Well, Noirvember may be over, but our journey into my made-up sub-genre, atomic noir, is not. It's a cheery continuation for the holiday season. At least the next film has some humor in it, as opposed to the sadism in November's Kiss Me Deadly… Thanks for those memories Mickey Spillane! This month: released in 1984 by Universal, it's Repo Man, directed by Alex Cox on a shoestring budget of $1.5M, resulting in lasting indy fame and approbation. If you look it up on Wikipedia, they label it as science fiction black comedy. Oh, but it's so much more! So, I'm slapping on my own label of atomic/punk/noir. But, yeah, there is a science fiction twist, and it does have some stealthy humor. Why continue in this vein? Well, last month, we looked at the horror of mid-50s America, with its hide-under-the-bed fear of commies and pinkos, plus it's palpable fear of the A-bomb. That whole scene blew open with the rise of white guy rock n' roll, Kennedy kicking Nixon's ass (well, by a slim margin), the rise of the counterculture, and the narrow atomic war escape of the Cuban Missile Crisis, where the clock ticking toward Armageddon nearly struck midnight. Whew! People woke up, man! But then, that was blown away by Johnson's failure in Vietnam, the US actually losing a war, resulting in Nixon slithering into the White House for two terms (but now, the guy looks like an amateur), ending with the national nightmare of Watergate. Backlash to the Democrats and Jimmy Carter. But public trust had evaporated. Justice and higher ideals went out the window. People were tired --- they didn't believe in much at the dawn of the 80s. Except maybe in going to B-school, working on Wall Street, and having a home in the Hamptons, with a pool and jet ski. Who rode in on a white horse to burnish this turn towards Mammon? Why, Ronald Reagan. Or, as Doc Brown memorably put it in Back To The Future --- “The actor?” Website and blog: www.thosewonderfulpeople.comIG: @thosewonderfulpeopleTwitter: @FilmsInTheDark
The old standard returns! It Happened One Year is once again looking at what aired on November 3rd in 1984, checking in over a year since exploring ABC's programming! This time, Sarah & Joe delve into the hard-boiled, sexy, action dramas that were Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer, Airwolf, and Cover Up! Along the way, much discussion is made about Stacy Keach's mustache, how Oscar winner Ernest Borgnine found himself flying that helicopter, the tragedies and controversies of Cover Up, the poor adult audience subjected to early '80s television, and of course, the glorious return to It Happened One Year of show favorite, Bubba Smith.

Ayn Rand admired Mickey Spillane as a writer and a crusader: “a brilliant literary talent” and a “moral absolutist.” Several of his novels, including the two-book series about Morgan the Raider (a pirate with an enigmatic past and mysterious motivations) were set partially or completely in Miami. One character, amazed at his first glimpse of the homes and hotels of the Miami skyline, asks: “How could men with their bare hands build such a place?” This talk, in addition to describing the stories and settings of Spillane's Miami novels, will include new information about his life and parallels between his writing and the work of writers he admired, including Alexandre Dumas and Ayn Rand, whom he considered a personal friend.Recorded live on July 1 at OCON 2023
THE LEFT HAND ENDEAVOR, our celebration of classic noir, continues in abundance and we land on one wild flick involving another iconic private dick that isn't Philip Marlow. We're talking about Mickey Spillane's two fisted dirtbag protagonist “Mike Hammer” as played by Ralph Meeker In Robert Aldrich's 1955 genre-bending noir, “KISS ME DEADLY”. Some dame that looks a lot like a young Cloris Leachman gets picked up by a two-bit detective. Next thing he knows, she's dead and he's knocked out in a car and people seem to be real desperate to find something before he does. Also starring Maxine Cooper and Gaby Rodgers, KISS ME DEADLY is a unique and strange story adapted very loosely by screenwriter A.I. Bezzerides. This noir became wildly influential and we get to the bottom of why. I also recently did a cameo in a Dracula retelling called Re:Dracula. Carroll John Daly, born on September 14, 1889, in Yonkers, New York, carved an essential niche in detective fiction as a pioneering figure in the hardboiled crime genre. His early life was marked by versatility; attending the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City and engaging in roles such as usher, projectionist, and actor. Notably, he ventured into entrepreneurship, opening the first movie theater in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Unlike contemporaries like Dashiell Hammett, who drew from real-life detective work, Daly's journey into the hardboiled genre was unique. He lived a quiet life in White Plains, New York, until the age of 33 when his first crime story was published. Despite his reserved demeanor, Daly's literary creations, characterized by gritty narratives and tough protagonists, laid the foundation for the hardboiled genre. Carroll John Daly's seminal contribution to detective fiction is epitomized in "The False Burton Combs," a groundbreaking crime story published in Black Mask magazine in December 1922. While Daly may not be lauded solely for the quality of his writing, his distinction lies in being the first to amalgamate the defining elements of the dark, violent hardboiled story. The narrative precedes the works of iconic figures like Dashiell Hammett and Mickey Spillane, influencing an entire generation of crime writers. Daly's popularity in his time was unparalleled; the mention of his name on a magazine cover alone could boost sales significantly. In a Black Mask readers' poll, Daly even surpassed Hammett and Erle Stanley Gardner in popularity. Today, his writing may be viewed as a nostalgic blend of quaint and camp, but it's essential to recognize Daly's pivotal departure from mainstream detective fiction, drawing inspiration from the Wild West rather than Victorian-era mysteries. Carroll John Daly, often considered the progenitor of hardboiled crime fiction, left an indelible mark on the genre. While his writing may be seen today as a bridge between quaint and camp, Daly's significance lies in being the first to blend all the defining elements of the dark, violent hardboiled story. His popularity during his time was unparalleled, influencing not only contemporaries like Hammett but shaping the trajectory of dozens of writers who followed. By rejecting mainstream detective fiction conventions of his era, Daly drew inspiration from Westerns, featuring tough, urban heroes reminiscent of gunslingers. Creating the first hard-boiled story, "The False Burton Combs," Daly, along with Hammett, established the rules of the hardboiled genre that future writers would adhere to or break, setting the stage for a transformative era in detective fiction. We've covered several different kinds of adaptations, and the one thing that they have in common is that they're in some way faithful to their source material. This time around, not so much. And that's why this episode is titled "Subversive Adaptations." In these two films, the intent of some portion of the original story has been turned on its head to give you a similar story, but perhaps with a different point of view, or to present a different message from the source. We begin with Kiss Me Deadly, from 1955. Mike has been badgering Dan for years to reevaluate Kiss Me Deadly, Robert Aldrich's now-canonical 1955 noir. Mike always loved it; Dan always thought it was overrated. Does he still think so after a fresh viewing? Join them for a conversation about how the history of a film's reception may only be partly due to the film's quality, the ways in which Kiss Me Deadly works like a dream, and the degree to which the Mike Hammer Universe differs from the MCU. When James Traylor and Max Collins found out that they were both writing a book about author Mickey Spillane, they decided to collaborate rather than compete. For the first time ever, Traylor and Collins have completed the first biography on Spillane. The description reads, “Beginning in 1947 with I, the Jury, and continuing with his next six novels, Spillane quickly amassed a readership in the tens of millions, becoming the bestselling novelist in the history of American publishing. Surrounded by controversy for the overt violence and suggestive sexual content of his iconic Mike Hammer private eye novels, Spillane was loathed by critics but beloved by his readers.” In this interview, the writers talk about the ups and downs of Mickey's life, how the Mike Hammer character led to Jack Reacher and countless other other characters like James Bond, some mysterious parts of Mickey's life, the paperback revolution, and this forty year overnight success of writing this book. MIKE HAMMER - 1953 episode of That Hammer Guy with Ted de Corsia in title role. (Internet text: Camel Cigarettes shared the sponsorship of the initial run of That Hammer Guy. An east coast production out of Mutual's WOR, by Episode No. 43 Larry Haines departed the series when Mutual decided to take the production to the west coast and Don Lee-Mutual's new $3M KHJ/Mutual facilities. George Petrie subbed as Mike Hammer for several epsidoes until veteran tough-guy Ted DeCorsia assumed the role for the remainder of the run. Adapted for Radio by, among others, Edward Adamson, the scripts were the equal of radio noir fare of the era, while liberally punctuated with Mickey Spillane's unique brand of aphorisms, underworld slang, Brooklynese and misogynistic references to the fairer sex. Richard Lewis directed the entire run, keeping the series well-paced, crisp and compelling. With the series split almost equally between Larry Haines and Ted DeCorsia, there's an obvious temptation to compare their respective characterizations. - BoxCar
In 1961, Mike Wallace sat down with both Ayn Rand and Mickey Spillane for an interview. For decades, this interview has been unavailable to the general public. Now we are releasing it for the first time. In this YouTube livestream event, join Elan Journo and Tom Bowden as they go “Behind the Scenes” of this historic interview and discuss how Rand and Spillane found themselves on the same stage. This interview offers a unique view of Rand—we see Ayn Rand, the friend, coming to the defense of the critically attacked Spillane and giving him credit as a “moral crusader.” Through his character Mike Hammer, Rand explains, Spillane presents us with a man who refuses to compromise his integrity. Join us for this remarkable interview and discover Rand's answer to “What Makes a Hero?”—an answer she says will “astonish you.”
Mike Wallace interviews Ayn Rand and Mickey Spillane on their reasons for becoming authors, their view of what makes a hero, and why, despite being viciously denounced by critics, they both maintain a large popular appeal. Hear Ayn Rand's straight-to-the-point analysis of her own and Mickey Spillane's work in this 1961 interview. Audio licensed courtesy of The Bentley Historical Library, University of Michigan.
Ring of Fear is a 1954 film noir from directed by James Edward Grant. It stars hardboiled author Mickey Spillane and lion tamer Clyde Beatty as themselves, along with Pat O'Brien, Sean McClory, Marian Carr, and John Bromfield. After a revenge-seeking madman begins sabotaging Clyde Beatty's circus, famous author Mickey Spillane must come in and bungle around for about an hour or so. It's basically the strange child of circus B-roll and enough leaden crime thriller dialogue to keep Mike Hammer's Colt .45 full of bullets. Áine and Kevin make like sabotaged acrobats and plummet into subjects like "panem et circenses," animal cruelty, and Mike Hammer stories.Follow us on the usual social media suspects:FacebookTwitterInstagramAnd forward your Clyde Beatty Circus tickets to mysterytomepodcast@gmail.com.Mystery to Me is a production of Mystery Sheet LLC.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Mickey Spillane is one of the best-selling writers of all time, with estimated sales of 225 million copies. Mike Hammer, his most enduring hero, is a private detective who pursues justice with physical and moral courage. Mike uses his gun, his fists, and his mind to avenge the innocent, to destroy the evil, and to guard the good. Many reviewers dismissed or condemned Spillane's writing; many readers, undeterred, have devoured the books anyway. Ayn Rand admired the Mike Hammer books and praised them publicly. This talk surveys the range of Spillane's writing career (including his ideas for films starring his friend John Wayne), with emphasis on the voice and virtues of his crusading hero.Recorded live on July 3, 2022 as part of the Objectivist Summer Conference.
In 1967, Ayn Rand made three controversial appearances in the space of four months on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, including one that hasn't been heard publicly since its broadcast. In this YouTube livestream event, join Elan Journo and Tom Bowden as they discuss the cultural context of the 1960s, Rand's ground rules for appearing on Carson's show, the topics covered in the interviews, Carson's conversational skills and intellectual courage, and the strong audience response. Stay tuned for podcasts featuring all three interviews, in which Rand addresses an astonishing range of issues, from basic principles of philosophy to reasoned opinions on current events and cultural trends to lighthearted banter. Rand stoked controversy and pulled no punches. She declared her reasoned opposition to the Vietnam War, the military draft, and to a papal encyclical attacking the moral foundations of Western civilization — while expressing support for rational self-interest, the pursuit of individual happiness, political freedom, Romantic art, and the novels of Mickey Spillane. Although Rand would in later years give long-form interviews to Phil Donahue, Tom Snyder and others, these three Johnny Carson interviews remain unsurpassed for sheer breadth. Join us for a trip back to a time when talk-show discussions of highly contentious issues could be calm, focused, intelligent and rational.

We have an amazing story for you today on the podcast, certainly one of the most fascinating stories we've ever heard. This author lived a pretty extraordinary life. He was hired by legendary Hollywood director Alfred Hitchcock to write a screenplay for what would become one of Hitchcock's greatest movies. It was one of several screenplays written by our featured author. Actors who starred in projects he wrote and developed for the big screen and Television include Richard Chamberlain, F. Murray Abraham, Ben Johnson, Jerry Orbach, Robby Benson, Raquel Welch, Burt Reynolds, Yul Brynner, Tom Skerritt , Kirk Douglas, Kim Novak, Barbara Rush, Walter Matthau, Rod Taylor, Tippi Hedren, Jessica Tandy, and Suzanne Pleshette. Wow! If You're a movie buff you may have already guessed that the Hitchcock classic he wrote the screenplay for was, The Birds. Before Hitchcock and Hollywood our author served on a destroyer in the Pacific in the Navy during World War II. We're just getting started. He wrote more than 139 novels over 53 years! That's an average of a little more than 2 and a half novels a year for more than half a century. He was born in East Harlem New York in 1926. Born Salvatore Albert Lombino, he legally changed his name to Evan Hunter in 1952, but before he did, he sold a short science fiction story to If, Worlds of Science Fiction Magazine. In the magazine, which had made its debut two months earlier in March 1952, he is credited with writing “Welcome, Martians!” As S.A. Lombino which as fas I can tell was one of only a handful of times he used his real name. So why the name change? Well, as the story goes an editor once told him his Italian heritage might stop him from achieving great success, so SA Lombino became Evan Hunter. Oh, and if you think you recognize the name Evan Hunter, you're probably right. Lombino took a number of jobs in the early 1950's to pay the bills while attempting to get his writing career off the ground. One of them led to a novel, which became a movie, starring Glenn Ford, Sidney Pointier, Vic Morrow and Anne Francis. He spent 17 days as a teacher at the Bronx Vocational High School in September 1950. That experience led to his 6th novel titled The Blackboard Jungle which became the movie of the same name starring the previously mentioned star studded cast. Lombino, or Hunter had several pen names John Abbott, Curt Cannon, Hunt Collins, Ezra Hannon, Richard Marsten and then there's the name he used most often, Ed McBain! As McBain he wrote the “87th Precinct” crime series. Once again his novels made their way to Television. In 1961 and 62 NBC aired a police drama called “87th Precinct”. He started writing for television in 1956 with a teleplay for "The Kaiser Aluminum Hour" which aired on NBC in 1956 and 57 and he wrote the story for two episodes of "Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer" a syndicated TV show, two years later in 1958 and 59. He didn't write a lot of science fiction but what he did write is good. I chose this story because it's unusual. A story written by a writer, about a writer getting a little help from a bizarre source. Writing stories was hard work—unless Fred had a typewriter like "Reggie" that could write by itself! Nonsense?
