We interview Tonya Liburd, author of “The Drunken Tree”, episode 403. Tonya Liburd shares a birthday with Ray Bradbury and Simeon Daniel, which may tell you a little something about her; and while she has an enviable collection of vintage dust bunnies to her credit, her passions are music (someday!) and of course, words. One day she hopes, when introducing herself as a writer, she won't feel all weird about it. Her poetry has been nominated for the 2017 & 2018 Rhysling Awards, and longlisted in the 2015 Carter V. Cooper(Vanderbilt)/Exile Short Fiction Competition. Her work is used in Nisi Shawl's workshops and Tananarive due’s UCLA Horror course (the latter of which was crashed by Jordan Peele of Get Out Fame) as examples of code switching. Her fiction has been praised by Publisher’s Weekly and at Barnes & Noble’s SFF blog. She is the recipient of an Ontario Arts Council writer’s grant in 2020. She is also the Senior Editor of Abyss & Apex Magazine. You can find her blogging at https://www.spiderlilly.com or on Twitter at @somesillywowzer. Before there was a Lil Xan, Lil Pump, Lil Uzi Vert or even a Lil Dicky today we are profiling the greatest Lil of them all. In the late 2000s, there was literally nobody bigger than Lil' Wayne. Out of the slew of high-profile rap stars of the decade, including Eminem, Jay-Z and 50 Cent, Weezy F. Baby helped introduce a new wave of upcoming artists who would dominate the next era. In December 2009, We Are Young Money dropped, an album comprised of rappers such as Tyga, Nicki Minaj and Drizzy Drake. While the album saw luke-warm critical reception and only sold half-a-million copies, the masses got a taste of the artists that would soon be taking over their radios and possibly their local supply of sizzurp. With his 2010 effort Rebirth being a critical and financial flop, it seemed like the victory of Dwayne Michael Carter was unravelling. Only a month after the album's release, the New Orleans rapper was sentenced to a year in the Home of New York's Boldest... Riker's Island Prison. Incarcerated on charges of marijuana possession as well as possession of an unregistered firearm. Serving 242 days, he was released on good behaviour. During his incarceration, the release of his I Am Not Human Being album solidified him as the second artist since 2Pac to have a record hit number one on the Billboard charts while they were still in jail and at the time of this recording the world is patiently waiting for the release of The Carter V.

This week's episode is unofficially sponsored by Chicago as a cultural entity, lol. Following last week's rant, which saw Kanye West bring out the best of the Twitter Law degrees, Yeezy actually unveiled his plan for what reforming the music biz should look like. And as Boogie asks questions and Ciz breaks it down, it actually doesn't seem to be that bad of a plan. But can the recording industry really adapt these types of wide-reaching changes? Elsewhere in the Chi, Lupe Fiasco reminded us this week of just how ridiculous stan culture can be when he made a not-necessarily-untrue statement, and people who clearly never listened to Lupe or know how big of a deal he was when he stepped on the scene started talking out of the sides of their necks. Plus we're talking about the re-release or first release of the original Carter V by Lil Wayne, almost 10 years after it was originally supposed to come out; some dope opportunities and programs, including Converse's All Star mentorship program. Also, who is making R&B for Grown Men in 2020? And How the hell has a Yelawolf x Machine Gun Kelly collab never happened before 2020? This episode was recorded at Twelve Studios in Atlanta, GA. Hosted by @Cizzurp215 and @SaintBoogie Produced by @anatome3 And as always, SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL CREATORS --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thechopblockpod/support

In this episode I talk about how when going through my depression music played a significant part in my recovery. Two artists in particular were Jay Z and Lil’ Wayne. Jay Z met me at my future me in 4:44. Did you know 4:44 is also $:$$? His message about investing and building an empire for his legacies inspired me while Lil’ Wayne’s album Carter V met me where I currently was. Lil’ Wayne through his album touched me and made me realize I was not battling alone with his song, “Let it all work out”. Though I never met either artist, through their talents and message, they guided me to want to live another day. We all go through and grow trough shit, let’s do it together. I aspire to motivate and inspire others through telling my story, come join me on my journey. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/linda-acevedo/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/linda-acevedo/support
