Settle in your best (and only) coffin, grab a drink or twelve and join us for “The Comedy of Terrors”. In film in which we hear possibly the only use of the phrase “Toss Pot” outside of the UK; Orangey displays why he was considered one of the finest cactors of his generation; and Osgood Fielding III gives the best scream this side of a Tom and Jerry cartoon. Sadly, this is the last time that Vincent Price and Peter Lorre demonstrated their magnificent comedy double act as part of this amazing ensemble with Joyce Jameson, Boris Karloff and Basil Rathbone, all of whom totally embrace the grotesque insanity of their characters and the tale itself. “The Comedy of Terrors” is a real refinement of the dark vein of humour the various cast members had begun exploring with Roger Corman in the Poe adaptations “Tales of Terror” and “The Raven”, but this time, it's the legendary Jacques Tourneur behind the camera, with an original script from the pen of the great Richard Matheson, both of whom mould this original gem of Gothic Black Comedy. Sadly, “The Comedy of Terrors” failed to perform at the box office, and with Lorre's death only a few months after release, it closed a chapter on what could have been a far more interesting direction for producers AIP. Professionals have been discussing the concept of nurse burnout and how it affects the profession for at least 50 years. Dr. Lorre Laws, whose Ph.D. is in nursing, realized from her own experiences and from interviewing and speaking to other nurses that the issue has been insufficiently addressed. She decided to rectify this. The result was her book, Nursing Our Healers: A Recovery Guide for Nurse Trauma and Burnout. Lorre has a deep understanding of the connection between burnout and trauma and believes that, while some sources of burnout are inevitable, many require solving systemic changes. Lack of equipment, for example, forced her to catch a falling patient at the cost of three herniated discs. She also points out that when nurses report abuse by patients, they are often gaslighted, asked how they could have prevented the incident. This literally adds insult to injury. This issue is relevant to LNCs for a number of reasons. Career transition can also be traumatic. The LNC may be somewhat removed from the immediacy of a plaintiff's traumas, but they must address them, often in a pain and suffering report. They may be subject to the frustrations of an attorney having problems. In addition, they may be exposed to a burned-out, traumatized nurse who made a mistake as a result. In conclusion, Lorre offers two 30-second practices that she recommends doing whenever possible to reduce stress and burnout levels. You can do them anywhere, and she hopes you will. It seems that the denizens of New London, Connecticut have real issues with forgiveness and letting go. Every year they throw a bizarre festival castigating the infamous American Revolutionary War-era traitor Benedict Arnold for giving information to the British forces leading them to raid and burn New London in 1781. The annual event consists of parades with revelers wearing tricorn hats, carrying mock bayonets and torches and other commemorations all culminating in the burning of Arnold in effigy after 242 years. Really, no really! So that got us thinking about how anger, resentment, and hatred impact our wellbeing and what the benefits of forgiveness may offer us.
