I was being a dutiful father, standing in line at the local supermarket pharmacy, patiently - maybe impatiently - waiting for my daughter's prescriptions to help her recovery after having her wisdom teeth removed.  I know it couldn't have been a fun procedure, so waiting in line for a little while hardly seemed like a chore. And there it was... The NARCAN display.  Prominently positioned directly on top of the pharmacy counter in between the two registers, with a giant sign behind it, "You can PREVENT death" (or maybe something along those lines.  And it got me thinking - that is ABSOLUTELY NOT about "prevention".  Much like many of the ideas and products we are sold today, they are not meant to prevent illness or death, but only mitigate it once we are already sick. What would happen if we focused on PREVENTION again? To contact Dr. Dan go to www.DanielAFranz.com or email me directly at DrDan@DanielAFranz.com To find out more about what we have going on over at The Meaning Academy, or to sign up for YOUR SEARCH FOR MEANING go to: https://www.themeaningacademy.com/ To support your favorite podcast on Mental Health & Meaning, pick up some meaningful The Meaning Project Podcast merch in our store at https://the-meaning-project-podcast.creator-spring.com/ And finally, if you would like to support our efforts to improve the podcast and maybe even connect with Dr. Dan in different ways, become a Patron on our Patreon page at: https://www.patreon.com/themeaningprojectpodcast.

pWotD Episode 2468: AFC Asian Cup Welcome to popular Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of a popular Wikipedia page every day. With 182,822 views on Saturday, 3 February 2024 our article of the day is AFC Asian Cup.The AFC Asian Cup is the primary association football competition contested by the senior men's national teams of the members of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), determining the continental champion of Asia. It is the second oldest continental football championship in the world after Copa América. The winning team becomes the champion of Asia and until 2015 qualified for the FIFA Confederations Cup. The Asian Cup was held once every four years from the 1956 AFC Asian Cup in Hong Kong until the 2004 tournament in China. However, since the Summer Olympic Games and the European Football Championship were also scheduled in the same year as the Asian Cup, the AFC decided to move their championship to a less crowded cycle. After 2004, the tournament was next held in 2007, when it was co-hosted by four countries in Southeast Asia: Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam. Thereafter, it has again been held every four years. The Asian Cup has generally been dominated by a small number of top teams. Prominently successful teams include Japan (four times), Iran, Saudi Arabia (three times each) and South Korea (twice). The other teams which have achieved success are Qatar (2019 current champions), Australia (2015), Iraq (2007) and Kuwait (1980). Israel won in 1964 but was later expelled and has since joined UEFA.Australia joined the Asian confederation in 2007 and hosted the Asian Cup finals in 2015, winning the competition in the final against South Korea. The 2019 tournament was expanded from 16 teams to 24 teams, with the qualifying process doubling as part of the qualification for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Qatar Airways, state-owned by Qatar, has sponsored the AFC Asian Cup since 2023 as part of Qatar's global soft power strategy. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:44 UTC on Sunday, 4 February 2024.For the full current version of the article, see AFC Asian Cup on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Salli Neural.

Kevin Franke faced an agonizing revelation this past August. He found his wife, Ruby Franke, and their family therapist, Jodi Hildebrandt, detained, with his two youngest children in a healthcare facility for critical malnourishment treatments.    In the year leading up to this grim discovery, Kevin had only received infrequent communication from his now-estranged wife. This drastic shift in family dynamics traces back to the involvement of marriage counselor, Jodi Hildebrandt, in their lives. In a candid conversation with PEOPLE, Kevin's attorney, Randy Kester, expressed, “Kevin was taken aback. The allegations against Ruby and Jodi left him stunned. It dawned upon him the magnitude of deception he had been subjected to."    The couple, who once reveled in the limelight due to their "8 Passengers vlog" on YouTube, had amassed a dedicated following of approximately 2.5 million subscribers. Their content chiefly revolved around the daily adventures and life lessons of their six children. However, even this digital haven suffered a setback when the couple decided to part ways, a year before Ruby's dramatic arrest.    Eyewitness accounts and police allegations shed light on the distressing environment the Franke children were exposed to, particularly in Kevin's absence. With Ruby and the two youngest residing at Jodi's residence, there are serious accusations concerning the treatment of 12-year-old Russell Franke. Claims have emerged about him being physically restrained with ropes, and even more distressingly, of cayenne pepper and honey being deliberately applied to his injuries by Ruby and Jodi.    Diving deeper into Jodi Hildebrandt's background reveals a checkered professional history. She commenced her association with the Frankes in 2021. Prominently specializing in sex addiction, Jodi faced reprimands from state authorities back in 2012, owing to an improper relationship with a client. That very year, following her personal battles of a divorce and strained ties with her children, Jodi launched 'ConneXions'. Her venture, as advertised on her website, pledges to "empower individuals to thrive in their relationships," with an emphasis on liberating individuals from "distortions" to embrace "Truth, connection, and freedom."    This counselor-client relationship between the Frankes and Jodi intensified, culminating in a pivotal trip involving Ruby, Kevin, and another therapist. Post this journey, Ruby's perspective on her marriage had radically shifted. Recollecting this phase, Kester quoted Ruby's exact words to Kevin: "Your attitude is infesting the family." She firmly believed that their only recourse was separation. Kevin, despite these developments, continued attending several sessions a week with Jodi. In a turn of events, when their son Chad decided to reside with Kevin, Jodi intervened, advising separation. According to Kester, Jodi's influence permeated so deeply that Kevin became increasingly isolated, with Ruby being granted limited access to contact him.    However, red flags had been raised about the family earlier. In June 2020, social workers began probing into the Franke family dynamics, spurred by unsettling content on their YouTube channel. This included incidents like Ruby openly denying lunch to 6-year-old Eve and then 15-year-old Chad confessing to sleeping on a beanbag for a staggering seven months following a harmless prank on his sibling. Yet, these inquiries hit a dead-end as Utah's Division of Child and Family Services couldn't validate the abuse claims.    Recent times saw Ruby frequently shuttle between her residence in Springville and Jodi's home in Ivins, Utah. During one of these transitions, they were apprehended, following consistent efforts by an alert neighbor and the couple's estranged daughter, Shari, 20, to alert authorities. Voicing his concerns, the neighbor stated, “Child protective services conveyed that their hands were tied until a calamity occurred."    Currently, both Ruby and Jodi are incarcerated at Washington County Purgatory Correctional Facility, awaiting legal proceedings, while their counseling licenses remain suspended. Kevin, although interrogated, has not faced any charges. However, the debate on his role rages on. A concerned neighbor remarked, "Is Kevin culpable? Absolutely. His decision to vacate the home was critical."    In a landscape rife with digital celebrities, this distressing tale underscores the reality that not all that glitters online is gold. The Franke family's unraveling story serves as a reminder to always look beyond the screen. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? In December 1936, a villager was led by a dream to the ruins of the West Mebon shrine in Angkor where he uncovered remains of a bronze sculpture. This was the West Mebon Visnu, the largest bronze remaining from pre-modern Southeast Asia, and a work of great artistic, historical, and political significance. Prominently placed in an island temple in the middle of the vast artificial reservoir, the West Mebon Visnu sculpture was an important focal point of the Angkorian hydraulic network. Interpretations of the statue, its setting, date, and role have remained largely unchanged since the 1960s--until now.  Integrating the latest archaeological and historical work on Angkor, extensive art historical analysis of the figure of Visnu Anantasayin in Hindu-Buddhist art across the region, and a detailed digital reconstruction of the sculpture and its setting, Marnie Feneley brings new light to this important piece. Paul Hobbs is a world-renowned winemaker. In 2013, Forbes Magazine referred to Hobbs as “The Steve Jobs of Wine”. He has been twice named “Wine Personality of the Year” by Robert Parker of The Wine Advocate. Over his 40+ year career, Hobbs has received more than ten 100-point scores across his portfolio—a rare feat that places him in the top echelon of the world's winemakers. He graduated from Newfane in 1971, earned his BS in Chemistry from the University of Notre Dame in 1975, and MS in Viticulture & Enology from the University of California, Davis in 1978. Regarded as an international visionary for his accomplishments in the vineyard and winery, Hobbs combines his childhood roots on the family farm in Western New York with an innovative scientific approach to refine the art of winemaking. He is recognized across the globe for breaking with tradition and forging new paths in the pursuit of excellence; both in stewardship of the land, and the crafting of wines that represent the purist concept of place – leading the way in the early 90's as a pioneer of site-specific, vineyard designate wines. Robert Parker notes that “Paul Hobbs is like a good truffle-hunting dog when it comes to finding great vineyards.” In 1979, he was appointed a member of the inaugural Opus One winemaking team joint venture between Robert Mondavi / Mouton Rothschild of Bordeaux. Later, a first trip to Argentina in 1988 marked the beginning of what today has become a highly consequential South American winemaking career. Prominently featured in Ian Mount's “The Vineyard at the End of the World: Maverick Winemakers and the Rebirth of Malbec,” Hobbs is recognized for his legendary status as the pioneer winemaker who played the leading role in launching the variety's rise to fame. Today, Hobbs is owner and vintner for eight wineries around the world: Paul Hobbs, Crossbarn, and HOBBS (California), Hillick & Hobbs (Finger Lakes, New York), Viña Cobos (Argentina), Crocus (Cahors, France), Yacoubian-Hobbs (Armenia), and Alvaredos-Hobbs (Galicia, Spain). On this episode, Paul joins host Mitchell Davis to explain terroir, share life lessons learned from winemaking, and discuss finding integrity in the way food is grown. This is the final installment of the Unstarving Musician websites for musician series. I decided to call this one "Everything Else." You can find links to the first four episodes in the series in the show notes for this episode at UnstaringMusician.com, episode 248. Choosing A Theme We'll begin with choosing a theme. Look for a theme with a design layout that supports your brand and vibe. The theme should be a fit with your music, while supporting your goals. Your theme needs to look good without compromising usability and simplicity.  The menu layout should be easy for visitors to navigate. A menu located at the top is always good, and locating it on the side is okay too. Sub menus should be easy to find. And it all needs to be easy to read. Not everyone has 20/20 vision! Your theme should allow for easy content creation and layout And it should be or have:  Easy to customize A responsive design (mobile friendly) Updated regularly Features you need Good ratings and reviews An active support team Optimized for search (SEO) A popular theme provider for WordPress is themeforest.net. I encourage you to also consider a Wordpress core themes, if you do in fact choose Wordpress as a platform. Site Content Homepage content is arguably the most important, as it will be your most visited page. Begin by defining your purpose. The objective of the copy should support the goals of your music business. Example goals include: Sell merch or services Build traffic to increase revenue Attract new fans Generate leads Attract subscribers and build a community Understand Your Target Audience As you write copy, consider that it should hook prospective fans and supporters. You want to get into their mindset by thinking about these questions. Who are the people coming to your site? Are they fans, supporters, venues, talent buyers, venues? What problems do they want to solve? What search terms would they use to find music sites like yours? By writing in the ways that your visitors speak and search, you can start building up a relationship of trust. If you answer their specific questions or solve their problem, they may become your loyal audience.  Know Your Competitors In the musician world, knowing your competitors can be thought of as “know your peers.” See what other artists in and around your genre are doing, and take note of what appears to be working for them. Borrow ideas and find inspiration in knowing your competition and peers. Lessons from the business world Search your main genre, product, service, or topic in Google. Discover which sites are ranking, and investigate what they are doing. What is the primary thing they offer? And how are they offering it? What type of content do they use on their main pages (success stories, videos, statistics)? What audience are they targeting?  Hook Your Readers from the First Line You have 15 seconds or less to capture your site visitor's interest. If you manage to do this this, your next challenge is to get them to stay on the site. You can start your copy with some exciting news or data, a one-sentence story or a question. Make sure people are hungry for more content after reading your site introduction.  Make Your Copy Scannable Your site layout is important. Most people skim read, so ensure that the text is easily scannable for them. Include headers, bulleted and numbered lists, descriptive subheadings and white space between paragraphs.  Help Readers Navigate There are multiple ways that audiences find web content. It could be from a post shared on social media, via links on other websites, via a marketing email or through a search engine results page.  People who find out about your website might not be that familiar with your brand or music, but they will appreciate a website that's clear in what it offers. Use relevant links for further details in your copy. Prominently display links to your social media accounts on your website to create connection between your brand and site visitors. I recommend including social links on every page of your website, or at least on your home, contact and about pages. People may leave your site, but they may become your social media followers and return to the site later. Talk to Readers as You Would a Friend Create a bond between your brand and the client using techniques like these: Use an active voice sentence structure like “You can book us for your private event” instead of “Our band can be booked for private events.” The passive voice is relevant when you want to sound more formal; in other cases, use the active voice to sound more personal. Address your readers directly with “you," “we” to speak from the point of view of a company (or band), and “I” for an individual voice. Write in Layman's Terms Keep your copy concise and simple. Research from The Literacy Project (sadly) tells us that the average American reads at 7th to 8th-grade level. By using simple language, you're more likely to help readers understand and remember more of what they read on your site. Use short sentences to help communicate your message clearly. Limit the use of adverbs and adjectives to keep sentences short and snappy. Avoid industry jargon.  Not all readers are experts, so replace professional terminology with simpler alternatives and use hyperlinks to other articles to provide additional information. Proof read your copy to avoid spelling and grammatical errors. Encourage Readers with a Call-To-Action (CTA) The purpose of your web copy is to encourage some kind of action. Perhaps you want visitors to make a purchase, subscribe or join your mailing list. By including a clear call to action using words like “Join,” “Sign Up,” “Get a Call,” “Subscribe,” “Watch,” and “Learn More” you can help to initiate the desired action.  Demonstrate that your CTA is worth it. A good strategy is to include some proof to back up statements you have made about your products or services. This might be through success stories, original research data, customer testimonials, press releases, awards, a relevant expert's biography, or partnerships. Your site visitors and subscribers will also appreciate freebies like free music downloads or some type of useful and hard to find information. Add Visuals People remember only 20% of what they read, but 80% of what they see and do. You can help site visitors process info by including infographics, pictures, graphs or videos in your copy. This will also help grab their attention.  Optimize for Search Engines You aim to produce copy which will be valuable to site visitors and help them to make decisions. Here are some need-to-know basics of SEO (search engine optimization). Include keywords in headlines and sub-headers Add your primary keyword to the title and H1 (primary heading) Included 5-10 additional keywords to subheadings and body text Include metadata by describing specific images, links and pages in 1-2 sentences Make your URLs readable to help your readers to understand what's inside the page Add relevant and helpful links to encourage visitors to stay on your website Optimize your visual content by adding alt tags to images and by resizing them  Keep Your Website Fresh and Up to Date Refresh your content from regularly by adding new relevant information Monitor the performance of your copy. Underperforming copy may need more examples, tips, and practical details. Repurpose your content by trying different formats, such as video  and incorporating it into your website. Optimize internal linking. Add links pointing to new articles and blog posts with related topics Core Elements Recap & Reminders These are core elements that should be part of your site content. Logo Header image Artist bio Mailing list sign-up form Music samples Professional photo(s) Video News & upcoming shows Social media icons Ways for fans to support you (i.e. tips, subscription, purchases, etc.) Add an online store A well organized navigation menu Email Forms & Incentives “Email remains an essential way to communicate with your most invested fans.  Grow your list of contacts by adding a sign-up form to your Home and Contact pages. Make sure to collect those emails as a concrete way to reach people with your newsletters.”  – Bandzoogle “The most successful musicians have learned that email marketing is one of the most valuable tools a musician or band can have.” –ConvertKit First, start a list. If you've been collecting emails at shows or for venues, use them. Start with a spreadsheet, as they can be easily uploaded to any email service. Your fans want to connect with you. If someone joins your email list, they're officially super fans. They want to hear from you. They didn't sign up to hate your or delete your emails. :) They might not know they're super fans until you give them a reason to subscribe.  Ways to get fans to join your email list Trade a free song for their email address Offer a one-time discount on merch Add a pop-up form to your website with an offer to send a discount code for your online store Have email list exclusives like ticket pre-sales Always make big announcements to your email subscribers first   Email is an owned—not rented—relationship The fans you have on your social media profiles are essentially rentals. Social media companies can and will completely throttle your reach, requiring you to pay to get posts in front of your fans' eyes. The bigger your following gets, the smaller percentage of fans who see your posts–unless you pay to boost them. Compare this to email marketing. Every time you send an email to someone's list, you're almost guaranteed that they will get that email in their inbox. Unlike social marketing, email marketing lets you own the relationship with your audience.  It's easier than ever to use email marketing software. These days, email providers like ConvertKit make every element of email marketing—from getting new subscribers to converting sales relatively easy. For example, if you wanted to only send emails to certain geographic regions, you used to have to create spreadsheets and lists with different subscribers. Not anymore. Email service providers include geo-data, giving you a better idea of where your subscribers are actually located. If you're into automating things (and you should be), you can now automate an album release cycle with the click of a button. Automation takes something that's a huge process—like promoting an album before its release date—and automates a huge chunk of the work for you. Totally worth the time investment to set up. Your email list offers revenue opportunities Here are some ways to make money through your email list. Tips If you're still recording your album and don't yet have merch to sell, you can still make money via tips. You can use a third-party service like Buy Me a Coffee, Venmo, or CashApp. Or you can ask your fans to send tips directly through ConvertKit's Tip Jar. You can add a tip jar wherever you want to collect tips from fans. Here are a few ideas:  • Social media profiles and bios  • Email footers  • Website pop-ups or animation  • Link page feature  Record and merch sales Your email list should be part of your album release strategy, but you needn't stop promoting your record once it's out. You can continue to promote your album through your email list—even selling digital copies directly through ConvertKit. Fan club subscriptions You can create fan club subscriptions with Bandzoogle or ConvertKit. Fan clubs are a tried-and-true method of wrangling your biggest supporters to not only support you regularly, but also build a long-lasting relationship with them. Through digital subscriptions, you can set multiple tiers with different support levels, much like Patreon. Ticket sales Ticket sales are where having a big email list really helps. If you have a large and diverse email list on a service like ConverKit, you most likely have useful geo-data. This means that when fans open your emails, you'll have a good idea of their location, meaning you can send them emails tailored to the shows closest to them without giving the rest of your list a case of FOMO.  Raise money to record your album These days, bands can go directly to their fans to crowdfund their albums, and you can do the same on Bandzoogle, ConvertKit and many other platforms. Selling Music Merch and More If you have the right product, you can create significant additional income. Start creating products by first developing your brand identity. Do your best to create strong brand identity that provides a unique way of identifying with fans.  When brainstorming merch concepts, think about:  • What are you trying to communicate through your merch?  • What do you want people to remember about it?  • How do you want your fans to feel when wearing, using or displaying it?  Create high-quality merch by ensuring your photos, designs and marketing are up to date and on brand. Your merch company can likely provide some high-quality photos for use these on your site. I can't stress enough the important of making your merch look high-quality and professional. Printful is one company that helps artists design, print and ship merch and they integrate will with Bandzoogle and Wordpress. They have on-demand service, so that you only pay when you have orders. Printful can also print and ship everything under your artist brand with custom labels and other branding options.  Look to other artists for inspiration on how to promote your merchandise, and make your merch accessible to your fans. Merch doesn't need to start and end with tees and hoodies. Be creative and culturally relevant. It's not all about profit. Do your best to produce things that are relevant to your audience. Set Up Shop Choose an eCommerce platform that suits your niche, and build your merch store. Your e-commerce options include Shopify, Woocommerce for Wordpress, Bandzoogle, Bandcamp, ConvertKit and more. Link your store to your social media. Link your merch on your streaming profile (e.g. Spotify profile). Some streaming services allow you to sell merchandise directly to fans. SEO (Search Engine Optimization) This is a big topic, so try not to get overwhelmed. Just take this part, one bite at a time. Research keywords, such as popular artists or hits, that fans might use to search for your music. After finding the keywords, use them in the metadata on your website and content. Include synonyms of the keywords to cover the variety of search terms that your fans are likely to use. You can use tools like Google analytics and Spotify for artists to prime your content.  Optimize your website  • Meta descriptions help internet users to get an idea of the type of music you create.  • Title tags are the headlines that the search engine will find when users search for content.  • Headers are titles that separate different sections of a post on your website. Update your website frequently, as Google crawlers prioritize unique content when ranking webpages. This could include posting snippets on different issues and linking to new songs on YouTube. Use a reputable website hosting company. This will help your site speed. The hosting company you choose should guarantee 99.9% uptime. Enhance fan engagement Keyword optimization should involve creating content that enhances fan engagement.  One way of doing this is by updating your site with the latest and greatest content related to your brand. Create new pages for every event and new music releases. Your site should be optimized for all searches related to events and music. Optimize for mobile–this is important! The good news is that most platforms handle the heavy lifting in this area. Just make sure that all the content can load quickly on mobile devices.  Create Backlinks Backlink is an SEO term, and is a powerful way of improving the rankings of your site. You can generate backlinks by making guest posts on popular music sites and by soliciting mentions from social media, YouTubers and even venues where you perform. One strategy I use for this podcast is asking guests to link to their episode and embed their episode on their website. Create a YouTube channel YouTube is second only  to Google in terms of search queries, so it helps to have a strong presence on this channel. A YouTube channel will attract fans to your curated content and direct them to your affiliated sites. YouTube has tools to help you optimize your channel. Create YouTube playlists. Google favors channels with playlists. SEO music marketing is a long-term commitment. Digital marketing for musicians can be a daunting task. Take it one bite at a time, and you can always hire a digital marketing agency to optimize your content.   Launch The key to a successful and effective launch is to get the word out so people know about it! Here are five website launch announcement ideas: Announcing your launch date and time on social media  • A countdown is a great hype element!  • Give your followers plenty of notice, so they can plan on joining the party!   • Give fans and followers behind-the-scenes images and sneak peeks  • Create buzz by sharing photos and teasers about the new website Share details about the process and plant seeds about the launch long before you release specific details. Invite your followers to stay tuned for announcements.  Keep the conversation going and generate as much hype and anticipation as possible before your site goes live. Another great way is to create hype and engagement is to send people to your site before launching, with a coming soon page that captures their emails and creates intrigue. This is also a great spot to have a countdown clock. A coming soon page will also help by giving you a way to bring attention to it on your social channels, while ensuring everything is still private until launch day. Blog about it and have a freebie or giveaway Launching your new website is not only about teasing, but also creating valuable content, and a freebie is a great addition to your launch and get people interacting with your content. You can create a blog post about your new website launch (really tell the story of the process) and have a freebie or giveaway as an add-on to get people on board with following you and not just visiting for the launch to never come back. You can also use this opportunity to promote products that you plan to release when your site is live!  Send an email to past venues and customers Reach out to past venues and customers to let them know about the new website and all the cool stuff you have planned with it. They're likely to appreciate the update. You might even renew a relationship in the process. If any of these people are influencers or have complimentary audiences, you can ask them to share the news of your website launch.  Continuity and Maintenance Websites require fresh content. The also require maintenance. These facts are important to search-ability and user experience of your website. Fortunately, the maintenance part can be greatly automated. Most hosting platforms offer full automation of site maintenance. The primary facets of maintenance and continuity are security, software updates, backups and link checking. There are other nuances, but these are among core areas that you should pay close attention. Maintenance on a self-hosted Wordpress site will require more hands on planning than if you use a platform like Bandzoogle or Squarespace.  Content requires you, the creator. Sometimes this can feel unfortunate, but then again you are a creator. :) The key to consistent content creation is planning, and the best tool I can think of for this is a content calendar. I use a Google sheet and Trello recommend for this. However you do it, it's important that you have a means of capturing ideas and planning out your content.  Planning can include drafting social posts, scheduling music release content and outlining articles. When it comes to capturing ideas, you can do this in a physical notebook or on your phone. What you don't want to do is come up with a great idea during a walk or in the middle of the night, only to forget the idea. So write it down! Or dictate it with your phones voice recorder. You can add it to your content calendar later. The best advice I can offer here is to NOT launch it and forget it. Nothing good will come of that. Have questions about any of this. Links to participating podcasts can be found in the show notes.                                                                                                In today's episode, we will hear the fictional story of Mrs. B's Haunted Trinket Shoppe. Betty Brandon, better known as Mrs. B, owns an antique shop with a twist, the objects she sells are all haunted! One winter day a customer comes in with a strange request, leading to a situation even Mrs. B couldn't have imagined. So, get settled in… grab a blanket, and a warm drink… and let's get started. The old woman firmly turns the key in the lock, and a loud click echoes on the other side of the door. The veins on her pale white hand stretch as she grasps the brass handle, and the heavy oak door creaks loudly as she pushes it open. The woman is greeted by a multitude of items haphazardly strewn on shelves, stacked in the dark corners of the room, and placed at random on the rough wood planks of the floor. Prominently displayed in the center of the store, guarded by the glass of the checkout counter, is her prize possession: An antique doll-sized baby carriage. The old woman takes off her coat and places it, along with her purse, on a vintage coat tree by the front door. She then walks across the store and steps behind the counter to flick on a series of light switches. The space around her lights up, revealing an astounding assortment of antiques and collectibles. The clicking of her shoes against the floor swirls around her as she makes her way to the front window. Her shaky hand grasps the small wooden sign hanging there and flips it so the word Open is visible to people outside. As the old woman is making her way back to the counter the creak of the shop door causes her to turn on her heel. “Hello Mrs. B! How are you today?” the mail carrier's voice blows in with the brisk November wind.“I'm well, Samantha, thank you,” smiles the old woman. “And how are you? How is that adorable little boy of yours?” she asks. The pair make small talk as Samantha pulls a stack of envelopes and two packages out of her bag and places them on the checkout counter.“Ah, I've been expecting this one with bated breath!” exclaims Mrs B as she pulls one of the packages toward her.“I'm almost afraid to ask...” Samantha laughs nervously, “...what is it?”“It's a tin soldier, from a small town in Ireland called Roundstone,” replies Mrs. B as she settles herself onto a stool to carefully unwrap the package.“Mhm... and... what else is in there, with the soldier?” asks Samantha tentatively. The old woman chuckles. “I'm told it's the ghost of an old man who collected such trinkets.”“But...” pushes Samantha, “...you disagree?”A smile stretches across Mrs. B's mouth. “Indeed, I do. There is no such spirit in this box.” She pauses for effect before adding, “In reality, it is the spirit of a small boy named Daniel attached to the soldier. He is about the age of your boy. He died during the Great Famine in the 1840s”.A shiver runs down Samantha's spine as she closes her mail bag. “Well, on that chipper note, I'd better get on with my route!” she says in a sing-song-y voice before letting herself out the door. The old woman sits on the stool, her back straight as a rod, a relic of her days at The Aviary Finishing School. One hand fiddles with the locket around her neck as the other reaches between the sheets of tissue paper to pull out the toy soldier. She holds it up to the light, turning it this way and that to inspect it from every angle. Her inspection complete, she places the soldier on the counter and looks straight ahead toward the shop door. “Hello Daniel,” she says, her voice entirely matter of fact. A casual onlooker would think she is speaking to an empty room, they wouldn't be able to see the small, rail-thin boy with dirt on his face whose bare feet hover just above the planks of the wood floor. At the sound of the woman's voice the boy promptly vanishes. Mrs. B hangs a price tag off the toy soldier and displays him prominently at one end of the counter next to a few other trinkets and a sign that reads New Arrivals.“Jennifer, you get back here right now!” a woman's voice carries through the door from outside. The door opens slowly and a child walks in, her cheeks red from the cold and the effort she has mustered to push the door open. “Jennifer! I need you to put on your listening ears!” the woman's exasperated voice, closer now, sneaks in from outside again. The child giggles and runs to a small vanity in the corner of the shop. She sits on the child-sized stool and begins to brush her hair with an antique silver hairbrush. “Jennifer!” the woman has finally made it into the store, her face flushed from a combination of running and frustration. “I'm so sorry,” she heaves out the words in Mrs. B's general direction as she scurries to grab the hair brush out of her daughter's hand.Mrs. B twirls the chain of her locket around her fingers as she watches the scene unfold. “It's not a problem, really...” she says, unsure whether the woman is even listening. The old woman then makes her way around the counter and walks up to little girl. “Jennifer, is it?” she asks, crouching to meet the child at eye level. The little girl nods, her light brown curls bouncing around her face. “You know, this is a very special hairbrush, it once belonged to a woman named Charlotte, see the initials C.C. engraved on the back?” The small girl inspects the back of the hairbrush and nods. Mrs. B continues, “Charlotte was very kind, and she loved children. I think she would be rather pleased if you were to have this.” The child's eyes grow wide, and a smile stretches across her face.“Oh, that's not necessary...” interjects her mother.“I insist,” says Mrs. B, standing to look at the mother with a knowing look in her eye.“Well, that's very kind of you. What do we say, Jennifer?” The woman gives the girl a light shove.“Fank you,” says the little girl.Mrs. B, bends once again to face the girl, “You're most welcome,” she says, then straightens up to address the girl's mother. “I think you will find this brush will keep her quite busy, I'm sure you'll be grateful for a little reprieve,” she says. The woman's brow furrows momentarily, then she nods, grabs the little girls hand, and pulls her out the door, throwing a quick, “Thanks again!” over her shoulder as they walk out.Mrs. B watches as the ghost of a tall woman in a green flapper style dress trails behind them. “Goodbye, Charlotte,” says the old woman quietly. The ghost turns and holds up a pale hand in acknowledgement before disappearing through the door. Mrs. B returns to her perch on the stool behind the counter and begins sorting through a stack of bills. She heaves a sigh. Sales always slow down in the winter, and this year the snowy roads put an early end to tourist season. The summer was decent, bringing in groups of curiosity seekers and even a team of paranormal investigators that she had to shoo away with haunted broom, its accompanying ghost looking on with amusement. The old woman chuckles at the memory and places the stack of bills under the counter. There will be plenty of time to deal with them later. The creak of the shop door causes her to look up. The silhouette of a tall man with a wide brim hat blocks most of the light from outside. The man strides in and steps up to the counter where Mrs. B is sitting.“Are you the owner?” the man has a smooth English accent.“I am Mrs. Brandon, better known as Mrs. B,” replies the old woman. “May I help you?”The man nods, the confidence he walked in with faltering slightly. “I'm looking for... something specific,” he replies.Mrs. B looks at him quizzically. “And what makes you think that what you are looking for will be found here?” she asks, her arm making a sweeping gesture toward the overflowing contents of the store. The man's spine stiffens, “I have tracked h- ... erhm, the object... to this location,” he says.“Very well, which object is it you are looking for?” asks the old woman, her curiosity piqued. The man remains silent and points to the checkout counter. Mrs. B follows the line of his forefinger, and realises he is pointing at the antique doll carriage enclosed within the glass beneath it. “I'm afraid that item is not for sale,” the old woman tries to sound confident and is frustrated to hear a crack in her voice. She nervously grabs her locket with one hand and begins twisting its chain.“I will pay handsomely. I will purchase the entire shop if I must. I have the means...” says the man.“That's all well and good Mr....”“Marlowe, Jack Marlowe,” says the man.“Mr. Marlowe,” begins Mrs. B, “this item has been in my possession since before you were born. It was a holiday gift from my great-aunt Esther when I was but a girl, and it is very important to me.”The man's face sinks. He leans his elbows on the counter and looks down at the carriage through the glass. “You don't understand...” he says.“With all due respect, Mr. Marlowe, I believe it is you who does not understand. This item is not for sale, that is non-negotiable.”The man heaves a sigh and shifts his head up to look at the old woman, now sitting rod-straight on the stool and staring at him with a piercing gaze. “Could you at least explain to me why? I understand sentimental value, but with the amount of money I would be paying you could buy 8000 carriages just like it!”“I'm afraid this carriage is one-of-a-kind ...but something tells me you already know that,” replies Mrs. B.The man grunts and steps back from the counter. “Fine, so you know about the ghost. Name your price.” The old woman stays silent, her gaze unwavering. The man's patience begins to wear thin. “I'll pay you three timeswhat your shop is worth!” he exclaims, throwing his arms in the air with exasperation.“Mr. Marlowe, what you fail to realise is that I don't simply know about the ghost, I know the ghost. I grew up with her. For years, she was my only friend. We have been in each other's lives for decades. She protected me when I was a child, and today I am the one who protects her.” Mrs. B pauses to study the man's face and body language. He is now shifting his weight nervously from one foot to the other. “You have such a keen interest in this ghost, perhaps it would further your cause if you were to explain why,” she says.A long silence hangs in the air between them as the man appears lost in thought. Finally, he pulls a chair from a nearby dining set and sits across the counter from the old woman. “Fair enough,” he begins. “Three years ago, my wife was diagnosed with a rare medical condition. I've spent every day since searching for a solution, a cure, anything, even if only to slow the progression and give us more time, but to no avail.” The man appears to be choking back tears.Mrs. B waits patiently as he composes himself. She remains on guard, suspicious that the man may be spinning a sob story to gain her sympathy. “Just as I was going to give up and accept her fate, our fate, some new information came to light. You see, the condition is thought to be genetic, and some specialists theorize that perhaps a transfusion from a close relative could reverse the effects of the disease. My wife is an only child, and her parents both died when she was young, so the information didn't seem relevant, until...” the man's voice trails off.“Until what?” asks Mrs. B. She has let her guard down slightly and is increasingly invested in the story.“This is going to sound ridiculous,” hesitates the man.“Respectfully, Mr. Marlowe, I own a shop that sells haunted objects, I highly doubt what you say next will sound any more ridiculous than that,” replies the old woman. The man smiles nervously. “Right. The information didn't seem relevant until, out of desperation, I went to a psychic. I know it sounds preposterous, but I had nothing left to lose. The psychic told me my wife had family she was not aware of, that her grandmother had a twin sister who became estranged from the family and that she'd gone on to have a daughter of her own before passing away. The child was only three years old with no father present, so she was sent to an orphanage.” Here he pauses and leans in slightly toward the old woman, as though intent on gauging her reaction to what he will say next. “The girl's name was Willow, Willow Martin, and her mother's name was Matilda.”At this, Mrs. B's eyes grow wide. “That can't be,” she whispers. The man continues, “I took the psychic's information with a grain of salt, but I did do a quick online search when I got home. When I typed in the names Willow and Matilda Martin, the first thing to pop up was a blog discussing a decades-old news article about a little girl whose family was convinced the doll carriage she had received for Christmas was haunted by a ghost named Matilda Martin. I tracked down that little girl, and it took some doing, Mrs. Brandon – your married name it turns out – but I finally figured out who she was,” says the man, laying his palms flat on the counter and meeting the old woman eye to eye.“Indeed, that little girl was me, and Matilda's ghost is attached to that carriage to this day,” says Mrs. B, still in mild shock. “But I don't understand how purchasing this carriage, and Matilda's ghost, will help you... or your wife,” she adds.“Ah, that's the thing isn't it. You see, Matilda's daughter was shuffled around from orphanage to orphanage before being sent to a residential school, and then the trail goes cold. I can't find any record of her, it's like she disappeared. I've tried every avenue I can think of with nothing to show for it. I'm desperate, and I'm hoping Matilda has some sort of... connection... with her daughter, and that maybe her ghost can help me find her.”“I see,” ponders the old woman. “Rather than spending your life savings, and me giving up a cherished item, what if we simply ask Matilda for help right here, right now?”“That would certainly... that would be wonderful. I was trying to avoid having to tell the entire story, it sounds so completely ridiculous, but I'm desperate. Anyway, it's a bit late for that now, isn't it?” he chuckles. The old woman slips a key ring out of her pocket and sifts through the keys until she lands on a small silver one. She bends to unlock the cabinet below the checkout counter and slowly pulls the doll carriage out. She carries it around to the area where Mr. Marlowe is sitting and sets it on the floor as he pushes his chair out of the way.“I haven't spoken to Matilda in years,” says the old woman nervously. Her face takes on a more serious tone as she steps back from the carriage and looks around the room. “Matilda?” she asks tentatively.A mist forms in the chair where Mr. Marlowe had been sitting only minutes before. The man takes an instinctive step back, his eyes stretched as wide as they will go and his mouth slightly agape.“Matilda, it's me, Betty,” whispers the old woman as she walks toward the chair.“Betty...” the voice is barely audible, like the faintest hint of a summer breeze.“Matilda, this is my friend Jack, and he needs your help. He is trying to find your daughter, Willow. Do you think you can help him?”The mist has fully formed into the shape of a woman now, her bare feet hovering just above the ground. She appears to be in her early twenties. Her dark hair falls in a loose braid on her left shoulder, and she is wearing a long gown with embroidery at the neck, cuffs, and hem. “Willow... Willow is here,” says the ghost Matilda.“Wh-what do you mean, here?” asks Jack Marlowe, taking a step toward the ghost.“Willow is gone...” the words come out painstakingly slowly, as though conjuring them requires a great deal of energy, “...gone from your world. Now she is here,” whispers the ghost. Her shimmering arm lifts as she points a finger toward something in the corner of the room. Mrs. B and Mr. Marlowe's heads turn in unison. The old woman struts to a bookshelf in the corner and scans the contents, returning with a stack of books. “These came from one of those... schools...” she says, the disapproval clear in her tone.  She sifts through the books and holds up a well-worn manual on laundry and sewing. Mrs. B addresses the ghost as she turns the book over in her hand, “Matilda, are you saying that Willow has passed on? That she is attached to one of these books in my shop?” The ghost Matilda nods, a look of agony washing over her face. The old woman stares at her in shock. How could she have missed this connection? It seems unfathomable that she didn't know.“Mama!” a small voice comes from behind Mr. Marlowe. He spins on his heels and jumps to the side as a ghostly young girl comes running from the darkness behind him.“Willow, my darling! Kisâkihitin! (Kee-sa-kee-tin)” Matilda's ghost stretches her arms out to greet the child with a hug. The living beings in the room stand in stunned silence as they watch the two ghosts embrace.“What's going on, I don't understand... Has anything like this ever happened before?” asks Mr. Marlowe.“No, I've never seen anything like it,” says Mrs. B. “But, as wonderful as it is for these two to be reunited, I'm afraid it isn't good news for you. It would appear that Willow died in childhood, which means she cannot help you, nor did she grow old enough to have any children who could,” she adds. Her eyes fill with sorrow as she lays a comforting hand on the man's shoulder.Mr. Marlowe puts his hand up to his mouth, finally realizing the implication of what has just transpired. He takes several minutes to recover, then clears his throat. “I understand. Thank you for your time. I... I should be on my way,” he says, wiping a stray tear from the corner of his eye. He grabs his satchel from the floor and flings it over his shoulder before making his way to the shop door, never looking back at the ghostly mother and daughter.“I wish you all the best, Mr. Marlowe,” says Mrs. B through a crack in the door as the man walks dejectedly away under the falling snow. The old woman closes and locks the door, then turns back toward the ghosts. “I am so sorry you were apart all these years; I had no idea...” she begins. The ghost Matilda comes to her, the look on her face indicating she bears no ill will. Mrs. B gives her a nod, then carefully carries both the carriage and the book back into the glass cabinet below the checkout counter. Now the pair can be together.Mrs. B walks across the wood floor and flips the sign in the window to Closed. It has been a long, emotional day, and with the snow accumulating outside she is doubtful any more customers will show up. She steps back behind the checkout area to flip the light switches off. The store is instantly washed in darkness. The old woman expertly navigates the darkened space and grabs her coat and bag from the coat rack by the front door. “Goodnight, Matilda. Goodnight, Willow,” she says before letting herself out of the shop and into the cold, snowy world outside.ONE YEAR LATERThe young woman behind the counter looks up as the door creaks open. “Hello, welcome to Mrs. B's Trinket Shoppe, how may I help you today?” she asks the couple, who is busy stomping snow off their boots before coming through the door. “Oh, hello there!” says the man. “I wasn't expecting... Erhm... Is Mrs. Brandon in today?” he asks.“No, I'm afraid... uhh... she's not,” says the young woman, visibly uncomfortable.“Ah, well, no matter. Perhaps you could let her know that Jack Marlowe stopped by... Scratch that, rather, please tell her Mr. and Mrs. Marlowe stopped by,” he says, grinning as he puts his arm around the woman, presumably Mrs. Marlowe. She looks up at him with a smile. The young woman's cheeks redden as she shifts on her stool. “I'm afraid I can't do that,” she begins, “you see, Mrs. B passed away last year.”The man stops in his tracks, the smile instantly wiped from his face. “Oh, I see. I... I had no idea. I'm so sorry... she was a lovely lady. One of a kind,” he stammers. The young woman nods quietly. “That's what I'm told. I never actually met her; I moved here about three months after she died and saw a sign in the window that they were hiring. Turns out her brother took over ownership of the store, but he lives across the country and needed someone local to help run it.”“Right...” says Jack Marlowe, scanning the contents of the shop. "I suppose he's the one who re-branded by dropping the word Haunted from the shop's name?" he asks. The young woman behind the counter shrugs. Jack wanders around the space, inspecting a tin soldier on one of the shelves, and noting that the dining set and chair he had sat in that fateful day are still right where he left them a year ago. Suddenly, something in a display case catches his eye. “What can you tell me about this item?” he asks, lifting a locket on a chain from the velvet-lined case.“I believe that was from Mrs. Brandon's personal collection,” answers the young woman.“Brilliant!” he whispers under his breath. “I'll take it,” he tells the young woman.Mrs. Marlowe joins him at the counter. “What about these items, how much are you asking for them?” she asks, pointing at the doll carriage and antique book in the glass display case.“Uhh... I don't know, I was told those were significant in some way,” replies the young woman.“How about this, I'll pay you... three times what they're worth,” offers Jack Marlowe. The girl hesitates. “Sales have been slow since Mrs. B passed away... I suppose it would help the store stay afloat,” she concedes as she grabs a set of keys to unlock the display case.“I was so excited for you to meet her...” says Jack as he and his wife walk out of the store. The snow crunches loudly beneath their boots. He loads the carriage and book into the back of their car and turns to look at his wife. “I wanted to show her that miracles happen,” he says, a grateful smile on his face.“Deep down, I feel like maybe she knows...” says Mrs. Marlowe, leaning to place a soft kiss on his cheek. The pair get in the car and drive down the winding road through the magic of the falling snow, each lost in their own thoughts as Mrs. Marlowe holds the locket between her palms. Every so often, Jack glances in the rear-view mirror and smiles. From the back seat, Mrs. B, Matilda, and Willow smile back.Thank you so much for listening.  Please be sure to follow The Nightcap and The Paranormal Truth podcasts who will elaborate on the real-life account of a haunted carriage that inspired this story, as well as haunted objects in general. Then, join me next week for a one-of-a-kind episode in collaboration with The Haunted UK podcast. Nudge by Richard H. Thaler and Cass R. Sunstein

Prominently lauded and recommended on the book cover by Daniel Kahneman – co-author of ‘The Undoing Project,' along with Amon Tversky - 'Nudge' is the practical application extension of Kahneman and Tversky's theory and research in behavioral economics. To give just one example, Thaler and Sunstein brainstormed ideas for normalizing gay marriage in the first edition of their book, published in 2008. In their 'Final Edition' - the version I read - they explain that governments around the world, rather than relying on nudges like they recommended, just passed laws declaring gay marriage the law of the land. And they were happy with that. But Thaler and Sunstein say “We do not support a position known as “Presumed Consent,” but we do support freedom of choice.” And by this they seem to consistently mean what Progressives all over America do when they talk about being Pro Choice - freedom of choice for those whose humanity is fully recognized and affirmed. Expressing a notably low opinion of conservatives and conservatism as contrary to progress, Thaler and Sunstein proposed government getting out of marriage entirely in their earlier edition. The civil union strategy was to serve as a kind of end-run around traditionalist and conservative arguments against by playing games with the language. They were also pleasantly surprised Obama came out in favor of gay marriage in a reversal of course from his initial campaign claims and pledges. Countries that legalized gay marriage in the early 2000's and 2010's listed in 'Nudge,' each homosexual coming out of the closet is cited by them as an individual 'nudge.' So also, they talk about how in 2013 an openly homosexual bar association was admitted to argue cases at the U.S. Supreme Court for the first time, introducing 30+ lawyers who were homosexuals to Supreme Court Justices. This too served to nudge SCOTUS to the 2015 decision that judicial body made in Obergefell v. Hodges. Meanwhile, from a social and cultural standpoint, presenting normalization of acceptance for homosexuals and thereafter gay marriage as an up and coming reality, an inevitable trend, helped to make the same into a self-fulfilling prophecy even before it was actually a reality. In other words, they lied. They created the false impression, much like Ben Rhodes bragged about creating an echo chamber of disinformation in the American media regarding the Iran Nuclear Deal. It didn't hurt that David was both Ben's brother and president of CBS News from 2011-2019, by the way. But “people can even nudge themselves" seems a kind of after-thought for Thaler and Sunstein. The realization of such gets downright creepy when you come to the chapter on organ donation and an exploration of options available to governments regarding the supply and demand of transplantable organs, including the suggestion that a market could be created for them to be bought and sold. Isn't that what the CCP has been doing? And it gets downright menacing when they talk about government responses to COVID and Climate Change around the world, in no small part with the help of their influences. 'The Prince,' 'Propaganda,' 'Rules for Radicals' - Thaler and Sunstein's work feels like a dressed-up and modernized version of these and other books I've read which the Left in the U.S. especially is fond of using for strategic source material. It would seem Progressive realpolitik decided to put on a smiley face just as Goldberg's 'Liberal Fascism' foretold. The cure for what ails American society is not more nudges. The solution is for manipulative folks to stop manipulating the Nudged Enough Already. So maybe we need a new political movement. We'll call it the NEA Party. It'll be like the TEA Party, but countering nudges instead of taxes and regulations. Those who join soonest and fight hardest we will call “the knights who say NEA.” --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/garrett-ashley-mullet/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/garrett-ashley-mullet/support

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Wednesday, September 15, 2021 CONTACT: Breanna Bang, Public Information Liaison Changes to Arizona Law Regarding Advertising Requirements for Contractors PHOENIX, Ariz., (September 15, 2021) - Advertisements for home repairs and remodeling services are everywhere from Facebook to Angie's List. Arizona recently passed legislation changing the advertising requirements for licensed Arizona contractors, making it easier to advertise on television, radio and online. Advertising by Licensed Contractors Currently, licensed contractors are required to list their ROC license number on all published advertisements, vehicles with contractor signage, radio advertisements, television advertisements, letterheads and other documents used to correspond with the licensee's customers or potential customers Beginning on September 29, 2021 (the general effective date for 2021 Arizona laws), new legislation allows an exception to that requirement. Licensed contractors no longer need to include their license numbers on vehicle, radio, internet or billboard advertising if the advertisement includes a web address AND if the license number is “prominently displayed on the website.” Prominently displayed on the website means: The advertisement complies with all other requirements listed under A.R.S. § 32-1124 and A.A.C. R4-9-109; The provided website address links directly to the licensee's home page; and The licensee's name and ROC license number: Appears directly on the licensee's home page; Is clearly visible, and is not hidden behind graphics, photos, or other obstructions; Is in an appropriately sized font; and Is not in the website's footer. Note that licensees are still required to include their ROC license number on all bids, contracts, estimates, and documents used to correspond with the licensee's customers or potential customers. See A.R.S. §§ 32-1124(B)(2) and 32-1158(A). Advertising by Unlicensed Individuals and Entities The new legislation does not change the advertising requirements for unlicensed individuals or entities. In addition to not being allowed to advertise or perform any of the work required to be completed by a licensed contractor, unlicensed entities are still required by Arizona law to have the exact phrase “Not a Licensed Contractor” on any and all advertisements. Home and Property Owners Arizona Registrar of Contractors reminds Arizona home and property owners that just because an ad says it, does not mean it's true. Always check the license before hiring a contractor by visiting the Agency's website at www.roc.az.gov or by giving the Agency a call during normal business hours at (877)-692-9762. ###

Sports leagues ALWAYS try and show their passion to fans by sometimes staging very heartfelt events like the upcoming "Field of Dreams Game" Of course MLB wants to SHARE their compassion with their fan base by extending the Kevin Costner great movie by the same name that was full of nostalgia. After all. they say, "If you build it, they will come" yet, MLB wants the fans to come at a hefty "Ripoff" price that makes it impossible for an average fan to attend, not to mention Nike who makes sure of course that their swoosh is PROMINENTLY displayed on the throwback uniform, especially designed for the game. While the theme of the event is high class, it shows once again how much a league can grab all the money they can and, ripoff the fans with ticket prices so exorbitant that only Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos can afford.                                                       Join Sports beat host John Spoulos as we take a look at the latest money grab by a league who's future is dubious to say the least. That's right Moody and myself are heading back out on the road and this time we're bringing Logan to carry our shit instead of us lugging everyone else's shit! Why are we heading out on tour you ask? Well it's because we are doing a tour of haunted music and theater venues throughout the world! This is an episode we've been wanting to do for a while especially because we've been to quite a few of these places! There's even one in our home town! Like we have at that certain Cleveland venue, we're sure some of our listeners have spent a ton of their time at some of the venues on the list. This is gonna be a fun one for us so hopefully you guys love it too! First up we've got a big one that will be on every list of haunted venues. The House Of Blues in Chicago. So the history of the building took a bit to find because every search for the house of blues in any city comes up with the main house of blues page but with a little digging we found some info on the building's history. The House of Blues is part of a complex called The Marina City complex. The Marina complex is also known as the Corn cob apparently, and looking at it… You can see why. If you're listening in Chicago and are like "what the fuck, nobody calls it that", will remember our mantra.. Don't blame us, blame the internet… Although we did find that reference in a couple spots. The Marina is a mix of residential condos and commercial buildings built between 1961-1968. The complex consists of two 587-foot, 65-story apartment towers, a 10-story office building which is now a hotel, and a saddle-shaped auditorium building originally used as a cinema. When finished, the two towers were both the tallest residential buildings and the tallest reinforced concrete structures in the world. The complex was built as a "city within a city", featuring numerous on-site facilities including a theater, gym, swimming pool, ice rink, bowling alley, stores, restaurants, and, of course, a marina. WLS-TV (ABC Channel 7) transmitted from an antenna atop Marina City until the Willis Tower (formerly known as Sears Tower) was completed. Marina City was the first post-war urban high-rise residential complex in the United States and is widely credited with beginning the residential renaissance of American inner cities. These days the complex is home to the Hotel Chicago, 10pin bowling lounge, and several restaurants including… You fucking guessed it... Dick's Last Resort bitches!!! Oh and also the complex is home to the house of blues. The house of blues was built in the shell of the cinema which was out of use for quite some time. The story is that the hob is haunted by the spirit of a little girl that died due to an illness. There are many reports of weird things happening. The most circulated story seems to be that of a little boy who was playing with some of his toys toys. As he was playing he stepped away for a moment and when he came back he saw a little girl playing with his toys. She asked him if he'd like to play with her. FUCK THAT SHIT!!!! The little boy screamed and the girl vanished. Oddly enough, I did find a comment on one website from a man named Skyler seeming to corroborate this story. The comment reads as follows:              " This can not be… no way… I have performed there 2 times. once was in 2013, and there was a boy in the back playing with his cars. a few minutes after he screamed and started to cry. I was feeling bad,, but this can't be him… also know that in 2015 in march i had another performance and all the lights turned off. This is too creepy."   Was this the same boy that the story is referring too? Who knows. We also found several comments from people staying in what we assume is the hotel Chicago as it's in the complex and pretty much right next to the house of blues. There's comment also claim the hotel is haunted. One of the claims says this:            "It's haunted!!! I saw a middle aged/older woman (dressed in clothing from a period long ago) in my room when I stayed there in 1999/2000. I woke in the early morning to see a woman staring at me. I went through a rational thought process of it being my female business colleague (who stayed in a separate room) and I thought, oh well she can sleep in the other bed (it was a double room & I was in the bed furthest away from the front door) and then quickly snapped out of it and said to myself she has her own room why would she be in my room, I opened my eyes again and that's when I could see it was a woman clearly (w/ angry face) staring at me. I then thought this is a stranger/intruder in my room – I laid there with my eyes just open enough to see – she was there staring at me & she still didn't look happy. I laid there thinking of what to do – I decided I was going to reach and turn the light on and then charge her or run after her when she ran for the door (fortunately, there was a switch right next to the bed). HOWEVER, when I reached for the light and turned it on she was gone. This is what makes this story interesting — I called the front desk and simply asked, ‘had anything significant ever happened at the site of the hotel' (b/c as the person above points out, its not an old or historic looking building (e.g. PreWar). I asked another question that any tourist could have just asked (I don't recall what it was right now). She said immediatley, “No, why did you see a ghost?” My response was, yea, I saw a ghost, I'm in my twenties and not some nut job.” I asked if anyone else had ever reported seeing a ghost and she said, “No.” Anyway, when I met up with my colleague, she could tell I was shaken up and I was pretty pale (like “I had seen a host.”). My story has never changed in all this time. I did stay at the hotel 1 other time after (not in the same room) & didn't see anything – but I slept with the bathroom light on… Scary & Cool experience for sure!"   Sounds spooky!    Next on our list of haunted venues we are heading to Milwaukee! Which is actually pronounced meely waukay, which is Algonquin for the good land. Now the Rave is amazing for several reasons: first it's the location of one of Moody's favorite tour stories which also involves Jon and our friend Brad from Voudoux.  2: it's huge and creepy as shit. 3: the pool... The Rave/Eagles Club is a 180,000 square foot, seven-level, live entertainment complex in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The building contains eight independent clubs with capacities ranging from 400 to 3500. The Eagles Ballroom is the building's showpiece, featuring a 25,000 square feet (2,300 m2) oval wooden dance floor, originally installed when the building was constructed, in addition to a large, old-fashioned domed ceiling and a stage on one side. Originally a ballroom, it has hosted everything from boxing matches to concerts to ethnic dances. The ballroom head hosted huge acts ranging from Bob Dylan to Green day, from the grateful dead to slayer and of course none other than Lil Pump.    Along with the eagles ballroom, the building houses the Rave hall, The eagles hall, the Rave bar, The Rave craft beer lounge, The penthouse lounge, and the eagles club.  Since its construction in 1926, the Eagles Club has known several incarnations. Prominently among them, it housed the Fraternal Order of the Eagles, a notable organization whose considerable impacts on America's cultural landscape remain in effect today.   In 1939, the idea of using the building for music presentations took hold, reinventing its purpose. The grand ballroom became a popular venue for big band music, such as band leaders Guy Lombardo and Glen Miller and their orchestras. Soon, other types of music, theatre and performing arts also offered shows and concerts in the large, elegant ballroom; from 1939 through the mid-sixties. Comedians like Bob Hope and Red Skeleton did stand-up comedy. In 1959, people who bought a $1.50 ticket to the Winter Dance Party, were treated to the music of Buddy Holly and the Crickets, Big Bopper, Dion and the Belmonts, and Richie Valens. This would be the last show for buddy Holly before he died. In 1964, The Eagles Club had its first rock concert, with the Dave Clark Five performing on the ballroom stage. The 1970s brought even more famous groups and people, such as Eric Clapton, Crosby, Stills and Nash and other rising rock stars. When the Athletic Club was closed, a homeless men's shelter opened up temporarily in the basement area, providing shelter for the destitute which is life-saving during the freezing winter months. By the late 1980s, The Eagles Club was in a state of disrepair and The Eagle Club put it out on the real estate market, after getting it listed on The National Register of Historic Places, in 1986.  In late 1992, the Eagles Club was rescued when it was bought by Wauwatosa businessman Anthony J. Balestrieri and his wife, Marjorie, who performed in the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. They began the long process of restoring the historic beauty of the elegant ballroom and interior art, as well as the outside facade. They also restored and renovated other areas turning the building into the multi venue building it is today.    We wanted to include this history because: A. We love the history of places like this and B. It shows how many things this building way used for and how many people have passed through the building. We all know where there tons of history there tends to be ghost stories!    Let's get into the spooky shit! Remember the pool we mentioned earlier… Well at one point a 17 year old boy had a fucking heart attack and died in the pool. Later, at least two more children would die in the pool. This would ultimately cause the closure of the athletic club.  Also the man who ran the homeless shelter was said to be extremely cruel and abusive to the men staying there.    The basement area which is the home of the former men's shelter, is one of the more haunted areas. The shelter manager mentioned earlier is thought to be the reason behind the heavy negative energy felt there. Cold spots are often felt by staff in the late hours after closing. Shadow people have often been reported by staff as well as band members packing up after a show.    Next is the pool area, which we've seen and it's fucking creepy. A little girl is said to roam around the area. People have heard her laughter and have said her presence can bring a sense of dread. Staff have said they have heard shuffling footsteps and have smelled a strong odor of bleach in the pool area.    In the boiler room under the pool, a former employee still hangs and he doesn't like people in his area. "Jack" was once recorded telling a group on a ghost hunt to "get out, get out now" Apparently, you can find a video of this on YouTube, we'll try and find it to post on our page.   The ballroom has had its share of apparitions hanging around during sound checks and after shows when everyone has left. An employee told a story of when he was standing on the floor of The Eagles Ballroom, making sure that the people going to the roof patio didn't “get lost” and go into the Eagles Ballroom by design.  He said that one of his fellow workers had seen what they thought was a man, standing in one of the second floor boxes located above the Eagles Ballroom. He called security and when they approached this person, he ran down the aisle but disappeared before the staff person that was behind him and the security person cutting off his escape could try to grab him.    One other common theme is people hearing either happy laughing children or sad crying children. Some staff have stated they've seen entities of children playing in groups.    We've been here.. This place is awesome. Also another fun tidbit… not to far away from the Rave is the ambassador hotel. Which of you're up on your serial killers, you know is the place where Jeffrey Dahmer killed his first victim in Milwaukee. Steven Tuomi was Jeffrey Dahmer's first victim in Milwaukee. Dahmer met Tuomi in September of 1987. At the time, Dahmer was out on probation after molestation charges of a minor. The two men spent the night together drinking heavily and visiting multiple bars. Later that night, they ended up in a room together in the Ambassador, room 507, which is a room some Dahmer historians have requested to stay in. Dahmer killed Toumi while he was in a drunken stupor. Upon waking up to find Tuomi dead, Dahmer put the body in a suitcase and took it to his grandmother's house where he was living. In the basement, he acted out necrophiliac desires and then dismembered the body. Supposedly when Dahmer awoke to find Tuomi dead, the body was in an awkward position hanging off the side of the bed. Some visitors have reported instances of waking up to discover their partner in a similarly awkward position.   Visitors to room 507 have reported a variety of experiences, such as a heaviness to the room that they can't quite explain. Some people get woken up in the middle of the night by odd circumstances. There's an extra little bit for ya!!!   Info on the Hauntings and most of the historical facts on the Rave was taken from an excellent article on hauntedhouses.com   Next up we're gonna head across the pond, so to speak. We're heading to London and the famous Royal Albert Hall! This place has a long and rich history behind it. The Royal Albert Hall was built on what was once the Gore estate, at the centre of which stood Gore House. The three acre estate was occupied by political reformer William Wilberforce between 1808-1828 and subsequently occupied between 1836-1849 by the Countess of Blessington and Count D'Orsay.   After the couple left for Paris in May 1851, the house was opened as the ‘Universal Symposium of All Nations', a restaurant run by the first celebrity chef, Alexis Soyer, who planned to cater for the Great Exhibition in Hyde Park.   After the exhibition and following the advice of Prince Albert, Gore House and its grounds were bought by the Exhibition's Royal Commission to create the cultural quarter known as Albertopolis. A complex of public Victorian buildings were developed to house exhibits from the Great Exhibition and to further the study of art, science and industry. On May 20, 1867 7,000 people gathered under a purpose-built marquee to watch Queen Victoria lay the Hall's red Aberdeen granite foundation stone, which today can be found underneath K stalls, row 11, seat 87 in the main auditorium. The Queen announced that “It is my wish that this Hall should bear his name to whom it will have owed its existence and be called The Royal Albert Hall of Arts and Sciences”, as a 21 gun salute was heard from Hyde Park and a trumpet fanfare from HM Life Guards sounded. By December 1870 construction of the Hall had moved on so much that HM Queen Victoria and her daughter Princess Beatrice visited the Hall to listen to the acoustics.   Almost three months later, on 25 February 1871, the Hall's first concert was held to an audience for 7,000 people comprising the workmen and their families, various officials and the invited public. Amateur orchestra, The Wandering Minstrels, played to test the acoustics from all areas of the auditorium.    This place has been running as a venue for 150 years! Again… History breeds ghosts and Hauntings! There's so much history in this building that we are not going to be able to include but please check out the official website for the royal Albert Hall to really drive into the history of this place. You won't be sorry you did. We gave you the beginnings to show how long this place has been around. We're gonna get right into the spooky shit though!    On 13 July 1930 the Spiritualist Association rented the Royal Albert Hall for a seance for Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, following the death of the Sherlock author on 7 July.   Conan Doyle was a spiritualist and believed in the existence beyond the grave. Upon his death 10,000 people gathered expectantly in the Hall to watch a medium take to the stage, hoping to witness some supernatural activity and hear a message from Conan Doyle from the other side…          Lady Doyle: “Although I have not spoken to Arthur since he passed, I am certain that in his own time and his own way he will send a message to us” Time Magazine, 21 July 1930   Lady Conan Doyle took to the stage alongside members of his family, with a vacant chair on her right reserved for her late husband.Time Magazine, who attended the seance, reports:   ‘Mrs. Estelle Roberts, clairvoyant, took the stage. She declared five spirits were “pushing” her. She cried out their messages. Persons in the audience confirmed their validity. Suddenly Mrs. Roberts looked at Sir Arthur's empty chair, cried: “He is here.” Lady Doyle stood up. The clairvoyant's eyes moved as though accompanying a person who was approaching her. “He is wearing evening clothes,” she murmured. She inclined her head to listen. A silent moment. Her head jerked up. She stared at Lady Doyle, shivered, ran to the widow, whispered. Persons nearby could hear: “Sir Arthur told me that one of you went into the hut [on the Doyle estate] this morning. Is that correct?” Lady Doyle, faltering: “Why, yes.” She beamed. Her eyes opened widely. The clairvoyant to Lady Doyle: “The message is this. Tell Mary [eldest daughter]…' Time Magazine, 21 July 1930   At this the audience rose in a clamor, and the great organ of the Hall began to peal, the noise drowning out the answer of Mrs Roberts.   But what was the message delivered to Lady Doyle that night? Did the ghost of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle really visit the Royal Albert Hall on that night in 1930?   Seances are always fun and definitely work as we found out...yea...right….   Here's some more stories taken straight from the RAH website!   THE GIRLS Beneath the Door 6 foyer, in the carpeted basement area, there is one spot where two young women, known as ‘the girls', briefly appear each  November 2nd a little before 2am, when the building is almost deserted, except for some security staff.   Over the years, several staff members reported hearing ‘the girls' laughing, and seeing their animated and excited silhouettes appear, clothed in the fashion of slightly risqué Victorian ladies (extravagant long dark dresses embellished with lace from neck to bodice, with many ruffles, especially around the sleeves and hem, and their hair styled in cottage-loaf buns with ringlets hanging over their ears). The Duty Security Incident Book indicates that there had been appearances by ‘the girls' for the three years prior to 1991. They have been seen passing across the foyer space, which is bounded by double doors at each end, leading on one side to the staff canteen (where we still eat today) and on the other to the kitchen corridor, and then disappear. That is why some believe that ‘the girls' may be responsible for unexplained accidents, tappings and footsteps that occur behind locked doors late at night in the kitchens. Assistants Chefs, who have to clean the kitchen every night after use, often used to hear noises and have been frightened whilst in that area.    FATHER WILLIS Whenever restoration work is carried out on our organ, its original constructor Henry Willis, fondly nicknamed ‘Father Willis', returns as a stooped ghost wearing a black skull cap. When the organ was being reconstructed in 1924, workmen saw a little old man walk down the stairs late one afternoon. On returning to their workshop and relating the facts, their foreman asked what the man was wearing. When told that he was donning a black skull cap, the foreman decided it was the ghost of Father Willis, the original builder of the organ, long since dead, who would not approve of the alterations being undertaken. Since then there have been many reports of a sudden cold atmosphere in the area behind the organ.   When interviewed in 2018, Michael Broadway, the Hall's organ custodian was asked if he had ever seen signs of the legendary ghost of Henry Willis. He answered: “I remember the organ builder Clifford Hyatt telling me about this over forty years ago. The tuner […] was making the final visit of the Willis contract before the Harrison & Harrison rebuild in the 1920s. When he got up on to the Great passage board he saw Father Willis there saying ‘They shan't take my organ from me'. A lovely story, but I haven't seen him. There are many questions I would ask him and hopefully have his approval of the way I look after this instrument. Perhaps he has no reason to be disturbed.”    THE MAN IN WHITE During a Jasper Carrott comedy event in May 1990, the Duty Manager was ordered to clear the Middle Choir seats and to post a Steward at either end to avoid anyone entering as it is very distracting for a performer to have people walking across the back of the stage during the show. That's why a very angry Stage Manager demanded on radio to know why there was someone crossing the stage. The description was of a man dressed in white, walking oddly as if on drugs. The Stewards insisted no one had passed them and on further investigation no one except Jasper Carrott was onstage, but several people had seen the figure cross the stage from left to right.   THE VICTORIAN COUPLE A staff member during the 2000s reported having seen a couple in Victorian clothing walk across the second tier near to Door Six and vanish into a box. As a venue whose history is so closely tied to the Victorian times, this didn't seem particularly odd (people dress up sometimes…)   But in 2011, a Head Steward was finishing off his shift one evening and had made sure that all members of the public had left the second tier. On going downstairs into the auditorium, he noticed a couple sitting in the box so he returned to the second tier but found no one in the box. He assumed they had left while he was on his way back, so once again he returned to the auditorium… Only to see them again. So he went back to the second tier, and that's when he heard the couple chattering. He assumed they were in the box but on opening the door, there was no one there.   There are several more accounts on their website and tons and tons of stories all over the web about experiences at the historical venue. It sounds like it's one crazy place!!!   We've got a couple more for you guys.                Next up is another club we've been too, the Masquerade in Atlanta. The Masquerade features three indoor venues with capacities ranging from 300 to 1000, appropriately named Heaven, Hell and Purgatory.  The Masquerade was founded in 1988 at the historic DuPre Excelsior Mill, a former excelsior mill at 695 North Avenue in the Old Fourth Ward neighborhood. The venue had both indoor and outdoor concert space. It was sold in 2006 and moved in late November 2016 after it was made part of a new mixed-use development called North + Line. The building was designated as historic by the city and all of the original parts will be saved through adaptive reuse. The masquerade had hosted tons of national and local acts from cannibal corpse to the greatest entertainer in history, Weird Al Yankovic.     This night club is said to be visited by the spirits who died in fire and tuberculosis outbreaks long ago, both of which killed several members of the building's former staff. Apparitions have been seen and unexplained footsteps have been reported. One popular story is that of a large and tall black man who is always seen walking around the nightclub. The staff believes that it is this man who turns the musical amplifiers every night.   The staff has also reported hearing footsteps from unidentified sources, as well as cold spots all throughout the building. Horrifying screams can also be heard coming from the back of the stairs even when there is no one there. They believe that the screams come from the young woman who died in a freakish accident in the nightclub. Nowadays, there are rumors that real vampires come to the nightclub and even live there.  Some people believe that this rumor has been spread to promote business as vampires have suddenly become very popular.   Next up were heading to Nashville and a place the Moody had been to, but not for music, for the national beard and mustache competition. He did not place unfortunately. The auditorium opened as the Union Gospel Tabernacle in 1892. Its construction was spearheaded by Thomas Ryman, a Nashville businessman who owned several saloons and a fleet of riverboats. When Ryman died in 1904, his memorial service was held at the tabernacle. During the service, it was proposed the building be renamed Ryman Auditorium, which was met with the overwhelming approval of the attendees. The building was originally designed to contain a balcony, but a lack of funds delayed its completion. The balcony was eventually built and opened in time for the 1897 gathering of the United Confederate Veterans, with funds provided by members of the group. As a result, the balcony was once called the Confederate Gallery.[5] Upon the completion of the balcony, the Ryman's capacity rose to 6,000. A stage was added in 1901 that reduced the capacity to just over 3,000. Though the building was designed to be a house of worship – a purpose it continued to serve throughout most of its early existence – it was often leased to promoters for nonreligious events in an effort to pay off its debts and remain open. In 1904, Lula C. Naff, a widow and mother who was working as a stenographer, began to book and promote speaking engagements, concerts, boxing matches, and other attractions at the Ryman in her free time.  Naff gained a reputation for battling local censorship groups, who had threatened to ban various performances deemed too risqué. In 1939, Naff won a landmark lawsuit against the Nashville Board of Censors, which was planning to arrest the star of the play Tobacco Road due to its provocative nature. The court declared the law creating the censors to be invalid W.C. Fields, Will Rogers in 1925, Charlie Chaplin, Bob Hope with Doris Day in '49, Harry Houdini in '24, and John Philip Sousa (among others) performed at the venue over the years, earning the Ryman the nickname, "The Carnegie Hall of the South". The Ryman in its early years also hosted Marian Anderson in 1932, Bill Monroe (from KY) and the Bluegrass Boys in '45, Little Jimmy Dickens in '48, Hank Williams in '49, The Carter Sisters with Mother Maybelle Carter in 1950, Elvis in '54, Johnny Cash in '56, trumpeter Louis Armstrong in '57, Patsy Cline in '60, Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs (bluegrass) in '64, and Minnie Pearl in '64. The Grand Ole Opry was first broadcast from the Ryman on June 5, 1943, and originated there every week for nearly 31 years thereafter. Every show sold out, and hundreds of fans were often turned away. During its tenure at Ryman Auditorium, the Opry hosted the biggest country music stars of the day and became a show known around the world. Melding its then-current usage with the building's origins as a house of worship, the Ryman got the nickname "The Mother Church of Country Music", which it still holds to this day. The last Opry show at the Ryman occurred the previous evening, on Friday, March 15. The final shows downtown were emotional. Sarah Cannon, performing as Minnie Pearl, broke character and cried on stage. When the plans for Opryland USA were announced, WSM president Irving Waugh also revealed the company's intent to demolish the Ryman and use its materials to construct a chapel called "The Little Church of Opryland" at the amusement park. Waugh brought in a consultant to evaluate the building, noted theatrical producer Jo Mielziner, who had staged a production at the Ryman in 1935. He concluded that the Ryman was "full of bad workmanship and contains nothing of value as a theater worth restoring." Mielziner suggested the auditorium be razed and replaced with a modern theater. Waugh's plans were met with resounding resistance from the public, including many influential musicians of the time. Members of historic preservation groups argued that WSM, Inc. (and Acuff, by proxy) exaggerated the Ryman's poor condition, saying the company was worried that attachment to the old building would hurt business at the new Opry House. Preservationists leaned on the building's religious history and gained traction for their case as a result. The outcry led to the building being added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971. Following the departure of the Opry, the Ryman sat mostly vacant and deteriorating for nearly 20 years, as the neighborhood surrounding it continued to see the increasing effects of urban decay.  In 1986, as part of the Grand Ole Opry 60th-anniversary celebration, CBS aired a special program that featured some of the Opry's legendary stars performing at the Ryman. While the auditorium was dormant, major motion pictures continued to be filmed on location there, including John Carpenter's Elvis (1979), Coal Miner's Daughter (1980 – Loretta Lynn Oscar-winning biopic), Sweet Dreams (1985 – story of Patsy Cline), and Clint Eastwood's Honkytonk Man (1982). A 1979 television special, Dolly & Carol in Nashville, included a segment featuring Dolly Parton performing a gospel medley on the Ryman stage. In 1989, Gaylord Entertainment began work to beautify the Ryman's exterior. The structure of the building was also improved, as the company installed a new roof, replaced broken windows, and repaired broken bricks and wood. In October 1992, executives of Gaylord Entertainment announced plans to renovate the entire building and expand it to create modern amenities for performers and audiences alike, as part of a larger initiative to invest in the city's efforts to revitalize the downtown area. The first performance at the newly renovated Ryman was a broadcast of Garrison Keillor's A Prairie Home Companion on June 4, 1994. Beginning in November 1999, the Opry was held at Ryman Auditorium for three months, mostly due to the success of the January shows, but partly due to the ongoing construction of Opry Mills shopping mall next door to the Grand Ole Opry House. The Opry has returned to the Ryman for all of its November, December, and January shows every year since then, allowing the production to acknowledge its roots while also taking advantage of a smaller venue during the off-peak season for tourism and freeing the Grand Ole Opry House for special holiday presentations. The Ryman has also served as a gathering place for the memorial services of many prominent country music figures. Tammy Wynette, Chet Atkins, Skeeter Davis, Harlan Howard, Bill Monroe, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, Billy Block, George Hamilton IV, Earl Scruggs, and Jim Ed Brown have all been memorialized from the Ryman stage. In 2018, the Ryman was named the most iconic structure in Tennessee by Architectural Digest. And just because….On June 9, 2019, Wu-Tang Clan performed the first pure rap concert ever at the Ryman. The concert was sold out.   Again, we like to give history on these places for context and honestly it's just interesting to us so whatever. But this again illustrates the point that many crazy things happened here over the years as many many people have passed through this auditorium… Including Moody.   Ok, so let's get to the ghosts and spooky shit. Ryman's spirit was fine with most performances but would rise if the people onstage were getting a bit risqué. Apparently, he disrupted shows by stomping around the room so loudly that spectators were forced to leave. Famously, the ghost wreaked havoc while the opera Carmen was taking place. Probably because it tells the story of a gypsy temptress.    During the grand ole Opry period, rumors surfaced that the venue was cursed since apparently, most singers that performed there wound up dead. A total of 37 people met their fate in the most gruesome ways, dying from O.D.s, car accidents, fires, or slaughterings. Among the artists believed to have succumbed to the curse are: Stringbean Akeman, Patsy Cline, Texas Ruby, and many more. In a blog post by Virginia Lamkin titled Haunted Ryman Auditorium, the author explains that when the show relocated to the Opryland USA theme park, 14 additional acts died. It is believed that the curse followed because a large portion of the Ryman Auditorium stage was cut out and brought to the new location.   The spirit often referred to as “The Grey Man,” is believed to have been one of the Confederate soldiers who frequented the auditorium during post-war gatherings. Some say they've witnessed him sitting in the balcony while artists rehearse. He watches the stage steadily but disappears as soon as anyone gets too close.   ”The lady,” on the other hand, isn't a spectator; she's a performer. Believed to be the ghost of Patsy Cline, she has been heard singing by staff. Usually, her performance happens late at night as they prepare to close. Patsy Cline, who died tragically in a plane crash, has also been linked to the Opry Curse. Could the curse not only kill but also trap artists in the venue?   Speaking of Opry Curse victims, Hank Williams is said to have been another casualty. The successful singer/songwriter passed away in 1953, after mixing prescription drugs with alcohol. Similar to the other artists haunting the auditorium, Hank's voice has been heard clear as day by employees. They have also heard his songs being played onstage, without explanation. Along with Patsy, Hank Williams' soul has lingered in the old venue ever since he passed.   The info on the history of the ryman comes mostly from their own website while the stories of the hauntings we found on the website ghostcitytours.com   Next up is the Phoenix theater in Petaluma California. The club has been in existence since 1905 and has changed in both structure and purpose, mostly due to severe damage caused by several fires. Petaluma's Phoenix Theater has been entertaining Sonoma County residents for over 116 years. Hosting everyone from the likes of Harry Houdini to Green Day, the fabled teen center and music venue has a varied and interesting history.   The entertainment center opened in 1904 as the Hill Opera House. The structure was designed by San Francisco architect Charles Havens, who also designed Petaluma's Carlson-Currier Silk Mill in 1892. The Beaux Arts-style theater hosted operas, theatrical performances, high school graduations and music for over 15 years until the early 1920s when it was gutted by fire.   In 1925, the venue reopened as the California Theatre playing silent films accompanied by music. A Jan. 24, 1925, Press Democrat article proclaimed the showplace the “largest playhouse in Petaluma and one of the finest theaters of Northern California.” A packed house attended the opening night performance which include a double feature picture show and live entertainment.   The theater switched to movies with sound in later years and lost major sections of its roof to a second fire in 1957. Petaluma's Tocchini family bought the floundering venue in 1967 switching to a program of live music and entertainment.   In 1983, the theater was renamed the Phoenix - reflecting its ability to be reborn from the ashes. Tom Gaffey, a young man who had grown up in Petaluma and worked at both the California and the Showcase theaters, was hired as manager, a position he holds to this day. The theater gained unwanted attention after a late-night performance by the band Popsicle Love Sponge performed a questionable act with the body of what was believed to be a dead chicken. The late-night shows ended, but the movies continued for a short time.   Today the venue serves as a graffiti-covered teen center and venue for rock, punk, reggae and more. In 1996, it hosted the last show of the Long Beach ska band Sublime as well as rock and punk legends the Ramones, Red Hot Chili Peppers, X, Metallica and Primus. The guiding principle of the Phoenix has always been that it's "everyone's building" and this was formalized in the early 2000's when the Phoenix became a 501(c)3 nonprofit  community center.   This place sounds pretty awesome. This following except it's taken directly from their website :               The Phoenix Theater is open seven days a week, generally from 3pm to 7pm, for drop-in “unstructured” use. Our building interior is large and soulful, with several rooms to accommodate a variety of activities. On a typical afternoon, you'll find kids playing acoustic music (we've got two pianos and a big stage), skateboarding (across the large wooden floor and up one of four quarter-pipe ramps), doing homework in the tutoring room, or sitting in one of the overstuffed sofas: reading, talking with friends, or napping. There's always a staff member onsite, but the atmosphere is casual.    On top of this they have free music programs from lessons to recording to production to podcasting to band management and everything in between. Also they have many programs for teens in the art community to hone their skills. Not only that they have a teen health center to help inform teens and help them make better, more  conscientious choices regarding their personal health. They also have services for  transitive health and STD help as well. We feel like every town needs a place like this. Especially if it's haunted!!! Speaking of which we found an interview that Gaffney did where he talks about some of his experiences and other things that have happened. The following was taken from petaluma360.com:   Gaffey began by talking about his earliest days. “It was my job to close the theater down. By 10:15 it would just be me, and whatever people were watching the movie. Near the end, I'd go up to the projection booth. After the audience exited, I'd turn off the projector, come down onto the stage where the sound equipment was, turn off the amps, check doors, balcony, bathrooms, lock the doors, hit the security alarm, then go out the door by the box office.”   On three separate nights, as he was leaving, the box office phone rang.   Gaffey explained the building had five phone stations. The light on the box office phone indicated the call was from the projection booth.   “I'd have to turn off the alarm and pick up the phone. ‘Hello? Hello? Hello?' But there was nobody there.   “You can't believe in ghosts when you're shutting down a theater. You have to check.   “Three times I mustered my courage, turned the lights back on and burst into the projection booth. There was no one there.   “That was my first experience, when I was an unknown here, a spooky ‘welcome back.'”   Gaffey is quick to temper his conversation with “it could have been” and “maybe someone playing pranks.” He keeps an open mind. Ghosts or explainable experiences: it's for the individual to decide.   “Blue lights have been seen floating through the building. There's the Little Kid: he'd been seen even when I was a kid working down here. And one night, sleeping on stage as a teen, I could hear and feel big footsteps. I never felt afraid.   “The big guy has been felt by many over the years,” Gaffey said. “We named him Chris. Big Chris. He's the only ghost - if there are ghosts here - who's not from a show business background.” He added that psychics who've visited the theater have talked about Chris dating to the livery stable-era and that someone was murdered on this spot, possibly with a knife.   But Gaffey continued firmly, “My experiences in this building have been warm and protective. “Chris had the spirit of the Phoenix before it became what it is. Chris may have loved this spot. I think it's one of the coolest corners in town.” He commented he sensed from the warmth he felt as he was talking that Chris was on stage, observing.   Then there's the Little Kid - a boy. “That's an interesting one,” Gaffey said. “Again - a psychic had come in. First off, he talked about the guy in the attic [the projection booth], said he seemed to be older, white hair and faded green, almost khaki, clothing; tall, thin with angular knees and elbows.   The older man, the psychic told Gaffey, is trying to make good on something wrong he felt he did to a child. The psychic added the old man hadn't, however, done anything.   “I'm wondering,” Gaffey said, “if it's the little boy. This was the fly area” - the area to the rear of the stage where backdrops hung. “With stuff hanging here and ladder work, maybe the kid was injured. He's been seen by many. He's got shaggy hair, maybe less than five feet, wearing shorts or knickers, a wool suit and a cap, from the 1920s.”   In the 1990s, a security guard for the thrash metal band GWAR got down off a ladder and asked, “Who's that little kid back there in the exit?” When no one could find the boy, the guard quit.    There is much more to the interview and we would definitely recommend checking it out! We've got one one more venue for you guys even though there are a bunch more out there. Some of the more well known and covered places like Bobby Mackey's in Kentucky, The Avalon in Hollywood, Le Petit Théâtre du Vieux Carre in New Orleans, The rapids theater in Niagara falls NY among others we've left off but will definitely be back to cover at a future point as the history and Hauntings in these places is awesome.    So that brings us to our home town of Cleveland Ohio and to the World famous Agora Theater. Now this a place where we've both spent many nights jamming out to some great fucking shows. And yes.. Whether you like it or not… Here comes some history fuckers.    The first Agora in Cleveland, informally referred to as Agora Alpha, opened on February 26, 1966, at 2175 Cornell Road in Little Italy near the campus of Case Western Reserve University. In 1967, the Agora moved to a second building on East 24th Street near the campus of Cleveland State University. Once settled in their new location, the new Agora Ballroom, informally referred to as Agora Beta, played a role in giving exposure to many bands, both from the Cleveland area and abroad. Many artists such as Peter Frampton, Bruce Springsteen, Boston, Grand Funk Railroad, ZZ Top, Kiss and many others received much exposure after playing the Agora.[3] The Agora Ballroom was also the setting of the concert by Paul Simon's character in the opening minutes of the 1980 movie One-Trick Pony. The front facade of the Agora Ballroom was temporarily swapped for the one shown in the movie. It is also one of three locations used to record Todd Rundgren's live album Back to the Bars in 1978.   The East 24th Street building also housed Agency Recording Studios, located above the Agora. The onsite recording studio and the close proximity to radio station WMMS allowed for high-quality live concert broadcasts from the Agora. Some of these concerts were later released commercially, including Bruce Springsteen's “The Agora, Cleveland 1978”, the Cars' “Live at the Agora 1978”, Ian Hunter's “You're Never Alone with a Schizophrenic, Deluxe Edition” and Dwight Twilley Band's “Live From Agora”.   The popularity of the club led the Agora to expand during the 1970s and 1980s, opening 12 other clubs in the cities of Columbus, Toledo, Youngstown, Painesville, Akron, Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Tampa, Hallandale, Hartford, and New Haven. However, the Cleveland location is the only one still in existence today.   In 1984, the Agora was damaged by a fire and closed.   The building currently known as the Agora first opened on March 31, 1913, with an English performance of Aida as the Metropolitan Theatre. It was the brainchild of Max Faetkenheuer, an opera promoter and conductor who had also been involved in the construction of the monumental Hippodrome Theatre on Euclid Avenue five years earlier. The new opera house was well received and did well early on, but later struggled to stay profitable. Among various uses, the Metropolitan was home to a Cleveland's Yiddish theatre troupe in 1927. This brief episode in its history came to an end a few months later in 1928 after the troupe was involved in a bus accident on the way to a performance in Youngstown; the actors were too injured to perform and the venture went bankrupt. By 1932, the venue had turned into a vaudeville/burlesque house called "The Gayety," hosting "hoofers, comics and strippers." The Metropolitan returned to its original use for a short time during the mid-1940s staging comedic musicals, but by the end of the decade stage productions had ceased and the theatre became a full-time movie house. From 1951–78, the theater offices were home to radio stations WHK (1420 AM) and WMMS (100.7 FM); the theater itself was known as the WHK Auditorium. In 1968–69 the theater was known as the Cleveland Grande. In the early 1980s, it briefly re-opened as the New Hippodrome Theatre showing movies. Following the fire which damaged the Agora Ballroom on East 24th Street, club owner Henry LoConti, Sr. decided to move to the 5000 Euclid Avenue location. Following extensive renovations, the new Agora Metropolitan Theater, the third Cleveland venue to bear the Agora name, opened in October 1986. The Agora has two rooms: a 500-person capacity, standing-room-only ballroom with adjoining bar, and an 1800-seat theater.   As far as some spooky shit goes, we were able to get some info straight from the source! We spoke with Mike who works at the agora and we got some cool stuff from him. In an email mine related the following information.            "Prior to our merger with AEG Presents, I used to lead our ‘Ghost Tours' with a group called Black Sheep Paranormal.   While I didn't know what to expect, and I wasn't exactly familiar with paranormal investigations, that quickly changed working with the group.             One of the members of the Black Sheep Paranormal group was a retired police officer. Pretty easy to say he's seen some shit, and could be characterized as fearless. Another member told him to check out the men's room, where we have a utility closest between our sinks and stalls. From past experiences, we usually get some decent activity from that closest. However, nothing occurred this time. After giving up on this spot, the team member decided to use the bathroom. Seconds later, he hears **CLAP, CLAP, CLAP** from behind his neck, and he exited the bathroom about as white as a ghost.   Oh man… Good thing he was in the bathroom in case he pissed himself!! This next story is pretty crazy. He talks about "The Cleaning Lady"!             "One of the known spirits at The Agora, who we call “The Cleaning Lady,” as you could have guessed, was responsible for cleaning the venue many decades ago. While I'm not exactly sure what happened to her, she was said to have fallen off our balcony, and died. One night, during an investigation, we were sitting in silence at the top of our balcony on the left hand side. As we sat there, we started to hear sweeping sounds. As the broom sweeps started to happen for a few seconds, all of the sudden, the sound traveled from the left side of the venue, all the way to the right side of the venue. We couldn't really explain it, but that's exactly what happened."   Wow! That's awesome! This next one would probably freak a lot of people out… but it's definitely cool.           "Another occurrence was when we were up in one of the suite boxes up in the balcony. The venue was blacked out, and from where we were sitting, you could still see the bar area in our lower level. The bar had a mini fridge up against the wall that had lighting in it. We draped it off with a black table cloth, but there was still exposed light coming from the fridge. As we're sitting there, we see a shadow fading in, and fading out of the light. Almost as if a person was pacing back and forth. We were able to see this because of the light from the fridge. As this shadow figure is pacing back and forth for a good 30 – 60 seconds, one of our team members calls out “if anyone is over by the bar, please make a sound.” And I shit you not, with no hesitation, a stack of plastic cups falls off the bar and onto the ground. That was definitely one of my favorite experiences."   Hopefully we get some action like that on our ghost hunt! Mike goes on to say that he actually got to see an apparition as well!       "Over the years, we've heard and seen many things. We've had items that turn up missing, seen plenty of white anomalies, and other occurrences. Apparitions are rare, but sounds are usually constant. We've heard bangs on our doors, we've heard voices, we've even heard music; big band music to be specific. The apparition I've seen was an unreal experience. We were sitting in the balcony, and we just saw this shadow figure in one of the seats across/behind us. The figure was perfectly human-shaped, but you could see through it. It definitely seemed like it was staring at us the whole time. Sadly, my story telling doesn't do this moment very much justice.   He said that a lot of the investigation stuff was mainly communication based with the spirits. He said they would ask  questions and they frequently got answers. We asked about how the spirits would answer and he told us:             "Most of the time in our investigations, we used dowsing rods for the questions, and asked them to cross the rods in a ‘yes or no' type of questioning. They were always responsive in this form. As long as we got it started, we usually were able to keep the questions going. Obviously, noises would happen all the time. I remember one evening just working (no event going on), but we use to have these ‘garage' type doors for our balcony entry. And for whatever reason, the spirts would not stop banging on them. Like something out of a movie, non-stop banging. That was the same day where my coworker went to use the bathroom, and as she was coming back to the office she heard “There she goes…” in a whisper type voice.   Damn! That's some crazy shit! We would like to thank Mike for his time and this incredible stories of the strange stuff that occurs at the agora! From Edwin Drake's 1859 discovery of oil in Pennsylvania to our 21st century entanglements in the Middle East, oil's influence on America is vast. Religion's role in this American oil story is outsized, and relatively unknown, and understanding it will help us more fully comprehend what religion has done to America, and what America has done to religion—which is understanding America itself. We trust that at the conclusion of this podcast, listeners will have a deeper appreciation of religious freedom as a governing principle in the United States and will see to its protection as an indispensable part of the fragile American experiment in self-government. Today we have with us Darren Dochuk, the Andrew V. Tackes College Professor of History at The University of Notre Dame, and author of Anointed With Oil: How Christianity and Crude Made Modern America. Mr. Dochuk's primary research interest is 20th century United States, with an emphasis on the intersections of religion, politics, and the rising influence of the American west and Sunbelt Southwest in national life. He is the author, editor and co-editor of many books, including From Bible Belt to Sunbelt: Plain-Folk Religion, Grassroots Politics, and the Rise of Evangelical Conservatism, God's Businessmen: Entrepreneurial Evangelicals in Depression and War, and Faith in the New Millennium: The Future of Religion and American Politics. Jeb and Blake discuss the ISO episode: Hurricanes.  The episode touches on some emotional memories for Jeb, who was directly impacted by Hurricane Katrina, the storm that devastated New Orleans in 2005. (Watch the ISO episode on YouTube.) (From NOAA - the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration)  A tropical cyclone is a rotating low-pressure weather system that has organized thunderstorms but no fronts (a boundary separating two air masses of different densities). Tropical cyclones with maximum sustained surface winds of less than 39 miles per hour (mph) are called tropical depressions. Those with maximum sustained winds of 39 mph or higher are called tropical storms. When a storm's maximum sustained winds reach 74 mph, it is called a hurricane. The Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale is a 1 to 5 rating, or category, based on a hurricane's maximum sustained winds. The higher the category, the greater the hurricane's potential for property damage. Tropical cyclones are categorized according to the speed of sustained winds. Tropical Depression - 38 mph or less Tropical Storm - 39 to 73 mph Hurricane Category 1 - 74 to 95 mph Category 2 - 96 to 110 mph Category 3 - 111 to 129 mph Category 4 - 130 to 156 mph Category 5 - 157 or higher mph The Maya god Hurakan. (Wikipedia) This one-legged diety is the axe who opens storms. Much of the ISO episode centers on Hurricane Camille, now considered the second most intense tropical cyclone to hit the United States.  The most intense since the measurement scale began was Hurricane Carla in 1961. This is based on a ranking that combines Intensity and Size, leaving Camile (1969), Opal (1995) and Katrina (2005) all tied for third with a combined score of 36.  Second place went to Betsy (1965).  Jeb shares some photos from Katrina.  The exodus as people flee the coming storm.   Arial footage of floodwater damage in 9th ward: Coverage of the tragedy in the lower 9th ward. Mercenaries after Katrina. Camp Greyhound - post-Katrina Internment Camp, where people were given the option of labor or being stuck on cold concrete. Famous Mike Myers & Kanye fundraiser moment. Trump throwing paper towels in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria.   Back to shots from the Episode: Inside the National Hurrican Center in Florida. You can see they're still mostly in paper mode.  They have computers and advanced tools, but a lot of their work is still paper, feeding in report data and drawing projected paths and force on paper maps. ASCII computer map of the southern US coast. Richelieu Apartments BEFORE the Hurricane Richelieu Apartments AFTER the Hurricane Thankfully the hurricane party itself is a myth, but the tragic loss of lives was real. Prominently featured in the last third of the episode, but not so much in our coverage, is Dr. Neil Frank who was instrumental in making the National Hurricane Center the institution that it is today.     On a more positive note, we did get some 70's beach fashion in our Nimoy Fashion Alert!     Special thanks to Beth Patterson for allowing us to use her song Come Hell or High Water in this episode. Our first full episode! This week we kick things off talking with Scott Norris of Elam's Widow. Scott is a prolific weaver who lives in Mass. Working out of his converted garage, he creates beautiful heirloom fabrics using hand dyed linen. His pieces have evolved over time to a select palette, precise structures, and a luscious, crisp hand. Prominently in the center of it all you can see his primary loom, a 50 inch, 8 harness Norwood. He has customized it with an auxiliary warp beam, which allows for him to have precise control over his tension (which is especially important while working with linen). Not only is his work amazing, but the way he talks about creating textiles is very thoughtful and has a lot of self awareness about how he views himself with his work. We happened to catch Scott while he is at an interesting stage in his career, a shift in creation. The work that he is passionate about and throwing himself into is much different (though very much right in line) with the work he has created in the past. So, we hope you enjoy our chat that we had with Scott about his philosophy, his inspirations and the beautiful work he creates. 7 Sure-Fire Ways to Build Instant Trust for Your Digital Brand

Master Your Story

Have you ever asked yourself why do prospect trust one digital brand and not the other? Have you ever wondered why folks seem to 'feel' your brand is trustworthy but couldn't quite explain? Short answer? Well, it's not that simple. In digital branding, we use combination of behavior and cognitive psychology, market research, creativity, User Experience, User Interface design and a few good strategies to help expedite the 'trust building process'. Why should you care? Because by definition, the faster you can build digital trust, the faster your target prospect (whether recruit, prospect or partner) can truly evaluate what your substance!  1. Leverage Your Client’s Reputation Post the logos or names of your top clients in a prominent portion of your web site or digital storefront. Buyers are more likely to accelerate their purchase decision if they see that larger companies than theirs, or of the same size, have purchased your products or services.  2. Use Recognizable Terminology  Don’t invent new lines of business or product categories that are not widely accepted or pre-tested for your target audience. Uncommon terminology could cause buyers to overlook services being offered and skip to the next available choice with recognizable terms.  3. Logic First, Display Second  Creating a strong resonance through prominent branding is critical, but B2B buyers use logic to filter out advertising noise. Maintain a 60/40 balance between making bold statements on your homepage and arresting design visuals (60%) to gain trust. Craft the navigation and user experience to be both intuitive and easy to follow with clear content that directs the user where they want to go.  4. Be Real. Avoid Skepticism  Place your corporate HQ address on the front of the site. Every so often, users seek to validate your legitimacy and when they only see an email form or an email and a telephone number, they may assume something is fishy.  5. Beef up industry expertise Prominently display recognized industry association membership icons & logos to instantly convey your corporate citizenship in your community of expertise.  6. Leadership Profiles  The leadership page isn’t optional. It is one of the most frequently visited pages with B2B clients. Leadership profiles are a great opportunity to show off your managers, instantly relate credibility and build human trust. Profile shots should be consistent and professional to create a seamless, positive impression.  7. Good SEO Equals More Recognition  Create high-reputation backlinks to your web site. This SEO best practice will establish credibility within Google search algorithms so that your business is on the first search results page. Establishing backlinks to other credible sites such as large businesses, news sites, and trade publications vicariously lends credibility to your own site.  About the Author: Mr. Gal Borenstein is a recognized expert and strategist in digital branding, marketing, social media, advertising, online reputation management and public relations matters. Video: Watch firsthand as investigators from the University of Minnesota used a computer equipped with an eye-tracking device to determine that most consumers pay less attention to Nutrition Facts labels than they report. Further data suggest that average consumers view label components at the top more than those at the bottom and read only the top five lines on a Nutrition Facts label. Prominently positioning key nutrients, and labels themselves, could substantially impact public health. Video provides supplemental content to the article published in the Journal. FCPA Compliance Report

Yesterday I considered an article by Ryan Hubbs, entitled “10 Factors Leading to Reporting Mechanism Distrust”, in which he detailed 10 factors leading to hotline distrust. Today I want to pick up on that article with Hobbs' tips for building a trusted hotline reporting program and culture, talk about the SEC whistle blowing program, and conclude with a few thoughts on why experienced, invested counsel is so critical in these.  Organizations implement and maintain hotlines, trusted programs, hotline programs differently depending on their sizes, cultures, geography, and many other factors if they must decide if they'll construct such programs. Many organizations find benefit to taking it outside from the experience and expertise, the appearance of independence which can increase employee trust. A smaller organization may not be able to do so. Nevertheless, there are many competent companies that put on hotline services for small individuals.  What can you do to help build trust for your reporting system? 1. Training and awareness. Increased awareness of the program will help build employee's confidence around it, and organization should continually strive to help employees know that the hotline reporting system program works, why the organization believes in it, who operates it, and why it's a critical part of the culture of the company and the compliance ethos of the company. Organizations should include hotline frequently asked questions and answers for all employee new hires and supervisory training.            Ongoing communication. Communication about a hotline reporting program, recent compliance issues, and messages from management should be a routine and commonplace. I have talked about putting posters in workrooms and coffee rooms to announce hotlines, but you have to continually communicate it. Think of the example of Louis Sapirman at Dun & Bradstreet, where they are continually communicating via the company's internal social media program about the hotline.            Accessibility. Information on a hotline reporting program and how to report a concern should be within one click of the organization's intranet or external website. An organization should communicate program information in as many languages is as necessary to provide coverage. Certainly here, the Department of Justice and Securities Exchange Commission have made clear in the 2012 guidance that local languages must be respected and utilized. Web-based reporting platforms should be available to facilitate anonymous reporting and allow for inclusion of attachments. Conversely, you may have a situation where a large amount of your workforce does not have access to a computer. They may be in a country where there's limited internet or, frankly, they may not be trained on computers, so you be required to maintain other mechanisms as well.            Transparency. Prominently display your organization's hotline reporting and investigative process including the expertise and contact information of your trained investigators, what employees should expect, plus the organization's responsibilities, cooperate, and protecting against retaliation. We have talked about anti-retaliation before, but I'm going to emphasize it again because it is so important. You must incorporate the fair process doctrine, you must not retaliate, and you must make clear to your employees that you will not tolerate retaliation.            Proficiency and objectivity. Those who manage the hotline and investigation process should be technically proficient, professional, well trained, and experienced in the handling and reporting of concerns. The organization should also install adequate systems, processes, and technologies to support the investigators and ultimately the employees. This includes an in depth and routine training, I would say no less than annually, for the organization's investigative, legal, HR, and compliance staff, but you've got to get the word out. You got to have proficiency and objectivity. Prong three of the 2016 Department of Justice pilot program required compliance expertise. You must have that proficiency and it should include into your investigative staff.            Ongoing assessment. Is your organization assessing your compliance program and your hotline? How do employees currently view the hotline reporting program and corporate culture? Can people get the information to the appropriate disciplines within your organization? Here you can think about Wells Fargo, where there was clear evidence that the culture had failed yet even with a reporting mechanism in place and use of that mechanism, management did not follow up to determine the issues which led to the company’s catastrophic reputational damage.  Next, is an assessment on whether the ethics and hotline policies, procedures, and technology are meeting the needs of the organization and the employees. Here let me emphasize technologies, because I earlier about a situation where an employee does not have access to a computer. What if the employees are out on a drilling rig? Would they have access to a cell phone, or could they report in that manner? Maybe not. They may have to use a computer. You must have the appropriate technology for your diverse workforce.  What about after the report is made? Are your internal investigations and resulting disciplinary actions consistent with the organization's desired culture of compliance? Here you need to make sure that the actions you have taken really are consistent because employees understand this and they will watch and see what happens. Are independent reviews conducted by internal audit or external professionals with ongoing oversight by an audit committee of the hotline and results? Finally, are complaints and resolutions disclosed to or discussed with external auditors? Are you bringing in outside experts to help you?  All of this is important because of Dodd-Frank and its creation of a Whistleblower program for securities violations, such as the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) for issuers. As of April, of 2017, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has made 43 whistle blowers awards of over $153 million to whistle blowers under the Whistleblower program established under Dodd-Frank. This is a direct result of failure of corporate hotlines. Any regulator will tell you that 95% of all employees attempted to report internally first and they were either rebuffed, they were retaliated against, or in some other way rejected. The amount of money, fines and penalties, paid out for ignoring whistle blowers, people who report anonymously, is significant. Finally, as I end this one-month series, I would just like to re-emphasize the need for experienced investigative counsel for serious matters. Recently had a declination issued in the Linde Gas case by the Department of Justice (DOJ), and it really was clear that the counsel used by Linde in in addition to the decision self-disclose, was a critical factor in Linde getting the superior decision it did, which was a declination to prosecute. The investigation was a very difficult set of facts, very convoluted, very muddled up over many countries with shell companies, direct companies, and others. You really must have experienced investigative counsel for things that are outside the routine. Having an experienced, season and competent FCPA bar-lawyer who could both investigate it and negotiate with the government is very critical going forward.  Three Key Takeaways Work to engender employee trust. The SEC Whistleblower program is a huge success and is not going away. Use experienced investigative counsel for hotlines reports of serious wrongdoing. Learn more about your ad choices.
