Welcome to Episode 4 of Scripted by Paradox House... This week we spend some quality time with award-winning writer, Rebecca Lenkiewicz. Listen in as Daisy goes deeper into the process of writing for film, tv and theatre where golden knowledge lies. You're in for a treat. Rebecca Lenkiewicz is a British playwright and screenwriter. She is best known as the author of Her Naked Skin (2008), which was the first original play written by a living female playwright to be performed on the Olivier stage of the Royal National Theatre. Several of Rebecca's plays have been published individually, and in 2013 Faber & Faber published a collection. Rebecca wrote on Secret Diary of a Call Girl for television. She co-wrote the Polish-language film Ida (2013) with Paweł Pawlikowski, its director. The film is set in Poland in the 1960s and is the story of what happens when a novitiate nun first learns that she is an orphan of Jewish parenthood. The first version of the screenplay was written in English by Lenkiewicz and Pawlikowski, when it had the working title Sister of Mercy. Pawlikowski then translated the screenplay into Polish and revised it. The screenplay for Ida won the European Screenwriter category at the 27th European Film Awards in 2014,[29] and the Oscar for Best Foreign Film at the ceremony on 22 February 2015. She co-wrote, with director Sebastian Leilo, the script for the adaptation of Disobedience in 2017. She and collaborators Wash Westmoreland and Richard Glatzer wrote the screenplay for Colette in 2018. More recently for TV, Rebecca was the lead writer for Steve McQueen's hard-hitting series, Small Axe (2020), which is based on the real-life experiences of London's West Indian community and is set between 1969 and 1982. Enjoy!

- Phyllida Lloyd (2008) Musique de fin d'épisode : Run the world - Beyoncé (2011) Références mentionnées et/ou conseillées (par ordre chronologique de sortie) Films  Ève - Joseph L. Sam talks to writer-director Wash Westmoreland about his new film Colette, in cinemas now.  A radiant Keira Knightley (Atonement, Anna Karenina) gives a career-best performance in this exhilarating, entertaining and timely film about the life of groundbreaking French novelist Colette, best known for Gigi. In Belle Époque France, Colette’s marriage to Henry ‘Willy’ Gauthier-Villars (Dominic West) thrusts her from a simple country life in Burgundy to the creative demi-monde of Paris. A notorious libertine, fourteen years older than his naive country-girl wife, Willy encourages Colette to write (at times locking her in a room until she produces more). Publishing the results under his own name, he basks in the glory bestowed upon the hugely popular ‘Claudine’ stories, actually penned by his wife.Theirs is a complex marriage, depicted with intelligence and subtlety, as are Colette’s relationships with women – including American-in-Paris Georgie Raoul-Duval (Eleanor Tomlinson) and cross-dressing noblewoman Mathilde de Morny, or Missy (Denise Gough), with whom Colette shared Paris’ first documented same-sex kiss on stage. The themes of ownership, power, publicity and creativity are brought deliciously to life by Keira Knightley and Dominic West in this sparky, thoroughly-modern period piece. Knightley plays Colette as a sharp, unflinching heroine, struggling against the strictures of the age but never succumbing to them.

In this episode, the team are joined by Curzon's very own programmer Lydia Penke, as well as director Jason Reitman (Juno, Up in the Air, Tully) to talk about two of the week's biggest releases: Colette and The Front Runner.Colette is a truly modern, complex woman: a libertine and bisexual, she also made her fortune from her wits and pushed back against the patriarchy. Wash Westmoreland presents an elegant but not sanitised view of turn of the century Paris, where we watch as Colette (Keira Knightley) is seduced and married by notorious rake Willy (Dominic West). Pushed into ghostwriting novels for this charismatic cad, she uses her exuberance to push back against all constrictions placed on her in this rich portrait of a dazzling talent. In The Front Runner, it's 1988 and Gary Hart, played Hugh Jackman, is the likeable and inspirational Democratic nominee, winning hearts and minds on the campaign trail. But he's unwilling to open up about his family life, and the press unearth explosive details that begin to derail his marriage and his political aspirations. the personal fall out from this tabloid story changed the course of American politics.Discussing the films this week are Steven Ryder, Lydia Penke, Kelly Powell and Jake CunninghamFollow the team on Social Media:@ks_powell - Kelly@jakehcunningham - Jake@SamHowlett_1 - Sam@hydra815 - StevenProduced and Edited by Jake CunninghamMusic from Incompetech.com Hosted on Acast. We continue our conversation with lauded Cinematographer Giles Nuttgens in the second part of our discussion. Ranging from the technical aspects of Anthropomorphic both historically and currently, his partnership with David Mackenzie and last year's Oscar Nominated success Hell or High Water, to the "challenge of his career" filming Semih Kaplanoğlu's black and white film epic Grain, and some recommendations of great cinematographers to study. Bio Giles Nuttgens recently completed photography on director Wash Westmoreland’s period drama Colette, starring Keira Knightley as a struggling French novelist. Previously, he lensed David Mackenzie’s Hell or High Water, which premiered in Un Certain Regard at 2016’s Cannes Film Festival to critical acclaim. Starring Jeff Bridges, Chris Pine and Ben Foster, Nuttgens earned a 2017 BAFTA Film Award nomination for Best Cinematography for his work. In 2016 Nuttgens also worked on The Fundamentals of Caring, which first screened at Sundance. The film follows Craig Roberts, Paul Rudd and Selena Gomez as a trio who connect on a life changing crosscountry journey. The last film to ever be shot on black-and-white Kodak 35mm film, Nuttgens shot Grain in Istanbul. Ironically, the movie tells the story of a seed geneticist attempting to save the last batch of genetically unmodified wheat. Nuttgens’ other feature credits also include: Young Ones and God Help the Girl, which both premiered at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival; and The D Train (starring Jack Black and James Marsden) and What Maisie Knew (starring Julianne Moore and Alexander Skarsgard) – both shot with his long-time collaborators, the directing team Scott McGehee and David Siegel. With director Deepa Mehta, Nuttgens lensed Midnight’s Children, based on the bestselling Salman Rushdie novel. Nuttgens’ also shot Mehta’s elemental trilogy Fire, Earth and Water. Water received a 2007 Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film and earned Nuttgens the 2006 GENIE Award for Best Cinematography. In 2007, Nuttgens’ “sigh-inducingly evocative” (the Telegraph) cinematography for Mister Foe earned Best Cinematography awards at the Copenhagen Film Festival and British Film Festival in Dinard, as well as a Best Cinematography nomination at the 2008 Evening Standard Awards. Nuttgens first worked with McGehee and Siegel on The Deep End, a film which earned Nuttgens the 2001 Sundance Film Festival Award for Best Cinematography and a nomination in the same category at the 2002 Independent Spirit Awards. BBC trained, Nuttgens was one of the youngest cameramen ever to be appointed to the BBC and worked on a variety of dramas, documentaries and news program. Nuttgens remembers an exceptional experience in his early career spending four months in the Brazilian jungle sleeping on the sandbanks on the side of the Araguaia River. There, he ate dried manioc flour and the red-bellied Amazonian piranha that he fished for every day. Giles is represented by DDA. Filmmakers Vohn Regensburger, Wash Westmoreland, Richard Glatzer, and Chris Bruno talk about their new movies: A Remarkable Life and The Last of Robin Hood. Regensburger is the writer/director of the first film, which stars Bruno, who also helped with the writing and served as one of the producers. Glatzer and Westmoreland are the writers/directors of the second offering to be discussed. Film critic Mack Bates will co-host.   A Remarkable Life tells the story of a man who finds his life falling apart and is forced to examine his identity, his manhood and his sense of self. Lenny (played by Bruno) faces loss of his job, a son with Asperger's Syndrome, and a wife who's fallen in love with the son's female doctor. It's a highly entertaining film - but one that gives us a lot to think about. Director Regensburger also composed the impressive music score, just as he did for his first film, Last of the Romantics. The Last of Robin Hood  follows Errol Flynn's scandalous affair with a star-struck teenage girl. Kevin Kline plays Flynn in his later years -- not the heartthrob from The Adventures of Robin Hood. Dakota Fanning and Susan Sarandon play the young girl and her mother who enables the affair, respectively. This fascinating film deals with fame and the high price it can exact. Glatzer and Westmoreland have also written and directed Quinceanera, Pedro, The Fluffer and Grief.
