Send us a textHaving worked with HOFer Roland Hemond with the Chicago #whitesox, Dan Evans took on the job of rebuilding the #dodgers in 2001. He was there for four seasons and had a winning season each year before being fired with almost 200 others. The Dodgers went 71-91 the next season and Dan tells us it did not bother him a bit! Dodgers GM from 2001-2004 having a winning record each year, Dan Evans is a baseball lifer with a lot of life left ahead!  We could have talked with Dan for hours and hours! Not being the GM that traded Beltre was very interesting to hear since Dan knew he was watching one of the greats, but others in the Dodger organization did not see it or agree. Dan also was the GM who brought back HOFers Duke Snider, Sandy Koufax, and #dodgers star Maury Wills into the Dodger family. Dan also talked about conversations he had with the teammates of Jackie Robinson and how special it was to know Jackie's widow Rachel. A historian of the game, Dan sees the future at the same time making him one of the most interesting interviews we've ever done on the podcast. We will have him back hopefully very soon as we've much left to discuss! Dan's course for those thinking about being involved for baseball can be found here: https://www.sportsmanagementworldwide.com/users/dan-evansAnd our apologies for the audio difficulties in the podcast. Intro & Outro music this season courtesy of Mercury Maid! February 27, 2011 — The “Duke of Flatbush”, Hall of Famer Duke Snider dies in Escondido, CA at age 84. Snider was a power-hitting centerfielder for the great Brooklyn Dodgers teams of the 1950s and is immortalized in Terry Cashman's song “Willie, Mickey and the Duke”. Snider was Brooklyn's entry into one of the most passionate debates in baseball history. New York sportswriter Red Smith once wrote, “(Duke) Snider, (Mickey) Mantle, and (Willie) Mays. You could get a fat lip in any saloon by starting an argument as to which was the best.” Sharing the big city spotlight with fellow future Hall of Fame centerfielders Willie Mays and Mickey Mantle, Snider was part of a magical period in New York baseball that saw a team from the nation's largest city win the World Series in nine out of the 10 seasons between 1949 and 1958. The Dodgers appeared in the Fall Classic five times during that time, winning their only championship in Brooklyn in 1955. Although the Dodger lineup also featured other outstanding performers such as Jackie Robinson, Roy Campanella, and Gil Hodges throughout much of the period, no one on the team wielded a more potent bat than Snider. And, even though the Brooklyn centerfielder usually came out third best in comparisons to Mays and Mantle, Snider hit more home runs during the 1950s (326) than any other player in baseball.Hall of Famer Ralph Kiner once noted, “I'd say Duke covers more ground, wastes less motion, and is more consistent than anyone since DiMaggio.” And Stan Musial named Snider, Willie Mays, and Hank Aaron as his all-time National League outfield. What could have been – after the failed playoff series in 1951 Snider later recalled, “I went to Walter O'Malley and told him I couldn't take the pressure. I told him I'd just as soon be traded. I told him I figured I could do the Dodgers no good.”

John spends a little bit of time talking about the decision made by Michigan State to fire Head Coach Mel Tucker and the fact that the school cares a lot more about not having to pay the $70 million owed to him than the victim and the reason they have "cause" to let him go. Duke Snider was, arguably, the first poster-boy for the Dodgers following their move to Los Angeles, but his legendary status (and seven consecutive All-Star appearances) was earned while the team was based in Brooklyn. During his career, this Center Fielder was named to the National League All-Star team eight times, appeared in six World Series, won the Fall Classic in both 1955 and 1959, and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1980. What put him there? How about a high-water mark of 1031 runs batted in during the 1950s? Hitting four home runs in two different World Series? Or the record for most home runs off a single pitcher? Those 19 dings put Robin Roberts in the record books as well, albeit for a stat a pitcher would not want. So let's celebrate Snider's time in the show. It's opening day of the 1957 season, the last year the Dodgers would be in Brooklyn, and Snider owns center field. Can the Dodgers start a landmark season with a win?  And how will the Phillies pitcher Robin Roberts' pitch count go? Roy Campanella and his team take you through the game. Snider belted 407 homers and batted .295 in an 18-year career, spent mostly with the Dodgers. Some attributed his batting improvement after 1920 to a “lively ball”, but the more plausible reasons were the tutelage of teammate Ty Cobb, and maturity. Heilmann played fifteen seasons with Detroit as part of one of the best hitting teams in history, and later served as a popular announcer for the franchise.

Yankee fans loved Mickey Mantle, and Giant fans had Willie Mays, but Dodger fans wouldn't have traded Duke Snider for either of those star center fielders. Snider was a five-tool player, finishing in the top three in stolen bases twice, leading the NL in homers, RBI, total bases (three times), runs (three times), hits, walks, slugging, and OBP. He led the Dodgers to six pennants in his first 11 seasons as a regular player, supplying power from the left side of the plate. Of all the great center fielders, Snider may be the most unappreciated. He slugged the final homer in Ebbets Field and followed the Dodgers to LA, where he collected the first hit in Dodger Stadium history.Classic Broadcasts are old-time broadcasts that have been put together from various sources. By Jesse SpectorIn addition to grabbing Keelin's words from yesterday's show notes, I'm not going to try to duplicate that format! I'm going to expand a little bit on Jeff McNeil's batting crown and other end-of-season stats.McNeil is the first Met in 11 years to win a batting title, and the first Met ever to lead the majors in average. Miguel Cabrera batted .344 in 2011 to edge the Mets' shortstop who won the club's first batting crown.Pete Alonso tied Aaron Judge for the major league lead with 131 RBI, and his National League-leading total of 16 intentional walks trailed only Judge (19) and José Ramírez (20) in the majors. The only other time a Met won the National League RBI crown was 1991, when Howard Johnson knocked in 117 runs, again trailing a Tiger — Cecil Fielder (133) — for the major league lead. It's the first time a Mets slugger has led the Senior Circuit in intentional walks, and the first time for a New York NL leader since Duke Snider's 26 in 1956… or, if you want to be pedantic about “New York NL” and not “Brooklyn,” Mel Ott's 13 in 1934. Ott trailed Jimmie Foxx, who was intentionally walked 17 times for the Philadelphia A's.It might have been a #markcanhasummer, but it obviously involved Mark Canha getting hit by a lot of pitches. Twenty-eight, to be exact, the most in baseball, as part of a team that set a modern record by getting in the way of 112 pitches. Canha can comiserate with teammate Brandon Nimmo, who got plunked 22 times to also lead the majors four years ago — also with a former Mets prospect leading the American League: Andrés Giménez (25) this year, Carlos Gómez (21) in 2018. Canha's HBP total was the most by any major leaguer since Anthony Rizzo got drilled 30 times for the 2015 Cubs. Nimmo was “only” hit 16 times this year, tied for fourth-most in the NL with Jake Cronenworth and Kyle Farmer. Along with Starling Marte (unlucky 13), Alonso (12), McNeil (11), and Francisco Lindor (10), there were six Mets in double figures for getting hit by pitches. Out of a total of 24 players in the National League. Those six men — Canha, Nimmo, Marte, Alonso, McNeil, and Lindor — now walk together (and rub some dirt on it) into baseball history, as they have joined (per Stathead) only one other such group in baseball history: the 1899 Baltimore Orioles, whose manager had to wince at Steve Brodie getting hit by 23 pitches, Jimmy Sheckard 18, Bill Keister (what an aptonym) 16, Ducky Holmes 15, and Candy LaChance 10 times. That's only five players, because the manager was, like Buck Showalter, a Baltimore Orioles manager who made his way to New York's NL club a few years later: John McGraw, at that time a 26-year-old player/manager — his first season in the role he'd win the 1904 pennant and 1905 World Series in with the Giants.McGraw didn't just get hit by 14 pitches in 1899, he led the league with 124 walks, 140 runs scored, and a .547 on-base percentage. He also stole 73 bases, and did one more thing that Showalter didn't do this year: got ejected five times. It may not last, but for now, Showalter not only has the highest career winning percentage as Mets manager (.623 — Davey Johnson is the multi-season leader at .588 from 1984-90, he was tossed 13 times), but the most games managing the Mets without getting the heave-ho.The man who once succeeded Showalter in the Bronx, Joe Torre, is the Mets' managerial ejection leader with 24 during his 286-420 tenure in Flushing. When and if Showalter does get the business end of an ump's thumb (guess who), the Mets' no-ejection record will revert to Roy McMillan and his 53 games in charge after succeeding Yogi Berra in 1975.McMillan got the Mets in striking distance by Labor Day, when Tom Seaver, on the way to his third Cy Young, pitched a four-hitter (in a tidy hour and 55 minutes) against the Pirates to close the division gap to four games and pick up his 20th victory of the year. But the next night, Pittsburgh blitzed Jerry Koosman for eight runs in 3.2 innings (homers by Bill Robinson, Manny Sanguillen, and Rennie Stennett) and rolled to an 8-4 win. Felix Millan and Mike Vail got the Mets on the board with back-to-back one-out doubles in the first inning of the rubber game, but after a walk to Dave Kingman, Rusty Staub bounced into a 4-6-3 double play. Bud Harrelson made an error on a Willie Stargell grounder to allow the Pirates to tie the game in the fourth, and Robinson's homer off Jon Matlack in the seventh effectively ended the Mets' season. The next series against the Cardinals was a repeat: Seaver winning, Koosman and Matlack losing, and a sweep in Montreal meant that when the Mets got another crack at Pittsburgh, out at Three Rivers, they were nine games back. They wound up 10.5 games out in third place. These Mets? They wound up with 101 wins, same as the team that now gets a bye to the division series. That's where you can get on the train to the playoffs. Hello, Mets Legends faithful! We sincerely apologize for the delay between podcast uploads. Rob's computer and him got into a long, drawn out battle, but Rob came out on top as the ultimate victor. Anyway, this episode is jampacked with tremendous content! Ryan Finkelstein of Locked on Mets joins Rob and Mike J. to talk about what goes into hosting a daily podcast, and Ryan explains why he loved Mets Legend Jeff Duncan so much. We then go back and retrace Rob's lineage all the way to the 1960s when his distant relative, Jimmy Piersall, hit his 100th career home run and ran the bases backwards so he would get more publicity than Duke Snider did for his 400th homer. Be sure to check us out, as always, on Twitter: @MetsLegends, as well as hitting Ryan with a follow: @FinkelsteinRyan as well as @LockedOnMets! Paul downloaded the eBay app and it has been a game changer as now he's constantly monitoring auctions and buying cards 24/7. While Caleb hasn't opened a single pack yet in this competition, Paul bought a sealed wax box of 1993 Upper Deck baseball (Derek Jeter's rookie year) for $175, but isn't sure if he'll be able to keep it without opening it. Paul also loaded up on Larry Walker Leaf rookies, with his Hall of Fame induction he is finally getting his due and a 2004 Skybox Lebron James USA card that Beckett graded out at 9.5   Caleb and Paul discuss how Friday night is the best time to end an eBay listing for sellers because it's pay day and buyers should be looking for listings that have bad ending times. Caleb says there aren't many steals on eBay and the market is constantly hitting their comps.   Caleb gets a '93 Topps Gold Derek Jeter Rookie card for $119, the guys discuss how Derek Jeter rookies will continue to surge and have room to grow. Caleb opened up a sealed 89 Upper Deck set and talked about how important the Ken Griffey Jr. rookie card centering us.   Caleb and Paul have changed their strategy now going with established stars over prospects, especially with the Baseball Hall of Fame ceremony coming, the upcoming Magic Johnson documentary and Michael Jordan inducting Kobe into the Basketball Hall of Fame.   Paul and Caleb discuss why NBA big men don't sell as high as other players, disagree over Kevin Durant as Paul doesn't think he can stay healthy and when to buy back in on Steph Curry.  Paul thinks he is winning Card Wars but Caleb has more money left. Finally, Caleb finds a signed Paul Lo Duca “Passing the Torch” card and the reason he is on it with Duke Snider.

Almost without hesitation, we give our 11-minute tangent about Spotify Wrapped and people's obsessions with it. Oy vey. Now onto today's episode: We scrutinize the thought process behind and reaction to "Music," a vanity project by the musician Sia. This film (based on the trailer) about a young woman with autism on the outset feels rather stereotypical and quite tropey. Sia also pulled a Hollywood and did not cast an actress who has autism, and her retorts on Twitter to autistic actors is appalling. Her response to criticism is so Trumpian that it sours what is potentially one of the last film trailers, in a year with so few films, in an otherwise detestable year. Elliot Page came out as trans/non-binary. We express our deepest happiness and support for him, and condemn crusading attempts by misguided men and women about what is "masculine." Finally, Ryan gives his latest book recommendation: "Stealing Home: Los Angeles, the Dodgers, and the Lives Caught in Between," Eric Nusbaum's account about the various gatekeepers and everyday people left at the mercy of the times, politics and racial economic inequality in mid-20th century LA. Notable individuals like Jackie Robinson, Duke Snider, Norman Chandler, Councilmembers Edward Roybal and Rosalind Wyman, Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, and countless others intersect with the lives of men and women like Abrana Aréchiga and Frank Wilkinson who fought back against an already overflowing city. February 27, 2011 — The “Duke of Flatbush”, Hall of Famer Duke Snider dies in Escondido, CA at age 84. Snider was a power-hitting centerfielder for the great Brooklyn Dodgers teams of the 1950s and is immortalized in Terry Cashman’s song “Willie, Mickey and the Duke”.  Snider was Brooklyn’s entry into one of the most passionate debates in baseball history.  New York sportswriter Red Smith once wrote, “(Duke) Snider, (Mickey) Mantle, and (Willie) Mays.  You could get a fat lip in any saloon by starting an argument as to which was the best.”  Sharing the big city spotlight with fellow future Hall of Fame centerfielders Willie Mays and Mickey Mantle, Snider was part of a magical period in New York baseball that saw a team from the nation’s largest city win the World Series in nine out of the 10 seasons between 1949 and 1958. And, even though the Brooklyn centerfielder usually came out third best in comparisons to Mays and Mantle, Snider hit more home runs during the 1950s (326) than any other player in baseball. Hall of Famer Ralph Kiner once noted, “I’d say Duke covers more ground, wastes less motion, and is more consistent than anyone since DiMaggio.”  And Stan Musial named Snider, Willie Mays, and Hank Aaron as his all-time National League outfield. What could have been – after the failed playoff series in 1951 Snider later recalled, “I went to Walter O’Malley and told him I couldn’t take the pressure.  I told him I’d just as soon be traded.  I told him I figured I could do the Dodgers no good.”

There's only one Howard. Ed Henry: There's only one Howard to you. Like Frank ... A Ockershausen: Everyone else didn't get to meet him. Whenever ever I say, JB who's sat right in that chair. You know JB, you know . . . Ed Henry: I know JB. A Ockershausen: He's our guy. Well, Howard and I . . . I had to pick him up at the airport, and when he got in, this is before cellphones. This must have been in the early 70S. Ed Henry: 1972 72. A Ockershausen: He got a phone call, somebody at the gate gave him this message, he had to make a phone call. He had to call Rachel Robinson, that Jackie had died. Ed Henry: Yeah, October 1972. He was only 53 years old. A Ockershausen: That is incredible, but to be there, to be part of history when he got that message. He had been close to him, he used to ride the train with him. I didn't know that they lived up at Pound Ridge, or some place. Ed Henry: Yeah, it's amazing what, we get into all these different layers of this story but, the old Brooklyn Dodgers of the forties and fifties, they used to take the subway to Ebbets Field. I mean, you think about now, these players who make 150, 250 million Bryce Harper, here in Washington is talking about his next deal being over $400 million, almost half a billion dollars, for a baseball player. Are they worth it? Are they not worth it? It'll be a bar room argument for a long time, but these players didn't make a whole lot of money, even if they were world famous. A Ockershausen: Howard’s point, . . Jackie rode the train. Ed Henry: Yeah. A Ockershausen: Because he rode the train. Going home to Pound Ridge or some place and he met Rachel and the family. Dodgers, Flatbush and Stickball Ed Henry: One of the characters in my book is Jerry Reinsdorf because he's the owner of the Chicago White Sox and the Chicago Bulls, he became famous in Chicago but he grew up in Flatbush. And he played stickball with Duke Snider. You know Willie, Mickey and the Duke? Could you imagine playing stickball now with Jason Werth or Ryan Zimmerman, I mean, I know Ryan but you don't play stickball in the street, a 10 year old kid doesn't play stickball with Duke Snider. But Duke Snider lived in a little apartment in Flatbush and took the subway to Ebbets Field.

Speaking of the holiday, Brooklyn Dodgers outfielder Duke Snider once said he hated Halloween because their rival, the New York Giants, shared the colors of black and orange with October 31. And so, it is fitting that today we have a man on the show so connected to the Baseball Giants franchise. Peter Magowan was not only their President and Managing General Partner from 1993-2008, but has followed the team ever since growing up off of Central Park on 69th Street in Manhattan. We'll discuss his childhood, heading out to Ebbets Field to watch his Giants play their rivals, the heartbreak he felt when they left in 1957, and saving San Francisco from that same fate when he and a group of investors bought the franchise in the early 1990's.
