Dennis is joined via Zoom by author Frank DeCaro to discuss his gorgeous and glittery new coffee table book Disco: Music, Movies and Mania Under the Mirror Ball. Frank talks about why he wanted to write about disco, what makes a song a disco song, the MAGA-esque Disco Demolition riot that helped kill disco fever in the U.S. and the long list of unlikely performers who jumped on the disco bandwagon like Bill Cosby, Frank Sinatra, Ethel Merman and the cast of the TV cop show Barnaby Jones. Frank and Dennis also discuss their affection for disco fashion, from polyester shirts to Angels Flight slacks to Jordache jeans to sky-high platforms. Frank also shares the unlikely but meant-to-be story of how he managed to score a Donna Summer interview for the end of his book when Summer herself has been dead since 2012. Other topics include: the head-scratching ubiquity of the Village People, the timeless magic of Saturday Night Fever, disco tchotckes, The Brady Bunch Variety Hour, and the allure of Studio 54, which, as Frank's book describes as "a dictatorship at the door and a democracy on the dance floor."
Has the First Amendment rebounded from the Covid era? A generation of Americans saw what life was like without it. And Annie is flying high Wednesday with the Blue Angels. We are accepting all advice.

Welcome back to Eyes on Gilead, our weekly podcast dedicated The Handmaid’s Tale. There’s a LOT going on in this show and we think it helps to talk it out after every episode. Today, we are recapping episodes 1 and 2 of season 4 of The Handmaid’s Tale. Be sure to watch both episodes, as we will analyse them back-to-back. Spoilers, obviously. In these episodes: On the run after the end of Season 3, an injured June and the fugitive Handmaids find refuge at a farm, where the 14-year-old Wife nurses June back to health. June restores her role as the women’s leader. In Gilead, an imprisoned Lawrence tries to avoid a death sentence, and Aunt Lydia reels from the loss of 86 children on Angels’ Flight. The combative Waterfords, in custody in Toronto, learn of June’s feat. THEN June plots revenge at the local Jezebels, before she and the Handmaids plan to leave the farm for the next safe house. In Toronto, Moira deals with the fallout of June’s choices, and Serena and Fred are bound together by a miracle. With two episodes to recap, let's get into it.

California is a world-class destination for all sorts of travelers—including history buffs. Visitors can find rich historical gems in surprising and delightful ways, from hidden plaques in San Francisco's Portsmouth Square and Chinatown to Angels Flight, a still-operating funicular in downtown Los Angeles that dates back to 1901. Many California cities can trace their roots back to Native peoples, European explorers, the Gold Rush, and a melting pot of cultures that blended over hundreds of years. On this episode of the California Now Podcast, host Soterios Johnson delves into that history in three iconic California cities: San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego. Johnson starts out in the City by the Bay, connecting with author and San Francisco historian Gary Kamiya about how the city has played host to bootleggers, the Beat Generation, and everything in between. Next, Johnson speaks with Robert Petersen, host of the Hidden History of Los Angeles podcast, about some little-known aspects of La-La Land culture—including everything from Walt Disney’s favorite haunts to peacock crossings in Arcadia. Finally, Johnson talks to Bill Lawrence, president and CEO of the San Diego History Center, about how the confluence of San Diego's Spanish settlers, the military, science, and popular culture make for a fascinating history lesson—and a one-of-a-kind sightseeing experience.
THE ELECTRIFYING ANGELS FLIGHT by Joy Munson This book is a continuation of "The Electrifying Demise" that Jim Munson wrote, with Joy's(wife) help side by side at the computer in 2008. Joy wrote this sequel in 2020. Jim had a fatal fall in 2018 and left many unfinished manuscripts of other stories and detailed notes and ideas. He had told Joy to destroy them but she did not and one day she made a decision to complete as many of these efforts to completed projects somehow. Today his legacy and my(Joy's) dream are real. Other projects will accompany Jim's legacy as Joy's new exciting career as an author is also Jim's legacy to her. There is a website: HTTP:// http://www.joy-stories.net;also Joy on Facebook; Instagram; and movie trailers, creations by my publisher, MatchStick Literary on YouTube as well this interview and others. Joy was born in 1930 and has lived many exciting memories,i.e. the remnants of the great depression, homes without plumbing and electricity, pandemics of tuberculosis, diphtheria, scarlet fever, red measles, mumps, influenza and now Corona Virus. WWII and poverty were hardships of my generation, needless to mention the many hazards of life in general! I must mention, my parents were wonderful and wise always. https://www.amazon.com/Electrifying-Angels-Flight-Joy-Munson/dp/164858540X www.joy-stories.net http://www.bluefunkbroadcasting.com/root/twia/jjmunson2.mp3

In this rather overdue episode (Oops, sorry about that), I finally review The Angel’s Flight by Louise Anne Bateman - the sequel to The Angel’s Shadow and second book in her Angels of Music series. In particular, I review the really superb full-cast dramatized audiobook of the novel! Btw, correction, you can find the info on where to get Bateman’s first book in the show-notes and blog-post for episode 9, not 10. Sorry about that! And you can, of course, find The Angel’s Flight in print, ebook and audiobook formats at any of the following: https://www.amazon.com/Angels-Flight-novel-Phantom-Opera/dp/1729545076 or https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07NYBR1H6/ref=sr12?ie=UTF8&qid=1550951092&sr=8-2&keywords=Louise+Anne+Bateman or https://www.amazon.com/Angels-Flight-Novel-Phantom-Opera/dp/B07NW4WNWJ/ref=tmmaudswatch0?encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr= to enjoy!
