 Portland’s own junior ice hockey team, the Winterhawks, commemorate their 50th anniversary playing on the ice this season. With over 15 divisional championships, 13 conference titles and more than 135 alumni now playing in the National Hockey League, the team is the second-oldest professional team in Portland after the Trailblazers - and one of the best teams in the Western Hockey League’s U.S. Western Conference. Mike Johnson is the general manager of the team. Griffin Darby plays defense for the team. They both join to talk about how they're celebrating the team’s anniversary and their hopes for the future of the team.

WHL This Week - Radio Edition, recaps the Kubota CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game held earlier this week in Moncton, NB. Hear from WHL participants Tij Iginla, Tanner Howe, and Colton Roberts.  Former Kamloops Blazers/Everett Silvertips D Olen Zellweger made his long awaited NHL debut for the Anaheim Ducks this week.  We will take you back to that night which included his first NHL point.The Tempo WHL Player of the Week D Luca Cagnoni of the Portland Winterhawks stops by.  After recording eight points in four games, the Winterhawks continue to battle for 1st place in the US Division and the top seed in the Western Conference.Outgoing WHL Commisioner Ron Robison talks about his history with the game, which has been a labour of love.  Robison will wrap up a 24-year run as WHL Commisioner at the end of the season.

Start with his ability to create offense and how he makes life easier for his defensive partner by creating space and knowing when to utilize his large frame to help make that space. Also, discuss how he is refining the finer points of his defense with his ability to shut down the opposing team at the blue line and cover large amounts of space quickly. Finally, Luca Cagnoni's December 31st game against the Vancouver Giants displayed why the points may not be there; Cagnoni is the engine of the Winterhawks. Mike shares his roster thoughts and how he wants his team to play this season.Prince George Cougars rookie F Terik Parascak is the WHL leader in points heading into the weekend after a breakout start to the 2023-24 season.  His season includes a six-point game in Victoria  and his 15 points lead all WHL scorers heading into the weekend. Matt Bardsley took a very different route to WHL management, than most GM's. He enjoyed the sport of hockey as a spectator, then zamboni driver, minor hockey coach, and scout for several years with the Portland Winterhawks, before becoming Director of Player Personnel, and finally, AGM in 2013.During his time as AGM of the Winterhawks, Bardsley helped lead the team to a WHL Championship in 2013, during their third of four consecutive trips to the league finals.Bardsley discusses with Jason the importance of building confidence and what he looks for when recruiting players to build a championship-winning team.

WHL This Week - Radio Edition, updates the WHL Championship series presented by Nutrien.  The Seattle Thundebirds holding a 3-1 series stranglehold over the Winnipeg ICE. Hear from both players and coaches ahead of game five.The Portland Winterhawks and G Morgan Stickney made history at the 2023 CHL Prospects Draft.  The Redondo Beach, Calif. native became the first American-born female player to be drafted in the WHL when the Winterhawks selected her in the 10th round, #215 overall.  We will hear from her on being drafted and her connection to the Winterhawks.We are just a week away from the 2023 Memorial Cup Presented by KIA in Kamloops, BC.  We will check in on the planning and execution from the local host committee Chair Norm Daley.  It's the first time Kamloops hosted the event since 1995.Three-time Memorial Cup Champion and Calgary Flames Assistant Coach Ryan Huska is one of only four players all-time in the CHL to win three Memorial Cups.  Ryan takes us for a trip down memory lane as we preview this year's tournament looking back on his titles from 1992, 1994 and 1995.

The Portland Winterhawks rolled out a new logo earlier this month. The image of a hawk replaces the old logo, a racist caricature of a Native American man. Even though Native Americans and others in the community had been pushing for this change for some time, the junior ice hockey team did not acknowledge a reason for the change beyond needing “something that better represented the team.” Paul Lumley is the executive director of the Portland-based Native American Youth and Family Center and led the effort to get rid of the offensive Winterhawks mascot. He says that while the change is welcome, he's disappointed that the team is not acknowledging the harm caused by the old mascot. We hear what these kinds of changes mean to Indigenous Americans and tribal nations. We talk with Lumley and hear from Cynthia Connolly, who is on the executive board of the Lake Erie Native American Council and was part of the effort to get Cleveland's professional baseball team to change its name and logo.

Brandon Rivers and Josh Critzer recap the four game series Portland played against Prince George, the three Winterhawks away at World Juniors, previewed the upcoming three-in-three for the weekend of December 13, as well other Winterhawks news.
