In this exciting episode of History Rage, host Paul Bavill is joined by the enthusiastic Laura Bailey, programme director for living history and events at the Chalke History Festival. Together, they kick off the festival with a deep dive into the fascinating world of mediaeval literature, challenging the misconceptions that often overshadow this rich historical source. The Chalke History Festival Unveiled:Laura introduces listeners to the Chalke History Festival, likening it to "Glastonbury for history nerds" where history enthusiasts can enjoy a week of talks, living history performances, and engaging activities that make the past come alive. She shares her journey from volunteer to programme director, highlighting the festival's commitment to making history accessible and engaging for all, and the importance of connecting historical narratives to contemporary issues. Literary Texts as Historical Sources:Laura passionately argues for the recognition of literary texts as legitimate historical sources, particularly those from the mediaeval period. She discusses the often-overlooked value of texts like the "Roman de Fergus," which, despite being dismissed by some as mere fiction, provides invaluable insights into social dynamics, geography, and the cultural landscape of the time.Listeners will learn how these texts can illuminate the complexities of courtly life, the significance of language, and the interplay between fiction and history, ultimately enriching our understanding of the mediaeval world. Challenging Historical Methodology:Throughout the episode, Laura critiques the traditional reliance on documentary sources, advocating for a more nuanced approach that considers the rich tapestry of narratives found in literary works. She emphasises the importance of examining how these texts reflect the thoughts and experiences of their authors and audiences, urging historians to embrace the multiplicity of perspectives that literature offers. Matt, the Editor-at-Large of Londonist, is probably the most London-obsessed person in the world, reaching parts of the capital others can't reach. In the cause of exploring London, he has waded along the buried River Fleet, spent the night in a haunted plague pit, caught a lung infection by climbing Soho's tallest steeple, and walked along the tracks beneath Leicester Square at 2am. Matt has lived in Blackheath, Borough, Greenwich, Weybridge, West Hampstead, Fortune Green and Chalk Farm. Thanks to the capital's obscene property prices, he's since gone into exile in what he optimistically refers to as “The Future London Borough of Elstree and Borehamwood.” Matt is the author of 12 books, including London Night and Day (2015), Everything You Know About London Is Wrong (2016), and the bestselling/award-winning Atlas of Imagined Places (2021).

For this very special episode of Retrosonic Podcast we caught up with all four members of the legendary Canadian Garage Rock band The Gruesomes as they rehearsed for their upcoming debut London show at Weirdsville on July 2nd, hard to believe this will be the first time the band have ever played the U.K. since forming in Montreal back in 1985. In this comprehensive and thoroughly entertaining show, singers and guitarists Bobby Beaton and Gerry Alvarez, bassist John Davis and drummer John Knoll take us on a wild ride from their formation in 1985, their split in 1990 and right up to their resurrection and classic comeback album "Cave-In!" in 2000. Along the way we discuss their debut E.P. "Jack The Ripper" and how it became a favourite of The Horrors, along with their first album, the impeccably titled "Tyrants of Teen Trash". We play tracks from each of their albums and their latest single alongside a pick of various influences and favourite songs from The Haunted, The Chords, Kit & The Outlaws, The Prisoners and The Sorrows. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Bryan Koh: “If you think about the grocers in Lucky Plaza, you realize that, besides the saba (bananas) and the odd bunch of malunggay (moringa), everything else there is convenience food. And I really think that has had a huge part to play in the general perception of Filipino food, that – oh, it's a convenience cuisine! And that's absolutely not true.” Koh, cookbook writer and co-owner of Chalk Farm and Milk Moons, joins Singapore Noodles founder Pamelia Chia to share his love for Filipino food, plus: *Best practices before traveling & how to get an insider's view on another country's food* *Why Filipino food is so maligned and misunderstood in Singapore* *Techniques and concepts that underpin Filipino cooking* *How the use and reliance on convenience food has shaped the general perception of Filipino food* *The challenges of defining Peranakan food* *Why the notion of ‘authenticity' is a problematic one*

My guess is that they all have addressed the things we'll get to in this episode. Sure, we talk among ourselves about how, “You gotta take yourself seriously, or how, “We're businesses.” But what does any of that mean? I'll talk to Duff about some of the practical things we can do to start treating ourselves as the proper businesses we should be, as well as strategies for building and maintaining our audience. On the 200th anniversary of the birth of Friedrich Engels, his biographer Tristram Hunt looks at how both Engels and Karl Marx were deeply affected by their time in London in the second half of the 19th century. London, then the heart of the British Empire, transformed the thinking of these two revolutionary philosophers on finance, on working people's lives, on cities, and on women voting. Hunt will look at the remarkable personal and family lives of the 'The Old Londoners' as they became known, in their North London homes at Primrose Hill and Chalk Farm.A lecture by Dr Tristram Hunt 6 OctoberThe transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College website: https://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/engels-marxGresham College has been giving free public lectures since 1597. The Pink Hotel (Picador USA) We are very excited to have Anna Stothard and Davy Rothbart together in conversation at Skylight! You know Rothbart as the founder of the book/magazine series FOUND. Stothard's debut novel, THE PINK HOTEL, is generating a dizzying amount of buzz. Catch them in conversation here at Skylight Books. "Startling....The Pink Hotel is a spellbinding story about identity and inheritance, and how we know who we are."--The Daily Beast "Astonishingly good...Stothard's writing is accomplished and very engaging."--The Times (London) "Matters of personal identity underlie an exhilarating ride through L.A.'s seamier side in the company of a hard-bitten yet highly engaging protagonist."--Daily Mail (London) A seventeen-year-old girl pieces together the mystery of her mother's life and death among the bars and bedrooms of Los Angeles in this dazzling debut novel. A raucous, drug-fueled party has taken over a boutique hotel on Venice Beach--it's a memorial for Lily, the now-deceased, free-spirited proprietress of the place. Little do the attendees know that Lily's estranged daughter--and the nameless narrator of this striking novel--is among them, and she has just walked off with a suitcase of Lily's belongings. Abandoned by Lily many years ago, she has come a long way to learn about her mother, and the stolen suitcase--stuffed with clothes, letters, and photographs--contains not only a history of her mother's love life, but perhaps also the key to her own identity. As the tough, resourceful narrator tracks down her mother's former husbands, boyfriends, and acquaintances, a risky reenactment of her life begins to unfold. Lily had a knack for falling in love with the wrong people, and one man, a fashion photographer turned paparazzo, has begun to work his sinuous charms on the young woman. Told with high style and noirish flare, Anna Stothard's The Pink Hotel is a powerfully evocative debut novel about wish fulfillment, reckless impulse, and how we discover ourselves. ANNA STOTHARD studied English at Oxford and then moved to Los Angeles, where she was awarded a screenwriting scholarship with the masters program at the American Film Institute. She is currently living in Chalk Farm, London, and writing her next novel. DAVY ROTHBART is a frequent contributor to This American Life and a variety of magazines, the founder of Found Magazine and the editor of its various bestselling anthologies, and the author of The Lone Surfer of Montana, Kansas. He splits his time between Ann Arbor, Michigan, and Los Angeles, California. His fourth book, My Heart Is an Idiot, will be available in paperback this September. Sue Lawley's castaway this week is the actor Colin Firth. He created an iconic moment in British television history when, as Jane Austen's hero Mr Darcy, he emerged wet-shirted from his stately lake. To his surprise, he became a sex symbol, was dubbed the 'male Ursula Andress' and was voted Britain's Most Popular Actor in a BBC poll. He went on to send up the role on the big screen - as the ironically-named Mark Darcy, the brooding boyfriend of Bridget Jones. He always knew he wanted to act - from the moment when, as a five year old boy, he took on the role of Jack Frost at a school panto. He studied at the Drama Centre in London's Chalk Farm - where one of his teachers, Christopher Fettes, said he was by nature a poet and compared his acting to that of Paul Schofield. Married to an Italian woman and with two young sons, he now divides his time between life in London and in Italy.[Taken from the original programme material for this archive edition of Desert Island Discs]Favourite track: Opening of the Kyrie from Mass in C Minor by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Book: Stories by Woody Allen Luxury: His guitar
