At Maggie Walker HS in Richmond, VA, Bob Dandridge followed in the footsteps of Arthur Ashe and Willie Lanier. Amazingly, all 3 would end up in their respective sports' Halls of Fame. In the NBA he paired w/ Kareem Abdul Jabbar (then Lew Alcindor) and Oscar Robertson to win an improbable title for the third year Bucks, and then he returned to the East Coast to win a title with Washington, completing a daunting front line of himself, Elvin Hayes, and Wes Unseld. The month of June is what I call the "Month of Champions".We have the College baseball and softball tournaments happening this month but also the NBA Finals and the Stanley Cup finals talking place simultaneously. This year the Boston Celtics and the Edmonton Oilers both played for their league championship in the month where summer begins Alot like 1984 when both teams reached the NBA Finals and Stanley Cup respectively. In this edition of the Historically Speaking Sports, host Dana Auguster will revisit the summer of 1984. That year the Boston Celtics, led by Larry Bird took on the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA finals and for the first time Bird and Magic would duel for the Larry o'Brien Trophy. meanwhile the Edmonton Oilers, led by the Great One Wayne Gretzky was in the Stanley Cup Finals facing the New York Islanders who were looking to maintain their stranglehold on the Cup. That year the Celtics defeated the Lakers for the eighth time in the NBA Finals while the Oilers beat the Islanders to begin their own dynasty, winning the Cup five times in the next seven years. Later in the episoide, we will send a shout out to the 1974 NBA Finals. The Boston Celtics, in thier first NBA Finals since the retirement of Bill Russell, faced off against the Milwaukee Bucks, led by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Oscar Robertson. That series is remembered for its intensity and an all time great NBA finals game where an iconic player connected on a iconic shot for a game-winner for just force a game seven. That and more on this edition of the Historically Speaking Sports. Ray and Nick speak with Law Murray of the Athletic about Jerry West, as well as fellow NBA legend and greatest player in Royals/Kings franchise history Oscar Robertson. They discuss the remarkable basketball player, NBA executive, and person who was Jerry West, including Law's personal interactions with Jerry as a beat writer covering the Clippers in Jerry's later years. They also discuss Oscar Robertson, his Hall of Fame career, his Royals teammate Mo Stokes, and the friendship between Robertson and West.
With the NBA Finals in full swing, and on the day of Jerry West's passing, we talk the ten most influential players in NBA history. Not necessarily the best of all time, but the most influential -- the ones who had the greatest impact on and off the basketball court. Len picks Shaquille O'Neal, and Beave faints from the surprise. Some changes are for the better, while others, not necessarily, but Beave and Len each go through their own Top Ten. Who are yours? Tune in for a lively discussion!

Jack McCallum is on the case of the Crispus Attucks Tigers, a young Oscar Robertson, and purloined glory in the heartland of hoops. In The Real Hoosiers, his 12th book, McCallum dives into why Indiana celebrates the 1954 Milan Miracle, and the film “Hoosiers,” more than Attucks. Repping a school community forced into existence in a “bewildering and openly racist big-city educational system,” future NBA assist king and players' union leader Robertson and his teammates won back-to-back Indiana schoolboy titles barely a decade after the competition was opened to Black schools. It was the first time anywhere in America that a Black team had won ‘State,' and that gets into some “freighted” history. Best known as a longtime NBA writer at Sports Illustrated, McCallum's basketball books include Dream Team, Golden Days, and Seven Seconds Or Less. He also detailed a personal health challenge in The Prostate Monologues.
On the untold story of Indiana high school basketball and the team you need to know about; on the brilliance of a young Oscar Robertson; on whether we can still dig, "Hoosiers"; on nearly coming to blows with a Hall of Fame point guard.
2-29-2024 Passed Ball Show. John talks about the standoff between MLB Owners and Scott Boras, the four remaining high profile Boras represented free agents, and whether this situation is more on the MLB Owners or on Boras and his corporation. If you listened to John's show before, you know who he is calling to task. John then opines on why it is good for the NBA to have star led teams like the Los Angeles Lakers and Golden State Warriors in its playoffs and also why it might be difficult for both to make the playoffs (past play-in tournament). During today's brief #savingsportshistory segment, John talks about Leap Day, the Cincinnati Royals, Oscar Robertson, Jerry Lucas, Gordie Howe, Ray Bourque, Al Rosen, Henry Richard, and Jerry Groom- then tells you who Dickey Pierce and Lena Blackburne are and why they have an impact on sports history.
In this episode, our panelists dive into a range of hot topics, starting with their thoughts on the rising stars they're most excited to watch. They also analyze the Milwaukee Bucks' recent loss to the Memphis Grizzlies G-League team, questioning whether the Bucks are truly contenders or just "fool's gold." The panel debates whether the Celtics should consider moving Jaylen Brown if they don't win this year and explores the concept that superstars shouldn't bear all the credit or blame for team outcomes. Additionally, they delve into George Karl's comments about Carmelo Anthony being overrated and ponder how many modern champions the '86 Celtics and '87 Lakers could defeat. They also imagine a hypothetical scenario with the 1970s big three of Oscar Robertson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Julius Erving, discussing how dominant they would be in today's NBA. The episode includes a preview of the NBA Rising Star Game, predictions for a Players Choice 1v1 basketball tournament, insights into rising talents Caitlin Clark and JuJu Watkins, and a ranking of every young star in the NBA. Welcome to The Panel, the NBA debate show that brings the heat, sparks passionate discussions, and dives headfirst into the world of basketball like never before! All month long, WISH-TV is highlighting people and places where you can celebrate Black History Month.Created back in 1998 by Gilbert Taylor and housed inside Crispus Attucks High School, Indianapolis' first segregated black high school, the Crispus Attucks Museum took eight years to put together. At the time, it was more of a collection and it fit in a room not much larger than a closet.Today, it's known by many as the premier history museum in the Midwest. From the achievements of basketball legends like Oscar Robertson to jazz greats like Wes Montgomery, you'll find a number of exhibits. The most recent new edition is The Anti-lynching Exhibits of 1935. The exhibit, a partnership with IU Bloomington and the city of Indianapolis, shows how much America has overcome and the varying layers of resilience it's taken to get here.If you would like to check out the museum, it is located at 1140 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. St. You can make an appointment between 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday or 10 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
For people outside of Indianapolis, the focus of NBA All-Star Weekend next month will be an offense-only exhibition game between the league's biggest stars. But the expansive festivities surrounding the game in Indianapolis will essentially be a celebration of Black excellence. The league has come to embrace the way its players have pushed the sport into the realms of Black culture, including music, fashion, cuisine, acting and art. A cavalcade of Black celebrities will be on hand as Indianapolis becomes a cultural magnet. One of the many events timed to coincide with all-star festivities is the debut run of a play about the 1955 Crispus Attucks High School basketball team, led by Oscar Robertson, that became the nation's first all-Black squad to win an open state tournament. Titled “A Touch of Glory,” the play will be performed at the high school, just north of downtown's core. For the podcast this week, IBJ arts and entertainment writer Dave Lindquist hosts a conversation with playwright Laura Town and director Deborah Asante. They discuss the production and the achievements of Robertson and his teammates, who excelled despite having no home court—and some being displaced from their actual homes. Here's their conversation. The IBJ Podcast is brought to you by Taft.

In this episode of Dime Machine Flashbacks, Dime Dropper continues on the Dime Machine as he finishes the 1970-71 season and talks about that season's champion, the Milwaukee Bucks. He breaks down how the Bucks went from expansion team in 1968 to NBA Champions just 3 years later. He talks about the impact of Oscar Robertson & Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (then Lew Alcindor). Through studying the season, Dime found some big similarities with a team of the recent past, the 2014-15 NBA Champion Golden State Warriors. Stephen Curry and his squad get regularly discredited due to what people consider an "easier" route to the title and the injuries sustained to Kevin Love and Kyrie Irving in the Finals, leaving LeBron James with nobody. In this episode, he explains why they shouldn't be discredited at all. He also claims that Kareem had the best first 2 seasons of any player in NBA History. Theresa Runstedtler, a history professor at American University, talks about her latest book, Black Ball. It's the story of basketball in the ‘70s, when it was transformed by Black players, such as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Oscar Robertson. Kermit Washington. Every step of the way, the NBA owners fought against allowing players to have more power, freedom and money. Nothing came easy. The Lakers are faced with a genuine Catch-22. They may not be able to make the playoffs without pushing Anthony Davis and LeBron James past safe limits of physical output, but if the org pushes them past those limits either or both are likely to get hurt, in which case they'll miss the playoffs. This was the issue facing the Lakers Monday in Brooklyn, where both James and Davis sat the front end of a back-to-back following Saturday's epic OT loss to Boston. The hope was that maintenance was the driving force behind keeping both in street clothes, and in the case of Davis it probably was. But Monday we learned that LeBron is battling a foot problem that put a fresh spin on his absence. And Lakers coach Darvin Ham wouldn't say if James will play tonight against the Knicks at the Garden. He said they didn't want to get ahead of themselves. That's not going to make Lakers fans feel better! Because if there's no real injury problem here, the answer to "Is LeBron James going to suit up to play at Madison Square Garden?" is YES!!! (Gulp...)Fans are asking, at this point, can the Lakers even afford to take these scheduled losses? The answer is complicated in some ways, and definitely gets into all the things that plague the Lakers roster right now. They've been surprisingly competitive, they play really hard, they don't give up on games. It's actually a likable bunch, especially if you happen to be a Russell Westbrook fan (because then you're not upset by his presence). But these Lakers also require Davis and James to be 1st Team All-NBA caliber, or their hopes are essentially sunk. And as much as anything, fans seem like they're getting tired. Exhausted with a team and a season that seems to pull the football away whenever it seems ready to be kicked. With a coach whose decisions can be confusing and a front office that doesn't inspire confidence. So what's next? And meanwhile, how into the idea of celebrating Russell Westbrook's career achievements are fans? Not all that much, we learned, on a night where Westbrook moved into the top 10 all time in assists. Meanwhile, he's pushing the top 30 for points, too. That's a combo only Oscar Robertson and LeBron have achieved.HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: LeBron has a foot problem. What do the Lakers do with that information?SEGMENT 2: Frustration is building among fans for a season where there seems to be a hard wall keeping the Lakers from climbing out of their hole.SEGMENT 3: Let's talk about Russ and winning.
