You have two levels to pull in marketing: 1) everything that falls under brand, content marketing, messaging, and advertising, and 2) your product or service and its features and cost relative to comparable products in the marketplace - is it a good value? If you only have one of these two prongs firing, it better fire hard. Example from Bank of America's latest credit card offering and why it will never compete with Apple Card despite both being comparable free cards (no annual fee) with cash back rewards. Watch my 4-minute video analyzing Apple's luxury brand: Why Apple Could Survive 50 Years: $AAPL Outlast FAANG. Mentioned in this episode: startup bank Mercury (here's why I like Mercury Bank). It's the season finale of Card Wars as Paul and Caleb are back from a wild weekend at The National in Chicago. The guys run down the entire weekend from selling, to strategy and how they had to adapt on the fly. Paul discusses lessons learned on LeBron cards and how fans were looking for high end stuff especially for star players. Plus, Caleb and Paul talk about the last-minute twist of each adding one card each to their competition that really paid off- as Paul won a Ja Morant Kaboom card in a poker game and Paul flips a Clayton Kershaw he bought for $5 ten years ago. Paul is recognized by a huge Marlins fan and the guys talk about dealing with everyone from big spenders to kids with cash. Plus, celebrity sightings from Steve Aoki buying high end Ohtani cards, former Yankees' pitcher Phil Hughes was buying and selling, plus, a new grading company from Jay-Z. Finally, it's the moment of truth as Cousin Sal joins the show and the first ever winner of Card Wars is announced and the final totals are revealed. Paul and Caleb began with $10k each of Cousin Sal's money- were they able to turn a profit?
Card Wars has been three months in the making but The National Card Convention in Chicago is finally here! Paul and Caleb have purchased cards from Kentucky to Hong Kong with the $10,000 each they received from Cousin Sal and now it's time to try and make a profit. The guys discuss the importance of having the cards being graded and the future of grading cards. Caleb thinks Paul has really improved from the beginning as they also have seen the card market balloon and then come back to earth over the last month. Caleb and Paul both made big Jacob deGrom purchases as they discuss how torn they are over selling it versus keeping it as an investment for Sal. Plus, the guys discuss which players worked out as investments such as Trae Young and which players didn't work out such as Jaylen Brown. Caleb offers a $100 challenge for everyone at The Nationals and puts out the word that they are looking to sell everything and win Card Wards so look for them at Nationals.

This week, Dan and Dudley have returned from their beach vacation having played a long list of games. They broke The Mind, they played Cosmic Encounters for 5 hours, they learned how to play Home Alone, Card Wars, and Horrified. They also came back to a bunch of exciting E3 news, including Advance Wars re-boot and Metroid Dread.
Caleb and Paul are gearing up for The Nationals as the competition between them is heating up. The guys react to Logan Paul entering the ring with a Pokemon Charizard PSA Grade 10 card as they discuss interest in the market is still at an all-time high. Caleb and Paul discuss the best cards they've ever pulled out of a pack and Paul wins a card on a bet. They discuss the NBA playoffs and the red-hot Phoenix Suns as Chris Paul and Deandre Ayton cards prices continue to rise. Plus, it's their pick-ups of the week as Caleb scores a Justin Herbert Prizm Black Silver and Paul finds a rare Zion Williamson sticker/refractor from Europe.
In a brand new episode of Card Wars with Paul Lo Duca and Caleb Keller, the guys discuss: cards of NBA players gaining value from their performance in the playoffs such as Luka Doncic and Trae Young, a new grading company the duo has been using called HGA, which young NFL stars we should all be investing in, which current head coach could emerge as a very valuable card due to his profile and as always their best pick up of the week!

As the Card Wars continues, Caleb thinks he has his best week yet but Paul wonders if he is being overconfident. Caleb saw a $10k trade go down at a card show and they discuss who got the better deal. Caleb's pick up of the week was a Cracked Ice, Devin Booker card he got for only $72 and as the playoffs begin the guys discuss good investments for down the line including the Knicks' Immanuel Quickley. Plus, Paul works out a deal for a Lebron Lot that includes a bunch of his cards. Caleb discusses more of his recent finds including a '92 Topps Shaq rookie in great condition and a Marco Luciano rookie for only $2- a huge steal. The guys discuss the UFC card market and getting high grade cards from different grading companies. Caleb tells a story about a collector altering a very expensive Steph Curry card and extracting a jersey patch from it to replace with a better patch. Plus, why signed cards devalue it instead of increasing the value?
With The National Sports Card Show approaching Paul and Caleb are preparing to get their collections together to win the competition. In addition to continuing to invest heavy in Jimmy Butler hoping for another playoff run, Paul finally lands a Luka Doncic Pirzim rookie card. Caleb's pick up of the week is a Crown Royal die-cut LaMelo Ball, one of the best- looking cards he's ever seen. Paul takes issue with PSA holding cards since injuries or performance could drastically change a card's value while they have cards for long periods of time and thinks PSA doesn't want to give 10 grades to avoid flooding the market. Caleb just wants there to be some consistency. Paul couldn't get a Phil Mickelson signed golf ball authenticated, despite knowing him personally. Caleb and Paul discuss the cards that still remain on their wish list, for Paul a high- grade Rickey Henderson rookie is one to get. Finally, the guys discuss how the NFL quarterback market is what to invest in next.
Caleb and Paul are excited about the NBA Playoffs approaching as the card industry has been a buyer's market but is about to become a seller's market. Injuries have hurt some of the bigger stars and now you can add Jaylen Brown to that list as Paul had cards invested in him. The guys discuss the top rookies from the last two draft classes and how Zion has the hunger to win. Plus, why they think Paul George's cards have room for improvement. Then Paul and Caleb discuss their eBay searches this week, as Paul has been all over Jimmy Butler cards and nearly buys a $1,000 card while Caleb nearly buys a $400 soccer card of James Rodriguez. The guys go on to talk about how the uncertainty of grading may affect The National Convention as slabbed cards will be at a premium and their pickups of the week. Caleb and Paul discuss sticking to big name players on a lower end card versus a top brand card and a lower player. Finally, over the next five years which player's card would you want to invest in as Paul makes the case for LaMelo Ball.
Paul Lo Duca and Caleb Keller are back for another edition of Card Wars! Paul and Caleb start off the show by dissecting this first round rookie quarterback class and let us know who could have some big card value soon. Next, the guys discuss a new grading company called the "Hybrid Grading Approach" that may be a game-changer due to the delay on card grading lately. They wrap up the show by talking about their new pickups of the week and Paul teases Caleb about Luis Robert's long term injury which will hurt the value of his cards.
Paul and Caleb begin the show by giving an update on the 41st National Sports Collectors Convention in Chicago. Paul finds a 88-89 Fleer basketball set for only $300 that may have potentially yielded a solid grade Michael Jordan. The Card Wars spending standings stands at Paul $5,480 and Caleb has only spent $2,309 however he has his eyes on some $500-$1,000 whales. The guys talk about the upcoming NBA playoffs and how the more playoff teams the better for the card industry as players from even lower seeded teams could get a bump in value. The Knicks could be poised to see a rise in prices including RJ Barrett and Julius Randle. Plus, Caleb explains why Steph Curry is deserving of the MVP trophy. The guys give their top pick-ups of the week and it's a battle between two Ronald Acuna Jr. cards they each paid $150 for. Plus, Paul talks about how he saw baseball becoming the global game it is today by playing in overseas tournaments. Finally, the guys give their thoughts on Saturday's Kentucky Derby- as they both think Essential Quality will be tough to beat and give their horses to keep an eye on.
Paul downloaded the eBay app and it has been a game changer as now he's constantly monitoring auctions and buying cards 24/7. While Caleb hasn't opened a single pack yet in this competition, Paul bought a sealed wax box of 1993 Upper Deck baseball (Derek Jeter's rookie year) for $175, but isn't sure if he'll be able to keep it without opening it. Paul also loaded up on Larry Walker Leaf rookies, with his Hall of Fame induction he is finally getting his due and a 2004 Skybox Lebron James USA card that Beckett graded out at 9.5 Caleb and Paul discuss how Friday night is the best time to end an eBay listing for sellers because it's pay day and buyers should be looking for listings that have bad ending times. Caleb says there aren't many steals on eBay and the market is constantly hitting their comps. Caleb gets a '93 Topps Gold Derek Jeter Rookie card for $119, the guys discuss how Derek Jeter rookies will continue to surge and have room to grow. Caleb opened up a sealed 89 Upper Deck set and talked about how important the Ken Griffey Jr. rookie card centering us. Caleb and Paul have changed their strategy now going with established stars over prospects, especially with the Baseball Hall of Fame ceremony coming, the upcoming Magic Johnson documentary and Michael Jordan inducting Kobe into the Basketball Hall of Fame. Paul and Caleb discuss why NBA big men don't sell as high as other players, disagree over Kevin Durant as Paul doesn't think he can stay healthy and when to buy back in on Steph Curry. Paul thinks he is winning Card Wars but Caleb has more money left. Finally, Caleb finds a signed Paul Lo Duca “Passing the Torch” card and the reason he is on it with Duke Snider.
Paul and Caleb recap the Knights of Columbus Card Show as making a deal with a kid brought back memories for Paul. The Card Wars scoreboard: Caleb has spent $1,482 of Cousin Sal's money and Paul has spent $2,600; Paul has had the biggest score of the competition so far pulling a Prizm Basketball Orange Ice Lebron James card that was going for $1k before his injury. Caleb bought a Bo Bichette card as well as a Donovan Mitchell card while there. The guys also talk about card show etiquette and how sellers need to know their price or put a price sticker on it. Paul's strategy of buying packs/boxes has shown more risk but now he may pivot into buying individual cards as we get closer to the National Card Show Convention; Derek Jeter going into the Hall of Fame – he'll be another strong buy that weekend. The guys discuss the news of Topps going public and keeping up with supply while there is huge demand. Then they talk about the NFL, is Julian Edelman's stock going to rise because of his retirement and could he be in the Hall of Fame? Plus, the guys discuss Josh Allen as an investment before getting back to basketball and Zion Williamson. Finally, Paul is already looking to get a return on Cousin Sal's investment and possibly selling the Oscar Robertson autograph card he pulled.
Paul and Caleb recap their Instagram live from the Kentucky Road Show card store; as Jimmy the owner took them into his vault to show off his incredible collection including an incredibly rare '84 Star Jordan. Jimmy opened up a $1,900 box of Topps Definitive and had some monster pulls, plus Cousin Sal, Caleb and Paul bought packs for fans that answered trivia questions correctly and one fan landed a 2020 Bowman Spencer Torkelson rookie card. Now that Card Wars has begun, the guys have started to spend Cousin Sal's money with Caleb spending $682 and Paul is at $930. Caleb typically doesn't invest in players on bad teams but picked up a Jorge Soler card with the thought the KC Royals star may be traded at the deadline. Paul, on the other hand is high on Mets' infielder Jeff McNeil and bought some of his cards, plus pulled an Oscar Robertson and Joel Embiid autographed card which he thinks could go up with a deep playoff run. Then the guys discuss the start of baseball season as Caleb is very high on Luis Robert as well as Braves pitcher Ian Anderson. Paul says Freddie Freeman reminds him of Jim Thome and that Gold Glove winners deserve more respect. Caleb talks about his strategy of buying lots of cards as well as ebay etiquette when it comes to making an offer. Plus the guys tease taking Card Wars to their first card show and spending more of Cousin Sal's money as the competition continues!
Cousin Sal and the Degenerate Trifecta are back to discuss a wild few days in the NCAA tournament (02:00). Harry has been hot betting on college basketball; unfortunately, he hasn't on all the other sports (07:45).Jen Piacenti joins the show to discuss this season's baseball futures bets including wins totals, divisions winners, to make playoffs, individual players to win statistical categories and World Series predictions- including the possibility of another Subway Series in October (18:15).Then Paul Lo Duca and Caleb Keller join to discuss their new podcast Card Wars; Cousin Sal will be giving them $10,000 each to collect and try to turn a profit in sports cards over the next 12 weeks (01:08:45).
Paul Lo Duca (@paulloduca16) and Caleb Keller (@jersey_mojo) set up Card Wars; Cousin Sal will be giving them $10,000 each to buy, sell and trade sports cards/memorabilia over the next 13 weeks to try and turn a profit. Paul explains how he originally got into collecting, how his family opened a sports card store and how his mom had the foresight to buy 12 boxes of 1986-87 Fleer basketball when everyone else was buying baseball. Caleb and Paul discuss the booming card market and it's up and downs over the past twenty years; how PSA grading changed the game, how the current rookie classes are pushing the market and how Yao Ming and Dirk Nowitzki helped the global market. Caleb is a card savant and thinks Paul will be the underdog in this competition, but Paul says he will be using all his baseball contacts – and already has his eye on Mets prospect Jeff McNeil. Caleb talks about his dream card, the Michael Jordan 86-87 Fleer rookie card and the rise of it since the early 90's. The guys talk about “eye appeal” and Paul hates when guys are lazy about signing autographs. The guys discuss their strategy over the next few months and Paul shares some of his most valuable things including a rare Bumble Bee Tuna, Dwayne Johnson, University of Miami football card that has exploded in value in the past year and the game card from Tom Glavine's 300th win and which former teammate bought Paul's pool table??
Forty years ago, Fleer and Donruss entered the sports cards market, breaking up the Topps monopoly and changing the industry forever. John Odell from the Baseball Hall of Fame joins Sweeny to discuss how the events of 1981 helped lead the hobby to where it is today. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
