Welcome to another holiday edition of "Saturday Matinee" on Vintage Classic Radio, where we're stepping back in time to relive the golden age of radio with some of the most iconic Christmas broadcasts in history. Our journey begins with the delightful "Our Miss Brooks" in "The Magic Christmas Tree," originally aired on December 25th, 1949. In this heartwarming episode, the beloved schoolteacher Miss Brooks, played by Eve Arden, finds herself in a whimsical adventure involving a magic Christmas tree that brings unexpected joy and laughter to her and her students. The cast includes Gale Gordon as the irascible Principal Osgood Conklin, Richard Crenna as student Walter Denton, and Jane Morgan as Mrs. Davis, Miss Brooks' endearing landlady. Next, we turn the dial to NBC's "The Jell-O Show starring Jack Benny" for the episode "An Old Fashioned Christmas," which first graced the airwaves on December 20th, 1936. Jack Benny, with his legendary wit, leads an episode filled with humor and nostalgia, depicting a simpler, old-fashioned Christmas celebration. Mary Livingstone, Dennis Day, and Rochester (played by Eddie Anderson) join Benny, adding their own charm and comedy to this festive episode. Midway through our matinee, we're treated to a musical interlude with "A Crosby Christmas," featuring Bing Crosby and his family. This medley of Christmas songs showcases Crosby's timeless voice and his family's harmonious accompaniment, creating a cozy, festive atmosphere. Our festive journey continues with "The Great Gildersleeve" in the episode "Leroy Wants a Motor Scooter," first broadcasted on December 18th, 1946. In this humorous and heartwarming tale, Throckmorton P. Gildersleeve, portrayed by Harold Peary, navigates the challenges of holiday shopping when his nephew Leroy yearns for a motor scooter. The episode also stars Walter Tetley as Leroy, and Lillian Randolph as Birdie, the family's housekeeper. CBS's "Birds Eye Open House" presents a holiday special "I'll Be Home For Christmas," originally aired on October 21st, 1943. Starring the legendary Dinah Shore, this episode is a poignant reminder of the era's wartime Christmas, blending humor with heartfelt moments, capturing the essence of longing and hope during the festive season. Our penultimate feature is from NBC's "The Hall of Fame" show, with "The Christmas Stocking with Walt Disney and Friends," dating back to December 23rd, 1934. It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! Emma speaks with writer and historian Rebecca Jane Morgan to discuss their recent book Gender Heretics: Evangelicals, Feminists, and the Alliance against Trans Liberation. Then, she speaks with Jonah Walters, postdoctoral scholar at UCLA's Institute for Society and Genetics, to discuss a book compilation he co-edited entitled Only The Good Die Young: The Verdict Against Henry Kissinger, published via Jacobin and Verso Books. First, Emma runs through updates on Jake Sullivan's visit to various authoritarian utopias, Israel's indiscriminate bombing, growing backlash to Israel, Biden's bleak polling, the House impeachment inquiry, January 6th, and Floridian education action, before touching on Israel's abuse of the Two-State solution. Rebecca Jane Morgan then joins, first taking on the definition of Trans-Exclusionary Radical Feminism, before stepping back to walk through the longer history of Evangelical Christianity to trans identity, including a long period of a mixed yet positive recognition of the community – particularly with the parallels of “rebirth” – over the 20th Century. Moving into the 2000s, Morgan tackles the role of the Gender Recognition Act in the UK in igniting Evangelical backlash – largely because of its policies around same-sex marriage – whereas the US' legislative body took until the 2010s for the bathroom debate came to the fore. Rebecca concludes the conversation by walking through the particular alignment of Terfs and Evangelicals over their somatophobia towards trans people, and what that means for the fight for trans rights moving forward. Jonah Walters and Emma then explore the life and legacy of Henry Kissinger as they walk through his prevalent (and bipartisan) role in US politics, and his ideological grounding in pure American hegemony, before stepping back to assess the importance of his rise to power during the Cold War, bolstering the growth of America's capital order internationally while continuously and intentionally undermining any liberatory and anti-capitalist movements in the third world. Wrapping up, Walters parses through the obscene death count that follows Kissinger to his grave. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they talk with Eddie from Ft. Worth about culturally undermining the KKK, explore the absolute vitriol that zionists have been leveling against their students, and discuss the return of severe islamophobia in the form of fear-of-arabic-words. Tommy the Music Guy tackles some music recommendations and explores tensions between the US and Mexico, and Josh Hawley presses a judicial nomination on the ethics of being brown, plus, your calls and IMs! Finally, we wrap up with the delightful "Our Miss Brooks" radio show, in the episode "Where To Go For Thanksgiving", which first entertained audiences on November 27th, 1949. Connie Brooks, played by the incomparable Eve Arden, finds herself in a bind when her Thanksgiving plans are upended, leading to a comical quest for a place to celebrate the holiday. They turned over the microphones to Lorre as star of thirteen episodes of a chiller series titled Mystery in the Air. Cut from the cloth of tales woven by the imaginations of some of the most famous authors in history, Mystery in the Air, brilliantly brought horror classics to life, including “The Telltale Heart,” “The Marvelous Barastro,” “The Lodger,” “The Horla,” “The Black Cat”, “Crime and Punishment” and “The Mask of Medusa”. Lorre delivered tour de force performances of men tortured and driven by dark impulses. The supporting casts were the best in the business, including Agnes Moorehead, Peggy Webber, Russell Thorson, John Brown, Hans Conried, Howard Culver, Jane Morgan, Luis Van Rooten, Herb Butterfield and Ben Wright. The announcer was Henry Morgan, who we would all know later as Harry Morgan from TV's Dragnet and M*A*S*H. Sponsors were Camel Cigarettes and Prince Albert pipe tobacco. The series was produced and directed by Don Bernard and Cal Kuhl. Mystery in the Air was a collection of dark and compelling stories culled from the four corners of literature. Unfortunately for Peter Lorre fans, the series did not continue in the fall following its initial summer cycle.

The infrastructure bill making its way through the Senate doesn't include money for caregivers. What's left out of the bill, though, is what's being called “human infrastructure” — money for things like quality child care and care for elderly people and those with disabilities.Today, we're diving into one of these groups that's being left out of the bill: people who care for their partners who have disabilities. Video editor Amber Ferguson learned that in most states, if you're giving care to a partner with a disability, you cannot be compensated if you're married. And those people who aren't getting compensated for their labor are usually women. “It's just not sustainable for me to do this every single day in the way that I have been,” said Jane Morgan, who has been caring for her boyfriend largely by herself since he became quadriplegic in 2019.
