In this episode we welcome Meredith Hama-Brown, director of the feature film Seagrass, in conversation with Sonja Baksa, Programmer + Program Lead at VIFFHaving decamped to a Gabriola Island couples' retreat in a last-ditch attempt to save their crumbling marriage, preoccupied Judith (Ally Maki) and Steve (Luke Roberts) leave their young daughters to their own devices. In turn, 11-year-old Stephanie (Nyha Breitkreuz) quickly ditches six-year-old Emmy (Remy Marthaller) in favour of a pack of unruly teens and their accompanying temptations. Abandoned and adrift, the introverted Emmy grows fixated with an eerie cave and convinced that her late grandmother has been conjured as an unseen ghost.Drawing from her own childhood experiences, writer-director Meredith Hama-Brown demonstrates a profound talent for eliciting unspeakably nuanced, frequently heartbreaking performances from Breitkreuz and Marthaller. Likewise, she deftly investigates the unique tensions of Judith and Steve's interracial marriage (including her infatuation with another man). All the while, Norm Li's highly observant cinematography provides a practically mesmerizing degree of intimacy. A deftly orchestrated, deeply moving portrait of a family at the brink of implosion, Seagrass sees Hama-Brown exude compassion and conviction in an accomplished debut.Meredith Hama-Brown is an actress, producer, and director. She is best known for her short Broke Bunny (2018), which won the Telus Sea to Sky Award at the Vancouver International Film Festival. With this short, she also won Best Narrative Film Award at Las Cruces International Film Festival and Best Film Award at the Future of Film Show. This is TRT World's Daily News Brief for Monday, December 18th. *) Israel kills 90 in refugee camp as its attacks continue in Gaza The Israeli army has launched deadly attacks across Gaza, hitting a refugee camp in the north, a hospital in the south and killing a teenage girl who had lost her leg in an earlier strike, according to Palestinian officials, media and eyewitnesses. Israeli strikes on the Jabalia refugee camp in northern Gaza killed 90 Palestinians, Gaza's health ministry spokesman told Reuters. Another missile attack on a house belonging to the Shehab family killed 24 people, Hamas Aqsa radio said. “We believe the number of dead people under the rubble is huge but there is no way to remove the rubble and recover them because of the intensity of Israeli fire,” the spokesman said by telephone. *) Voters in Chile reject draft constitution, election officials say Chilean voters have rejected a proposed new constitution drafted by a conservative-led committee, election officials said, meaning the charter imposed during the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet will remain in force. With 99 percent of referendum ballots counted, the “against” option prevailed with 55.75 percent of the vote, compared to 44.25 percent in favour, according to electoral service Servel just hours after voting ended around 6:00 pm on Sunday (2100 GMT). The latest version of a new proposed constitution was overseen by the far-right opposition Republican Party after voters roundly rejected a progressive draft in September 2022 that attempted to enshrine environmental protections and the right to elective abortion. *) Iraqis vote in first provincial elections for a decade Iraqis vote to choose their provincial councils, the first such election in a decade. Ballots will be held in 15 of Iraq's provinces but not in the other three which are Kurdish and operate under a separate autonomous system. The election is seen as a key test for the government of Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al Sudani. He rose to power just over a year ago on the back of a parliamentary coalition and has focused on developing public services and infrastructure ravaged by decades of conflict. *) Serbia President Vucic says his party won parliamentary polls Serbia's President Aleksandar Vucic has said his party had won a commanding victory in parliamentary elections, extending the populist outfit's rule in the Balkan country amid accusations of foul play by the opposition. Official results were set to be announced late on Monday but the president appeared certain of his Serbian Progressive Party (SNS)'s performance, just hours after the polls closed on Sunday. Even though Vucic was not personally on the ballot in Sunday's parliamentary and local elections, the contest was largely seen as a referendum on his government. And finally… *) 14th TRT International Documentary Awards held in Istanbul The 14th TRT International Documentary Awards, organised by Türkiye's national broadcaster TRT, took place in Istanbul between December 14-17 with screenings of national and international documentaries and the participation of expert guests in the field. Throughout the four-day event, documentaries competing in various categories and special selection films were shown to audiences, contributing to enriching the documentary climate in Türkiye. “The Lens of Democracy” received the Best Film Award in the International Category, while “Flaneur” was chosen as the Best Film in the National Professional Category. Speaking at the ceremony, TRT General Manager Mehmet Zahid Sobaci said the event is the largest documentary film festival in Türkiye. He pointed out that it is impossible to think independently about the history and adventure of documentaries and documentary making in Türkiye without TRT “because TRT, since its establishment, has become the school of documentary making.” And that's your daily news brief from TRT World. I loved talking with Deepa Mehta. I could have listened to her for hours, and I wish she could be my friend for life. Deepa is a citizen of the world, an Oscar-nominated filmmaker whose work is celebrated internationally and has played at every major film festival. Deepa has worked with George Lucas, yet often has turned down Hollywood to create emotionally resonating, award-winning cinema that matters to her and you and me.  Born in India and an immigrant to Canada, Deepa is a visionary storyteller, and her fearless journey has taken audiences to places they could never have imagined. She challenges conventions, breaks barriers and sparks conversations with a rare authenticity that lingers long after the credits roll. Her work at times has been so provocative that her life has been threatened, and her film sets destroyed by those who fear the truth.  Deepa shares her journey and talks about her latest documentary, I Am Sirat. This groundbreaking work was shot entirely on smartphones. This film tells the story of Sirat Taneja, a transgender woman who must act as her mother's son when at home in New Delhi but can be the woman she is with her friends and work. It is the story of duality and belonging – two themes that weave through Deepa's films and lead us to question our place on this earth. Do we belong? I Am Sirat is premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and is one of the eleven films competing for the Best Film Award at the London Film Festival.  I then invite Lexi Marton, Director of Brand Marketing at RBC, to share what RBC is doing during their 15th year as a major sponsor of TIFF and what RBC is doing to help emerging filmmakers create and find the audience their content deserves.

Krish gives us the lowdown on the top nominations from ‘All Quite on the Western Front', with an astonishing 14 nominations, to ‘The Banshees of Ineshirin', ‘Living', ‘Tár', ‘Aftersun' and many more. He also tells us about the prestigious EE Rising Star Award, celebrating its 18th year, and the only award at BAFTAs voted for by the British public. The nominees this year are Naomi Ackie, Sheila Atim, Aimee Lou Wood, Emma Mackey and Daryl McCormack. Krish's enthusiasm for cinema as a treasured part of our culture is infectious. In Stockholm, Magnus Von Horn worked on distributing a variety of films for Sonet and as an assistant script reader and as a light and camera assistant. Magnus then left the Swedish film industry to pursue his film directing dreams at the Polish National Film, Television and Theatre School. He has produced several short films in Poland including the documentary short Radek about 25 years old, ex-convict and former drug dealer and thief who attempts to cope with his aggressions with obstacles. His narrative short, Echo, is about a police investigator re-constructing a brutal murder, hoping to learn how two young boys could have committed such a crime and what results in the process. Echo has received numerous awards, including the Best Film Award at Munich International Festival of Film Schools, the Grand Prix at the Open Student Film Festival in St. Petersburg, and is a finalist in the renowned Manhattan Short Film Festival. Magnus is also working on Without Snow, a 30 minute fictional short, and The Doctors, a 25 minute documentary.
