Mystery In The Air 47-09-18 12 The Black Cat
This week on Vintage Classic radio's "Friday Night Noir" we continue our Halloween themed broadcast. Prepare for a spine-tingling evening with two classic tales of horror and mystery. First up, we delve into "Mystery in the Air", where Peter Lorre leads as the tormented protagonist in Edgar Allan Poe's chilling tale, "The Black Cat". The atmospheric tension is palpable, enhanced by the eerie performances of Henry Morgan as the Police Inspector and Peggy Webber as the Wife, whose fate will hold you in suspense. Continuing our night of fright, we present the radio show "Quiet Please" in the episode "Don't Tell Me About Halloween", originally broadcast on October 27th, 1947. In this eerie episode, written by Wyllis Cooper and narrated by Ernest Chappell, who also stars as the protagonist, we explore a hauntingly unique take on Halloween. The story follows a man cursed with immortality who confronts the spirits of the dead, on Halloween night, seeking a way to end his eternal wandering. The chilling ambiance and evocative dialogue are sure to captivate those who dare to listen. Tune in to Vintage Classic Radio this Friday night to experience these classic masterpieces of radio horror, brilliantly brought to life by a cast of seasoned actors. IN THIS EPISODE: In 2016, there was something of a folk panic in Yorkshire, northern England, following reported sightings of an eight-foot werewolf with a very human face. It's known as the Beast of Barmston Drain – but most people call him “Old Stinker”. (Old Stinker) *** A man in Louisiana has a magnetic personality. Not for the ladies… but for the paranormal. (Paranormal Magnet Man) *** A truck-driver was not prepared for what he experienced one summer night at a tiny truck stop in the middle of nowhere... hardly the place where one would expect a ghost… if that's what it even was. (Phantom of the Truck Stop) *** No animal had ever made such sounds. Neither the lions of East Africa nor the angry bulls. At times, it sounded like a veritable herd of wild beasts orchestrated by Satan had formed a hellish choir. And that was only a small part of the demonic possession of a girl named Clara. (Demonic Possession In South Africa) *** Want to live on the cheap in Tokyo, Japan? It's easy to do – if you don't mind living with a ghost or two. (Tokyo Ghosts) *** Cryptozoologists are abuzz about recent sightings of a creature seen in the lakes of Connemara in Ireland. The creature is rumored to be up to 30 feet long, with a mane of hair running along its back. Is it a yet undiscovered species of fish? A giant eel? A cousin to the Loch Ness monster in Scotland – or even perhaps a living dinosaur? No one has yet been able to answer the question – but recently monster hunters from around the globe came together in Ireland to try and find answers. (The Giant Eels of Connemara) *** For decades, mountain hikers have been reporting strange things happening on Mount Everest while scaling to the top. Weird events and encounters that could only be described as supernatural. (The Paranormal of Mount Everest) *** High school teacher Pamela Smart fell in love. Unfortunately, she fell in love with a 15-year-old student… and that is only the beginning of this horrible story. (High School Homicide) *** Weirdo family member, Josh Marinkovic, tells an eerie true experience that would shake anyone to the core. (Oh, He's Not Home) *** Weirdo family member Cass tells her story of a disturbing dream, a sick friend, and the temptation to sell her soul in order to save her. IN THIS EPISODE: A man calling himself Roland T. Owen checked into room 1046 of the Hotel President in Kansas City, Missouri, on January 2, 1935. In just two days' time, he would be dead. But no one knows who killed him, and it has become one of history's most popular mysteries – The Mystery of Room 1046. (The Mystery of Room 1046) *** Ghosts are spooky – but zombies are even worse. But what if you came across a ghost zombie? That's exactly the terror Scandinavian Vikings had to deal with! (Ghost Zombie of the Vikings) *** Can you raise someone in a way to create a phobia within them? Sure, that would be cruel and inhumane to do – but is it possible? That's what a couple of behaviorists wanted to find out… and so they went about studying on it by experimenting on a tiny child. (The Little Albert Experiment) *** Did a woman accidentally kill her husband because of a Bugs Bunny cartoon… or was it murder? It's the bizarre case of Linda Duffey Gwozdz. (The Looney Tunes Murderess) *** "The voice sounded close, yet at the same time, so far away. It was the most pitiful and horrifying cry I had ever heard." That's how a seasoned paranormal investigator described what they heard in an abandoned asylum. (A Ghost Encounter In a Forsaken Asylum) *** We'll also take a look at a few asylums that are said to be so creepy, so haunted, that you would never want to be locked in there – day or night. (Five Haunted Asylums) *** If you're a fan of the movie “Ferris Bueler's Day Off” you might remember the “Sausage King of Chicago” scene. That person was fictional of course, and the title was played for laughs. But have you ever heard of the Sausage Ghost of Chicago? That too may sound like it was made-up for laughs – but no, the Sausage Ghost of Chicago is a story that is all too true. Peter Lorre is an actor with such a distinctive voice and presence that even now, 60 years after his death, he's still instantly identifiable. It's surprising he didn't do more radio dramas, but he did host and star in "Mystery In The Air" in 1947. As a summer replacement show, there were only 17 episodes, and only 8 or so recordings exist -- so Project Audion asked Pete Lutz to create a NEW Mystery in the Air script. The result is both light-hearted and supernaturally spooky, and thanks to our transcontinental cast of talented voice actors, sounds just like an unheard episode from this terrific vintage series: Pete Lutz in Texas Lothar Tuppan in California Jeff Billard in Massachusetts Geri Elliff in Texas Angela Young in Florida John Bell in Alabama Bob Beaumont in California with Larry Groebe (in TX) handling sounds, music, and production

Enjoy two free mystery episodes of Mystery In the Air w/ Peter Lorre A) 8/28/47 Beyond Good and Evil B) 9/4/47 The Mask of Medusa Peter Lorre had always wanted to star in his own dramatic radio program so when The Abbott & Costello Show took its 1947 summer vacation, NBC and advertising agency William Esty & Company, granted his wish. They turned over the microphones to Lorre as star of thirteen episodes of a chiller series titled Mystery in the Air. Cut from the cloth of tales woven by the imaginations of some of the most famous authors in history, Mystery in the Air, brilliantly brought horror classics to life, including “The Telltale Heart,” “The Marvelous Barastro,” “The Lodger,” “The Horla,” “The Black Cat”, “Crime and Punishment” and “The Mask of Medusa”. Lorre delivered tour de force performances of men tortured and driven by dark impulses. The supporting casts were the best in the business, including Agnes Moorehead, Peggy Webber, Russell Thorson, John Brown, Hans Conried, Howard Culver, Jane Morgan, Luis Van Rooten, Herb Butterfield and Ben Wright. The announcer was Henry Morgan, who we would all know later as Harry Morgan from TV's Dragnet and M*A*S*H. Sponsors were Camel Cigarettes and Prince Albert pipe tobacco. The series was produced and directed by Don Bernard and Cal Kuhl. Mystery in the Air was a collection of dark and compelling stories culled from the four corners of literature. Unfortunately for Peter Lorre fans, the series did not continue in the fall following its initial summer cycle.

Tonight we shall hear the story of the terrible events that lead to the sentence of death by hanging of Charles. He was married quite young and both he and his wife-loved animals. Ladies and Gentlemen, there are two kinds of stories, those you can take to bed with you and relax at ease and then there’s the other kind. Tonight’s story is the other kind. I still do not know if it was the shadow of the madness to which the author himself so tragically succumbed or if there really was a an evil summoning that could not be seen or described. This show, featuring the inimitable Peter Lorre, ran in the late 1940s to generally favorable reviews. This particular episode, a clever and authentic retelling of the classic novel Crime and Punishment, is one of only eight I know can be found online or in any of the popular collections.
Happy holidays! Whether you're a Christmas-er, an Hanuakkat, or a Kwanza-hut, Succotash is damned glad to have you. "It's the time of miracles," said Alan Rickman's Hans Gruber in Die Hard and it's true. First of all, we're back in Studio P for the first time in many episodes. So good to have engineer/producer Joe Paulino back behind the controls. Not to mention Bill Haywatt, who has a fresh installment of Boozin' With Bill on tap this time around. Even Kenny Durgess, our booth assistant, is on the job and it's a great way to ring in the holiday season. I wanted to do something special for the holidays, so Epi44 is our Succotash Christmas Card to the illustrious members of the Pod Mafia. Who ARE the Pod Mafia? A loose collective of podcasters who have struck up a virtual (and sometimes actual) friendship via the web, and have actively worked to cross-promote each others' podcasts. I am pleased and honored to have been dubbed the Podfather by this crew, although I'm aware it's a precarious perch at best and someone else could shake me loose at any time. Nonetheless, for the meantime, as Podfather, it's my pleasure to offer up clips from the assembled members of the Pod Mafia this episode. One of the best things about getting to do an epi of Succotash in Studio P is that it puts us in proximity to Bill Haywatt's wet bar and give us a chance to present Boozin' With Bill. This time about, that workhorse of radio drops a great post New Year's hangover drink on us which he calls Harry Of The Dog That Bit You. It's named for Harry Morgan, with whom Bill worked on an old radio show called Mystery In The Air, and it's a real doozy. Burst O' Durst Our resident raging moderate, Will Durst, sounds off about gun control in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School nightmare. Holiday Reminder Show some love to your favorite podcasts by hopping up to iTunes and both rating and reviewing those same podcasts with lots of stars and glowing praise. Then do the same on Stitcher Smart Radio - go up to their website, search for your faves and give them a big ol "thumbs up!" Every little bit helps, and the more often you do it, the better their visibility gets on the charts. Sing A Song Of Yuletide I'm happy to be able to feature Is A Chupacabra Kosher?, a new song off the Season's Geekings EP by friend-of-Succotash John Anealio. Jump over to his website to give yourself a stocking stuffer: A free download of his holiday album! Happy Holidays From Henderson's Pants! We have a commercial this episode from our friends at Henderson's. More than a commercial, it's a tale done in the style of the popular Christmas poem, 'Twas The Night Before Christmas. Enjoy! A Good Run Our friend Caleb Bacon, host of The Gentlemen's Club podcast, has run down the curtain on that show after 154 episodes. I give him a final salute in the form of a review in This Week In Comedy Podcasts on Splitsider.com but don't despair— Caleb is already prepping to return in February 2013 with his new podcast, Man School! In his farewell episode, Caleb is interviewed as much as he interviews by his guest, That Chris Gore of PodCRASH podcast fame. The Clips As I mentioned above, all the clips this week save one are from members of the Pod Mafia. Dylan Brody's Neighbor's CouchAlthough Darren Staley is not a member of the Pod Mafia, I think he would be if he trafficked with out kind more. Last epi I though I was going to get to his clip but it didn't happen. So I promised him we'd give him pole position this time around. In addition to being a supporter Succotash his show's audio audio quality has gotten steadily better since I first started listening. And his guests are often, amazing, quite celebrity-statured. This clip features part of his chat with Rosanne Barr. Royal & DoodallTommy Royal of the Royal & Doodall show is – I'm pretty sure – the bloke responsible for coining not just the Pod Mafia name, but also for dubbing yours truly the Podfather. Unfortunately, Tommy is not in the show I'm clipping this episode. It seems he's been replace by Lady Isabel P., who co-hosts this installment with Angus Doodall. Don't miss their Christmas Panto show which should I have role in. See if you can pick out my voice — I’m an audio chameleon. Don't Quit Your DaycastEd Wallick from Don’t Quit Your Daycast is not just a member of the Pod Mafia but was inspired, in part, do put his own podcast together after hearing Succotash. He just had his one-year-a-versary show, where he ranted – Ed loves to rant – ranted about Thanksgiving with guests Taylor Ripley (aka @TurkReno) and Tom Bevis of the Destination Asphyxiation podcast. (We also have a Christmas Greeting called into the Succotash Hotline by Ed!) Destination AsphyxiationSince we have Ed Wallick and Tom Bevis in the same room – Tom was up from Southern California visiting Ed in Northern California, who turns out to be his uncle – let’s listen for the first time to a clip from Tom’s Destination Asphyxiation show. Oh, look – it’s Ed Wallick, ranting some more! The DHead FactorThough Jabs at The DHead Factor has other fellows who occasionally do the show with him in Canberra, Australia – like #FUJosh – he’s definitely the body and soul of the show and a stalwart member of the Pod Mafia. As the guy who kicked of International Succotash Show Day on December 4th – I hope you all celebrated it – he’s always saluted here at Studio P. Tiny Little Odd ConversationsMerry Christmas to Travis and Brandi Clark, the hosts of Tiny Odd Conversations. They were almost out of the Pod Mafia before it began toward the end last year because Travis was feeling like there was nowhere else to go with the show. I helped talk him off the ledge, and glad to have done so because we may never have gotten that great cookie recipe from Chef Eddie Vetter otherwise. Here’s part of a conversation that Travis and Brandi had on their Not The Holiday Special episode, about a homeless Santa they came across. Pissed Off ManI THINK Gavin from The Pissed Off Man Show is in the Pod Mafia. But I didn’t want to take a chance that he isn’t because he IS the Pissed Off Man. So Merry Christmas, Gee, and for a guy who says he doesn’t have much to be pissed off about on the last day of existence, according to the Mayan calendar, he still gets a few shots in… From Out Of NowhereThe From Out of Nowhere podcast – or FOONcast – with Eric Furniss and Rob Kern is really a music podcast but they’ve got a sense of humor and Eric is very active on Twitter as a member of the Pod Mafia. They’ve been doing their show from a local bar because their studio got damaged by Hurrican Sandy. The show I grabbed to clip from, however, actually features Rob in a bar interview he did awhile back with Motörhead's Lemmy Kilmister and Matt Sorum. Sorry, Eric – I was in a hurry! We’ll get your voice in there next time. So that's who's in our Christmas card to the members of the Pod Mafia. I hope I remembered everybody. And I know there are some folks in the Pod Mafia Irregulars that I wanted to clip this episode but there just wasn’t time. I WILL clip you guys next epi, but in the meantime, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to the folks behind Bonnandobo, The Brit And The American, Clutch & Wiggle, The Random Variety Show and Toggle The Switch! Happy holidays to everybody (especially those of you who have discovered, listened to, and enjoy our show!), and may you all have a great new year, in which you should remember, for the sake of all that's holy, to pass the Succotash! A radio play of Edgar Alan Poe's short story, the Black Cat. The story is one that starts at the end, and a man who is sentenced to the gallows. In flashback, Peter Lorre recounts the story of how he arrived to this point. Peter Lorre is a man who loved animals. One day his wife brings home a little black kitten. The kitten grew, and became the favorite, but somehow the man's temperament changed. The once happy couple has been torn apart by the bursts of anger and hatred from the man. Cat lovers be warned. irrational behavior increases until the man treats the cat mean, and eventually kills the once beloved cat. See I told you to be warned. Soon tragedies multiply. Their house burns down. Nothing is left, except one wall with what appears to be the image of the black cat burned into it. The man goes to a pub to drown his sorrows, and finds another black to adopt. Peter Lorre plays the tormented, and unstable mental state with all it's mood swings to perfection. He loves the cat, he hates the cat. The more affectionate the cat is, the more Peter grows to hate it. Finally, he snaps, and tries to kill this cat. In trying to stop his raging, the wife steps in. Only to be struck and killed instead. To cover his deed, he buried his wife in his basement, and bricked it over. The madness abates, but the story continues when police investigate the woman's disappearance. It's almost the perfect crime. Almost. Remember how the show started? A spooky, creepy, classic tale you won't want to miss. And just what is David the Retrobot up to anyway? Bonus Tracks: Tom Lehrer. Rickity Tickity Tin. From the 1960's, and not from the days of old time radio, but it fits our spooky Halloween theme.
Peter Lorre stars in the Mystery In The Air production of E.A Poe's ''The Black Cat''.
This mostly faithful adaption of Edgar Allen Poe's classic tale of intemperance, murder, and supernatural justice features the unmistakable voice talent of Peter Lorre in the starring role. Lorre is at his manic best as he draws the listener along on his journey into madness at the hands--or should we say paws--of a mysterious ebony feline named 'Pluto'. Mystery In The Air was an limited-run anthology series, which originally aired in the summer of 1947. Each episode featured Peter Lorre in a different spooky or suspenseful tale, "culled from the pages of world literature". Mystery In The Air only ran for eight episodes, but each is an audio gem in its own right.
Mystery in the Air was a Summer series consisting of mystery / horror shows. The series was hosted by Peter Lorre who also played the title role in a few of the shows. The shows were well done and all entertaining! This collection is also included in the Peter Lorre Collection.
