For this week's main podcast review, Katie Johnson, Dan Bayer, Daniel Howat, and Brendan Hodges join me to discuss the latest film from Academy Award-nominee Rian Johnson in the "Knives Out" franchise "Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery," starring Daniel Craig, Josh O'Connor, Glenn Close, Josh Brolin, Mila Kunis, Jeremy Renner, Kerry Washington, Andrew Scott, Cailee Spaeny, Daryl McCormack, and Thomas Haden Church. The second film to premiere on Netflix following "Glass Onion" and the third in the franchise overall, this latest murder-mystery sees Craig's Benoit Blanc return in a case that will take him to religious highs and devilish lows, with another electric cast of characters and plenty of twists and turns. What did we think of it? Please tune in as we discuss the story, performances, characters, cinematography, the blending of spiritual drama, mystery thriller, and playful humor, the future of the franchise, its awards season chances, and more in our SPOILER-FILLED review. The penultimate regular Empire Podcast of the year is here, folks (don't worry, there are specials galore on the way), and it's a belter. Guest-wise, we have more goodies under the tree, as Jamie Graham talks to longtime collaborators Shih-Ching Tsou and Sean Baker (the director of Anora) about Tsou's directorial debut, Left-Handed Girl, which can be seen on Netflix; [25:27 - 41:51 approx] and Chris Hewitt has lovely chats with Wake Up Dead Man suspects, Daryl McCormack and Cailee Spaeny, [1:04:42 - 1:19:44 approx] and the legendary James L. Brooks, who returns to directing this week with Ella McCay. [1:40:42 - 1:54:01 approx] Either side of that little lot, Chris is joined in the podbooth by Helen O'Hara, James Dyer, and Beth Webb for more Christmas movie shenanigans, including a discussion of their favourite Christmas movie songs, and where they'd like to spend Christmas if they were in a movie. You'll be staggered to know that a certain plaza in LA gets a mention. The team also talk about the Golden Globe nominations and the potential Netflix acquisition of Warner Bros. (this episode was recorded before the Supergirl trailer launched, sadly), and they review Wake Up Dead Man (again), Eleanor The Great, Goodbye June, and Fackham Hall, which sees an Empire Podcast first. You'll have to listen to find out what that is. Enjoy!

Travis Hopson reviews Rian Johnson's WAKE UP DEAD MAN: A KNIVES OUT MYSTERY starring Daniel Craig, Josh O'Connor, Kerry Washington, Andrew Scott, Jeremy Renner, Glenn Close, Cailee Spaeny, Mila Kunis, Daryl McCormack, and Thomas Haden Church.SYNOPSIS: Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) returns for his most dangerous case yet in the third and darkest chapter of Rian Johnson's murder mystery opus. When young priest Jud Duplenticy (Josh O'Connor) is sent to assist charismatic firebrand Monsignor Jefferson Wicks (Josh Brolin), it's clear that all is not well in the pews. Wicks's modest-but-devoted flock includes devout church lady Martha Delacroix (Glenn Close), circumspect groundskeeper Samson Holt (Thomas Haden Church), tightly-wound lawyer Vera Draven, Esq. (Kerry Washington), aspiring politician Cy Draven (Daryl McCormack), town doctor Nat Sharp (Jeremy Renner), best-selling author Lee Ross (Andrew Scott), and concert cellist Simone Vivane (Cailee Spaeny). After a sudden and seemingly impossible murder rocks the town, the lack of an obvious suspect prompts local police chief Geraldine Scott (Mila Kunis) to join forces with renowned detective Benoit Blanc to unravel a mystery that defies all logic.WAKE UP DEAD MAN is in select theaters now, Netflix on December 12th.All of this and more can be found at www.punchdrunkcritics.com!Subscribe to Punch Drunk Critics on YouTube: / @punchdrunkcritics1 Follow Punch Drunk Critics on Twitter: / pdcmovies Follow Punch Drunk Critics on Facebook: / pdcmovies You can also subscribe to our podcast Cinema Royale anywhere you get your podcasts!#WakeUpDeadMan #KnivesOut #rianjohnson
Rian Johnson & Daniel Craig have returned to deliver us their third Knives Out Mystery. Wake Up Dead Man has now dropped in select theaters worldwide, and will drop on Netflix on December 12. I'm very lucky to be ten minutes away from a local cinema that plays all of Netflix's releases before they drop on the platform, so you bet I rushed out to see the new whodunnit on the first day of release. The first Knives Out is easily my favorite murder-mystery of all-time, and Glass Onion was definitely a really solid follow-up even if it was a little uneven. More importantly though, I think Benoit Blanc, played by Daniel Craig, has to be on the Mount Rushmore of most iconic new movie characters of the past decade; in fact, I think Craig is so good in the role that Blanc is now dangerously close to overtaking Bond as his most iconic character. I know, I know... sue me. Rian Johnson is also one of my favorite filmmakers and he never misses! So, is Wake Up Dead Man the most engrossing mystery the team have delivered yet? The Last Frontier Top User Rated Original Movies per Streamer Last week we ran down the top streamer's price histories and at one point I (Ara), said that Amazon really didn't have many movies worth watching but since it came included with Prime shipping who cares. So this week I wanted to see what Amazon Original Movies were available and how they rated on IMDB. This did not include TV series like Reacher, Terminalist, etc. I just wanted to see if there was something I was missing. Then I expanded it to all the streamers we talked about last week and thus we created a list of the highest rated original movies from each streamer as rated by viewers on IMDB. Note the list goes from lowest to highest. Paramount+ Hunger Ward (2020) with a rating of 7.1/10. This short documentary, directed by Skye Fitzgerald, explores the Yemeni Civil War's famine through the work of two female health workers at therapeutic feeding centers for malnourished children. It premiered on Paramount+ in 2021 and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Short Subject. Hulu Good Luck to You, Leo Grande (2022) with a rating of 7.2/10 based on over 34,000 user votes. Directed by Sophie Hyde and starring Emma Thompson as a widowed retiree exploring her sexuality with a young sex worker (Daryl McCormack), it's a witty and intimate comedy-drama praised for its honest take on aging, desire, and vulnerability. Peacock Psych 3: This Is Gus (2021) with a rating of 7.5/10 based on over 5,500 user votes. This comedy-mystery TV movie, directed by Steve Franks, serves as the third installment in the Psych film series and follows fake psychic detective Shawn Spencer (James Roday Rodriguez) and his best friend Burton "Gus" Guster (Dulé Hill) as they investigate Gus's bride-to-be's past amid wedding chaos, all while Lassiter (Timothy Omundson) faces career uncertainty. It's praised for its sharp humor, heartfelt moments, and nostalgic callbacks to the original USA Network series. Netflix Marriage Story (2019) with a rating of 7.9/10 (from over 380,000 votes). Directed by Noah Baumbach, this poignant drama follows a stage director (Adam Driver) and his actress wife (Scarlett Johansson) as they navigate a grueling divorce, exploring the emotional toll on their family and creative lives. It received critical acclaim for its sharp screenplay, authentic performances, and raw depiction of marital breakdown, earning six Oscar nominations including Best Picture. Apple TV+ Wolfwalkers (2020) with a rating of 8.0/10 based on over 43,000 user ratings. This animated fantasy adventure, directed by Tomm Moore and Ross Stewart, follows a young hunter's daughter who befriends a girl from a wolf-shifting tribe in 17th-century Ireland. It stands out for its hand-drawn animation, themes of friendship and freedom, and cultural folklore elements, earning an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature. Amazon Prime The Handmaiden (2016) with a rating of 8.1/10 from nearly 195,000 votes. Directed by Park Chan-wook and adapted from Sarah Waters' novel Fingersmith, this erotic psychological thriller is set in 1930s Japanese-occupied Korea. It follows a con artist, a pickpocket disguised as a handmaiden, and a wealthy heiress in a tale of seduction, betrayal, and revenge told across three perspectives. Amazon Studios acquired U.S. distribution rights after its 2016 Cannes premiere, making it an exclusive Prime Video original. Its high rating comes from praise for its intricate plot, stunning visuals, and strong performances by Kim Min-hee, Kim Tae-ri, and Ha Jung-woo. For comparison, other top Amazon originals include Manchester by the Sea (7.8/10), Sound of Metal (7.7/10), and The Big Sick (7.5/10).

In 1996, a summer blockbuster movie blew into theaters and knocked everybody off their feet. That movie was “Twister” and starred Helen Hunt and the late, great Bill Paxton. Now 28 years later, we get a long awaited follow-up to that tornado-terrific, earth-moving box office hit, called “Twisters.” Now instead of Bill Paxton, the rapidly rising star Glen Powell tries to fill his boots. He plays Tyler, who calls himself a tornado wrangler who likes to go viral and peddle his merch. One of his phrases, as he tries to entertain his fans, is “You don't face your fears. You ride em'!” We also have Daisy Edgar-Jones as Kate, who was a storm chaser until tragedy struck, and so now she stays out of the field. Just so the plot can move forward, she's coaxed back out into the wild, windy west to help some other storm chasers potentially save lives from a mass of tornadoes. All these characters bring their impressive and intricate modern day technology to this world of tornadoes, but no amount of tech will save you from the deadly, disastrously massive force of a tornado and the debris that it turns into lethal projectiles. Will Tyler take it too far in finding that rush? Can Kate do anything to give the people in the path of these fatal forces of nature a chance? Is it worth finding out? Check out this episode to find out! “Twisters” also stars Anthony Ramos, Brandon Perea, Maura Tierney, Harry Hadden-Paton, Sasha Lane, Daryl McCormack, Kiernan Shipka, Nik Dodani, David Corenswet, Tunde Adebimpe, Katy O'Brian, David Born, Paul Scheer, Laura Poe, Austin Bullock and Stephen Oyoung. País Reino Unido Dirección Sophie Hyde Guion Katy Brand Reparto Emma Thompson, Daryl McCormack, Isabella Laughland Música Stephen Rennicks Fotografía Bryan Mason Sinopsis Nancy Stokes, una maestra de escuela jubilada, anhela algo de aventura y sexo. Buen sexo.
There's nothing like a little light-hearted solicitation to relive your lost youth and discover how amazing sex could be since your, now deceased, boring husband "missionary Martin" never gave it propa'. So, in walks gigolo Leo Grande (Daryl McCormack) to guide Nancy (Emma Thompson) in her search for the ever-elusive big "O". Just chuck some fit bloke some cash and it'll solve all your problems basically. Some procrastination here, some procrastination there, and that's what Emma Thompson as Nancy does in the sex comedy drama ("sexadramady"?) penned by Katy Brand and directed by Sophie Hyde. It's a weird one. At the heart of the film is a sex-positive message that has some genuinely touching moments from the inimitable Ms. Thompson. But when you come down to it, it misses the mark in giving Mr. McCormack enough meat to play with. You'll get what we mean when you give it a listen. GOOD LUCK TO YOU, LEO GRANDE is currently streaming on HULU in the US.

"The Lesson" had its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival, where it earned solid reviews for its strong performances from Daryl McCormack, Richard E. Grant, and Julie Delpy. We start this week by reviewing Mel Eslyn's post-apocalyptic dramedy BIOSPHERE (2:01), which stars Sterling K. Brown and Mark Duplass (who also co-writes) as the last two men on Earth, who learn that they must adapt, quite literally, to save humanity. It has great performances and surprising themes, but we don't all agree on how well it tackles those themes. Next, we cover Alice Troughton's thriller, THE LESSON (25:10), which stars Daryl McCormack as a young writer who tutors the son of a famous author (Richard E. Grant) and discovers a dark web of family secrets. We agree that the film's acting is top-notch, but for two of us, it isn't thrilling or surprising in any way. And in this week's Patreon exclusive audio, we talk about Nicholas D. Johnson and Will Merrick's technological thriller MISSING, a follow-up to 2018's SEARCHING (which we discussed as our AAPI Heritage Month poll winner on a recent Patreon bonus episode!
Actor and filmmaker Vanessa Matsui (Ghost BFF, The Girlfriend Experience, The Hot Zone, Letterkenny) celebrates the Toronto premiere of her directorial debut, Midnight at the Paradise, by digging into the remarkable chemistry of Emma Thompson and Daryl McCormack in Sophie Hyde's Good Luck to You, Leo Grande. Your genial host Norm Wilner apologizes for calling Daryl "David" that one time.Midnight at the Paradise premieres this Friday, April 21st, at the Paradise Cinema (of course). Tickets are still available right here.
Daryl McCormack is having a very good moment right now: nominated for two Baftas, recently seen in a critically-acclaimed Apple TV+ show Bad Sisters, and happily talking about his new best friendship with Emma Thompson, his co-star in sexual discovery comedy-drama Good Luck To You, Leo Grande. Charming and chatty and just generally a tip-top human being, Daryl nattered away with Ali over magic of the internet earlier this week, and here is the double pizza-fuelled result. That'll make just a touch more sense once you've listened, by the way. Hopefully.

Welcome back to Get Your Binge On! After taking a much needed mental health break and after soaking up a month of family time- I'm back with a brand new episode. Not only that, but I've refreshed the Get Your Binge On podcast brand and I'm eager to hear your thoughts on it. The first part of the episode I go into how 2023 will bring a new flavor of the podcast, and then I'm bringing you a feature episode on the film Good Luck to You, Leo Grande. This film follows Nancy Stokes, a retired school teacher, who is yearning for some adventure, and some sex. She has a plan, which involves hiring a young sex worker named Leo Grande. This 2022 film has been flying under the radar, and I discovered it through Emma Thompson's(who plays Nancy) many interviews surrounding her role and the taboo culture around female pleasure. This film also stars Daryl McCormack who is extremely talented, and quite a looker too! I hope you enjoy this episode and learning all about the movie that warmed my heart and soul and really opens up the discussion around sex and the human need for pleasure. Enjoy!! Good Luck To You, Leo Grande is a fantastic new British movie that sees Dame Emma Thompson and Daryl McCormack spend a lot of time together in a hotel room. So that's exactly what we made them do again this week, with Ella Kemp (making her Empire Podcast debut) talking to the stars of Sophie Hyde's movie about an ageing woman who, having had very few positive sexual experiences, hires a sex worker (McCormack), and complications ensue. The film is frank, funny, and insightful, and their chat with Ella is similarly so, featuring Dame Emma's reminiscences about The Tall Guy, and one of the best answers we've ever had on the podcast. Hint: it features an Oscar. Then, in the podbooth this week, Chris Hewitt is joined by James Dyer and, for the first time in ages, Helen O'Hara, and truth be told, being reunited makes them go a little doolally. So, in-between answering a listener question about the film sets they've accidentally stumbled upon in a non-professional capacity, they talk about Helen's Wikipedia page, and Chris and Helen educate James about the history of the Giant's Causeway. They also discuss actual films at some point, including the week's movie news, including Lady Gaga possibly joining Joker 2 (which may be a musical???), the announcement of the Paddington 3 director, and their feelings about the official title of Knives Out 2: Benoit Boogaloo. In the reviews section, they run their eye over Good Luck To You, Leo Grande, Spiderhead, Everything Went Fine, and Last Seen Alive, and Sophie Butcher goes to infinity and beyond to help everyone get to grips with Pixar's Lightyear. Enjoy. TIMESTAMPS! (timings are approx.) "Good Luck To You, Leo Grande" premiered earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival and was later picked up by Searchlight Pictures, who released it this weekend on Hulu. The film stars Emma Thompson in one of her best roles to date as Nancy, a middle-aged retired woman looking for good sex at this point in her life, and Daryl McCormack in a breakout turn as her hired young sex-worker, Leo Grande. Both of them deliver terrific performances and are aided by the thoughtful writing from screenwriter Katy Brand. The sex-positive story carefully outlines both characters with a high level of detail, providing an insightful analysis of sex and the relationship the two share with one another. Katy was kind enough to talk with us about her screenplay, the characters, the hotel setting they share, and more. Please be sure to check out the film, now streaming on Hulu, and have a listen down below and enjoy. Thank you! Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on... In Good Luck to You, Leo Grande, Emma Thompson plays a widow yearning to fulfill a desire that's somehow eluded her her entire life: an orgasm. She sets about achieving her goal by hiring a much younger, highly attractive sex worker (Daryl McCormack). But their time spent together turns out to be much more than transactional. Good Luck To You, Leo Grande will stream on Hulu starting June 17th.
Oscar-winner Dame Emma Thompson has graced our screens for four decades. As an actor, she's played all kinds of women, from her role as Elinor Dashwood in Sense and Sensibility to her heart-breaking Karen in Christmas favourite, Love Actually. But now she's taking on a different kind of acting role. Good Luck To You, Leo Grande tells the story of Nancy Stokes, a 55-year-old widow (played by Thompson) who decides to hire a significantly younger male sex worker, played by the Irish actor, Daryl McCormack. She joins Emma to talk about women's pleasure, full frontal nudity and the #MeToo movement. If you're a woman and you have a baby it's going to cost you £70,000 in lost earnings over the next decade. That's according to new research from the Social Market Foundation which is setting up a cross party commission to tackle the spiralling costs of childcare. Emma talks to Director of the Foundation James Kirkup about its findings, and one woman working as a senior mental health nurse who says she takes home just £100 per month after childcare costs. We also get the view of the Early Years Alliance, a charity that represents child minders, nurseries and pre-schools. Since 2009, the artist Kirstie MacLeod has been working on The Red Dress project. Pieces of this burgundy silk dress have travelled around the world to be embroidered by women, many of whom have been marginalised or live in poverty. It's given them a platform and an opportunity to share their story and identity. After 13 years, 46 countries and 343 embroiderers, the dress is finally complete. Kirstie joins Emma to describe the finished dress. Presenter: Emma Barnett Producer: Alison Carter Photo credit: Nick Wall © GoodLuckLeoLimited
