On Episode 413 of the Dale Jr. Download, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and co-host Mike Davis sit down with longtime NASCAR crew member Steve Hmiel. The Syracuse, New York native first entered the NASCAR garage in the mid-1970s when he took a job working with Tex Powell, building race cars for drivers like Benny Parsons. The interview discusses Hmiel's first high-profile opportunity when he was hired on as a fabricator at the legendary Petty Enterprises in 1975. Hmiel gives listeners a fascinating look at the Petty operation and what the NASCAR Cup scene was like at that time. Hmiel also provides an extraordinary perspective on the inception of Jack Roush Racing's stock car team, which he helped form with Robin Pemberton in late 1987. Dale Jr. and Steve debrief the 1990 Cup season, where Roush driver Mark Martin squared off against Dale Earnhardt Sr. for the points championship. They also discuss events from the heyday of Dale Earnhardt Inc., where Hmiel joined as a consultant and manager in 1998. Through an organization shake-up, Steve actually ended up crew chief for Dale Jr. in the middle of the 2005 season, helping guide him to victory at Chicagoland Speedway. Dale, Mike, and Steve are able to look back at that win and what it meant to not only the team at that time but Dale's career as a whole. Well, that was awful. The All-Star race needs a total reboot, no doubt about it. Ethan and Connor are in agreement that the next thing that should turn laps at Texas Motor Speedway is a bulldozer. They discuss Kyle Busch's massive crash, the unnecessary caution coming out mere feet from the end of the race, Blaney winning the race twice, and NASCAR's ignorance of safety issues. In segment 2, we discuss the rumored return of Chicagoland Speedway, and Trackhouse Racing's recently announced Project 91, a part time car that will feature international superstar drivers! In segment 3, we preview the upcoming crown jewel event, the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, including a fantasy segment from Eric! Mae and I talk through in-car footage of my High Performance Driving Event at Autobahn Country Club near Joliet Illinois. Autobahn is a member-only racetrack country club across several large cornfields from Chicagoland Speedway. Because members have the right to 1/2 the course every weekend, NASA decided to rent the track on a Federal Holiday Monday giving us a rare chance to run the full layout. I ran this event in the "Stinger" my 1996 Nissan 240SX with bolt-on mods, but full roll cage, racing seat and 5 point harness.

Dale Earnhardt Jr hangs out with old friend Matt Kenseth, as he makes a comeback behind the wheel when NASCAR returns to racing. T he former Cup Champion enlightens Dale Jr. and co-host Mike Davis about his refined workout regiment and how he is approaching this comeback. Speaking of coming back, Matt tells us that he never did use the "R" word, so he never actually retired. So how has his family taken his return to the NASCAR life? And what will this new social-distanced NASCAR life be like? Kenseth also shares how the new deal with Ganassi went down and how he is going into this first race with so many unknowns. He reveals the origins of his original nickname, what he really thinks of watching the iRacing Pro-Invitational Series and how he thinks Dale Jr. is "cheap." It’s race week once again and Brett Griffin and Freddie Kraft will be back to work this Sunday. Ahead of NASCAR’s return at Darlington, they cover the advantage some spotters may have, the breakdown of a team’s roster, restrictions placed on win celebrations, and how spotters will communicate. Chicagoland Speedway’s future is in question and the guys share what they’ve heard including the track’s valuable land, potential for a downtown Chicago street course and sponsor fallout from leaving the Chicago market. Darlington has produced nine consecutive different winners, will that streak continue in the next two events? The guys debate. Brett discusses the massive opportunity NASCAR has this weekend and why young drivers need to deliver and put on a big show. Plus, the spotting duo share tales from their family beach trip and why they may have to dodge drones this weekend.

This episode is a great discussion with Todd McNabney, the owner and lead designer at HEROIC Racing Apparel, and his motorcycle racing buddy, Chris Onwiler, who in addition to being an accomplished racer, track day coach and writer, is also a customer and huge advocate of HEROIC’s motorcycle racing gear. I met Todd at the International Motorcycle Show in New York City last December, when I bought a pair of his HEROIC SP-R Pro racing gloves as the first item in my new kit of gear for doing track days this season. I was very impressed with Heroic’s products, the message behind their products, and their loyal customer base, and thought it would be cool to bring you the story behind HEROIC Racing and how the company got started. And for those listeners only interested in riding on the street, in addition to their products for the race track, HEROIC applies the same ingenuity and care that they put into protecting riders on the track into their line of motorcycle gear for street riders, such as their street gloves and Kevlar hoodie. When women join a male-dominated sport, it can be difficult to gain the respect of fans, officials, and fellow athletes. Those issues can be even more exacerbated when women challenge the sports world to consider new, more ethical ways of living. But that didn’t stop Leilani Münter. Leilani is a Biology graduate from UC San Diego, a professional race car driver, and an environmental activist. She realized early in her career that her mission was to bridge the worlds between racing and environmental work. Despite early criticism, her race cars have carried messages about renewable energy, she has adopted an acre for every race she’s run since 2007, and she treated race fans to 30,000 Impossible Burgers at the Chicagoland Speedway. Today she joins Dotsie and Alexandra to chat about her advocacy for solar power, electric cars, plant-based diets, animal rights, and population control. You’ll hear her story of making the switch, how she brought renewable energy to the race track, and how she’s opening up the population dialogue in an upcoming film. Watch out, because Leilani is as powerful in her arguments as she is on the track. Get ready to be convinced. What we discuss in this episode: - How Leilani used her race career to bring her environmental message to millions and 30,000 Impossible Burgers to her fans - The intense physical challenges that come with racing, how Leilani prepared for them, and how going vegan changed her performance - How going down the rabbit hole of documentaries like The Cove encouraged Leilani to go vegan, plus how she’s changed the way she approaches friends and family about making the switch - How a discussion about An Inconvenient Truth helped Leilani realize that her purpose was to bridge the world between racing and environmental activism - Leilani’s work with Racing Extinction and why educating people about species threatened with extinction help them see the impact of their behavior - Striking statistics about population growth, and why we need to start seeing environmental destruction as a symptom of our rate of procreation - The two words Leilani uses to ease into the conversation about population with strangers without sending them on the defensive - Are we losing the forest for the trees? Leilani shares why she was criticized for promoting the Impossible Whopper, why she stands by her decision, and the statement from Pat O. Brown that puts their animal testing in context - How Leilani offset the fuel she was burning during races by adopting and protecting acres of the rainforest, plus how she got an entirely solar-powered pit station - Follow Leilani on Twitter at @LeilaniMunter, on Instagram at @LeilaniMunter, on Facebook at @LeilaniMunter, and on er website at leilani.green. - To support our mission to educate, inspire, and embolden the world to lean into eating pants instead of baby cow growth food, donate today to spread the word.
