In this episode of the Terribly Vexed Podcast, we tackle the aftermath of the recent election and the ever-growing sense of division in American politics. With Donald Trump continuing to stir the pot, we discuss how political discourse seems to have evolved into something more akin to professional wrestling—entertainment over substance, where it's less about solving problems and more about creating chaos for the masses. As the conversation unfolds, we explore whether voting still has any real impact in a system that feels increasingly rigged. Are figures like BlackRock and Vanguard really the ones in control? Are these financial giants quietly calling the shots behind the scenes while the public remains distracted by partisan squabbles? And with so much focus on the two-party system, is there any hope for a third party to break through, or is the game already stacked against them? We'd like to thank Camel Cigarettes for sponsoring this episode. Camel Cigarettes: A little breath of freedom, one puff at a time. Thank you for listening to the podcast. We appreciate your support and your time. Stay tuned for our next episode where we'll dive into the fascinating and controversial world of weather control. You won't want to miss it! Support Breaking Walls at https://www.patreon.com/thewallbreakers Although Bud Abbott and Lou Costello are remembered for their movies, they got their start toward national fame in radio. They'd met in 1929, when Costello was booked with a vaudeville act into a neighborhood theater. Abbott worked in the box office and soon found himself playing Costello's straight man. In 1938 they appeared at Loew's in New York, where they were seen by Ted Collins, architect of Kate Smith's career. Their slaphappy style was perfect for radio, and their rise to frontline stardom was rapid. For two seasons, beginning Feb. 3rd, 1938, they were regulars on The Kate Smith Hour, while also appearing on Edgar Bergen's Chase and Sanborn show. Signed by Universal in 1939, the duo pulled the studio out of financial trouble with a string of low-budget hits. NBC gave them a summer replacement show for Fred Allen in 1940. Then in the fall of 1942 they went on the air full-time for Camel Cigarettes. They were an immediate top-ten ratings hit, and became a Thursday night comedy staple. On Thanksgiving night in 1944 their 10PM NBC rating was 20.5, good for eighth overall on radio that week. More than sixteen million people tuned in.

MIKE HAMMER - 1953 episode of That Hammer Guy with Ted de Corsia in title role. (Internet text: Camel Cigarettes shared the sponsorship of the initial run of That Hammer Guy. An east coast production out of Mutual's WOR, by Episode No. 43 Larry Haines departed the series when Mutual decided to take the production to the west coast and Don Lee-Mutual's new $3M KHJ/Mutual facilities. George Petrie subbed as Mike Hammer for several epsidoes until veteran tough-guy Ted DeCorsia assumed the role for the remainder of the run. Adapted for Radio by, among others, Edward Adamson, the scripts were the equal of radio noir fare of the era, while liberally punctuated with Mickey Spillane's unique brand of aphorisms, underworld slang, Brooklynese and misogynistic references to the fairer sex. Richard Lewis directed the entire run, keeping the series well-paced, crisp and compelling. With the series split almost equally between Larry Haines and Ted DeCorsia, there's an obvious temptation to compare their respective characterizations. - BoxCar

Enjoy two free mystery episodes of Mystery In the Air w/ Peter Lorre A) 8/28/47 Beyond Good and Evil B) 9/4/47 The Mask of Medusa Peter Lorre had always wanted to star in his own dramatic radio program so when The Abbott & Costello Show took its 1947 summer vacation, NBC and advertising agency William Esty & Company, granted his wish. They turned over the microphones to Lorre as star of thirteen episodes of a chiller series titled Mystery in the Air. Cut from the cloth of tales woven by the imaginations of some of the most famous authors in history, Mystery in the Air, brilliantly brought horror classics to life, including “The Telltale Heart,” “The Marvelous Barastro,” “The Lodger,” “The Horla,” “The Black Cat”, “Crime and Punishment” and “The Mask of Medusa”. Lorre delivered tour de force performances of men tortured and driven by dark impulses. The supporting casts were the best in the business, including Agnes Moorehead, Peggy Webber, Russell Thorson, John Brown, Hans Conried, Howard Culver, Jane Morgan, Luis Van Rooten, Herb Butterfield and Ben Wright. The announcer was Henry Morgan, who we would all know later as Harry Morgan from TV's Dragnet and M*A*S*H. Sponsors were Camel Cigarettes and Prince Albert pipe tobacco. The series was produced and directed by Don Bernard and Cal Kuhl. Mystery in the Air was a collection of dark and compelling stories culled from the four corners of literature. Unfortunately for Peter Lorre fans, the series did not continue in the fall following its initial summer cycle.

In this episode, the guys chat about how important it is to learn from the mistakes of past marketers and why it's so tempting to engage in unethical marketing practices. Nico tells us the 6 things we can learn from history and Chad reads one of the sketchiest Instagram posts ever.  It all starts with how JUUL, a very well known electronic cigarette brand, ignored all the mistakes their predecessors made and completely crashed and burned. They shamelessly marketed their products to teenagers and profited off products that killed people. Why would they ignore all warning signs and allow history to repeat itself? In the summer of 2015 founders Adam Bowen and James Monsees launched the JUUL Electronic Cigarette. In fall 2017 the newly named JUUL Labs had 200 employees, by the end of the following year they had 1500 employees. The company was valued at 15 Billion dollars, following a $650 million investment round. That is explosive growth and a whole lot of success.  So this sounds like another silicon valley success story, or even a company doing some good, reducing cigarette smoking? Well - there was a darker side. And one that would eventually come back to bite hard.  To understand why, the guys take a look back in history and discuss how in 1997, the Federal Trade Commission filed suit against the RJ Reynolds company - the owners of Camel Cigarettes - for specifically marketing to children with the “Joe Camel” cartoon campaigns. The results of these and other lawsuits were significant prohibitions on the marketing of tobacco to minors. And as a result - teenage smoking had been on the decline for decades leading up to JUUL's rise around 2015, 2016, and 2017. So JUUL had an opportunity… grow into a healthy new market, and be a force for good - helping to reduce tobacco dependency, and position themselves in the market as an aid to smoking cessation… OR… take the other route. The JUUL team was very successful at marketing their harmful products to teenagers. They actually made their device look like a flash drive so that parents wouldn't even be aware that their kids were “JUUL'ing”. The owners of JUUL weren't aware of the risks of their product but they still spent thousands of dollars to market their products to children as young as 8 years old. Then the blowback happened. In 2017 the FDA announced it was taking steps to crack down on e-cigarette use among teens. Not only were government regulators and researchers on their case…parents started to get involved. In response to the FDA crackdown, the company announced they would be using real customers who were using the product to switch from smoking instead of models. In late 2018, Juul shut down their social media accounts, they also agreed to make changes to its youth advertising practices as part of a settlement with the Center for Environmental Health. Listen to the interview with JUUL CEO here.  Nico and Chad end the episode by discussing why a big company like JUUL wouldn't learn from the past and go on to make mistakes, knowing that it could kill their brand. The Influence of greed is strong in marketing and kids are especially susceptible.  Enjoy the show! We speak about: [00:20] How can we learn from history? [02:30] The history of how JUUL got started [06:20] Concerns about who was using their product [09:40] Why were kids actively using the product? [21:40] The blowback [26:20] JUUL's response [30:40] Message from CEO [37:40] What have we learned Resources: Website: https://www.marketingrescuepodcast.com/

Camel remained the sponsor through the early WWII years until June 26, 1944. In 1944, Blondie was on the Blue Network, sponsored by Super Suds, airing Fridays at 7pm from July 21 to September 1. The final three weeks of that run overlapped with Blondie's return to CBS on Sundays at 8pm from August 13, 1944, to September 26, 1948, still sponsored by Super Suds. Beginning in mid-1945, the 30-minute program was heard Mondays at 7:30pm. Super Suds continued as the sponsor when the show moved to NBC on Wednesdays at 8pm from October 6, 1948, to June 29, 1949.
