In this heart-centered episode of Aspire to Lead, I'm joined by globally recognized speaker, educator, and author Angela Maiers to explore the movement that changed everything—#YouMatter. Angela shares the powerful story behind the origin of this global initiative and how a simple affirmation can shift mindsets, unlock potential, and ignite lasting change in students, educators, and communities. We unpack how leaders can go beyond surface-level praise to cultivate environments where everyone feels seen, valued, and empowered. Angela also reveals how her workshops help people rediscover their purpose and reignite their passion for contribution, and we dive into her latest project—M is for Mattering, a science-based picture book designed to embed the language of significance in learners from the start. This episode is less of a conversation and more of a call to remember what we too often forget: that real leadership begins with seeing, hearing, and believing in the people right in front of us. Tune in, take a breath, and get ready to lead like you truly mean it. About Angela Maiers: Futurist. Innovator. Educator. Entrepreneur. Change Maker. A couple years ago, I had a call with the founder of Choose2Matter, and I love her message. Choose2Matter is a global movement that challenges us to make "mattering" a way of life. When people accept they matter and know their actions count - learning, lives and worlds change. I feel like Say It With Gratitude is on a similar mission; that is to make everyone feel appreciated. This reminds me of the interview I did with Orly Wahba, author of Kindness Boomerang, for the Happy Life Summit. When she was in high school, she and her family went through a really tough time, and Orly had to miss several weeks of school. In that time, no one from her school checked on her, and Orly felt like she didn't matter. From that point on, she made it her mission to make everyone she encountered feel seen. To feel like they matter. I think this is such an important thing to think about. How can we make others feel like they matter? We all want that feeling, right? To be valued, and validated and appreciated.
On today’s #WorkTrends podcast we’re talking about the skills our workforce will need for the future — and why we need them now. The skills we’re going to need to achieve in the workplace of the future have everything to do with attributes, behaviors, habits and mindset that support collaboration, creativity and innovation, and empathy. And the new workforce is trending to high-performing, sometimes cross-functional teams, with less hierarchy and more independence. To thrive in this context, we need to harness our incredible potential as humans — and be able to use our skills to excel. This is going to matter increasingly, as we face the hybrid workplace of the near future. Today’s guest, Angela Maiers, is here to get us mapping to the skills of the future. Angela is an edupreneur, a futurist, an author, an innovator, and the founder of Choose2Matter, a global nonprofit.

Angela founded the global movement, Choose2Matter in 2014. The non-profit organization grew out of the impassioned response to a TEDTalk she gave on the power of two simple words, that went viral. YOU MATTER! She is the author of nine books, including the highly-acclaimed Genius Matters and Classroom Habitudes. Futurist. Innovator. Educator. Entrepreneur. Change Maker. Angela Maiers is on a mission to disrupt the status quo and to empower every individual to change their own world, if not the world around them for the better. It is fair to say she leaves no room unchanged. Please join me in welcoming – Angela Maiers! Most passionate about As long as I can remember, my passion and my mission have been to educate. I’m a linguist, and the root of the word “educate” means “to lead out.” That’s what people don’t quite understand. They think education is putting information in, when it is the complete opposite. It is seeing the gifts in front of you and helping to lead them out, to move them so they can be contributed to the world. So, to be able to lead out, it doesn’t matter if I’m with five-year-olds (which is how I started my career) or with Fortune 500 companies. The genius that exists within individuals and organizations is what my mission, what my mantra, what my whole essence is about: to educate, to lead out. Angela’s career and entrepreneurial development For as long as I can remember, I have loved learning. I was really good at it and very passionate about everything I could get my hands on. That had to do with how we learn, how the brain learns. I actually put myself through medical school and studied neuroscience. My entrepreneurial side; I worked to put myself through university and all my jobs had something to do with special communities and special needs students, from severe and profoundly autistic to emotionally disturbed to drug-addicted. I worked with them and their mothers to get them back on a pathway of purpose. It’s what made me feel alive, and it’s what taught me what true passion is. As I said before, it’s not what you’re good at. I was good at school, but it’s not what I love to do, which is learning. I love learning about the brain. I love every single part of neuroscience. But it wasn’t what I was meant to do. My entrepreneurial spirit led me to become an educator. I quit medical school, went back to college, and became a teacher. No one I knew supported me because, at the time I was going to school, it was – and still is – a really big deal to be in medical school. I was the first woman in my family to go to college, the first woman in my family to pursue the pathway of medicine. There’s prestige in that. Unfortunately, there’s not as much prestige in being a teacher. So, when I went back home and announced to everybody that I had found my passion, that I was going to quit medical school and be a teacher, I was met with a lot of resistance. I think that’s how you know that something is a true passion. No matter what, no matter how much resistance I got and no matter how challenging the act of educating is, the act of not being a teacher was akin to not breathing. Angela’s TED talk Then I did this TED talk. With TED, you get 17 minutes to tell the world how you’re going to change the world. I had this beautiful talk about social media all ready to go. The night before the talk, I watched my six favorite TED talks. They were all from profound people. I started doubting myself. I started thinking, ‘Who am I? I can’t do this. I don’t have anything worthy to say.’ And then I thought, ‘You...

My guest is Angela Maiers. Angela founded Choose2Matter, which is a non-profit that helps individuals to embrace their value and their potential contribution. Choose2Matter has evolved into a movement that now supports students, parents, educators, and employees, literally around the world. Her work at over 60 thousand classrooms across 100 countries has rallied more than a million children to be together to launch over 170 social enterprises. Listen To The Podcast: Resources: www.AngelaMaiers.com www.Choose2Matter.org Transcription: Mitch Matthews: Angela, welcome to the podcast! Angela Maiers: Well, I'm so honored to be here my friends. It's wonderful to watch you in action and be a part of this, you were just a huge supporter of my mission and my work and I feel like we've connected at a soul level, so it's great to reconnect. Mitch Matthews: It's crazy because we go way back to when the Big Dream Gathering was just getting started. Angela Maiers: I know, yeah. Mitch Matthews: Your things were just starting to explode. So it feels like a class reunion. Angela Maiers: It does. Mitch Matthews: I love it. Well, DREAM THINK DOers are going to love you and love your story. Let's tell them a little bit more about Choose to Matter. Let's give them a snapshot of what it is that you do. As well as you can in a condensed way, tell us a little bit more about Choose to Matter. Angela Maiers: I think I have created a framework for people to make a commitment to contribute their best self to the world. And by best self or best selves, that could be individual, that could be organizational, it could be our entire community and humanity. And when you look at the reasons why human beings don't contribute their best self to the world, with not just confidence but with also a sense of calmness, is because there is a terror in the world, and I use that world not lightly, of insignificance. Angela Maiers: It is the single most common ailment of the modern world. And it doesn't discriminate. Even though Choose to Matter started with my mission in education, the feeling that we don't matter doesn't discriminate by age, by title, by position, by role. We're all fighting for our enough-ness in the world. Mitch Matthews: And you've been studying this, you've been teaching this. And I know it's a generational thing, you've been going back deep into the science of it and all that, but would you say, and this is probably just a softball question, but would you say, how has social media and all of that contributed to kind of that "see me" feel? That longing to be seen. Angela Maiers: I think that you see both the best of humanity, social media or media in general or technology is neutral. It is an amplifier of human behavior and emotion. Mitch Matthews: Yeah. Angela Maiers: So part of the addiction in social media is our DNA level need, not just desire, but DNA level needs to be seen, to be heard and to understand that we have value. And so just the simple act of saying another human being's name is such a rarity, believe it or not. It's a rarity even in schools. Kids can go period after period, week after week, semester after semester and never hear their name. It's the most important word in the human language. It defines our existence. Angela Maiers: And so when you hear your name over, or where we have not given people real pathways and real practices to acting and behaving as if they mattered, so they pick shortcuts, like the naughty kid. We just want to be noticed and so we'll do it in any way that we can. And we have a whole world of naughty kids. Mitch Matthews: I was just going to say, that's not limited to the classroom, right? Angela Maiers: No it's not. Mitch Matthews: It's so true. And I know that so much of what you do could be defined, the simple arts, but the simple arts are so important of literally looking someone in the eye and saying, "You matter" right?

Angela founded the global movement, Choose2Matter in 20XX, with a singular mission to help individuals recognize their value and potential contribution to change both their own lives and the world. The non-profit organisation grew out of the impassioned response to a TEDTalk she gave on the power of two simple words, that went viral. YOU MATTER! An educator for 30 years, Angela has shared her message of Mattering not only with students and teachers, but with businesses large and small and organisations of all kinds. Her work has been shared in 78,000 classrooms across 100 countries that has rallied more than a million children. Her work with industries is finding new ways to ignite the genius of employees, successfully addressing a $15 trillion employee engagement problem. Angela Maiers is considered one of today’s most influential thought leaders in education and transformative thinking. Here is Angela's You Matter Ted Talk! It's emotional! Podcast episode transcription! Welcome to build business acumen. My name is Nathaniel Schooler, like a school with an ER, it's really lovely to see you again, Angela. And today you're going to tell me how to build a community of fiercely loyal fans, people that just take action, right? Angela: Good morning to you and it is lovely to see you. I am so excited about this new year. I think community like everything else, like networking has become a buzzword. So I think it's important to understand the core of community. How to build a loyal community is key! So if you take community offline, I grew up in a town of 641 people, and we were a community and the key factor in any community. No matter what size of the level of contribution that each member not only has, but feels responsible for, it feels when you're in a loyal community that matters to you, that you want to be a part of; contribution is a non negotiable because you understand that every member in that community has a gift that is needed by another and that the idea of withholding that gift up withholding everything that you are towards something bigger doesn't exist. So you never take for granted anyone else in the community. And you never take for granted your role in that community. And that's really different. And a network which is just a body of people that potentially are like minded, but they don't have the same level of commitment where they're just, they're just, they, they are a part of something, but they don't necessarily have that deep, you know, DNA level driven idea that they must can interview. Nathaniel: So what do you think? So,you see me looking up at the sky there, I have this really bad habit. I mean, people aren't watching this, thankfully, because I just have this bad habit of just sort of looking up when I'm thinking. it's very interesting what you're just saying. I think, I think from a personal standpoint, I think it depends on actually the cause that that you're focusing on. I mean, for me, as an individual. Since my network became really strong. Which is literally the past couple months. I've been focusing on, just working out who in my network will help me to create content, right? That is the most important thing, help me share that content and deliver massive value when I interview them. So that's my purpose is sharing that content with people to make their lives better. Okay, so that's my, that's my actual purpose with that content. Yeah, so for me, as an individual, I think I actually fit into what you're talking about, quite nicely. Problem is, most people, their actual networks are shallow. They have not communicated their value to people. I mean, I know you and I know you've built communities that are so big, like millions of kids, right!

Angela Maiers is the founder of Choose2Matter, a universal movement that challenges us to make “mattering” a way of life. When people accept that they matter and that their actions count, lives, learning change and our world changes. Choose2Matter challenges people in these three ways: To ACCEPT that You Matter and that your actions count; To ACCELERATE the message that everyone matters; To ACT by leveraging collective genius to solve problems that break your heart. Angela's organization was inspired by her June 2011 talk at TEDxDesMoines titled “You Matter,”, She has spent 25 years as an educator and has spoken at conferences around the world. Education, Teaching, Genius, Passion, Schools Summary What is genius? Is it some supernatural ability of the mind that relatively few are born with? Or is it something that everyone has and can be unleashed if approached correctly? We'll discuss that in our Thought of the Day. And later in today's interview, we'll talk with Angela Maiers, a professional educator who is on a mission to liberate the genius in school children. Learn how she and her team are doing exactly that, one classroom at a time. That and more on today's show. Bob's Thought of the Day You'll discover: Why “genius” is much more a result of focused, concentrated effort than natural talent. How passion and natural skill are related to excellence. Why you must have both passion and a plan in order to achieve excellence. Interview with Angela Maiers You'll discover: Why most of the innovations at Google came from employees pursuing their passion. How to impact a child's life by seeing and speaking to them as a leader, reader, writer, or other change-maker. Why schools are not typically recruiters or incubators of talent, and why you're only measured in your relation to being above or below average. The truth that no matter who you are, you are an educator. How to change a child's life by seeing them as change agents rather than just recipients of our world. Classroom 2.0 LIVE webinar: May 18, 2013. "Genius Hour is a precious time, loved by all my students. It is when they are allowed to develop their own inquiry question about whatever it is that they want to explore," so says Gallit Zvi (@gallit_z), one of our presenters. Joining Gallit was Denise Krebs (@mrsdkrebs), Hugh McDonald (@hughtheteacher), and Joy Kirr (@joykirr), who are all middle school educators. They shared the basic philosophy of Genius Hour or 20% Time, why you and your students should do it, some examples of Genius Hour projects, how this kind of learning informs all we do in the classroom, and scaling up Genius Hour to change the world and become part of the Choose2Matter and Quest2Matter movements. #TChat Radio is all new on Tuesday, May 7, 2013, at 7:30 pm ET (4:30 pm PT). The worlds of education and business are moving farther and farther apart. The skills shortage many economists and other "world of work" thought leaders keep talking about is real and leaving millions behind. Schools aren't encouraging students to become bold thinkers, dreamers, and doers -- and businesses are expecting them to be just those persona types without much investment. This is why the Choose2Matter and TalentCulture #TChat communities are coming together this week for #TChat Radio and #TChat Twitter Chat. Together we can choose to bridge the skills gap and help students find mentors in communities like ours to greatly enhance the lives of these amazing young people today. #TChat co-creators and hosts, Meghan M. Biro and Kevin W. Grossman welcome this week's guests, Choose2Matter co-founders Angela Maiers and Mark Moran. This will be another great "world of work" show, so we hope to see you here! **SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: We’re thrilled to announce our first “world of work” partnership — with Achievers. Read about it here!
