http://www.attractionchecklist.com -  Prepare for launch!  We are headed to Magic Kingdom to ride Space Mountain on this episode of Attraction Checklist. Attraction audio recorded on June 4, 2024. TRANSCRIPT: Welcome to Attraction Checklist. This episode we visit Magic Kingdom and ride the classic attraction Space Mountain. The Walt Disney World website describes this attraction saying: Blast off on a rip-roaring rocket into the furthest reaches of outer space on this roller-coaster ride in the dark. Guests must be 44” or taller to ride this attraction and the Thrill Level calls it a Thrill Ride with Big Drops in the Dark. Before we head to Starport: Seven Five, here are five fast facts about Magic Kingdom's Space Mountain. 1. Space Mountain opened at Magic Kingdom on January 15, 1975. 2. Space Mountain was originally conceived by Walt Disney for an attraction at Disneyland.  In 1964, Walt Disney started John Hench on the idea of a space themed roller coaster initially called Space Voyage.  It wasn't until 1966 that imagineers christened it Space Mountain for the first time.  The technology at the time made building the attraction in Disneyland impossible, but there was plenty of room at Magic Kingdom so Space Mountain appeared in Walt Disney World promotional materials as early at 1969. 3. There are two tracks on Space Mountain at Walt Disney World, Alpha and Omega.  They are near identical in that they are 65ft (or 19.8m) high, have a drop of 26 feet (7.9m) and whisk you along at 27 mph (or 43.5 km/h).  The difference between the two tracks comes in where track length is concerned.  Alpha track's 3196ft (974.1m) of track is 10 ft (or 3m) longer than Omega's 3186 ft (971.1 m) 4. The first official rider on Space Mountain in 1975 was astronaut Colonel James Irwin. 5. Space Mountain holds the distinction of being the oldest operating roller coaster in all of Florida. Let's ride Space mountain.  After the ride audio I'll give you my thoughts on this attraction.  This is a binaural recording so if you have headphones put them on now as we experience Space Mountain at Magic Kingdom. What I learned from rereading Land's Polaroid: A Company and the Man Who Invented It by Peter C. Wensberg.[0:01] Why is Polaroid a nutty place? To start with, it's run by a man who has more brains than anyone has a right to. He doesn't believe anything until he's discovered it and proved it for himself. Because of that, he never looks at things the way you and I do. He has no small talk. He has no preconceived notions. He starts from the beginning with everything. That's why we have a camera that takes pictures and develops them right away.[1:33] More books on Edwin Land: Insisting on The Impossible: The Life of Edwin Land by Victor McElheny The Instant Image: Edwin Land and the Polaroid Experienceby Mark Olshaker A Triumph of Genius: Edwin Land, Polaroid, and the Kodak Patent War by Ronald Fierstein Instant: The Story of Polaroid by Chris Bonanos [2:18] “Then I read something that one of my heroes, Edwin Land of Polaroid, said about the importance of people who could stand at the intersection of humanities and sciences, and I decided that's what I wanted to do.” —  Steve Jobs: The Exclusive Biography by Walter Isaacson (Founders #214)[5:17] This guy started one of the great technology monopolies and ran it for 50 years.[7:35] He lived his life more intensely than the rest of us.[8:53] His interest in our reactions was minimal — polite, sometimes kind, but limited by the great drain of energy necessary to sustain his own part.[9:30] He never argued his ideas. If people didn't believe in them, he ignored those people. —A Mind at Play: How Claude Shannon Invented the Information Age by Jimmy Soni and Rob Goodman  (Founders #95) Loomis was not someone you could argue with. He would listen patiently to an opposing opinion. But his consideration was nothing more than that-an act of politeness on his part.” — Tuxedo Park: A Wall Street Tycoon and The Secret Palace of Science That Changed The Course of World War II by Jennet Conant (Founders #143)[11:40] Right before he introduces the most important product he ever makes — he is in a fight for his life. There's a good chance that Polaroid is going to be bankrupt.[14:29] The parallel to Steve Jobs is striking. Edwin Land —like jobs — had to turn around the company he founded before they ran out of money![15:02] At 37 he had achieved everything to which he aspired except success.[15:32] Against The Odds: An Autobiography by James Dyson (Founders #200)[22:48] The heroes of your heroes become your heroes.[23:39] Bill Gates would later tell a friend he went to Harvard to learn from people smarter than he was —and left disappointed. —Hard Drive: Bill Gates and the Making of the Microsoft Empire by James Wallace and Jim Erickson (Founders #140)[27:22] The young hurl themselves into vast problems that have troubled the world's best thinkers, believing that they can find a solution. It is well that they should for, from time to time, one of them does. — Autobiography of a Restless Mind: Reflections on the Human Condition Volume 2 by Dee Hock. (Founders #261)[29:30] He concentrated ferociously on his quest.[29:43] We live in the age of infinite distraction.[30:03] My whole life has been spent trying to teach people that intense concentration for hour after hour can bring out in people resources they didn't know they had.[30:29] Among all the components and Land's intellectual arsenal, the chief one seems to be simple concentration. — The Instant Image: Edwin Land and The Polaroid Experience by Mark Olshaker. (Founders #132)[41:50] A Landian question took nothing for granted, accepted no common knowledge, tested the cliche, and treated conventional wisdom as an oxymoron.[42:44] A Triumph of Genius: Edwin Land, Polaroid, and the Kodak Patent War by Ronald Fierstein  (Founders #134)[48:33] They had no alternative but to succeed with the camera. Everyone left at Polaroid knew that at the present rate of decline the business, the company, and their jobs would not survive 1947.[55:45] Smith estimated that throughout the eighties he spent at least four hours a day reading. He found he relied quite heavily on his own vision, backed by assimilating information from many different disciplines all at once. “The common trait of people who supposedly have vision is that they spend a lot of time reading and gathering information, and then synthesize it until they come up with an idea." — Overnight Success: Federal Express and Frederick Smith, Its Renegade Creator by Vance Trimble (Founders #151)[59:05] If you're not good, Jeff will chew you up and spit you out. And if you're good, he will jump on your back and ride you into the ground. — The Everything Store: Jeff Bezos and the Age of Amazon by Brad Stone. (Founders #179) [1:02:24] They were among the first of the park's attractions to be finished, but the pressure of time was already weighing on everyone. One day John Hench stopped by to check the progress on the coaches and had an idea, which he brought to his boss. "Why don't we just leave the leather straps off, Walt? The people are never going to appreciate all the close-up detail."Walt Disney treated Hench to a tart little lecture: "You're being a poor communicator. People are okay, don't you ever forget that. They will respond to it. They will appreciate it."Hench didn't argue. "We put the best darn leather straps on that stagecoach you've ever seen."— Disney's Land: Walt Disney and the Invention of the Amusement Park That Changed the World by Richard Snow. (Founders #158)[1:05:53] There is no such thing as group originality or group creativity or group perspicacity. I do believe wholeheartedly in the individual capacity for greatness. Profundity and originality are attributes of single, if not singular, minds.[1:10:32] There's nothing more refreshing than thinking for a few minutes with your eyes closed.[1:11:00] The present is the past biting into the future.----“I have listened to every episode released and look forward to every episode that comes out. I'm in Disneyland this week. I'm here with my favorite Star Wars nerd (my son, Chase). We've officially experienced the planet Batuu and helped the Resistance in their rise against The First Order. In other words, we have had an amazing time—just as I imagined we would. I thought last week—since this was my planned destination—that I would talk about this one-of-a-kind place and share a few things I have learned. I am NOT a Disney expert or even really an aficionado. I don't own a single pair of ears. I couldn't bring myself to spend the money for a T-shirt, and haven't been here—in Anaheim, CA—for 8 years. But, I do love coming and I love what Disney stands for. Imagineer, John Hench says it this way … “What's our success formula? It's attention to infinite detail, the little things, the minor picky points that others just don't want to take the time, money or effort to do” Disney is in the details. Nearly twelve years ago, my friend (and former business partner), Kayce and I attended The Disney Institute and for three days, we learned all about the history, vision and leadership behind this “most admired company in the world” and the 50+ years of magic that brings people back again and again. Walt and Mortimer! No, wait … it's Mickey, ha! Have a listen as I share a few behind the scenes. then let me hear from you. What are your best Disney memories? What FUN and fascinating facts do you know?Where are my true Disney Addicts? Talk to me!And, speaking of Disney, cue the pixie dust, because I decided that my 2022 word of the year is IMAGINE. I'm super excited to explore and then better practice my personal imagining. And, how serendipitous that I've been walking around for two full days—some 26,000 steps—in the still unfolding details of what Walt imagined and began all those years ago. ““Laughter is timeless, imagination has no age, and dreams are forever.”” — Walt Disney It's easy to imagine details we know will be noticed, but as I think about my family, my home and my work, I want to also imagine the kind of details that will make a difference in less obvious ways … A magical scene. A magical clean! “Give the people everything you can give them. Keep the place as clean as you can!” — Walt Disney

Walt Disney's Enchanted Tiki Room opened at Disneyland in 1963, followed by Walt Disney World in 1971 (although it was named Tropical Serenade for over 25 years). Created by Walt Disney and a team of Imagineers (Rolly Crump, Harriet Burns, and John Hench to name a few), the Tiki Room was the first attraction at Disney to feature audio animatronics. While the show has seen some changes over the years, most dramatically at Tokyo Disney, the current version is almost identical to its original form at Disneyland and Walt Disney World. In this episode, we'll discuss the rich history of Walt Disney's Enchanted Tiki Room, along with some fun facts and details you might not have heard before. The discussion also includes some related history about the famous Dole Whip and Citrus Swirl snacks at the Disney Parks. Thanks to Disney Archeologist Scott Wolf (mastermind behind Mouse Clubhouse), this episode also includes never-before-heard audio interviews with two Imagineers who worked on this attraction. This week's episode is an in-depth look at the development and legacy of one of the most magical theme park attractions in history; Space Mountain.

Welcome to the final bi-weekly episode of "Dreamfinders." With this episode, the podcast has interviewed 50 guests. It's been quiet a ride and the fun is not over just yet! Rick Harper’s work for Disney has certainly left an…Impression. Starting in the model shop at WED, Rick soon moved his way up into the design department and then later was asked to helm the now classic EPCOT French Pavilion film “Impressions de France.” Rick was kind enough to chat with host Nathan Hartman about assisting Claude Coats with Space Mountain, how he and John Hench would get in trouble during board meetings, and that time he hung over the side of the Eiffel Tower’s elevator as it made its way to the top. A message from Nathan: "You know, it’s not as fun to go to theme parks by yourself and the same can be said about theme park podcasts. I’m so glad you’ve joined me on this journey. News: The State of California Health and Human Services hosted an update on COVID-19 in California stream on Tuesday afternoon to talk about theme park reopening guidelines. This was not good news. In a nutshell, small theme parks, which is categorized as being under 15,000 guest capacity can reopen at tier-3, or orange level at 25% capacity or 500 guests, whichever is lower, with only outdoor attractions, and ticket sales limited to the same county the park is located in. – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8QJF0uEDO8 For larger theme parks, they can reopen at tier-4, or yellow level with 25% capacity. Both levels of theme parks must utilize a reservation system for obtaining tickets and must screen guests for symptoms in advance. Face coverings are mandatory throughout the parks, unless eating or drinking. – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8QJF0uEDO8 Disneyland’s President Ken Potrock went to Twitter to post his reaction to the guidelines, in part “Together with our labor unions we want to get people back to work, but these State guidelines will keep us shuttered for the foreseeable future, forcing thousands more people out of work, leading to the inevitable closure of small family-owned businesses, and irreparably devastating the Anaheim/Southern California community.” – https://twitter.com/DisneyParksNews/status/1318644525565321217?s=20 The Mayor of Anaheim, Harry Sidhu, seems to agree with Disney, saying in part on Twitter: “These guidelines fail working families and small business. As painful as this is, Disney and the city of Anaheim will survive. But too many Anaheim hotels, stores, and restaurants will not survive another year of this.” continuing “The unions of the Disneyland Resort agree and support the reopening of the theme parks in tier 3, not tier 4, which would wipe out jobs in our city and destroy lives.” – https://twitter.com/City_of_Anaheim/status/1318634185989369856?s=20 Disneyland Unions had drafted a letter to the Governor of California, Gavin Newsom, asking to be included in the discussions regarding the reopening of Disneyland. Previously, the unions asked to delay the opening for the union members safety, but Disney has made the requested changes, so they now support the reopening. – https://www.micechat.com/273190-breaking-disneyland-unions-call-on-california-to-reopen-disneyland/ Disneyland has come to agreement with most of the unions that represent their Cast Members on layoffs and recall procedures. Union Cast Members will be called back to work based on seniority. Most full-time members will not be let go, but part-time members should be concerned. Layoffs are expected to happen beginning next month. – https://www.micechat.com/273009-disneyland-update-you-arent-going-to-like-this/ We were a little concerned about a protest that was promoted online last week. It was billed as a protest to get the parks open for the good of the Cast Members, but it was also rumored to be organized by a conservative group from out of state that would turn it into more of an attack on Governor Gavin Newsom. Protesters did show up from both groups, with the cast member supporters wearing masks and being safe with COVID protections. The other group had a tent setup and were not distancing or wearing masks. Quite a difference between the groups. – https://www.micechat.com/273009-disneyland-update-you-arent-going-to-like-this/ More work is happening around the entrance to Tomorrowland that was originally scheduled to be complete by last Summer. The last of the “french fry” rocks have been removed. No word yet on when they plan to start the construction of the entrance planters. – https://www.micechat.com/273009-disneyland-update-you-arent-going-to-like-this/ Two focal points in the parks are getting a refurbishment. The Partners and Storytellers statues in each park are being cleaned up and are having the oxidation removed. Apparently, they look like a shiny new penny. – https://www.micechat.com/273009-disneyland-update-you-arent-going-to-like-this/ The votes are in and the new legacy lightsaber that will be available for purchase will be Cal Kestis’ from the video game Jedi: Fallen Order. A couple of other designs that are showing up are Ashoka Tano’s pair of sabers that feature hilts that change colors, and Count Dooku’s curved hilt. Disney has announced that two other legacy lightsabers will be retired to make room for the new designs. – https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2020/10/voting-results-are-in-for-the-legacy-lightsaber-challenge-plus-a-look-at-upcoming-legacy-lightsabers/ What organization is celebrating their 40th anniversary, and just surpassed half a million wishes granted? The Make-a-Wish Foundation! Disney and Make-a-Wish have been partners for a while now and have made more than 140,000 wishes come true. The 500,000 wish milestone went to 16 year old Karina, whose wish was to give kids a day to forget they’re sick. – https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2020/10/disney-helps-make-a-wish-grant-500000th-wish-during-their-40th-anniversary/ If you are a super fan of the Haunted Mansion like we are, then some of these unique crafts to make at home are for you! The Disney Parks Blog has posted some crafts including “Grim Grinning Garland” with “Tomb Sweet Tomb” headstones, a how-to create your own Madame Leota crystal ball, and how to become a ghost bride or happy haunt. With just a few ingredients, you can bring the ballroom to your dining room! – https://www.micechat.com/272952-happy-haunts-at-home-how-to-make-haunted-mansion-goodies/ Another Disney Paper Parks Happy Haunts release has been posted this week. This time, it is a little less Disneyland centered, as it features the Haunted Mansion version from the Magic Kingdom and Tokyo Disneyland. The stately mansion, grounds, and front gates are featured this time, along with some familiar friends. That’s right! The hitchhiking ghosts are present, practicing their terror, with ghoulish delight. – https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2020/10/disney-parks-blog-presents-disney-paper-parks-happy-haunts-edition-designed-by-walt-disney-imagineering-part-3/ For the Weeklyteers who are not close to a Disney Park, shopping district, or Disney Store, there is some good news if you are looking for a Disney mask! The collection has the typical array of options with leopard print, white and red strips, which are reminiscent of the original Jungle Cruise boats, and a leaf. The Jungle Cruise collection will be available via Merch Pass in November. – https://dlnewstoday.com/2020/10/photo-first-look-at-new-jungle-cruise-collection-for-minnie-mouse-the-main-attraction-series/ Discussion Topic: Return to Space Mountain – The Disneyland Encyclopedia – https://www.amazon.com/dp/1595800905/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_OveKFbX30ATG2 Disney Fandom – https://disney.fandom.com/wiki/Space_Mountain_(Disneyland) Undercover Tourist – https://www.undercovertourist.com/blog/secret-history-space-mountain/ Connection with the Matterhorn- Because of the success of the Matterhorn Walt decided that thrill rides did have a place in Disneyland. His original thought was to have the roller coaster be the centerpiece of a renovated Tomorrowland. The roller coaster was first called “Space Port” One of the first drawings of the new space themed attraction was done by John Hench around 1964. It resembled the exterior of our current Space Mountain but it also included tracks spiraling down the outside of the structure. With the death of Walt and the Walt Disney World project eating up funds, the high priced project was shelved. Imagineers revisited the idea years later when it was noticed that the Magic Kingdom lacked thrill rides, which were very popular with teenagers and young adults. Space Mountain first debuted in Orlando in 1975. It was a hit! Construction on Disneyland’s version began that same year on the land that was once used by the Flying Saucers. The Disneyland exterior was about 60 feet shorter than the one in Walt Disney World and the diameter of the building was about 100 feet smaller. This was because the Disneyland mountain would have one interior track instead of the 2 tracks in WDW. At the time, it was Disneyland’s second tallest structure! Costing about $20 million, it became the park’s most expensive attraction at the time and the first attraction to surpass the total cost to build Disneyland. The mountain cone was painted white, reached 118 feet in the air and housed 1.8 million cubic feet. Its footprint covered almost an acre of Tomorrowland. It is estimated that it took over a million man hours to design and construct the CA version. Space Mountain opened in May of 1977 to some of the longest lines in Disneyland’s history. The attraction sky rocketed the park to a new attendance milestone. Previously 1970 had been the only time annual attendance reached the 10 million mark, but in 1977 the new record was set to just under 11 million! But what made it so popular? The thought of a roller coaster in space is a pretty simple concept but Disney did an amazing job with the execution. The attraction tops out at 32mph but darkness of the attraction makes you feel as though you are going much faster. The imagineers used banked curves and dips to add thrill since they are unseen and not something the guest would anticipate. Air blasts and the sounds of the rocket vehicles add to the experience as well. The attraction has had some interesting changes over the years. Most notable was in 1997 when the music was updated to a more fast paced track, 1998 the exterior was painted in bronze and greens. In 2003 the attraction was closed for 2 years so work could be done to replace the track, update the rockets look, update the queue with a new silver spaceship, and restore the original white exterior. The original entrance ramp was removed and replaced with a walk way, and souvenir photos are now taken at the end of your journey. There have been several overlays throughout the years as well. In 2007 Rockin Space Mountain ran from January to April. The soundtrack was changed to “Higher Ground” by The Red Hot Chili Peppers. LED concert lighting was added along the tracks of the ride making the track and interior of the mountain visible. Space Mountain: Ghost Galaxy debuted in 2009 for Halloweentime. Ghost Galaxy had been running in Hong King since 2007. This version uses projections of a ghost chasing riders through the mountain. Hyper Space Mountain: originally debuted on 11/14/2015 during the “Season of the Force” an event celebrating the release of Star War The Force Awakens. This overlay features a soundtrack with music from John William’s score of the Star Wars films. Projections depict a mission towards the planet Jakku. The overlay has been removed and brought back several times over the years.

http://www.attractionchecklist.com - Join Grant Baciocco and Suzie as they go down the rabbit hole to ride and review Alice In Wonderland at Disneyland. Recorded on February 7, 2019. TRANSCRIPT: Welcome to Attraction Checklist. Let’s head over to Fantasyland in Disneyland to ride on one of the most popular attractions there, Alice in Wonderland.  The Disneyland website describes this attraction by saying: Take a topsy-turvy trip into the nonsensical world of Disney’s Alice in Wonderland aboard an oversized caterpillar.  There are no height requirements for this attraction and the Thrill Level describes the ride as being a Slow Ride that is Dark and Loud. Before we get lost down a rabbit hole, here are five fast facts about Disneyland’s Alice in Wonderland. 1. An Alice in Wonderland walkthrough was originally planned for  the opening of Disneyland but time and budgets got in the way.  Three years later on June 14, 1958, the ride through Alice in Wonderland attraction opened at Disneyland. 2.  Many people who worked on the Alice in Wonderland film, also worked on the attraction including Ken Anderson, Mary Blair Claude Coats and John Hench. 3. Alice in Wonderland was Disney’s first ever two level ride through attraction with the majority of the action taking place on the ride’s second floor above Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride! 4. Disney Legend Kathryn Beaumont, the original voice for Alice in the film, reprised her role for several incarnations of this attraction. 5. In 2014, the attraction was given a technology update and now features projections of some of the animation from the film and new animation created just for the ride. Now let’s get small with Alice and ride Alice in Wonderland.  Along for the adventure is Suzie and after we ride we’ll give you out thoughts on this attraction.  This is a binaural recording so if you have headphones put them on now as we ride Alice in Wonderland at Disneyland! The Mad Chatters Podcast | Walt Disney World and Around the Disney Universe

50 years ago a manned space shuttle touched down on the moon for the first time. But 15 years before that giant leap for mankind, Walt Disney was already working with scientists and engineers in order to communicate to the general public that space travel was not just science fiction; it was a possible reality. On this week’s episode we trace The Walt Disney Company’s connections with space travel, beginning with three documentary shorts produced by the company in the 50s, and ending with a closer look at the many space-themed attractions that have made their way to the Disney parks over the years. Plus, in a round of Armchair Imagineering we share our own ideas for how space can play a role at the parks moving forward. In another edition of The Windows of Main Street, U.S.A., we look at the contributions of John Hench, who designed a lot of opening-day Tomorrowland at Disneyland. We also share a few bizarre stories from our adventures in WDW in the segment “Did That Just Happen?” Tune in now! If you want to interact with us online, we’d love for you to connect with us on Facebook (/madchatterspodcast), Instagram (@madchatters), and Twitter (@MadChatters). Starport75 - A Disney Podcast

Opened January 15, 1975 Was the first Space Mountain to open, although it was originally planed for Disneyland as "Space Port” Designing started in 1964, but Space Port was stopped because of Disney’s death It was revived because of the popularity of WDW with teens and young adults; the Magic Kingdom needed a thrill ride Disney Artist John Hench drew the original concept art of the SM exterior It was Walt who wanted the roller coaster to be in the dark so he could have precise control of the lighting and to project images on the interior walls. Selling RCA on an attraction to spend $10 million sponsoring the attraction was key to the project In the book “The Disney Mountains” author Jason Surrell writes about Marty Sklar’s efforts to sell the idea to RCA Disney had an agreement with RCA in 1970 to do all the infrastructure communications for WDW The contract stipulated that if Disney could come up with an attraction RCA would be willing to spend $10 million dollars The original pitch was a new version of Mission to Mars that took people inside a computer The meeting with the RCA CEO, Robert Sarnoff went horribly. Sarnoff sat at the head of a long conference table, and couldn’t hear the presentation and couldn’t see the materials. He asked his staff “who are these guys?" That’s when Marty and John Hench regrouped and moved forward with the Space Mountain plans The pitch for SM, Sklar brought Card Walker, Disney’s CEO to the meeting, as he and Sarnoff knew each other. They also insisted that Sarnoff sit in the middle of the table so he could see and hear. The story for the SM presentation focused on communication, as RCA had pulled out of the computer business shortly after the first presentation. The attraction would still consist of a rocket ride through space, but guests would see RCA satellites orbiting in space and after the ride, guests would visit the Home of Future Living which showed off the latest RCA home entertainment products, and some future products, and the last thing guest would see before exiting was themselves on color TV RCA approved the sponsorship, and the project started The project was lead by John Hench and Marty Sklar, and George McGinnis and Claude Coats - of pirates of the Caribbean and haunted mansion fame— were on the team Former astronaut Gordon Cooper, commander of Mercury 9 and Gemini 5, became a member of the Disney team and provided personal consultation to help insure the authenticity of Space Mountain. The roller coaster was developed by Arrow (who built the Matterhorn) and Disney It’s made up of 2 tracks: Alpha (to the left) and Omega. Alpha is 3,196 feet long while Omega is 10 feet shorter. Top speed is between 28 - 35 mph Ride duration 2 minutes, 30 seconds It’s a pure gravity ride with no boosters or retarders; there are only braking zones. If the ride stops, the brakes are simply released and the trains coast back to the station There are 30 trains (15 for each side), with two cars per train, with 3 people per car (although originally, the cars sat 4 people per car; this was changed in 1989) The exit was the Home of Future Living from 1975 - 1985 and pretty much included everything that was presented to RCA during the pitch meeting: featured the theme song "Here's to the Future" Guests stepped onto the Goodyear Speedramp and went past scenes of the Home of Future Living (from Widen Your World) Started outside on the patio with the father on a lounge chair looking at a briefcase size TV screen on a business video call Then, inside the rooms were a series of white hexagonal modules with white, yellow, orange, and brown decor First, the nursery where a toy clown held a camera pointed at the baby; the camera signal was sent to the other screens so the family could monitor the baby Next, the family room shows the grandmother taking a two way TV pottery lesson Then, the Rec room, where a teenage boy took in some snow skiing on a SelectaVision simulator while the younger brother assembled a model rocket via televised instructions Back outside, a boy is at the front door, talking to the mother inside via camera Again inside, the kitchen shows the mother and a neighbor sitting in front of a large TV wall unit reviewing an online catalog system, along with a picture in picture of the boy at the door Then, the teenage daughter’s bedroom watching a SelectaVision videodisc movie on a large screen Finally, was the entertainment center where a young girl and boy watched a football game on a wall-sized screen Then, you travelled under the train tracks on the speed ramp until you reached the incline and the TVs where you could see yourself In 1985, it was changed to RYCA-1 which showed what life might be like living in a space colony on another planet; the sets are pretty much the same as they are today. They were changed to reflect sending packages across spatial distances using teleportation when FedEx took over sponsorship in 1994. And during the 2009 refurbishment, it was changed to the current design of Starport 75 and promoting different destinations around the universe to which Space Mountain's rockets could take them FedEx added TVs to the waiting area inside and played SMTV which had news clips from around the galaxy Sponsors: RCA: 1975-1993 (19); FedEx: 1994 - 2004 (11); sponsorless: 2005 - now (14)

WDW Opinion Ep. 26 - Coronado Springs Resort Walking Tour Right now Coronado Springs is undergoing massive change. At this point most if not all of the guest rooms have been renovated. But there is still plenty of work to be done at the resort. Its newest edition, the Destino Tower will be opening this July and will bring with it 545 new guest rooms. It’s going to be a massive new addition and completely change the resort. But right now it can be more of a hindrance to the guest as it is being built. Hank and I recently got the opportunity to stay at the resort. We had just stayed at the Pop Century Resort where we gave a walking tour so we decided to take a walking tour of Coronado as well. On it we discussed the construction, what it will mean for the future of the resort and we share what we like and don’t like about the place. Plus we talk about tickets going on sale for two 2019 events at Walt Disney World, we share the results of the 2019 Walt Disney World Marathon and we honor a Disney legend. #104: Disney Family Album - Ward Kimball

The Disney Family Album was an original documentary series produced by The Disney Channel in the mid 1980’s. Episodes aired from June 1984 until January 1986 with each episode running about 30 minutes. They were produced by Michael Bonifer along with Carden Walker, the son of Card Walker (The third Disney Company leader after Walt and Roy Disney). The series lasted just 20 episodes and was designed to take a look at the artist and performance that shaped Disney Studios and Disney Parks, most of whom worked directly with Walt. The people featured created some of the most iconic Disney characters, movies and attractions ever developed. Narrated by Buddy Ebsen, the series is a true history lesson and provides the perfect time capsule with incredible insight and behind the scenes stories. In the greater scheme of things, the timing of these 20 episodes was perfect; any earlier or later in Disney History, and they may not have happened. Of the 20 episodes produced, 7 showcased one of Walt’s Nine Old Men: Marc Davis, Frank Thomas, Ollie Johnston, Eric Larson, Wolfgang (or Woolie) Rytherman, Milt Kahl and Ward Kimball – all featuring stories directly from them! Only Les Clark and John Lounsbery, who both passed away in the 1970’s, are missing from Walt’s Nine Old Men. Other episodes featured Disney Legends like The Sherman Brothers, Ken Anderson, Annette Funicello, and Jim Macdonald to name just a few. One episode focused on Voice Actors, while another Disneyland Designers and WED Imagineers including interviews with Herb Ryman, Bill Evans, John Hench, and a very young Tony Baxter. Disney Family Album was produced by MICA. The master tapes were given to Disney sometime after the series was cancelled in 1986. Most of the original footage was lost in the Disney tape vault, which was not digitized. While some has been found, most of the original footage and the finished first episode, “Clarence Ducky Nash”, was not found. The remainder of the episodes come from Disney Vault replays captured on VHS in the 1990’s. The Clarence Nash episode was not replayed in the 1990’s. Brian McEntee and John Lasseter are credited with the “Title Design”, which of course, was computer generated; the timing is very interesting. Shortly after the production of the title design in early 1984, John was fired from Disney for promoting computer animation making this title design one of his last Disney credits.   Of course, he joined Lucasfilms Computer Graphic Group which was later sold to Steve Jobs and became Pixar in 1986 – we all know the story from there. For this episode of SamsDisneyDiary, I’m highlighting the second episode in the series, Ward Kimball. From a tour of Ward’s full size train in his backyard, stories of vacationing with Walt, reminiscing about the Firehouse 5 Plus 2, or his amazing toy collection, Ward covers his thoughts behind animating the Three Caballeros and the creating of Jiminy Cricket. It’s an amazing 30 minute journey into the mind of a remarkable man. Look for all 19 Episodes of The Disney Family Album at www.SamsDisneyDiary.com and www.youtube.com/samsdisneydiary

#94: Legends of Imagineering

2017 marks the 30th Anniversary of the Disney Legends Award, and the opening of the D23 Expo featured the “Legends Ceremony” honoring the 10 newest Disney Legends representing film, movie, television, theater, animation, publishing and voice personalities.  For 2017, the inductees included: Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Oprah Winfrey, Stan Lee, and Garry Marshall among others.  Personally, I’m partial to the Imagineers, the people behind the Disney Parks…the people that “found a way to get it done”.  The final panel of the D23 Expo focused on the Imagineering Legends, and the newest being Wayne Jackson.  One of Wayne’s many accomplishments? Moving It’s a Small World from the 1964/65 NY World Fair to Disneyland!  It sounds easy enough, but how do you do that?  Where do you start?  Wayne found a way to make it happen; after all, that’s what Imagineers do…make it happen.  The panel was really a history lesson.   Hosted by John Stamos, yes the John Stamos, who has the “D” from the Disneyland sign in his back yard, (he might have been on television at some point too J) no doubt he is a Disney Nerd!  John was joined by Disney Imagineering Legends Tony Baxter and Marty Sklar.   The majority of the panel was a walk down memory lane with Marty and Tony reminiscing about their personal experiences with iconic Imagineering Legends…personal accounts of working with Walt, John Hench, Herb Ryman, Ken Anderson, Mary Blair, X Atencio, the list goes on and included personal stories outside of the parks.  It was a fascinating hour of history and storytelling from some of the best storytellers in the business.   At the time of this recording, there was no way of knowing that this would be Marty’s Sklar’s last public appearance.   Marty has been a Disney Imagineering Ambassador since his retirement from Imagineering in 2009.  Marty retired July 17th 2009 after 54 years of service, receiving windows on Disneyland’s Main Street.  Marty’s window reads “Main Street College of Arts & Sciences – Martin A. Sklar, Dean”.  Of course, July 17th is Disneyland’s Birthday, a fitting day to retire and get a window on Main Street USA.  Marty retired on Disneyland’s 54th Birthday with over 54 years with the company, starting as the editor of the Disneyland Newspaper one month before the park opened.  Marty is the only Disney employee to personally attend the opening of every Disney Park around the world. Marty, Thank You!  Thank you for the countless stories, the kind words you had for me during our brief encounter at D23 2017, and thank you for the autograph inside my copy of “One Little Spark” – I will always remember “Without a Story, You Have Nothing!”

It was inevitable—call it destiny, if you will--that the creative paths of Walt Disney and Salvador Dali would one day cross. Both men were born in the early 1900s, and although they were continents apart, they shared similar upbringings. Both had artistic ambitions and both would eventually become the standard-bearers of their respective mediums: Walt in animation and visual storytelling, Dali in fine art and the surrealist movement. Their personalities could not have been more different. Dali was the flamboyant eccentric, Walt the more reserved, but no-less driven, filmmaker.  Each saw the other as a kindred spirit, though. And what began as a distant mutual admiration, evolved into a creative collaboration and later a lifetime friendship. In the late 1940s, Dali would come to the Disney Studios to help craft "Destino," a surreal short film intended to push the limits of animation and storytelling.  It was not to be, however, What Dali called “a magical exposition of life in the labyrinth of time,” Walt called “a simple love story—boy meets girl.” It was there the two artists remained at odds. After less than a year's work on the project, "Destino" was shelved. Decades later, the Walt Disney Studios would resurrect the film from more than 150 surviving story sketches by Dali and Disney artist John Hench. The resulting film would be released in 2003 to critical acclaim, winning numerous film festival awards and being nominated for an Academy Award. The Walt Disney Family Museum in San Francisco is hosting an exhibition about the two friends and showmen. “Disney and Dali: Architects of the Imagination” explores the artistic collaboration between the two men, showcasing not only original works of Dali, but also that of Disney artists Mary Blair, John Hench, Eyvind Earle and Kay Nielsen. Ted Nicolaou is curator of the exhibition. As a filmmaker, Ted has directed a number of horror films including cult favorites "Terrorvision" and "Subspecies." He's also created a number of DVD and Blu-ray bonus documentaries for Walt Disney Home Entertainment, most notably “Dali & Disney: A Date with Destino” which was included on the 2010 Blu-ray release of "Fantasia 2000." Ted Nicolaou is Tim's guest today in "The Mouse Castle Lounge."www.TheMouseCastle.comRSS Feed: http://themousecastle.libsyn.com/rss

The Disney Avenue Podcast is back with a guest I think you may have heard of...Marty Sklar! Dusty Sage, founder and CEO of MiceChat.com, joins host Keith Michael Mahne for another fantastic interview with a man that needs no introduction. Marty talks about joining the company, working and writing for Walt Disney, his old pals John Hench and Herb Ryman, finding out Walt had passed away, whether he will attend the opening of Shanghai Disney and so much more. This is a show you definitely won't want to miss. As former vice chairman and principal creative executive of Walt Disney Imagineering, Marty Sklar stood as a dedicated torchbearer of Walt Disney’s philosophy since first joining the company a month before Disneyland opened in 1955. He helped express and preserve Walt’s spirit of optimism, happiness, and hope for the future through attractions and special exhibitions in Disney theme parks around the world. For more than 50 years, Walt’s inspiration has burned in Marty. He once said, “Working with Walt Disney was the greatest ‘training by fire’ anyone could ever experience. Our training was by Walt, who was always there pitching in with new ideas and improving everyone else’s input. The fire was that we were constantly breaking new ground to create deadline projects never attempted before in this business. That, I’m proud to say, has never stopped in my years at Disney.” During his early years at Disney, Marty not only learned Walt’s philosophy firsthand, but metabolized and translated it into materials he wrote for the master showman which were used in publications, television appearances, and special films. Among them was a 20-minute movie devoted to communicating Walt’s vision of EPCOT, his Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow, originally intended to help resolve the urban challenges found in American cities. Marty first became an Imagineering officer in 1974 when appointed vice president, concepts and planning, a role in which he guided creative development of Epcot Center at the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida. In 1979, he was named vice president of creative development, followed by executive vice president in 1982. He served as president and vice chairman from 1987 to 1996. As vice chairman, Marty provided leadership for the Imagineering creative staff, delivering breakthrough entertainment concepts for Disney parks and resorts including Disneyland Paris, the Tokyo Disney Resort, and Hong Kong Disneyland. In 2001, Marty was recognized as a Disney Legend. He retired from Disney on July 17, 2009, after 53 years with the company. He currently serves as president of Ryman Arts, whose Ryman Program for Young Artists honors the late Herb Ryman. Thanks for joining us for WEDWay Radio, a show about Disney history, Disney parks, and touring.  This is episode 98 This weeks show is quite unique in that we don't look at an individual attraction or land. Instead we focus on a very special era in Disney history; the technological advancements of the mid 20th century that allowed breakthroughs in new show elements and attractions in the Disney parks. This time period really culminates with the Disneyland Tencennial and all of the technological advancements related tot he celebration and the Disneyland 10th Anniversary show.  We look at some of the exciting projects and attractions that are associated with this time including the creation of New Orleans Square, The Haunted Mansion, It's a Small World, Pirates of the Caribbean and the Plaza Restaurant. Walt Disney himself hosts the episode of the Wonderful World of Color episode featuring these projects and he takes Ms Tencennial, Julie Reihm, around WED introducing her to the projects. (((HEADPHONES STRONGLY RECOMMENDED))) In this episode, the Mouse Lounge salutes America… Disney style!  Each week, in From the Vault we sample a clip from a classic Disney film, short, television or radio program, or Disneyland Record.  This week, from the 1980 Disneyland Record #2511 “Yankee Doodle Mickey” have a listen to Mickey and the gang performing You’re a Grand Old Flag and the Armed Forces Melody.  Listen carefully, that’s Wayne Allwine as Mickey, three years before he officially inherited the roll from Jimmy McDonald in Mickey’s Christmas Carol.   Yankee Doodle Mickey was given the CD treatment in 2002.  While several songs from the original LP were removed, at the time The American Adventure hosted an a capella group called, “American  Vybe.”  Their studio rendition of America the Beautiful is featured here.  From the Walt Disney Archives:  In 2004 Leonard Maltin met with John Hench, at the time, Disney’s longest-term employee, and discusses how after the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Burbank studio was instantly turned into a base for the military.  Then, Walt's nephew recalls his boyhood memories of the Disney studio during the war and also touches on the Disney insignia's popularity and his own method of promoting Victory Through Air Power.  Each week we present a high definition ride-through from a Disney Park East or a Disney Park West.   This week we look into the making of and then take in the Magic Kingdom’s Hall of Presidents.  With new narration by Morgan Freeman and a short speech by President Obama, this iteration of the attraction in a class by itself.  We'll close this week’s show with a concert in the park performed by the Disneyland Band.  Enjoy, “Music in America” followed by the Flag Retreat Ceremony.  Please keep your head, arms, feet and legs inside the podcast at all times.  Driver you’re clear!  Let's reflect on this holiday by heeding Walt Disney, who spoke the following words at the Metropolitan Opera house in New York City in 1941, as America tumbled into World War II:  "Tomorrow will be better. For as long as America keeps alive the ideas of freedom and a better life, all men will want to be free and share our way of life. I thank God and America for the right to live and raise my family under the flag of tolerance, democracy and freedom."  The Mouse Lounge is a fan-based podcast and is not affiliated with the Walt Disney Company or its subsidiaries.  Non factual statements made by the Mouse Lounge hosts, Gary Chambers and his guests are their current opinions only and are subject to change without notice.  All copyrighted material used with permission or under the Fair Use Doctrine in Section 107 of the United States Copyright Act.  Although the information in this program is believed to be reliable, Mr. Chambers, and Mouselounge.com do not make any representations or warranties as to its accuracy or completeness, nor do they assess, verify or guarantee the suitability of information.
