegoing in Toronto segment, we evaluate David Cronenberg's mind-fuck gaming movie, eXistenZ, from 1999 (with spoilers, so skip it if you want your mind to be a virgin for the experience). It's 1938 and Warner Bros. is in its prime, and so is Bette Davis, just now moving into the kind of top-quality romantic melodramas in which she'd excel. No longer the studio of James Cagney, Joan Blondell, gangster heroes and Busby Berkeley spectacles, it's now the studio of Bette Davis, Errol Flynn, glossy melodramas and action-adventure heroes; or at least, these stars and genres are co-existing with Cagney, Robinson, John Garfield, and soon, Humphrey Bogart vehicles. Warners is broadening its range and turning into the greatest of the studios (prove us wrong). As for this episode: The Sisters (Anatole Litvak) stars Davis and Flynn as ill-matched lovers contending with gender role expectations and Flynn's obscure demons. Then in The Dawn Patrol, Edmund Goulding's anti-war masterpiece, Flynn transfers his affections to David Niven and his piebald pjs. Even though there's not a single woman glimpsed and barely a woman mentioned, Flynn, Niven, Basil Rathbone, Donald Crisp, and Donald Crisp's imaginary dog achieve enough emotional intimacy and relationship intensity to satisfy any viewer under Goulding's direction. Lee and Leah get into the mind of the criminal element when they cover the Anatole Litvak-directed, and John Huston-written crime & comedy film, "The Amazing Dr. Clitterhouse" (1938). Is this film a bit deeper than it lets on? Is Edward G. Robinson really all that great a guy in this? Is this just the Stanford Experiment? Are they talking about what one might think they are talking about with the Clitterhouse name? What did Humphrey Bogart think of this film? All of this and more, including what the hosts have watched as of late. "The Amazing Dr. Clitterhouse" IMDB Check out our friend Thomas' YouTube channel here.
