The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters, and Scott Eklund - got up bright and early Saturday morning to offer up their thoughts on Washington's opponent today, the USC Trojans, as well as talk about which UW team shows up today - the one that beat Oregon, or the one that squeaked by Arizona State and Stanford. But before the game preview begins, the guys discuss the big news that came out during the week - the release of the 2024 Big Ten Football schedule. You can check out the full schedule HERE. What are the guys' takes on the schedule? Did it treat the Huskies fairly, as well as the other new Big Ten programs located out on the west coast? Then the talk moves to today's UW-USC game. It's the first time the Huskies have been to LA Memorial Coliseum since 2015 (a game they won), and the guys start the conversation out with the lingering injury questions. Who is going to be available today? It sounds like Tuli Letuligasenoa should be available, but what about Jalen McMillan? What about Asa Turner and Kamren Fabiculanan? The conversation then veered into the other big storyline coming out of Montlake this past week; the first College Football Playoff ranking. Washington checked in at No. 5, right in front of Oregon but out of the playoff places. Is it justified? Do the national talking heads have it right in downgrading the Huskies because of their last two games? And the Washington defense, one that has started to step up and refuse to break...will they have enough gas in the tank to deal with current Heisman Trophy candidate Caleb Williams and his cadre of skill players, starting with running back MarShawn Lloyd and receivers like Brenden Rice and Tahj Washington? After a quick break the guys flip it to the other side of the line and wonder if USC is looking at this as a 'get right' game against Washington's offense. Can they limit UW's shots down the field? Is there a chance of that happening considering the Trojans' woeful record in allowing big plays to happen? And why is USC still sticking with DC Alex Grinch? Whatever happens today, it's a 'Show Me' game for both the Huskies and Trojans. It's one of the featured national games this weekend, in prime time on ABC, so there's no excuses. The games you remember are played in November, and Kalen DeBoer showed last year he takes November vçry seriously - including ranked wins over Oregon State and Oregon. To finish out the pregame show, Kim and Chris update fans on the two games the men's basketball team play this coming week - Monday versus Bellarmine and Thursday against Northern Kentucky - and then the guys round out the show with their final thoughts on the game. It should be one for the ages. To learn more about listener data and our privacy practices visit: https://www.audacyinc.com/privacy-policy Learn more about your ad choices. The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters, and Scott Eklund - had plenty to say after Washington's 42-33 win over Stanford Saturday afternoon at Stanford Stadium. And the first thing they talked about was the atmosphere at the stadium - or lack of atmosphere. The announced attendance was around a little over 24,000 fans, but it felt like closer to half that number. And maybe half of THAT number were wearing Purple and Gold. The Huskies not only had to bring their own energy to the mix - which was difficult to do as many on the team were suffering from cold/flu symptoms, including quarterback Michael Penix Jr. - but they also had to do it down a number of key players. They did get Germie Bernard back, but Jalen McMillan once again wasn't able to get fully back in the mix. Julius Buelow did make his return, and the right guard started the game, which meant Parker Brailsford started at center. On defense, the injuries were even more prominent. Tuli Letuligasenoa was at the game and suited but did not play. And the Huskies were down three safeties - Asa Turner, Kamren Fabiculanan, and Vincent Nunley - so Makell Esteen made his first career start. Despite never trailing in the game, it always felt like the Cardinal were breathing down Washington's neck. Up 21-7 with 5 minutes left before halftime, Stanford was able to hit two field goals to bring the margin down to a single score. UW's offense rarely saw the field the first half, as Stanford had the ball for over 21 minutes. The guys talked about the Cardinal targeting the defensive backs, specifically Esteen and cornerback Jabbar Muhammad, questionable pass interference calls on both sides, and the glaring lack of holding calls made (again). After a quick break the guys turned to the other side of the ball, where the Huskies found a little more of the ball and also some timely plays - including a 92-yard pass from Penix to Ja'Lynn Polk for six. But two red zone turnovers in the fourth quarter made the game a lot closer than UW fans would have wanted, and the guys talked about the hit-and-miss nature of how the offense was as a whole, especially the receivers. And then there was even more talk about penalties, as both teams were hit with costly personal foul calls at various points that stalled drives. Before they close things out, Kim, Chris, and Scott give their final thoughts as the Huskies now get set to take another road trip - this time to USC - and the first College Football Playoff rankings come out on Halloween. How much credit will the Huskies get for being one of five Power-5 teams to stay unbeaten so far? The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters, and Scott Eklund - got up bright and early Saturday morning to offer up their thoughts on Washington's opponent today, the Stanford Cardinal, as well as put to bed any lingering questions surrounding the Huskies' 15-7 win over Arizona State last weekend. They start the conversation out with those lingering questions, as well as talk of sign stealing. It's become the hot topic in college football with what's going on right now at Michigan. Did it happen last weekend at Husky Stadium? And would UW moving from the north sideline to the south sideline help alleviate any possible sign stealing issues during games? The guys also recapped what they heard from the Washington players and coaches this week about the Arizona State game, what they learned from that game, and the motivation - especially on offense - to set things right today on the Farm. There is certainly a lot to watch out for with the Huskies on that side of the ball. After a quick break the guys turn their attention to today's game, starting with any injury updates. Jalen McMillan, Germie Bernard, Julius Buelow, Tuli Letuligasenoa, Asa Turner, and Kamren Fabiculanan are all players Kim will be looking for on the sidelines pregame, as well as safety Vincent Nunley. It's unclear what issue Nunley is dealing with at this time. Then talk turns to the job new Stanford Head Coach Troy Taylor has in front of him revamping the roster and culture on the Farm after the departure of long-time head coach David Shaw. Scott offers up a quick recruiting update, including thoughts on the two verbal commitments Washington received at the beginning of the week - and then Kim and Chris talk Husky Hoops for a minute. The men's team starts their 2023-24 season off with their exhibition game versus St. Martin's tomorrow night at Bank of America Arena. To wrap up the pregame show, the guys give their final thoughts on the game and what they expect to see this afternoon. The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters, and Scott Eklund - did their best to put into context just how dominant the Washington Huskies were in their 41-7 win at Michigan State Saturday afternoon at Spartan Stadium. For a top-10 team, it felt like there were a lot of obstacles in their way pre-game; first road test of the season, playing on grass (which has never been a thing the Huskies have done well with), and everything that was going on with the Michigan State program. The Spartans had suspended their head coach, Mel Tucker, and brought back former head coach Mark Dantonio to help first-time head coach Harlon Barnett. Would Michigan State rally around their long-time assistant and former head coach? Would they play like their backs were to the wall and the world was against them? Nope. As it turned out, the home team withered at the first offensive foray by Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr. and his cadre of impressive receivers - Rome Odunze, Jalen McMillan, and Ja'Lynn Polk - and the Huskies never looked back. To start, Kim - calling in from East Lansing - set the pre-game scene. He was impressed with Spartan Stadium and how they do things there. The guys also talked about all of the injury issues Washington was dealing with too; their starting safety (Asa Turner) and starting center (Matteo Mele) were out, and then we found out during warmups that another safety, Kamren Fabiculanan, would be out as well. And during the game, McMillan got banged up and left guard Julius Buelow was also hurt. But with all the walking wounded, the Huskies never flinched and actually took the game to their hosts. The guys rolled through how thoroughly dominant the UW offense was, as they threw for a school-record 536 yards and 713 total yards - second-highest number in school history and the most ever gained against Michigan State in their program's history. After a quick break, the talk turned to the defense and how the Huskies were able to hold Michigan State to only 53 yards on the ground. Zion Tupuola-Fetui sacked MSU QB Noah Kim twice and 24 defensive players were credited with at least one tackle in the game. The guys finish it up with their final thoughts on the game and what it means for the Huskies as they continue to push forward in search of their first Pac-12 Championship in five years. The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters, and Scott Eklund - hit the snooze button only once this morning to get up bright and early to talk about today's Washington-Michigan State game. Well, two of us did. Kim is in East Lansing, Mich. to get all the pregame and postgame news while Chris and Scott keep things locked down at home. To start the show, Kim talked about the first thing that comes to mind when looking at the matchups for this game, namely the injury situation for the Huskies and who may be missing today's game. Matteo Mele, Asa Turner, and Davon Banks all got hurt in UW's win over Tulsa in week two, but Huskies Head Coach Kalen DeBoer said this week that a couple of players that did not play against the Golden Hurricane - Faatui Tuitele and Zion Tupuola-Fetui - are expected to be available to play the Spartans. So how will the injuries affect what the Huskies want to do on both sides of the ball? And who will be the 'next men up' to fill roles if that's required? Will the Huskies have enough to force MSU QB Noah Kim to throw the ball in certain down-and-distance situations? Can they slow down UConn transfer RB Nathan Carter? And on the offensive side of things, will the Huskies be able to generate enough of a run game to keep Michigan State honest? Will they continue to put receivers in the backfield to help supplement the running backs group? And will that even matter if Michael Penix Jr. is given time to find his targets? Scott talks a little bit about recruiting, how many he expects the Huskies to sign for the 2024 class from the high school ranks, and how that number is going to reflect how many players they could take from the transfer portal. The guys close the show out with their final thoughts on the game and what the Huskies need to do to move to 3-0 on the season. The boys talk about Washington's 56-19 win over Boise State yesterday at sunny Husky Stadium. The game featured Boise fans mooning the Husky crowd, physical play from Asa Turner and Dillon Johnson possibly being the reincarnation of Wayne Taulapapa. The show opens with AI Pup responding to the one time Stalin took three days off from Hardcore Husky and his concerns about going on his own sabbatical. The Dawgman.com interns - Jack McCauley and Intern Emeritus Luke Mounger - finish out their season position preview series by tackling the secondary. They start out with the newest additions - Oklahoma State transfer CB Jabbar Muhammad and juco cornerback Thaddeus Dixon - and how they slot in to the competition that has been brewing since the end of the 2022 season. Muhammad and Dixon are competing with existing cornerbacks Elijah Jackson, Jaivion Green, and Davon Banks. Who is standing out? Who do Jack and Luke think will end up standing out from the crowd? The guys also take a quick look at the future depth at corner, with a nod to Darren Barkins, Caleb Presley, Leroy Bryant, and Curley Reed. And Jack thinks one of that group might make an early jump in 2023 if needed. Before they move to the safeties, Jack and Luke take a gander at the Husky position, a nickel-style back that the UW defensive coaches like as a hybrid between a safety and a linebacker. Mishael Powell, Tristan Dunn, and Kamren Fabiculanan are the main players talked about here. Moving to safety, the first names on the team sheet are Asa Turner and Dominique Hampton, and Jack and Luke break down what they think those two players need to do this fall in order to take that next step in their development. They also break down the safety depth behind the veterans - Makell Esteen and Vincent Nunley - as well as the idea that both Fabiculanan and Dunn can help out at both safety and Husky when needed. Jack and Luke finish out this preview pod by taking a look at the secondary as a complete group between the three positions and their role within the defense as a whole. Locked On Sun Devils - Daily Podcast On Arizona State Sun Devils Football & Basketball
The Washington Huskies football program is coming off an uncharacteristic 4-8 season in 2021. The Huskies' offense struggled to do much of anything while the defense couldn't stop a nosebleed. Things weren't much better with the Jimmy Lake drama, but the recently successful program has moved forward and looks to a brighter future under new offensive-minded head coach Kalen DeBoer. Joining DeBoer, who spent the last two seasons coaching the Fresno State Bulldogs, will be a cast of misfits including former Indiana quarterback Michael Penix, Jr. Washington will also be banking on guys like Jalen McMillan and Rome Odunze to build off successful freshman campaigns. There is also the intriguing storyline of whether or not Jaxson Kirkland can return to form at left tackle after a devastating injury a year ago. Defensively, it appears to be more of the same for the Huskies, and not in a good way. The defense has to cope with the losses of linebacker Jackson Sirmon and defensive backs Kyler Gordon and Trent McDuffie while returning a crew that largely underwhelmed in 2021. While there is some intriguing young talent on the defensive line with Vio Tunuufi and Faatui Tuitele returning, the defense will be largely based on what transfer linebacker Cam Bright can accomplish in his likely only season with the program, while a secondary of Alex Cook and Asa Turner hopes to rebound. How does all of this play into week six's game against our Arizona State Sun Devils football program? Don't count this is a guaranteed win, says host Richie Bradshaw, as we break down why the Washington Huskies football program could give the Sun Devils more fits than we'd like to see on this edition of the Locked On Sun Devils podcast. Washington captures the ugliest win in the history of college football. The win over Arizona puts the Dawgs at 2-2 in the Pac-12 and 3-4 overall. Derek, Joey and Woolley dish on Morris misfires, Asa Turner late-game heroics, and Jen Cohen's fashion sense. This week's shout out goes to HuskyJW. Come join the fun at HardcoreHusky.com.
On his mindset throughout his time on campus... I just try to keep my mind right. We compete. I just keep my head down and try to do my best. On things he wants to do better... Tackling. There's lots of things, but tackling is the biggest thing. Getting down the finer points and details are important too. On his thought process when he sees the ball in the air... The Oregon State pick was on my second play of the game and against BYU (in 2019) it was up in the air and I just went up and got it. I don't really think out there when the ball is in the air. On his wide receiver skills and why he chose defense... There were only a few schools who offered me as a receiver. When I was going through the recruiting process, that helped me narrow things down because I wanted to play DB. I didn't decide until my senior year where I wanted to play in college, but I love playing DB. On Dorian Thompson-Robinson being mobile... This is the best we've practiced all season. We've faced athletic quarterbacks, so it's nothing new for us, but he's a good quarterback and we're getting prepared. On the bye week... Looking forward to this game no matter what. I don't think the players really needed a bye, but it's allowed us to get things down and we've practiced really well. On the throwback jerseys... I actually haven't seen them in person yet, only on Instagram, but I'm excited about getting to wear them. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
UW safety Asa Turner speaks with the media ahead of Saturday's homecoming game against UCLA.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
After last week's frustrating loss to Cal, the Huskies are at a bit of a crossroads as they head into their game later today against Hawaii. One of the biggest concerns to come out of 20-19 loss to Cal at Husky Stadium last week is where their receiving corps' confidence level lies. Andre Baccellia, Aaron Fuller and Chico McClatcher, all seniors, had multiple drops and missed opportunities and during the week we spoke with McClatcher and Baccellia, each of whom just gave the company line of needing to catch the ball when it hits them in the hands. That may be of little solace to Husky fans who want to see how some of the younger receivers, specifically Puka Nacua and Austin Osborne, and what they can do in the offense. In addition to the receiver group, there's also some concern about the defense and whether the group that is out on the field can be better than previous iterations. A big part of what has made the Husky defense so successful since the arrival of Chris Petersen in 2014 has been its ability to get turnovers, but two games into the 2019 season, Washington has none and you know that has to be a focus for the coaches on that side of the ball. Also, which young defensive players deserve more playing time and which could use a rest? Cameron Williams impressed during the spring and in fall camp, but so far the returns on his play have been mixed. Could someone like Brandon McKinney come in and see more playing time or is there a chance another freshman, Asa Turner, could see more reps? Another player who many think should see an increase in playing time is outside linebacker Laiatu Latu and, if he's healthy, expect him to get on the field a lot more. All those subjects and a few more were discussed by Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters and Scott Eklund as they get your ready for kickoff against the Rainbow Warriors later today... The Washington Huskies kick off the 2019 season at noon against one of the top FCS programs in the country, Eastern Washington, a team which played in the FCS National Title game back in January. Heading into the game there are quite a few storylines that fans and the media have been talking about. How does Washington's offense transition after four seasons with quarterback Jake Browning and tailback Myles Gaskin now gone? Does the defensive line have what it takes to keep Eastern Washington's explosive offense in check? Will the Huskies employ a spy to keep an eye on Eagles quarterback Eric Barriere? How many of the talented true freshmen will play this week and will they play all season? The last two times the Huskies played the Eagles, both at Husky Stadium, the Dawgs were pushed to the brink, winning 59-52 in overtime back on September 6, 2014, in Chris Petersen's first home game as the head coach with the Dawgs. In 2011, the Huskies barely held off the Eagles, eking out a 30-27 win as Desmond Trufant intercepted a pass in the endzone on the final play of the game to secure the win. Will this be a repeat of those results? The stress of that may be too much for Husky Nation to bear. One exciting thing about the start of any season is projecting which true freshmen may play in week one and which freshmen may play enough to burn their redshirts. We know that Tim Horn and Cameron Williams, both of whom are listed as starters will likely play more than the four-game maximum, but other players, like Asa Turner, Trent McDuffie, and Puka Nacua may all play enough to burn their redshirts, but at the very least, Saturday will be their first taste of big-time college football and that's exactly why they signed their letters-of-intent. In today's DawgmanRadio Podcast, Kim Grinolds, Scott Eklund, and Chris Fetters touch on those subjects as well as others as they give you something to whet your appetite as you enjoy your pregame festivities... New Husky football beat writer Mike Vorel joins Adam Jude to break down the Huskies' signing of Daniel Heimuli and Asa Turner on National Signing Day, and discuss the Huskies' chances with four-star receiver Puka Nacua.
Today was the second signing day of the season, and the Dawgs have picked up a couple of big recruits; Asa Turner and Daniel Heimuli. Dick was concerned when Petersen was hired that he might not be able to pull top West Coast recruits to Washington. It appears at this point that those concerns were unfounded. Coach Petersen himself joins the show to talk about the recruiting class, what was learned from the Rose Bowl, expectations for next season, and more. What can we reasonably expect from Jacob Eason. Some are already putting him in the first round of next year's NFL Draft, and that's not just Dawg fans.
