Bill Walton would often state that he was the luckiest man in the world. Every time he would say that with his infectious energy I'd smile, and I bet you would too. He looked at life through an incredible lens and one that was optimistic and oftentimes inspiring.Heading into my 16th year of putting a headset on as a broadcaster, I too feel like Bill often did. Over the course of time, I've stood next to Steve Physioc, Kevin Calabro and for the better part of the last decade, Ted Robinson. How lucky have I been to have been given a PhD by those three in the school of broadcasting!? Let alone having Lewis Johnson, Samantha Ponder, Jill Savage, Cindy Brunson, Ashley Adamson and more on the sideline. It's been an absolute joy and it's an understatement to share how each of those gifted professionals have impacted millions of sports fans, and myself. This week brings a new season with a new crew, a new logo, and a new network. I'll be in a familiar setting - overlooking Autzen Stadium in prime time on Saturday night and next to me will be a guy I've known for the last 12 years, Guy Haberman. What's so special about Guy is that he truly loves sports broadcasting, having recorded himself calling games as a child. On Saturday night, he will also be living a dream, perched a few hundred feet above a majestic field amid a standing-room-only crowd. Additionally, Guy is a selfless friend, loving husband and extremely talented broadcaster. While the viewer usually only see's the TV crew on air, what makes a unit special is the time off the airwaves. Guy and I have called a few games together in our careers and we've made Week 1 games our speciality in places like Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City and others. But the best part has always been the week leading up to it – the countless calls, the meals while driving to and from the stadium and even the final stop at a FedEx to print out our materials. It's a dream, all of it. And this fall I'm so thankful to have Guy as the next guy I get to learn from and celebrate the game with.In advance of our first game together on the Big Ten Network I had to have him on the Y-Option podcast, presented by our founding partner 76, to learn about his origin story and how he explores the craft of play-by-play.Hope you enjoy our conversation as Guy, Rhett Lewis and myself are so looking forward to bringing you college football this fall.Enjoy Week 1 and what should be another magical ride alongside the sport we all love. For more insights around college football through the lens of the West Coast, go to y-option.comThis episode was executive produced by Jim Thornby and edited by Victor Ren.This podcast is a Best Coast Media production. If you follow professional basketball, chances are you've heard a booming broadcast by the incredible Kevin Calabro. And if you've been so lucky, then you know what a thrill ride it is listening to his exhilarating play-by-play. By his own admission, Kevin wants listeners to know that he's having fun on the mic, because that's what sport is all about! As a kid he remembers gaining an appreciation for radio, listening to famous baseball announcers with big personalities like Jack Buck and Harry Caray, and began exploring his own vocal chops as early as high school. Continuing through college and beyond, Kevin's reliability as a play-by-play announcer strengthened enormously. After a year of calling minor league hockey and a bit of Purdue University basketball, he was eventually given the opportunity to move up to the big leagues. His first time announcing for NBA games would be in 1983 for the Kansas City Kings, but it's not until 1987 that Kevin would join a team that is very near and dear to my heart, the Seattle SuperSonics. With 20 years of his voice guiding us play by play through victory and heartbreak, Kevin has become my absolute favorite way to listen to basketball. We'll discuss the eventual end of his time with the Sonics, (which I myself, having been part owner of the SuperSonics at the time, regrettably shared some part in) but since then Kevin's had nothing short of an incredible career. Having called NBA games for several national broadcasting networks like ESPN Radio, TNT, TBS and NBA TV, as well as announcing for the Seattle Sounders soccer team and now the Portland Trail Blazers, he's even lent his voice to several NBA video games! I am super lucky to have had the opportunity to know Kevin for many years, and I'm sure you're going to love diving deeper into his story. Thanks for tuning in to episode 42. We hope you enjoy it! Mike and I had a great time talking to Soul Jazz Keyboardist Robert Walter about his high school band Daddy Long Legs, his current band: The Greyboy Allstars and what it's like being on tour with Pink Floyd's Roger Waters.     Robert is heading back on tour in March 2023 with Roger's band for the European leg of the tour. About Robert: A founding member of the seminal groove band The Greyboy Allstars, organ, keyboard and synth sharp-shooter Robert Walter splits his time between his own 20th Congress, The Greyboy Allstars, and a robust film soundtrack career in Los Angeles.   Initially formed as the backing band for rare groove luminary DJ Greyboy, The Greyboy Allstars became a longterm project for Walter with a string of critically acclaimed albums, world tours. The band quickly became home to some of the most revered players on the modern music scene.   The Greyboy Allstars' success also served as a platform for the band's individual members to launch highly successful and substantially diverse solo careers. To flex his desire to compose in a way that was just outside of Greyboy's wheelhouse, Walter formed 20th Congress and recorded and toured heavily through the late '90s and '00s.    The band featured a rotating crew of brilliant improvisers and genre-bending virtuosos over the years including Stanton Moore, Joe Russo, Will Bernard, and Cochemea Gastelum, Simon Lott, Victor Little, Chris Alford, Scott Metzger, Andy Hess, and John Kimock,   A brilliant improviser with a gift for riveting hooks and unstoppable grooves, Walter set out to create songs that blur the line between the composed and the spontaneous; an album with a narrative arc that isn't tethered to concrete ideas. He uses a full arsenal of keyboards, synths and electronics and draws together the varied aspects of his career, from his film soundtrack work with Michael Andrews to his free-ranging improvisational excursions with the likes of genre jugglers like Marco Benevento, Skerik and Mike Gordon. ******** KNOW GOOD MUSIC can be found on Podbean (host site), Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Iheart Radio, Pandora and almost anywhere you listen to podcasts.     Visit our YouTube Channel where you can see 3 short video segments from our interviews.  Just search "know good music".
