Talk Talk is an interesting band. Their musical style evolved significantly over time, moving from synth-pop to a more experimental art rock and post-rock sound, particularly with the albums 'Spirit of Eden' and 'Laughing Stock'. I like every phase of their career but I especially love the album 'Spirit of Eden'. Those last two albums have grown in stature and influence over the decades, inspiring countless musicians with their innovative use of space, silence, and unconventional song structures. It's no wonder that an ambient focused person like me would glom onto Talk Talk when you consider band leader, Mark Hollis's often-quoted sentiment about the importance of silence in music – "Before you play two notes, learn how to play one note... and don't play one note unless you've got a reason to". Recently a favorite podcast of mine, Discord & Rhyme, dedicated an episode to 'Spirit of Eden'. It's totally worth a listen. You can find here - https://discordpod.com/listen/155-talk-talk-spirit-of-eden-1988 After listening to that episode I decided to make a mix of tracks with a 'Spirit of Eden' feel. I used a few tracks recommended by the guys in the podcast - Bark Psychosis, Van Morrison, and Mile Davis. And combined those with 7 other cuts that fit the vibe. I always knew that Rain Tree Crow/Sylvian/Jansen/Barbieri would be a perfect fit. I was excited to use one of my favorite albums of 2022 - 'The Great Awakening' by Shearwater. I had forgotten how much I love that record. Are there any Talk Talk fans out there? What do you think of this collection of Talk Talk inspired tunes? Cheers!   T R A C K L I S T : 00:00   Steve Jansen & Richard Barbieri - Mother London (Stone To Flesh 1995) 05:52   Phil Clemo - Maze (Through the Wave of Blue 2024) 11:07   Bark Psychosis - Street Scene (Hex 1994) 16:20   Van Morrison - When Heart Is Open (Common One 1980) 22:33   Rain Tree Crow - Blackwater (Rain Tree Crow 1991) 26:44   Shearwater - No Reason (The Great Awakening 2022) 32:00   Tuxedomoon & Cult With No Name - Do It For Van Gogh (Blue Velvet Revisited 2016) 36:18   The Blue Nile - From a Late Night Train (Hats 1989) 40:01   Bed - The Whimps (The Newton Plum 2001) 43:10   Miles Davis - He Loved Him Madly (Get Up With It 1974) 62:37   end

What happens if you combine Crystal Castles, Bark Psychosis, Claude Young, L.S.G, Daft Punk, Tiësto and Deftones? You get ‘End Of Sleep' by Baby Blue!Sophia Briggs is the mind behind an album that really peaked our interest earlier this year - a sort of mid-90's trance dream shot through the nightmare of the beginning of the start of the pandemic in 2020. After sharing some laughs over an Alanis Morisette comparison and having our interest peaked even further after discovering the album is constructed of no less than 500 samples, we new we had to invite Sophia on the show, which she kindly accepted!Over the course of this interview, we discuss Sofia's early years, getting into DJing, the Canadian music scene and her involvement in running the party s.M.i.L.e. We then move onto Sofia's relationship with Planet Euphorique, the story behind ‘End Of Sleep', her approach to sampling, production techniques and her vast pool of influences, from the likes of Detroit masters such as Claude Young and John Beltran, mid 90-s & early 2000's Tresor records, Trance, Electro and Electro Clash. We finish by discussing Sofia's plans for the future and some of her favourite current music, which you can support via the Buy Music Club link below. Special thanks to Sofia Briggs and Planet Euphorique for allowing the use of clips from ‘Lineman' and ‘Plastic Glass Wall' at the beginning and end of this episode.—SUPPORT BABY BLUE:‘End of Sleep': https://planeteuphorique.bandcamp.com/album/end-of-sleepInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/baby__blue_/Bandcamp: https://babybluelovesyou.bandcamp.com---SUPPORT ARTISTS HIGHLIGHTED IN THIS PODCAST: https://buymusic.club/list/awakeallhours-insights-015-baby-blue---SUPPORT AWAKE ALL HOURS: Patreon: www.patreon.com/awakeallhoursSoundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/awk-all-hrs?utm_source=clipboard&utm_medium=text&utm_campaign=social_sharing Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/awake.allhours/

For episode 12, Brian had the opportunity to speak to Christopher Porter, the primary creative force behind indie pop act Veronica Lake and co-founder of Audrey's Diary. Founded in metro Detroit in the early 90s, Audrey's Diary had a very brief run of 6 releases, each holding a place in the pantheon of American independent, space and dream pop. For those of you wondering about the importance of Audrey's Diary on today's music, 2 tracks released by the Audrey's Diary were featured on the epic Southeast of Saturn compilation released on Third Man Records in 2020. As an art project, Audrey's Diary has had an influence on independent music in a far more reaching way than Christopher is willing to admit.Featuring the likes Black Tambourine (Pam Berry, Archie Moore and Brian Nelson of Velocity Girl and Mike Schulman of Slumberland Records), this supergroup of sorts kicked off the label with the classic “Throw Aggi From The Bridge”. Brian and Christopher, now a journalist and writer, step through each of the Audrey's Diary releases exploring them in great detail. The final release was a fanzine, Emily's #777, an ode to the likes of Sarah Records featuring a 7” with music by Bark Psychosis, Jessamine and Buddah on the Moon.If you have never heard any of the Audrey's Diary releases or are just curious about this important independent American indie label, this interview is a treat. For fans of the label, this episode is somewhat of a love letter to those who loved the work of Christopher and Audrey's Diary. A key theme of this interview was best put by Christopher when he said “never stop making music with your friends”.

Jeanette Leech is a writer, researcher, DJ, and music historian who contributes regularly to magazines including Folk Roots and Shindig! Jeanette Leech is talking about her latest book, 'Fearless: The Making of Post Rock', with David Eastaugh   In 1994, the music critic Simon Reynolds coined a new term: post-rock. It was an attempt to give a narrative to music that used the tools of rock but did something utterly different with it, broadening its scope by fusing elements of punk, dub, electronic music, minimalism, and more into something wholly new. Post-rock is an anti-genre, impossible to fence in. Elevating texture over riff and ambiance over traditional rock hierarchies, its exponents used ideas of space and deconstruction to create music of enormous power. From Slint to Talk Talk, Bark Psychosis to Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Tortoise to Fridge, Mogwai to Sigur Ros, the pioneers of post-rock are unified by an open-minded ambition that has proven hugely influential on everything from mainstream rock records to Hollywood soundtracks and beyond. 'The doors were blown open for me on everything, says Kieran Hebden (Fridge/Four Tet). 'I didn t think in terms of genre almost ever again. Drawing on dozens of new interviews and packed full of stories never before told, FEARLESS explores how the strands of post-rock entwined, frayed, and created one of the most diverse bodies of music ever to huddle under one name.

Shock World Service 053 Obelisk High by Chequerboard 03/10/13 Dublin, Ireland 1. J.R. Alexander – Memories The beautifully produced opening track from an EP released in 2012 by Jerome Alexander of Message to Bears featuring the sounds of the cups & saucers jostling about as patterned percussion. 2. Holden – The Illuminations (Excerpt) A brief tumble through the stars via an excerpt from James Holden's new album 'The Inheritors'. 3. Clark – Soft Eruptor One of five tracks from the Iradelphic sessions sent out to people on Clarks mail out list recently & described as some extra material from his recent release 'Iradelphic', it contained some of my favourite Clark tracks ever. The blurred use of Martina Topley Birds vocals here envelop the guitar beautifully. 4. Recomposed by Max Richter – Autumn 3 (Vivaldi, The Four Seasons) A brief striking piece from Max Richter's interesting Four Seasons recomposition project. 5. Girls Names – Pittura Infamante The key track from the brilliant LP 'New Life' by the Belfast 4 piece. 6. Wax Stag – Fantasy Gay A lovely leisurely piece of electro pop from the 80s referencing synth maestro Robert Lee aka Wax Stag. 7. Tim Hecker – No Drums Ghostly, poignant, hopeful and bleak, this piece from Tim Heckers amazing Ravedeath 1972 album is the audio equivalent of a haunting. 8. Chequerboard – Obelisk A brief track from my new album 'The Unfolding' out now on Lazybird records. http://www.chequerboard.com 9. Christ – One Sunny Cloudy Day A melting glacier of nostalgia under a blanket of surface noise from the elusive Scottish electronic artist Christ. The accompanying video by Stefan Larsson depicting two mysterious figures mirroring the movements of robotic trees in a snowy realm is a masterpiece. 10. Bark Psychosis – All Different Things A beautiful exercise in the extremes of quiet & loud from English shape shifting post rock/musical project Bark Psychosis. 11. Red House Painters – Sundays & Holidays An old tumbling autumnal gem from Red House Painters 1994 Shock Me EP. 12. Ethernet – Current (Loscil Remix) Scott Morgan remixes Ethernet creating a stunningly vast realm of icey tones. Listen out for the distant bombs going off. 13. ilex – ilk Great piece from Dublin based Holly McGowans ilex project recalling Susumu Yokota via Orbital. 14. Colleen – Break Away An interesting vocal montage from Cecile Schotts brilliant new album ' The Weighing Of The Heart. 15. Library Tapes - Sun Peeking Through The beautifully poignant title track from Swede David Wenngren's recent album as Library Tapes. 16. Ametsub - Opening Above the clouds time with this strident gem from little known Tokyo-based Japanese artist Ametsub. 17. Blanck Mass - Sundown Music to watch stars explode to would be a fitting description for the music of Benjamin John Power, one of the founding members of Fuck Buttons. 18. Clark – Guy Fawkes/Night Night A hungry robot bird beckons in an unspooling guitar loop in this intriguing vignette from the Iradelphic Sessions mailout EP. 19. Luigi Boccherini – La Musica Notturna (Excerpt) I couldn't resist finishing on this charming snippit of Boccherini. Playful, charming but hinting at so much more.
