In this episode of Seeing Them Live, host Charles Berman interviews Giuliana Funkhauser, a transdisciplinary artist known for her innovative blend of digital code and synthesized audio to create immersive art installations. Giuliana, based on the U.S. East Coast, completed her graduate studies at the San Francisco Art Institute, concentrating on art and technology, with a particular interest in sound synthesis. Besides her artistic endeavors, she teaches courses on data sonification and video game development. Her collaborative projects include working with musical artist Elizabeth Verosa and visual artist Alison Tannenhaus, performing excerpts from their EP '2021' in events such as the 2022 New England Synthesizer Festival. Additionally, Verosa and Funkhauser's track is featured in the Rewoven Transmissions collection, a remix of Cathode Raytube's works.Giuliana's shares how she got introduced to music and her unique concert experiences, ranging from middle school outings to witnessing legendary bands like Everclear, Judas Priest, and Iggy Pop. She recounts attending the Radio 104 Fest and vividly describes how Everclear was not her favorite but ended up being the main act she saw due to time restrictions. A humorous and memorable moment emerges from a misunderstanding that led to her attending a performance by Mono of Japan instead of the expected European band Mono, a life-changing encounter that profoundly influenced her musical tastesGiuliana also narrates her experiences at the Halloween Industrial Music Fest during Hurricane Sandy, where she saw numerous notable acts like Author & Punisher and Theologian in an incredibly intense, weather-challenged environment. Her story culminates in recounting the remarkable Sunn O show, a visceral and intense performance where the sheer power of the sound and visuals led to a memorable audience connection.Throughout the discussion, Giuliana elaborates on her creative process, revealing how she and her collaborators use data sonification and visual cues to guide their live performances and improvisations. Listeners are invited to explore Giuliana's work further on her website gfunkhouser.com and through various platforms like Bandcamp that feature her recordings.BANDS: Animals, Author and Punisher, Big Brave, Bohemia, Butthole Surfers, Candlebox, Cathode Ray Tube, Cracker, David Linton, Dead Voices on Air, Dear Woman, Dishwalla, Everclear, Flock of Seagulls, Freeze Pop, Go Go's, Harpy, Iggy pop, Inkanti, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, King Gizzard, Lady Purge, Local H, Lush, Mogwai, Mono, Otto von Schirach, Police, Semisonic, Snowbeasts, Stabbing Westward, Sunn, The Pretenders, Theologian, Tony the Floyd Dementia, Uriah HeepVENUES: Club X, Radio 104 Fest PATREON:https://www.patreon.com/SeeingThemLivePlease help us defer the cost of producing this podcast by making a donation on Patreon.WEBSITE:https://seeingthemlive.com/Visit the Seeing Them Live website for bonus materials including the show blog, resource links for concert buffs, photos, materials related to our episodes, and our Ticket Stub Museum.INSTAGRAM:https://www.instagram.com/seeingthemlive/FACEBOOK:https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61550090670708

Picture by Christina Liu @ The LonelyEyelid For decades, no centuries has mankind been dreaming of creating a symbiosis between man and machine - and music wise it might be said that no one has ever come as close to that symbiosis as Tristan Shone aka Author & Punisher. He has been developing machines for more than 15 years which enable him to create a sound that is industrial but man made, harsh yet melodic, shoegazey and metallic! And on his last album Krüller (check out our review of that miraculous record) he has taken another huge leap towards the sound that he himself envisioned years ago. And yes, that sound is addictive as one can see by looking at all the AOTY lists including Krüller! Of course there are loads of things we could talk about with Tristan, the development of his machines, his love for Portishead, the momentary stage of his pursuit for his sound, the development of his own company but of course we still talk a lot about Krüller - also where the name for the record comes from! And we find out a tidbit about his passion for football (or soccer for our American friends)! Enjoy the interview, folks!
On this episode we talk about albums from Puce Mary, Author & Punisher, Nyx Division, Kota Kira, Ductape, and iVardensphere, as well as some of the Ukrainian benefit albums currently out and Ukrainian bands.
We return to the world of metal and beer (and hangovers) as Sam Riggins guides us through his journey from Nebraska Brewing Co. to running his own brewery, Cosmic Eye. After a quick review of the Yob residency at Saint Vitus, Dylan and Sam delve into all manner of things heavy and carbonated, including a shitty Kill 'Em All cassette, how ze lager bier won him over from Busch Light, standing apart from other breweries, deaths and rises in the craft beer scene, collab beer pride, when Wake Brewing fixed their toilet, and geek out over the new Author & Punisher. If you're in the Lincoln, NE area, check out Cosmic Eye Brewing and be sure to give 'em a follow on Instagram!
Hi people Chilli here bringing you my latest review on the intense industrial drone metal one man band Author & Punisher with their latest album Krüller. Serving as one of the best live acts I have seen, I am keen to give my verdict on the album and see if it holds up to their last album Beastland. Tune in to hear my thoughts and hear how they go on the spicy scale. As life on Earth once again reaffirms that we are in the Kali Yuga, Terminus lingers on to observe and record the trajectory of the downfall. Our intro segment tonight is a double-header of great records that couldn't be further apart. TBMG brings on the new demo by Serpent Dweller, which shows the young band consolidating and improving their sound from the first demo dramatically with a bit of outlaw rock flair and more involved lead guitar concepts. TDMG brings the latest record by RazorRape, whose chunky yet nimble bloodsoaked deathgrind will likely be a favorite of any who appreciated the 200 Stab Wounds record we enjoyed so much last year. Onto the main show: first is the new record by Author & Punisher, which shows the project exploring new layers of melody and dynamics across its expanse of sandblasted, sub-bass-heavy distortion. TBMG's background in industrial and punk is an asset here, helping to untangle the web of influences behind this work which may be unfamiliar to most metalheads, while TDMG wears cool sunglasses and stares across the desert wastes in a single-armed leather jacket. Concluding the episode is the debut record of Kampfeswut, a band which merges the stomping, oi-infused black metal of Absurd with a dizzying array of folk instruments and melodies. The effect is something with depth but immediate satisfaction- Teutonic tradition crosses paths with pyrotechnic melodeath-infused riffing in a new interpretation of what "fun" black metal can really be. Stick around for this one- Terminators of all stripes will appreciate it. 0:00:00 - Intro 0:07:51 - Serpent Dweller - Demo II (Independent) 0:27:59 - RazorRape - Fucked Beyond Recognition (Morbid Generation Records) 0:47:29 - Author & Punisher - Krüller (Relapse Records) 1:37:14 - Interlude - Youth Code - “For I Am Cursed” fr. Since 2003, Phil Sgrosso has been a very busy man. Not only is he the chief songwriter for Grammy-nominated metal giants As I Lay Dying, he also serves as a guitarist in such varied bands as Saosin, Author & Punisher, Wovenwar, and Poison Headache. He's proven his talent many times over crossing genres back and forth while contributing what is necessary to make each band shine in their own right. His latest endeavor is a solo project in which he in control of everything - from the guitars to the drums to the electronic elements. I've had the pleasure of knowing Phil since his addition to As I Lay Dying back in 2003. We don't get to talk too often - mainly just when he's in town on tour. I was very excited to get to sit down and talk with him about his new project Apathian and everything else he's up to these days. Tune in and listen to us chat about mainly music, some movies, and other things like who his favorite superhero is. He also talks about what's going on with As I Lay Dying and picking up the guitar for the band he's been managing for a few years - Author & Punisher. “Industrial Music” started out back in the 70’s as a mixture of harsh electronics, confrontation and punk transgression. As time went on, Industrial Music became a “style” instead of a “statement.”Every now and then, a true innovator comes along that raises the bar of creativity. Tristan Shone, the man behind the industrial juggernaut Author + Punisher is one such innovator. In a sense, he has picked up where originators like Throbbing Gristle, Z’ev and Mark Pauline (Survival Research Labs) left off. True, Mark Pauline is not a musician, but his version of performance art undoubtedly informs Tristan’s work.Tristan and I met up before his appearance at The Market Hotel out in the wilds of Bushwick, NY.Check out “Beastland” the new full-length by Author + Punisher available on Relapse Records. Also, if you aren’t familiar with any of the artists I mentioned above, please check them out.Intro: “Night Terror” – Author+Punisher off of “Beastland”Outro: “Nazarene” – Author+Punisher off of “Beastland” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
It's Christmas! so, this time, we're irking the Daily Mail readers by actually not doing much to do with Christmas at all (Let's call it a Winterval special just to annoy them even more!). It's our end of the year best of 2018 spectacular! We'll be counting down our favourite 30 songs of the year, plus discussing our favourite gigs of the year and also music we've discovered this year which didn't come out in 2018. To explain how the voting works, we each picked our 10 favourite songs of the year, then for each list we each ranked them 1-10 giving 10 points to our favourite and 1 to the one we liked least on each list. we also had a bonus point we could assign to one song on either of the other people's lists (So Colin could only assign the bonus point to a song on either Tracey or Ian's list). Colin's wife then added all the points up and we didn't find out the order until we were recording, so all the reactions you'll hear are genuine. Now admittedly, we are a little bit brutal to some of the songs on the list, but please remember that to be in the episode they have to have been in one of our top tens of the year! Bands featured in this episode include Anaal Nathrakh, АИГЕЛ, The Atlas Moth, Author & Punisher, Big Russian Boss, Brooke Bentham, Church Of The Cosmic Skull, Clever Girl, The Common Cold, Corrosion Of Conformity, Dresden Dolls, Eels, Brian Eno/Kevin Shields, Epic45, Failure, Forest Swords, Four Stroke Baron, Gene, Ghost, Grouper, Half Man Half Biscuit, Ho99o9, Khruangbin, Laibach, Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks, Metric, Malcolm Middleton, Mogwai, Neurosis, Pale Waves, Peaness, Josh T.
