Cincinnati Bengals offensive line coach Frank Pollack jumped back In The Trenches with Dave Lapham, presented by First Star Logistics, to discuss how excited he is about the group of offensive linemen he worked with during recent OTAs and minicamp. Coach Pollack stresses he feels this is the best group of offensive linemen he's worked with since being a Bengals offensive line coach. Pollack talked about the following linemen in Part One, Orlando Brown Jr., Jackson Carman, La'el Collins, Cody Ford, Jaxson Kirkland, and Jonah Williams, as all eyes will be on the battle at right tackle during training camp. This is a much watch for all Bengals fans as the veteran offensive line coach dives deep in talking about work in the trenches.
The end of OTAs and minicamps by the Cincinnati Bengals means the 2023 season will be here before we know it. Bengals offensive coordinator Brian Callahan returns to In The Trenches with Dave Lapham, presented by First Star Logistics, to explain how the offensive unit looked and more. In Part One, Callahan talks about new tight end Irv Smith Jr., drafted wide receivers Charlie Jones and Andrei Iosivas, the addition of Orland Brown Jr, and undrafted college free agent Jaxson Kirkland who has opened some eyes early, showing how much depth along the Bengals offensive line. Callahan and the Bengals coaching staff know there will be some hard cuts to make when they look to make a final roster before the Bengals open the season against the Cleveland Browns.
The picture is clear on how the Bengals' roster will shape out in the coming weeks and months. Rookies are fully settled into the confines of Paycor Stadium, the second phase of voluntary workouts are underway and organized team activities and mandatory minicamps are just about a month away. All of this means that the intensity and competition of the offseason is heating up. Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow and wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase are connecting again in practice. Now they'll look to replicate that same rhythm and connection with everyone else on the roster, including new faces. How will new faces like Charlie Jones, Trevor Siemian and Chase Brown fare with the rest of the veterans? Will undrafted rookies like Jaxson Kirkland have a real shot at making the roster? The Strictly Stripes crew sets the stage for how the rest of the offseason will play out all the way into training camp as workouts intensify. They go through the entire roster and do a 53-man reset. The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters, and Scott Eklund - went to the Dempsey Indoor to watch Washington's Pro Day. We've been to a lot of Pro Days over the years, and this one definitely felt low-key compared to some others. Jaxson Kirkland, Henry Bainivalu, Corey Luciano, Wayne Taulapapa, Jeremiah Martin, Cam Bright, Kristopher Moll, Alex Cook, Jordan Perryman, and Peyton Henry worked out in front of roughly 20 different scouts from NFL teams in the hopes of impressing them enough to earn interest either through the upcoming draft, or through free agency. After the workout, Kim, Chris, and Scott gave their thoughts on what they saw, as well as who else was there and their opinions on the draft potential of some of the players, specifically Jaxson Kirkland. After a quick break, we've included post-workout interviews with seven of the players who participated in everything from running the 40-yard dash to the vertical jump, to lifting to individual position drills to give the scouts an idea of how well the players can move. So you'll hear first from Jaxson Kirkland, then Henry Bainivalu, Corey Luciano, Wayne Taulapapa, Jeremiah Martin, Cam Bright, Kristopher Moll, Alex Cook, Jordan Perryman, and last - but certainly not least - Peyton Henry. The Washington Huskies football program is coming off an uncharacteristic 4-8 season in 2021. The Huskies' offense struggled to do much of anything while the defense couldn't stop a nosebleed. Things weren't much better with the Jimmy Lake drama, but the recently successful program has moved forward and looks to a brighter future under new offensive-minded head coach Kalen DeBoer. Joining DeBoer, who spent the last two seasons coaching the Fresno State Bulldogs, will be a cast of misfits including former Indiana quarterback Michael Penix, Jr. Washington will also be banking on guys like Jalen McMillan and Rome Odunze to build off successful freshman campaigns. There is also the intriguing storyline of whether or not Jaxson Kirkland can return to form at left tackle after a devastating injury a year ago. Defensively, it appears to be more of the same for the Huskies, and not in a good way. The defense has to cope with the losses of linebacker Jackson Sirmon and defensive backs Kyler Gordon and Trent McDuffie while returning a crew that largely underwhelmed in 2021. While there is some intriguing young talent on the defensive line with Vio Tunuufi and Faatui Tuitele returning, the defense will be largely based on what transfer linebacker Cam Bright can accomplish in his likely only season with the program, while a secondary of Alex Cook and Asa Turner hopes to rebound. How does all of this play into week six's game against our Arizona State Sun Devils football program? Don't count this is a guaranteed win, says host Richie Bradshaw, as we break down why the Washington Huskies football program could give the Sun Devils more fits than we'd like to see on this edition of the Locked On Sun Devils podcast. On Friday, new UW Head Coach Kalen DeBoer spoke in front of the media for the first time since the start of spring football, and there were plenty of updates. Former Washington Defensive Line Coach Randy Hart spoke to the team after practice, which is what DeBoer is referring to at the beginning of his media session. DeBoer went on to give updates on specific players, including Jaxson Kirkland and Emeka Megwa, as well as his thoughts as to how the team has done absorbing all the teaching that has taken place through the first two weeks of spring football. The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters, and Scott Eklund - recap what they saw from Day Five of UW Spring Football, held Friday inside a blustery Husky Stadium. And after practice, the media spoke with new head coach Kalen DeBoer for the first time since spring ball started. He hinted at the open practice, which is now officially scheduled for 11 am on Saturday, April 23, and also fielded questions about the quarterback battle, the status of Jaxson Kirkland (there is no change as of today), the news that Emeka Megwa will be out for months while he recovers from the injury he suffered in high school, and more. There were also a number of former player and coach sightings, as Danny Shelton was at practice in his UW letterman's jacket, and former UW Defensive Line Coach Randy Hart was also there. DeBoer noted that Hart addressed the team after practice. After a quick recruiting rundown, including the players that were spotted at Friday's practice, Kim also provided a quick hoops recruiting update. UW is in the process of hosting some potential transfers as they continue to remake their roster ahead of the 2022-23 season. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
The guys from Dawgman.com -- Scott Eklund, Chris Fetters and Kim Grinolds -- sit down on Saturday morning to chat about the tight ends and the offensive line as they head into spring practice later this month. Who winds up at left tackle? How will Scott Huff mix and match his group up front during the 15 practices which begin on March 30th? There are plenty of questions to answer along the offensive line which lost its defacto leader, Luke Wattenberg, to graduation and are still not sure if left tackle Jaxson Kirkland will be granted another year by the NCAA after declaring himself eligible for the NFL Draft, but then needing ankle surgery that will keep him out of action until at least the summer. At tight end, the Huskies lost Cade Otton to the NFL Draft, but they return several top prospects to fill his spot including Devin Culp, Jack Westover and Quentin Moore. How many tight ends will Washington run through their offense under Ryan Grubb? Where will they line up? In addition to those position questions, the guys also talk about Washington's first 2023 commit, Bakersfield (Ca.) RB Tybo Rogers, who chose the Huskies earlier this week and the National Preps College Showcase which will take place up in Marysville today. Learn more about your ad choices. This week is the week of the NFL Draft Combine, but we had so many other things to talk about, we never got there. We promise we will the next time. The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters, and Scott Eklund - catch up for a long chat about what they expect to see from Washington's new-look offense in spring, as well as the end of the men's basketball season and also some recruiting updates, as Scott is hitting a camp in California. To start the podcast, the guys flesh out their takes on their first three spring position previews that have already been published: Quarterback, Running Back, and Wide Receiver. How will everything look, who has the inside track at impressing, and who needs to show up? We even throw some offensive line talk to, especially with the thought that Jaxson Kirkland may return. That would throw a whole different kind of wrench in the works, and in a good way. After that, we pick out a handful of players featured in Scott's recent article about the 10 players that need to step up in spring. After a quick break to pay some bills, the talk turns to the end of the men's basketball season, the win over Oregon, and the fact that UW will have nine players walk for Senior Night against Oregon State. Will they all leave? Who might return? And then Scott provides a recruiting update, including the fact that he's attending the Under Armour camp at Mission Viejo High School on Sunday. Expect to see a lot of coverage on the UW prospects he spoke to at the camp! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Last season, because of the COVID-19 lockdowns, the Washington Huskies were unable to properly install their offense. Offensive coordinator John Donovan had a monumental task on his hands. From trying to bring along a quarterback with no college experience, to helping the entire group understand what the philosophy of the offense was and knowing what they wanted to get accomplished, meeting over Zoom was not an ideal situation for a new job. Now, as he prepares to start his first full season as Washington's offensive coordinator, Donovan has the luxury of sitting back and truly evaluating what he saw during fall camp over the past 25 days. He and the two players who were made available to the media on Tuesday -- Cade Otton and Jaxson Kirkland -- collectively said that things are much more polished than they were at this point last year and that while the offensive philosophy remains the same, they can now do different things out of formations than they were able to do last season. Donovan also commented on the progress of Dylan Morris and Sam Huard and what sets Richard Newton and Cameron Davis, the two co-starters in the backfield, apart from each other as well as what each brings to the table. Saturday's practice was the final open scrimmage of fall camp, and the Washington Huskies played it out like a real game was on the line. Led by quarterbacks Dylan Morris and Sam Huard, the offense came out victorious 34-17 in a day that was also noted by the breakout of redshirt freshman receiver Taj Davis. Davis, from Upland, Calif., took over for an injured Jalen McMillan to catch 13 passes for 197 yards, and the two quarterbacks combined unofficially for 455 yards, three passing touchdowns, and no interceptions. The guys from Dawgman.com - Chris Fetters, Scott Eklund, and intern Jack McCauley - dissect what they saw from the live scrimmage, starting with the offense, going position-by-position group, and then moving to the defense after a quick sponsor break. There were a number of starters that didn't play at all or played limited snaps - Jaxson Kirkland, Luke Wattenberg, Terrell Bynum, Trent McDuffie, and Kyler Gordon were the most notable - which meant opportunities for those right behind them in the depth. The Dawgman guys talked about those players that did step up, including some walk-ons on the defense (Mishael Powell, Ben Hines, and Drew Fowler). They also finish the podcast with their general takeaways and what the scrimmage means moving forward as the Huskies continue to work toward their September 4 game hosting Montana, 14 days from now. Washington left tackle Jaxson Kirkland meets with the media to provide his thoughts through the first week and a half of the 2021 fall camp.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Despite the absence of left tackle Jaxson Kirkland, the Washington offense was able to make their adjustments from a tough Sunday workout to impose themselves a little bit more on Day Four of fall camp. The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters, and Scott Eklund - talked about the bounce-back effort from the offense, including a great drive during the field team period, led by Dylan Morris, that ended up with a 5-yard touchdown to a wide-open Cade Otton. Richard Newton and Cameron Davis were the two running backs used in that series, but all the of backs had turns Monday to impress. The Dawgman guys talked about the offensive line shuffle due to Kirkland's absence (doesn't sound like anything serious), and how Troy Fautanu did as the number-one left tackle, followed by freshman Roger Rosengarten backing him up. They also talked about the improvement of the receivers from Sunday, and who is starting to make some waves behind the first team, including Sawyer Racanelli, Taj Davis, Ja'Lynn Polk, and Giles Jackson, who caught a 27-yard pass from Patrick O'Brien. Moving to the defensive side, it was all about mixing and matching some position groups, especially at outside linebacker. Cooper McDonald was paired with Bralen Trice, Ryan Bowman and Sav'ell Smalls were matched together, and Jordan Lolohea and Jeremiah Martin also made up a pairing that OLB Coach Ikaika Malloe used to great effect on Monday. True frosh Voi Tunuufi had a tackle for loss during the final team period, and we also saw more three-DL sets with Tuli Letuligasenoa, Sam Taimani, and Faatui Tuitele involved. Generally, there was a lot of back and forth during the final team period. There was just the one touchdown throw to Otton from Morris, and only one interception, which came from Dominique Hampton, who got shaken up on the play but still came up with the ball. Tuesday is Pac-12 Media Day, and Dawgman.com's Kim Grinolds is in Los Angeles to take part. Before the Huskies that are there - Head Coach Jimmy Lake, Offensive Tackle Jaxson Kirkland, and Defensive Back Trent McDuffie - were put in front of the general media, Grinolds got some time to exclusively speak to all of them. Next up, Washington Offensive Tackle Jaxson Kirkland! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
University of Washington offensive lineman Jaxson Kirkland sat down with Jake Scott & Patrick Kinahan at Pac-12 Media Day.
Zion Tupuola-Fetui may be out for a while, but you can't switch off his competitive nature. The outside linebacker was rolling around Wednesday's practice on a scooter for his left leg, recently repaired after an Achilles rupture, but his voice certainly wasn't hurt. After calling out guys during a 1-1 session between the offensive and defensive lines, walk-on OL Gage Harty had heard enough from ZTF. "Watch out, or I'm gonna come over and kick your wheel!" Harty said, laughing. The verbal sparring definitely spilled over to the field, as the guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters, and Scott Eklund - ran down the different situations that highlighted Day 13 of Washington's spring football campaign. As per usual, UW Head Coach Jimmy Lake put the team into some unusual situations; second and goal from the 4-yard line with 4 seconds left, down 8. Only one of the quarterbacks was able to get a touchdown and a 2-point conversion - Sam Huard. There was also situations coming out of the end zone that led the defense to win via a safety. But it was the red zone lock out at the end where the energy was bumped up way past 10. The defense ended up winning the period 20-15, but Huard was one completed pass away from spoiling the defense's mood for the day. The Dawgman guys talked about the quarterback battle between Dylan Morris and Patrick O'Brien, as well as Huard slowing coming up for air after having been underwater for most of spring. Talked turned to the defense and some of the standout performances, including those who had interceptions on the day; Kyler Gordon, James Smith, Jacobe Covington, and two picks by Brendan Radley-Hiles, who took one to the house while backup center Corey Luciano chased him all the way. They also talked about Saturday's spring game, one where the fans should expect an actual game to break out. How refreshing! Cade Otton will captain the Purple team, while Jaxson Kirkland will captain the Gold team. The teams have been split up via draft, so hopefully, we'll get a roster we can share with you on game day. Finally, the guys talk about the 2021 NFL Draft, which starts Thursday, and their opinions on where the four Huskies - Levi Onwuzurike, Joe Tryon, Elijah Molden, and Keith Taylor - will get drafted.
