Unleashed - How to Thrive as an Independent Professional

Show Notes: Chris Heivly and Will Bachman discuss the concept of startup communities and the importance of building them. Chris is the co-founder of MapQuest, which was sold to AOL for $1.2 billion, and the author of the Build the Fort. His second book, The Startup Community Builder's Field Guide, focuses on how five simple lessons learned as a 10-year-old can set entrepreneurs up for startup success. Chris defines a startup community as a set of people involved in innovative activities in a particular geography. He explains that startup communities can be incredibly powerful in helping entrepreneurs to succeed and should be proactively built by providing resources, mentorship, and capital. The Benefits of a Startup Community Chris talks about the concept of startup communities and how they are no longer geographically bound. He believes that networks are essential in order to develop a successful startup community, and that all members of the community, such as corporate innovators, investors, founders, researchers, and university students, should work together for the greater good. Additionally, he mentions that the concept of startup communities applies to industry-specific communities as well, and not just geographically bound ones. He believes that the key to advancing technology is through startups and corporate innovation, and that these networks should be utilized to the fullest extent. Chris points out that it is important to rely on people outside of one's geographic network to build a successful community.  He explains that it can be difficult for founders to invest time and energy into the community due to the amount of tasks they have to complete in their business. He mentions that it is important to build meaningful connections in order to make a successful community and connect with venture capitalists, local investors, and to get involved in the local economy to make sure that it is thriving, and that one will gain knowledge and potential customers by doing so.  Chris suggests startup lawyers, marketing experts, economic development professionals, and people from universities want to ensure the success of startups and help create a vibrant local economy, and he shares a case study on a startup community he was involved with. The Advantages of a Local Tech Scene Chris talks about the advantages of being in a local tech scene, rather than working in a virtual space. He adds that the local physical advantage is that one can easily access mentorship and advice in a formal sense. He notes that this may come in the form of attending events, or engaging with other startups in the same building. He also points out that networking with local resources can be beneficial for finding answers to questions, and finding the right attorney for legal needs. He explains the importance of providing resources, such as programming and co-working spaces, to help new entrepreneurs get their businesses off the ground. Chris emphasizes the value of what they call gear, or ad hoc advice and mentorship, as an invaluable resource. These resources can be found through serendipitous sparks, such as running into people at coffee shops or events.  Chris suggests that the best way to create events and activities that will engage the community is to listen to what the people want and find a leader who is motivated to make a change. He encourages grassroots-style initiatives that come from the bottom up, and to move forward with the goal of helping or supporting others. The Three A's that Help Build Local  Community  To help the local community, Chris suggests that it can be done in various ways, such as running a Little League team or getting involved in the arts. He recommends getting involved in the entrepreneur community and how it can have a great economic impact.  Chris talks about the three A's framework in his book which stands for actors, activities, and attitudes. This framework is designed to make the ecosystem more inclusive and inviting for everyone to play a role. Actors can range from economic developers, government bureaucrats, university people, corporate members, founders, investors, and more. Activities vary depending on the maturity of the ecosystem. Attitudes are the most forgotten part of the framework and are important in creating a collaborative, supportive, and inclusive mindset. Chris encourages everyone to adopt a better attitude and behavior in order to create a better ecosystem. He offers a few steps to drive this forward. To build an active network that you can lean on, Chris suggests introducing two people from your network who don't know each other, and having a 'gift first mentality' by reaching out to others without expecting something in return. He shares a story from 2009 to 2010, where he ran around doing 275 connections in five months, and at the end asked a simple question: What can I do for you?. He encourages people to ask what keeps them up at night, and what their challenges are, so that they can be helped. Building a Network of Trust Chris believes that by helping others without expecting anything in return, a strong network of trust and support is created that can benefit everyone. He has met with over 4000 people in the Raleigh-Durham area to build these relationships. He encourages young people to do the same to get more done faster. In return, these contacts are more likely to help him with projects such as writing a book or speaking at events. Chris believes that by investing time and effort into forming meaningful relationships, success can be achieved more quickly. Chris has encountered thousands of people over the past 15 years and has created a system of pre-investing with each of them individually. He explains that he has an open office hours system where anyone can sign up for a 20 minute meeting. He also explains that, although he doesn't have a strong connection with all 4000 people, he can activate them whenever he needs to. His purpose is to support and empower founders to create successful businesses and cities. He hopes to accomplish this through his meetings and connections. Chris shares a few success stories from the people he has met and connections he has made, and the path he took after the success of his startup MapQuest. Johanna Rothman is one of my favorite people to interview and in this episode, she's back to talk about her new book Successful Independent Consulting: Relationships That Focus on Mutual Benefit. The book is full of insights and practical tips not just for consultants but anyone looking to establish themself and make their presence known in their profession. The conversation also covers the book she published last year, Free Your Inner Nonfiction Writer: Educate, Influence, and Entertain Your Readers because a big part of making your presence known is making sure your voice is heard. What's great about Johanna's books is that they are full of practical answers to the questions you show up with. But in reading Successful Independent Consulting I found it was also addressing the questions I hadn't figured out how to articulate yet, and the questions I didn't realize I was hiding from. She sent me an ebook version of Successful Independent Consulting to prep for the interview, and I was making so many notes in my Kindle that I had to order a hard copy as well, just so I could keep it all straight. During the interview, she shares some stories and examples of the challenges she faced in consulting and how she has overcome them. Whether you work in consulting or are just trying to carve out a space for yourself in the company you work for, you'll get a lot of value out of this conversation and her new book. I can't recommend the book enough. The advice she shares is already having a deep impact on how I approach my work. Unlike a typical podcast, I am not channeling in a space that has been set up for recording audio - Rather I am channeling in my meditation loft or outside in a natural setting. To put it another way, these channeled sessions are recorded ‘on location' and for this reason the sound quality may not be at the level of one who sits in a studio-like environment and carries on what my guides refer to as a human-to-human discourse.

1:22 And welcome back, guys. All right. So we've been gone for a while now. We're going to change some things up some weeks. We might have inspirational stories or we might just have tips and tricks on how to run your business. Sometimes we might just email conversations, but let's get this show on the road once again. I love you all. 8;22 , people's memories are awfully short. And, you know, and I think that when it's your reputation, it's it's easy to think like my reputation is ruined, this is permanent. But I mean, listen, there are endless stories of people who have had missteps in their lives and that have managed to turn things around. For me, because memory is short, the key to reversing a misstep, you know, especially if you feel like your reputation was damaged, is consistency in the other direction by having discipline and consistency in showing up and proving to the world that whatever it was, if you were like, 18;26 If they just wanted to be part of the community, I think being part of the community is just somebody that wants to be surrounded by supportive, successful individuals that are really out there trying to build a business and do their best by the people that they serve. If that's what you want and that's what you're looking for, you're a great fit for the Black Diamond Club. 22;15 like a muscle. You can build up the ability to make quick decisions. So start with something small like lunch where we will eat and take over. Being the person that always decides where you're going to eat with your significant other, don't hand that off to anybody else and then decide what you want in advance and stick to that decision. 27;00 Our favorite place on the planet is Abama, a small island in the Canary Islands. 30;22 Most people are non not intentional about who they would like to meet. Number two I've identified if I knew that I wanted to meet you, I would have to know why I wanted to meet you so that when I meet it, when I met you, I knew what to ask you. Right? And so a lot of people, again, I get this a lot where people are like, you know, oh, I had an opportunity to, you know, recently I took my good friend Grant Dennis to this charity event. 36;00 Yeah, I would I would 100% agree. I mean, being manipulative is that I'm trying to enter into the relationship just so that I could benefit versus being intentional is I see value for both of us. Yeah, I think that's one of the hardest things though for people because I get this a lot with a lot of my clients. Special thanks to James and luke for making this happen. In the latest city measles data, just six new cases were registered in July, with none so far in August. The number of new cases have steadily declined since the high point in April, when there were 183 new cases in one month. As the disease spreads through communities, it naturally reaches a maximum number of infections as the vast majority of people are vaccinated against the disease, and the city's efforts to distribute vaccinations ensured that the disease didn't spread further. Of the 642 total cases within the city, 88% were either unvaccinated or had an unknown vaccination status. The outbreak was mainly contained within a few Brooklyn neighborhoods, with 460 cases in Williamsburg, 123 in Boro Park, and 17 in Sunset Park. While the outbreak is coming to an end, it's important to make sure newborn children receive their vaccinations on schedule, as nearly all the infections were in children under 18 years old. Measles is a highly contagious disease that is spread through the air as sick individuals cough or sneeze. The measles vaccination is included in MMR shots, standing for measles, mumps, and rubella, that contain a specially-weakened form of the virus that trains the body's immune system on how to defend against that virus in the future. For information on where to obtain a measles vaccination, call 311 or view information from the Department of Health at nyc.gov/doh. The M14 bus along 14th Street recently won the distinguished award for the city's slowest bus line, averaging just 4.3mph, and it won't be getting a boost anytime soon if the surrounding neighborhoods have their way. 14th Street was originally scheduled to convert to a traffic-restricted busway on July 1st to quickly move buses across the city during the L Train shutdown, but then L Train plans were modified to keep the subway open and community groups stepped in to take legal action against the Department of Transportation's plan. The DOT estimates that the changes will increase the speeds of buses by 30%, and the plan is expected to run for 18 months, whenever it finally goes into effect. The city's new styrofoam ban went into effect on January 1st, but businesses had a six-month grace period to adjust, and now the numbers are in for the first full month of enforcement. In the first month, the city delivered 57 styrofoam violations, which each carry a $250 fine. Styrofoam cups and containers are notoriously difficult to recycle, and can't be accepted for recycling at all once they have been used for food, which leaves a permanent piece of trash sitting in a landfill for hundreds of years.
