PVSP and Outer Roses get back together to follow up on their 2023 season predictions. As most know, the 2023 season was far under most people's expectations for the Timbers so most of the predictions are wildly incorrect (and shots might be consumed as punishment).  After defending some of their decisions, they move onto the 2024 season and some bold predictions are made based on they hype surrounding Phil Neville's arrival. Stay tuned for a mid season check in pod this year with PVSP and Outer Roses. Russian Circles/Memorial (feat. Achtbaanritjes. Het weekend. Je favoriete boek of film. Slayer. Vakantie. Het leven. De aarde. Alle goede dingen zijn eindig. Alle slechte dingen ook, overigens. Dus Osmium evenzo. Is alles gezegd? Dus Osmium evenzo. Althans, voorlopig. In 1997 The VSS travelled around Europe on the 'Nervous Circuits' tour. Seeing them play here was a total eye opener for me as a teenager. I was interested to know his perspective on touring the UK at that time and seeing the bands here like BOB TILTON / BABY HARP SEAL / STALINGRAD / HARD TO SWALLOW / KITO / EBOLA & RED MONKEY. This is the focus of the first bit of talk before a live VSS track leading into a section about ANGEL HAIR & GRAVITY records. There's a great chunk on this with lots of stories and facts I'd never heard before. The ANGEL HAIR track leads into more philosophical reflections on punk/hardcore & culture. Once again it's Album of the Month time and for August it was a little crazy. We had a pick, or not, and then had another, or not, then we put it to a vote to decide once and for all. In the end Gnosis from Russian Circles (Sargent House) ended up getting the most votes, and for good reason. The usual gang of suspects are present for the discussion as well as MC Supreme Buke. Much is made of just how good Russian Circles' brand of post-instrumetal still is this far along and elsewhere the gang spends a good portion of the runtime gushing over everything else they listened to since they last got together. That and the usual banter back and forth on literally anything and everything. In other words, just another episode of the Nine Circles Audio Thing.9C LINKS: Website | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram

This intro was a bit longer and I feel like I didn't necessarily do the subject justice. But I'll just keep trying to improve! Toki has made a new bed near my recording desk and has been present for all of the making of this episode. This week we are very honored to welcome innovative musician, righteous guitarist, and legit-ass human Nick Reinhart to the hall of discussion. You might know Nick from his band Tera Melos who were label and touring mates of RX during our Sargent House days, or you might know him from his more current projects such as Disheveled Cuss, Undo K From Hot, or Vertical Scratchers. Nick has a very hefty and droppable list of names of bands and musicians he's played with including playing with Best Coast on late night tv performances and jamming with various indie and mainstream legends. All the while, Nick maintains his authentic and vibrantly stoic vibe while always asking questions of how we listen to music. In this conversation we talk about burritos, Nick's sonic inspirations, home studio setups, whether or not we'd make music for a McDonals commercials, over stuffing guitar racks and pedal shelving and lots more! We Left a Note with an Apology draws from a wide music palate, folk tradition, country storytelling, krautrock with moments of sludgy distortion that transport the listener to a series of moments in Brian's life. Our conversation also touches on the construction of the album, how Sargent House became involved in the release, social unrest, closing on a short discussion about recent Russian Circles brewery and coffee roaster collaborations. Brian created an exceptional playlist to accompany this episode that we've been digging since our conversation. Listen to the playlist HERE. Here's Brian's description of the playlist:  "A few weeks back I did a playlist of stuff that influenced the Torment & Glory (or stuff that I was listening to a lot while working on it) so I tried to make this one not have much/any stylistic overlap. So this one is basically starts with Dead Kennedys' "Terminal Preppie" cuz that was my gateway drug into punk, then kinda takes off into a bunch of weird punk stuff, fringe hardcore, art punk, krautrock, old school funk, dark drone, death metal, black metal, gloomy electronic stuff, guitar/savvy indie stuff, and a little wind-down with some jazz." No doubt you know how this works by now...team members take turns picking their favorite album from a given month and for August 2021, it was a shoe in for Deafheaven's Infinite Granite (Sargent House) across the board. And, while no one on staff disagreed, not everyone was on the exact same page. Since 2010, Deafheaven have yet to make the same album twice or even close to the same album. The way they transition from black metal to shoegaze has made them critical darlings of a controversy that can never quite get its controversy correct. And now that they've gone full on shoegaze, the internet will never be the same. So it seems. The gang covers Infinite Granite and just how different it is as well as how much it rules, the fact that this might well be their "Opeth" moment, lyrics and how good George Clarke is in writing them as well as their impact over the years with certain team members, spooky season, a huge set of birthdays, and, as always, what else tripped our triggers during the month of August 2021 which features lengthy segments on both BTBAM's Colors II and WITTR's Primordial Arcana, obviously. So, do have a pen and paper on hand. All this and so much more as we dive head first into our eighth AOTM for 2021!  So jump in and get an earful!9C LINKS: Website | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram

Poet, artist, and Daughters vocalist Alexis Marshall has announced his solo debut LP HOUSE OF LULL. HOUSE OF WHEN for July 23rd via Sargent House and along with it the first song and video for “Hounds In The Abyss”. Directed by Jeremy W., Marshall notes of the video's concept “The long stare into the room of self—the universe's middle distance—the many hidden doors we locate, the many rooms we find. Populated not only by whom else we are, but by places, we have been. The places we are. We don't always pull away from the hot stove.”' Produced by Seth Manchester the album is crafted around moments of spontaneity and sonic detritus. For the album, Marshall brought together an impressive group of collaborators to execute his vision, a vision that for the first time was under his full creative direction. Jon Syverson (Daughters), Kristin Hayter (Lingua Ignota), Evan Patterson (Jaye Jayle, Young Widows) joined Marshall in Pawtucket, Rhode Island at Machines with Magnets studio with no material. The strategy was to embrace new sounds, employ the element of chance, and capture the creative process in a song format. The genesis of a song could be anything—a fragmented piano line, a drum pattern—but the impetus was often a non-musical sound. Marshall sourced a lot of his textural contributions from a hardware store all contributing to a proto-industrial rattle-and-rumble reminiscent of early Einstürzende Neubaten. The resulting material stands to be the boldest and exciting work of his career. If someone sees your video on YouTube or hears your music on Spotify, they Google you and your website comes up. From there, you can capture their attention and engage them with your music and your brand. Artists tend to undervalue the power of websites just as much as mailing lists. Facebook is not a website. Bandcamp is not a website. Fans want a one-stop shop where they can listen to your music, watch your videos, learn about upcoming shows, and find out more about you. The easier it is to find you, the easier it is to follow you. Creating and maintaining a proper website isn't just for your fans, either. One of the ultimate aims of this podcast is to introduce lesser known bands to a new audience, which is why we're all pretty chuffed to be doing This is the Third Album of a Band Called Adebisi Shank by Adebisi Shank. Hailing from Wexford in Ireland, Adebisi Shank were a band for about 8 years, and in that time released three albums and one EP. Throughout their life, they were able to release music on some cool labels (Big Scary Monsters, Richter Collective, Sargent House) and tour a whole bunch with great bands. Their music is often classed as “math rock” and whilst they occasionally took issue with that, it's probably the closest genre to place these guys in. For a three piece, they made a tremendous racket, and made, we think, some of the craziest, catchiest pseudo-instrumental math rock that you can possibly imagine. Indeed, this, their final album, is their true zenith. It combines all the math rock time signature instrumental madness with a real sense of joyful abandon, coupled with ridiculous guitar and bass tones, awesome drum sounds and some appropriate robotic vocals. Most of all though, this album is just pure fun. Like, really really fun. It's quite over the top in places but it all works. It's carefree. Exuberant, even. In this episode we talk about that at length. We also talk about the rest of the band's catalogue and why they never once fall into the self serious overplayed nonsense that a lot of math rock falls into. More folk need to listen to this band and we think it absolutely is an unsung classic. Agree? Disagree? Vote below.

As an artist your career will last your lifetime, at least that should be the plan. And what you study in school may not always be what you do all the time. New opportunities come up, new technologies are developed, sometimes you find out that you are good at something you never even thought of. On this episode of Creative Mind, Bobby Brill talks with Aaron Guadamuz – he is a musician, stop motion artist, animator, curator and technologist if we can be so bold. In short Aaron is a working artist, and an artist working in the contemporary art scene as well. That hard to understand often frustrating world of art that few people like and even fewer “get” right now. Aaron Guadamuz is a Bay Area native, illustrator, animator, musician, photographer and handyman who lives and works in San Francisco, CA. He has worked closely with a number companies, organizations, and record labels including the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, Trouper Films, Sega of America, Sony, Namco, Napster, Stones Throw, Sargent House and Insect Records. Jimmy Buffett [01:17] "Dallas" A1A ABC Dunhill DSD-50183 1974 Still the decent country-oriented Buffett. This one was penned by the Coral Reefer's guitarist Roger Bartlett. Made it to number 25 on the Billboard 200. Darryl Hall & John Oates [04:42] "She's Gone" Abandoned Luncheonette Atlantic Records SD 7269 1973 To be honest, I really like "Las Vegas Turnaround", the track that precedes "She's Gone" but sometimes you just have to go with the hits. It's possible that somewhere out there in listener land, there is someone who has never heard "She's Gone". Hit #33 on the charts and turned platinum 29 years after its release. ABBA [10:09] "SOS" ABBA Atlantic Records SD 18146 1975 Too many tracks to choose from! I almost went with "Hey Hey Helen" but in the I had to send for help. While the album only just dented the Billboard 200 reaching #174, as a single "SOS" made it to #15 on the Hot 100. Count Basie Orchestra [13:31] "Jumpin' at the Woodside" The ABC Collection ABC Records AC-30004 1976 A 1976 reissue of Count Basie's 1969 Dot Records release Standing Ovation, recorded at the Tropicana in Las Vegas. Chelsea Wolfe [18:49] "Crazy Love" Abyss Sargent House SH141 2015 Continuing her evolution, this is one of the more brooding tracks from this excellent Sargent House release. This was also the first Chelsea Wolfe album to chart, making it up to #130. I'll also take this opportunity to let interested parties know that if you have the opportunity to see Chelsea Wolfe live, you should do it. Kiss [22:21] "New York Groove" Ace Frehley Casablanca Records NBLP 7121 1978 Back in the New York Groove, backed by such NY session musicians as Anton Fig and Will Lee. Of course this album made it well into the Billboard 200, peaking out at 26. It was also certified platinum a month after its release. Of course this is in the pre-Soundscan days, so that just meant that 1,000,000 copies of the album were shipped out, which explains why I picked up this remaindered copy for $1. Luke Sweeney [25:29] "Sympathy for the Night" Adventure: Us Aerobic International 2014 Speaking of grooves, this track by Bay Area musican Luke Sweeney has a very solid one. Nilsson [28:30] "One" Aerial Ballet RCA Victor LSP-3956 1968 Again, so many great songs to choose from, some of which we'll hear as we progress through the season, but I decided to go with this "One" ^.^ While this track failed to chart as a single, a year later Three Dog Night would take their rendition all the way up to number 5 on the Hot 100. Havens, Richie [32:45] "To Give All Your Love Away" Alarm Clock Stormy Forest SFS 6005 1971 A vert solid jam from Ritchie Haven's most successful album, featuring Rick Derringer on electric guitar. Monty Python [35:37] "Constitutional Peasants" Album to the Soundtrack of the Trailer of the Film of Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Executive Version Arista AB 4050 1975 Seems relevant. Alison Moyet [38:37] "Honey for Bees" Alf Columbia Records BFC 39956 1984 A solo outing from the vocal powerhouse half of Yaz, produced by early 80s mega producers Jolley & Swain. Patti Austin covered this song as a single a year later and took it into the top dance club singles. Moev [42:48] "Alibis" Alibis Nettwerk 12 NTWK 11 1984 I had almost forgotten about this Canadian synth pop outfit. I had their album Yeah, Whatever once upon a time as a cassette, and then this 12" single recently made it into my collection. Hakuna matata. The She’s [49:22] "Eva's Interlude/Anywhere But Here" All Female Rock and Roll Quartet Empty Cellar Records EMP 034 2017 Great band, great album, and a great interlude! The vinyl release has a fantastic bookley featuring artwork by women who inspire the band. Earth, Wind & Fire [54:24] "Magic Mind" All n’ All Columbia Records 34905 1977 Yet still even more hot stuff from Earth Wind & Fire. The gents made it all the way up to number 3 on the album charts and went on to go triple platinum. Diana Ross [58:09] "Upside Down" All the Great Hits Motown M13-960C2 1981 Defintely enjoying the handywork of Chic's Nile Rodger and Bernard Edwards on this late-disco classic. Sarah Vaughan [01:02:15] "It's Delovely" All Time Favorites Mercury Wing MGW 12123 1965 Two great classics that taste great together. I'm talking about Sarah Vaughan and Cole Porter. #78: Chelsea Wolfe - "Macro Vs. Micro + On Her New Album Hiss Spun"

“What I want is to open up. I want to know what's inside me. I want everybody to open up. I'm like an imbecile with a can opener in his hand, wondering where to begin—to open up the earth. I know that underneath the mess everything is marvelous. I'm sure of it.” - Henry Miller Digging beneath the mess of the world to find the beauty underneath is perhaps the most consistent theme in Chelsea Wolfe’s expansive discography—a theme that ties together her ceaseless explorations in unorthodox textures, haunting melodies, and mining the grandeur embedded within ugliness and pain. With her sixth official album Hiss Spun, Wolfe adopts Miller’s quest to become empowered by embracing the mess of the self, to control the tumult of the soul in hopes of reigning in the chaos of the world around us. “I wanted to write some sort of escapist music; songs that were just about being in your body, and getting free,” Wolfe says of the album before extrapolating on the broader scope of her new collection of songs. “You’re just bombarded with constant bad news, people getting fucked over and killed for shitty reasons or for no reason at all, and it seems like the world has been in tears for months, and then you remember it’s been fucked for a long time, it’s been fucked since the beginning. It’s overwhelming and I have to write about it.” Hiss Spun was recorded by Kurt Ballou in Salem, Massachusetts at the tail end of winter 2017 against a backdrop of deathly quiet snow-blanketed streets and the hissing radiators of warm interiors. While past albums operated on the intimacy of stripped-down folkmusic (The Grime and the Glow, Unknown Rooms), or the throbbing pulse of supplemental electronics (Pain Is Beauty, Abyss), Wolfe’s latest offering wrings its exquisiteness out of a palette of groaning bass, pounding drums, and crunching distortion. It’s an album that inadvertently drew part of its aura from the cold white of the New England winter, though the flesh-and-bone of the material was culled from upheavals in Wolfe’s personal life, and coming to terms with years of vulnerability, anger, self-destruction, and dark family history. Aside from adding low-end heft with gratuitous slabs of fuzz bass, longtime collaborator Ben Chisholm contributed harrowing swaths of sound collages from sources surrounding the artist and her band in recent years—the rumble of street construction at a tour stop in Prague, the howl of a coyote outside Wolfe’s rural house in California, the scrape of machinery on the floor of a warehouse at a down-and-out friend’s workplace. Music is rendered out of dissonance—bomb blasts from the Enola Gay, the shriek of primates, the fluttering pages of a Walt Whitman book are manipulated and seamlessly integrated into the feral and forlorn songs of Hiss Spun. The album opens with the sickening bang of “Spun”, where a lurching bottom-heavy riff provided by Chisholm and Troy Van Leeuwen (Queens of the Stone Age, Failure) serves as a foundation to a sultry mantra of fever-dream longing and desire. The first third of Hiss Spun—whether it’s the ominous twang and cataclysmic dynamics of “16 Psyche”, the icy keyboard lines, restless pulse and harrowing bellows of Aaron Turner (Old Man Gloom, SUMAC) on “Vex”, or the patient repetition and devastating choruses of “The Culling—all carry the weight of desperation, lost love, and withdrawal. Wolfe’s introspection and existential dread turns outwards to the crumbling world around us with “Particle Flux”, an examination of the casualties of war set against an aural sea of static. White noise is a constant thread through Hiss Spun, with Wolfe finding solace in the knowledge that radio static is the sound of the universe expanding outwards from the Big Bang—a reminder that even dissonance has ties to creation. The electronic thump of “Offering” serves as an ode to the Salton Sea and the encroaching calamities stemming from climate change. The obsession with white noise and global destruction carries over into “Static Hum”, where the merciless percussive battery of Wolfe’s former bandmateand current drummer Jess Gowrie helps deliver the dire weight of a sonnet dedicated to a “burning planet.” By the time the album closes with “Scrape”, Wolfe has come full circle and turned her examinations back inward, reflecting over her own mortality with arguably the most commanding vocal performance in her entire oeuvre. “The album is cyclical, like me and my moods,” Wolfe says of Hiss Spun. “Cycles, obsession, spinning, centrifugal force—all with gut feelings as the center of the self.” And it’s an album that Wolfe sees as a kind of exorcism. “I’m at odds with myself… I got tired of trying to disappear. The record became very personal in that way. I wanted to open up more, but also create my own reality.” Every Chelsea Wolfe album is cathartic, but never before has both the artist and her audience so desperately needed this kind of emotional purging. Sargent House is proud to release Hiss Spun to the world on September 22nd, 2017. Ape List #5 – Grrrl Power !
