Dr. Jenkins sits down with rattlesnake expert Mike Cardwell for a deep dive into one of North America's most fascinating and misunderstood species—the Mohave Rattlesnake. Mike's path is anything but ordinary: a childhood passion for snakes led to a 30-year career in law enforcement, before he returned to science to study rattlesnakes full-time. Together, they explore the natural history of the Mohave Rattlesnake—where they live, what they eat, how they move, and how they reproduce. The conversation then turns to one of the most intriguing aspects of the species: venom. Mike explains how venom characteristics vary across their range and shares key findings from his own studies on populations with dramatically different venom types. They wrap up by diving into his book on Mohave Rattlesnakes as well as what new discoveries will appear in the upcoming second edition. Spiders like warm dark places and the inside of your mouth sure fits that description. Gross as it sounds, if the story's true, it seems to be mostly harmless. But what if it wasn't? What if you swallowed a spider that wasn't just venomous, but the most toxic spider in the world? Let's find out! But please, please, don't try this at home. Do not eat live venomous spiders! The Rich Zeoli Show- Full Show (09/17/2025): 3:05pm- Krasner Ramps Up Vitriolic Language. During a town hall event on Tuesday, Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner said of Republicans: “fascists are going to be fascist” and abhorrently accused the party of not believing in racial or gender equality. While other public officials have turned down the heated rhetoric following the murder of Charlie Kirk, Krasner seems to be embarrassing venomous, purposefully divisive language. 3:30pm- Susan Crabtree—RealClearPolitics National Political Correspondent & Author of the book, “Fools Gold: The Radicals, Con Artists, and Traitors Who Killed the California Dream and Now Threaten Us All”—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss her two concerning Secret Service reports for Real Clear Politics, “Secret Service Faces New Scrutiny After Agent Cheers Charlie Kirk's Murder” and “Secret Service Missed Glock in Bag at Trump Golf Course.” You can find them here: https://www.realclearpolitics.com/authors/susan_crabtree/. 4:05pm- Cliff Maloney—Citizens Alliance CEO & PA CHASE Founder—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss the loss of his friend Charlie Kirk. Plus, DeAngelis reacts to Weingarten baselessly calling him “weird” and a “stalker” simply for advocating for school choice. She also accuses DeAngelis of being “obsessed.” He hilariously responds: “No, Randi Weingarten! I don't want to date you!!” 4:50pm- On Monday, October 13th at 7:30pm—Rich will host New York Times best-selling author Jack Carr at the Zlock Performing Arts Center (at Bucks County Community College) in Newtown, PA. They'll sit down for an engaging discussion about Jack's latest thriller, Cry Havoc—the newest installment in his acclaimed James Reece series. Known for his real-world military experience and gripping, action-packed storytelling, Jack Carr brings an unmatched authenticity to the world of political and military thrillers. For tickets visit: 1210wpht.com. 5:00pm- David Gelman— Criminal Defense Attorney, Former Prosecutor, & a Surrogate for Donald Trump's Legal Team—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss Utah County District Attorney Jeff Gray's Tuesday press conference where he announced charges against Tyler Robinson and confirmed he's seeking the death penalty for the murder of Charlie Kirk. Gray stated: “The defendant is believed to have targeted Charlie Kirk based on Charlie Kirk's political expression and did so knowing that children were present and would witness the homicide." 5:40pm- Embarrassing: Sen. Cory Booker lost his mind during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing with FBI Director Kash Patel—at one point continually screaming, “I'm not afraid of you!” 5:50pm- Congresswoman Lucy McBath (D-GA) accused FBI Director Kash Patel of making the U.S. less safe under his leadership. Patel rejected her accusation, destroying her claims with facts: “If we're failing...how are we arresting 23,000 violent felons? 2x as many as this time last year. How are we seizing 1,500 kg of meth, 25% increase from last year. We captured four top ten FBI most wanted from around the world in 7 months. That's more than the entirety of the last administration. We put 1,500 child predators in prison. We dismantled 300 human trafficking networks. So, which is it? You don't like me, that's fine. But don't you dare disparage the men and women of the FBI that are producing record results in historic fashion to protect this country. They are kicking ass ...

Have you heard about this, a Teen's First Turkey Hunt Sparks A  Felony Charge and Community Outcry? We've got the scoop. September thru early October brings about pests of the slithery poisonous nature, beware, and have you heard, Justin Boots has revived an iconic style?! Join radio hosts Rebecca Wanner aka ‘BEC' and Jeff ‘Tigger' Erhardt (Tigger & BEC) with the latest in Outdoors & Western Lifestyle News! Season 5, Episode 254 Teen's First Turkey Hunt Sparks Felony Charge and Community Outcry  According to Outdoorlife.com, A Georgia teen is facing a felony charge for what many thought was a simple spring turkey hunt gone right. But the wild turkey he tagged after church Sunday, in late April on his family's 11-acre property may have belonged to a neighbor—who also happened to, now be, his former teacher. The two properties are separated by a 70-acre horse farm. After the teen, then 16, shared photos online of his first turkey—a moment of pride for any young hunter—his now former teacher claimed the bird was actually her pet. Days later, the teen found himself charged with aggravated cruelty to animals, a felony. More Details: The hunt took place on April 28th, 2025, and by all accounts, the bird was on his family's land. On April 30th, a Georgia DNR game warden visited the property following a complaint made by neighbor/former teacher, where the parents allowed a search which found one shotgun shell case, feathers at the location of harvest, confirmed it was a legal hunting ground and found no signs of baiting or violations in which the DNR concluded it would not file any charges as the turkey in question is not protected. However this DNR agent did advise the parents that other charges could be brought through the sheriff's office or civilly. The parents stand behind their son's claim to have had no idea the turkey might've been domestic—or belonged to anyone. After harvesting the turkey, the teen brought it to a taxidermist and went about his day. The complaint by the teacher is that the teen knowingly killed the turkey she claimed was her pet, then bragged about it online and at school. Statements given by the accuser during her in-school testimony June 4th tribunal hearing, according to her testimony there were no identifying markers on the bird, such as a band on its leg to indicate it was a pet.  The parents don't dispute that their son harvested a turkey on their property.  But, they say, he did not know it belonged to anyone when he shot it.   But the fallout has been anything but normal. Felony charges were brought up against the teen, resulting in his suspension from school. He had to move out of state to live with relatives, and is now waiting for his day in juvenile court. A plea deal was offered if he admitted guilt and paid $150 for the turkey—but his family says he didn't knowingly do anything wrong, and they stood by him. The case has sparked debate in the small town of Waverly Hall, Georgia, and drawn national attention from hunters and supporters who say the situation has gone too far. With a court date now set for later this fall, the young hunter remains in limbo—his first turkey, once a rite of passage, now at the center of a high-stakes legal battle. We'll keep you updated as the story unfolds. For now, many are left asking: was this a crime, or just a kid's first hunt caught up in a neighborly dispute? To clarify, in Georgia, they hunt for a wild Eastern Turkey. The turkey harvested was found to be a domestic Narragansett turkey. Difference in Appearance: Narragansett Turkeys, a domestic breed: have a mixed feather coloration: black, gray, tan and white which gives an almost bronze-like look, a bit more white and lighter coloring compared to an Eastern wild turkey.  READ THE FULL STORY HERE, Reference: https://www.outdoorlife.com/hunting/georgia-teen-turkey-felony-charge/ STAY ALERT: Venomous Snake Season Is Here! It's that time of year—baby copperheads are active, and they're born fully venomous. One mother can have 8–10 babies, often staying close by. These small snakes sport greenish-yellow tail tips on their first-year plumage—an identifying trait worth noting. Though not aggressive, copperheads will defend themselves if stepped on or touched unexpectedly. Keep a watchful eye in shady, damp spots around your yard—think under flowerpots, toys, pet bowls, or bushes. Always look before you reach! Fall brings more snake movement—prairie rattlers and western diamondbacks become active as temperatures cool. Be alert, stay safe, and remind everyone in the family to check before grabbing or leaning. Western Lifestyle News The Return of a Western Classic: Justin Boots' Roper Revival They're back, folks! Fringe… Follow Miranda Lambert or Lainey Wilson or generational icon Reba McEntire… Fringe has been a staple over the decades, front and center this year. On the men's side, how many are loving seeing the retro shirts, the pearl buttons. Those pieces that were your Dad's… maybe even your own back in the day.. Time to dust them off!   The other trend rising in popularity is the Roughout look on cowboy boots? Your thoughts? Personally, I'm not a fan… To me roughout belongs to the gear, specifically saddles… or maybe a stretch would be jackets. In this episode, Elixir Wizard Charles Suggs sits down with Victor Björklund to map out the landscape of Python integration in Elixir applications. From HTTP APIs and external services to embedded runtimes like ErlPort, PythonX, and the Venomous library, we evaluate each approach's impact on performance, coupling, and developer experience. Victor draws on real-world examples like Scrapy-based web scraping and the Swedish BankID authentication to illustrate best practices for error handling, process pooling, and effective telemetry across the BEAM boundary. We also tackle the practical side of deployment: packaging Python dependencies in Mix releases, mocking Python calls in tests, and deploying multi-language apps with confidence. Wrapping up, Victor shares his wishlist for even tighter interop (think multiple Python interpreter instances per VM) and offers low-risk entry points, like automating monthly reports, for teams ready to explore the power of Python's ecosystem within Elixir. Key topics discussed in this episode: Integration methods: HTTP APIs, ports, ErlPort, PythonX, Venomous Performance vs. coupling trade-offs across interop patterns Managing the Global Interpreter Lock (GIL) with process pools Leveraging mature Python libraries (Scrapy, BankID, etc.) Error handling strategies across BEAM↔Python boundaries Testing mixed-language systems: mocks and integration tests Packaging and deploying Python alongside Elixir releases Monitoring and telemetry for multi-language pipelines Functional programming advantages in Elixir workflows Tool selection guidance by project requirements Future possibilities: multiple Python interpreters in one VM Community resources for Python–Elixir interop help Links mentioned: jawdropping.io https://cplusplus.com/ https://www.python.org/ https://react.dev/ https://nodejs.org/en https://erlport.org/ https://hexdocs.pm/pythonx/Pythonx.html https://pyrlang.github.io/Pyrlang/ Python GIL (Global Interpreter Lock): https://realpython.com/python-gil/ https://github.com/devinus/poolboy https://hexdocs.pm/venomous/Venomous.html Try-catch https://syntaxdb.com/ref/python/try-catch https://www.scrapy.org/ https://www.bankid.com/en/ https://www.phoenixframework.org/ https://www.tzeyiing.com/posts/using-a-hunky-poolboy-to-manage-your-python-erlport-processes-in-elixir/ https://medium.com/stuart-engineering/how-we-use-python-within-elixir-486eb4d266f9 https://x.com/bjorklundvictor https://victorbjorklund.com/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/victorbjorklund/ hello@victorbjorklund.com

Analysis of over 70 spider venoms finds potency depends on a spider's diet Photo Credit: Andrew Downes, Xposure, A salmon pink tarantula Embargoed until 0001hrs Wednesday May 21, 2025: A new study by researchers at the University of Galway's School of Natural Sciences has revealed why some spiders possess venom that is far more potent than others. Why are some spiders are more venomous than others? By analysing the venoms of more than 70 different spider species, the team explored whether factors such as body size, prey type, and hunting method, including the use of webs, could explain the wide variation in venom strength. The research was published today in the journal Biology Letters. While spiders are infamous for the widespread arachnophobia they induce for a multitude of reasons, including erratic movements, eight spindly legs, sticky webs, and most notably, their venomous bites, the actual effects can vary dramatically depending on the species. For instance, a bite from the Brazilian wandering spider can result in serious medical complications, whereas the venom of a giant house spider typically poses no threat to humans, raising the question, what drives such differences in venom potency? The researchers discovered that diet is one of the most important drivers influencing the potency of spider venom. They found that spider venoms are what is called prey-specific, meaning if a spider primarily hunts insects, its venom is likely to be particularly effective at killing insects in general, such as crickets and flies, but far less effective against other non-insect prey, like small mammals. Lead author Dr Keith Lyons from University of Galway's School of Natural Sciences, said: "Our results show that spider venoms have evolved to be especially potent when tested on animals found in their diet in the wild. This may explain why species that are known to occasionally prey upon small mammals, such as the Brazilian wandering spider or Black widow, have venoms that can cause medically significant effects in us humans, whereas species that only prey on invertebrates, such as the Giant house spider, have evolved venoms that target invertebrate physiologies rather than our own, posing little threat to us." The researchers also tested whether the use of webs to capture prey was related to the potency or volume of a spider's venom. Dr Kevin Healy, Senior author and Head of the Macroecology lab at the University's School of Natural Sciences, said: "We predicted that web-hunting spiders might have less potent venoms because they may have evolved to rely more on their webs to immobilise prey. Surprisingly, we found no relationship between whether a spider used their web and the potency of their venom, suggesting that webs are likely important for restraining prey in web-hunters, regardless of how deadly their venom is. "This study helps us to understand the evolution of spider venoms and aids in our understanding of why some spiders, such as the Noble False widow become invasive species in some parts of the world, or how some venoms may be of particular interest for future drug discovery, or the development of pest species-specific, pollinator-friendly insecticides." Dr Michel Dugon, Head of the Venom Systems Lab, Ryan Institute, University of Galway, said: "By understanding the fundamental drivers of venom evolution we can better predict the types of biomolecules in spider venoms that have yet to be explored for drug discovery and why some species of spiders are more likely to become invasive species." Thanks to Nora and BlueTheChicken for suggesting the inland taipan this week! The inland taipan in its summer colors [picture by AllenMcC. - Own work, CC BY-SA 3.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=4442037]: Show transcript: Welcome to Strange Animals Podcast. I'm your host, Kate Shaw. This week we have a suggestion by Nora and BluetheChicken, who both wanted to learn about the inland taipan. Is it really the most venomous snake in the world? Let's find out, from a safe distance. The inland taipan is native to some parts of Australia, specifically in dry areas around the border of Queensland and South Australia. In the summer it's lighter in color, tan or yellowy-brown, and in winter it's dark brown or black with a lighter belly. Its head is usually darker in color than the rest of its body, and even in summer it usually has darker scales that make a zig-zaggy pattern on its back and sides. It can grow more than eight feet long, or 2.5 meters. It eats small animals, especially Dasyurids, which are members of the family Dasyuridae. Dasyurids are marsupials and include larger animals like the Tasmanian devil and the quoll, but those particular species don't live where the inland taipan does. The inland taipan mainly eats species that are often referred to as marsupial mice and marsupial rats, although they're not related to rodents at all. It also eats introduced placental mammals like actual rats and house mice. The inland taipan was described in 1879 from two specimens captured in northwestern Victoria. Then it wasn't seen again by scientists until 1972, when someone in Queensland sent a snake head to the herpetologist Jeanette Covacevich. Most people would consider that a threat, but she was delighted to get a mystery snake head in the mail. She grabbed a colleague and they hurried to Queensland to look for the snake. They found 13 of them, and to their utter delight, they turned out to be the long-lost inland taipan! Part of the reason it wasn't rediscovered sooner is that everyone thought it lived in Victoria, when it's actually still not been seen in that state since 1879. The inland taipan is often called the fierce snake because if it feels threatened, it will strike repeatedly and very fast. Its venom is incredibly toxic and takes effect incredibly quickly. It's a neurotoxin that can cause convulsions, paralysis, kidney failure, cerebral hemorrhage, heart failure, and lots more horrible symptoms. People have died from the venom, but unless you keep an inland taipan in captivity and handle it a lot, you don't have to worry about one biting you. It's very shy in the wild and will hide in rock crevices or cracks in dry soil rather than attack, plus it lives in remote areas of Australia that most people never visit. Even in captivity it's usually calm and not aggressive, which leads to reptile keepers and scientists not always taking the correct precautions for handling it. Luckily, with quick treatment and antivenin, most people recover from an inland taipan bite. So is it the most venomous snake in the world? The inland taipan's venom hasn't been fully studied yet, and scientists haven't fully studied the venom of many other snakes either, but as far as we know right now, yes. The inland taipan is the most venomous snake known, even compared to sea snakes. You may be wondering if anything would dare eat the inland taipan since it's so venomous. A big perentie monitor lizard, which we talked about in episode 384, will eat lots of different snakes, including the inland taipan. A snake called the mulga, also referred to as the king brown snake, will eat the inland taipan. The mulga usually only eats small snakes, but it's immune to the venom of most Australian snakes and can grow up to 11 feet long, or 3.3 meters. The mulga lives throughout most of Australia and is venomous itself. Even though its venom isn't all that toxic, it will bite repeatedly and even chew to inject even more venom.

In this special crossover episode, we're spotlighting Buffalo's 1973 Volcanic Rock—a raw, proto-metal gem that helped shape the sound of 80s Metal and 90s Rock. With primal riffs and fearless energy, Buffalo laid the groundwork for the heaviness embraced by bands like Metallica and Soundgarden. Picture it: the airwaves dominated by Dark Side of the Moon, Zeppelin's Houses of the Holy, and Sabbath's Sabbath Bloody Sabbath. Rock was entering its teenage years, shedding its innocence for something darker, more primal. Halfway around the world, Australia was a raw, untamed frontier where danger lurked in every shadow. Venomous creatures, desolate outback stretches, and a wild, unrelenting spirit shaped the people and their art. It was here, in this harsh and unpredictable landscape, that Buffalo unleashed their sophomore album, Volcanic Rock, on Vertigo Records. Like the searing sun, it scorched a path for heavy music, standing defiantly alongside its better-known contemporaries.Buffalo was no Zeppelin or Sabbath knockoff. This Brisbane-to-Sydney transplant created their own blend of bluesy grit and proto-metal menace. Formed initially as “Head,” their pivot to Buffalo was guided by a manager who believed that bands starting with “B” (Beatles, Beach Boys) were bound for success. A dart on a map landed on Buffalo, and thus began a name and sound etched in volcanic fury.Heavy as Hell, Raw as the OutbackVolcanic Rock lived up to its name—primitive, thunderous, and unpredictable. With Dave Tice's raw vocal delivery leading the charge, and guitarist John Baxter's primal riffage painting sonic landscapes, the album combined blues-rock roots with a proto-doom intensity that felt otherworldly. Songs like “Freedom” deliver nine-minute odysseys, meandering through psychedelic jam territory before crashing back into riff-laden crescendos.Yet, the record wasn't just music—it was spectacle. Its controversial cover art—a volcano shaped like a female torso spewing lava—reflected the wild creativity and raw edge of the band's ethos. It was shocking then and remains iconic now, an image as bold as the sound within.Misfits in a Golden AgeDespite their innovative sound, Buffalo never quite broke through. Opening for heavyweights like Black Sabbath and Rainbow, they faced the mischief of tour mates like Ritchie Blackmore, who infamously sabotaged their set. Still, they soldiered on, creating an album that influenced generations of grunge, stoner rock, and doom metal—long before the labels existed. But Buffalo's story is also one of commercial failure and creative frustration. Pushed by their label to pivot toward radio-friendly fare, they resisted, choosing instead to blaze their own trail. By the time their final album, Average Rock 'n' Roller, hit shelves in 1977, the band was running on fumes. Yet, Volcanic Rock remains their defining statement, a timeless blueprint for heavy rock adventurers. The Legacy: Why Volcanic Rock Still MattersSo why revisit Volcanic Rock in 2025? Because it's an artifact of pure, unadulterated rock energy—a raw, imperfect gem that prefigures everything from Kyuss to Queens of the Stone Age. Its primal simplicity, coupled with its audacious ambition, captures the essence of a time when rock was still dangerous.Want to know more? Send us a textWe're taking a little trip to Germany in this week's episode, so pack up your lederhosen and dirndls and crosses to ward off evil. Yes, it's that kind of story. “The Nightmare Road,” by Florence Crow features a young man on a road chock full of ghoulies and ghastly sights. I looked into German folklore and found several nasty creatures, including several who lure and drown people and a bevy of different kinds of witches. But one jumped out at me (pun intended) as the most pertinent to our story. Many of Powder Valley Conservation Nature Center's 80,000 annual visitors may be surprised to know they are walking amongst Missouri's most common venomous reptile on the trails: the copperhead snake. The results of a six year study on copperheads in Powder Valley's oak hickory forest lends new insight on their population size, how they survive the extreme heat and cold, and their movement throughout the year.
