Bill Schonely was already a legend in Portland by the time the Trail Blazers selected Mychal Thompson with the first overall pick in 1978. Over the next 40-plus years, Thompson forged a friendship with the legendary radio play-by-play announcer, including a stretch when they were both part of the Blazers broadcast crew in the ‘90s. Thompson, now a radio color analyst for Lakers games, calls The Schonz Portland's answer to Chick Hearn and Vin Scully. He joined the Sports by Northwest this week to share his fondest memories of the man he calls the greatest Trail Blazer and to tell stories about his own playing career and fatherhood. Here are some highlights from this week's show: · Thompson on what made Schonely special · How the Blazers can better honor their greats, not just Schonely. · In an increasingly corporate and polarized NBA, can there ever be another Schonz? · Where Damian Lillard ranks among greatest Blazers and how the franchise can build a winning team around him before it's too late · Memories of Klay Thompson's youth sports days with Kevin Love — and the Lake Oswego dynasty that could have been · On raising sons who became professional athletes and watching LeBron James try to do the same. · Speaking of dynasties: Did the Blazers blow the No. 1 pick in 1978 when they selected Thompson? He has thoughts. Subscribe to Sports by Northwest anywhere you listen to podcasts. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The past week has been really hard for the Portland Trail Blazers family. Legendary play by play announcer, Bill Schonely, who came up with the phrase “Rip City” passed away at the age of 93 on January 21, 2023. Bill was an absolute legend of the broadcasting community and will go down as one of the best to ever do it. To remember Bill and discuss his time with the Trail Blazers, Sean Highkin welcomes Kevin Calabro on the show. Calabro worked with Bill and was the former voice of the Seattle SuperSonics. Kevin Calabro tells Sean Highkin stories about working with Bill Schonely. He tells Sean about how Bill was the first one to call him when he got his job with the Trail Blazers. The countless times where Bill would tell him to not mess up before he would go on air. Calabro goes into detail too about how broadcasting has changed during his career and integrating analytics into the broadcast for the fans. Then the guys remember another legend in the Trail Blazers community, John Curry. John was a camera man that passed away in the past week. Rose Garden Report sends their love to John and Bill's families. With the recent struggles of the Portland Trail Blazers, Sean asks Kevin Calabro his thoughts on the recent play of the Trail Blazers. Calabro goes into how injuries completely wiped out an already pretty weak Trail Blazers bench. The guys go into how that will only improve with a lot of guys getting back and becoming healthier as a team. Plus they look into where this tough stretch originally started for the Portland Trail Blazers. The 1984 Seattle Seahawks did have the “Original” Curt Warner on the roster, but the 3rd pick of the 1983 NFL Draft out of Penn State was injured in the opening game versus the Cleveland Browns, ending his season. Harris joined the Seahawks in September, but only ended up playing in 8 games and ended up with 170 yards rushing on the season. He never played in the NFL again. He was inducted into the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame and in 2003 the Blazers retired his microphone. Bill Schonely now works as the Blazers Goodwill Ambassador.

Though his hall of fame broadcasting career spanned nearly three decades, the biggest impact Bill Schonely had on the Trail Blazers franchise came during his first season in 1970. Episode Four of The Trail features a sit-down with The Schonz as he acutely recalls the first time he belted the words “Rip City”, and how that phrase has transformed the region. Schonely then describes calling the championship game in 1977 and tells his secret to staying sharp and healthy at the age of 86. Also, Damian Lillard makes his first appearance on The Trail, and we preview Episode Five.
The phrase 'Rip City' would not exist without hall of fame broadcaster Bill Schonely. Over the course of his career with the Trail Blazers, which spans the better part of four decades, "The Schonz" has become an icon in the Trail Blazers community. But how did he find his way to Portland? What was his background? The Trail investigates.
