For the finale of Revolutions Per Movie's Pavement Week, we are joined by Pavement's Spiral Stairs (aka Scott Kannberg) & Robert Greene, editor/producer of the new documentary Pavements. We discuss its kaleidoscopic storytelling, which weaves together a star-studded biopic, a traditional band documentary, a Pavement museum, and the Pavement jukebox musical all into a feature-length film.We also talk about Robert's long-term push-pull artistic relationship with the film's director Alex Ross Perry, Spiral's involvement with Louder Than You Think (a documentary about early Pavement drummer Gary Young), the process of recording the Pavement EP Watery, Domestic, the sadness surrounding Pavement's initial breakup, how the film helped Spiral appreciate what the band accomplished, the epic saga of Spiral vs. Lollapalooza, how the "biopic" in Pavements cut close to the bone while still being completely false, the elevated mystery surrounding Pavement, why their three-sided record Wowee Zowee influenced the final edit of the film, the forthcoming soundtrack LP, the future of Pavement and much more! There's no culture!!! There's no spies!!!So let's end Pavement Week with this heartfelt, inspiring, and hilarious episode of Revolutions Per Movie.PAVEMENT: pavementband.com/REVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE:Host Chris Slusarenko (Eyelids, Guided By Voices, owner of Clinton Street Video rental store) is joined by actors, musicians, comedians, writers & directors who each week pick out their favorite music documentary, musical, music-themed fiction film or music videos to discuss. We discuss what it's like being part of the Star Wars cinematic universe, why Tom Waits is Galen's all-time favorite artist, the long-ago arthouse vibe of the film, what works and doesn't in the film, how Waits slowed down his voice in the film to create unease for the audience, Waits' original stage play, the jarring interstitial moments in the film, musicians Marc Ribot and Ralph Carney, the acting of Tom Waits, the early traditional albums of Waits, why it's so hard to find the film, Film Noir fixation, how Waits has influenced Galen's creative process, Rust Never Sleeps, the staging and lighting decisions for the film, what songs were sadly excluded from the film, dancing in movie aisles, the growth and journey of Waits' Frank character, Robert Wilson, the lack of documentation of Waits' visual work and stage performances, and even Tom Waits' lawsuit against Doritos. So get your tickets early, before the usher waltzes you away, on this week's episode of Revolutions Per Movie!!!GALEN HOWARD:https://www.galenhoward.com/https://www.instagram.com/galenhoward/?hl=en Click here to get EXCLUSIVE BONUS WEEKLY Revolutions Per Movie content on our Patreon Hosted on Acast. This week, we talked to documentary filmmaker Katherine Linton about her Sundance Channel documentary Follow My Voice: The Music of Hedwig, which follows the students of the Harvey Milk School in NYC and John Cameron Mitchell & Stephen Trask of Hedwig & The Angry Inch (and Revolutions Per Movie host Chris Slusarenko) putting the charity album together. We discuss the stress of not letting Kim Deal of The Breeders know that Frank Black was also appearing on the record, the unknown magic and chance in picking subjects for documentaries, the experience of having Jonathan Richman singing only to you, and Yoko Ono being asked to be slapped on the back while recording her tracks. So come put on some makeup and turn on the 8-track on this week's episode of Revolutions Per Movie.REVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE:Host Chris Slusarenko (Eyelids, Guided By Voices, owner of Clinton Street Video rental store) is joined by actors, musicians, comedians, writers & directors who each week pick out their favorite music documentary, musical, music-themed fiction film or music videos to discuss. On this episode, Marc talks with Corey duBrowa, author of “An Ideal For Living: A Celebration of the EP,” published in early 2024. It's an overview of some of the best EP's from the 1950s until the present, with decade-themed chapters containing entries on individual releases by a wide range of writers. In addition, duBrowa wrote an opening chapter on the history of the format, and put together a final chapter of what he and his friends deem the best EPs of all time. There's also an intro by Spoon's Britt Brown and an epilogue by former Guided By Voices member Chris Slusarenko. As duBrowa writes, “With an immediacy that flies in the face of an LP's “grand concept,” an EP turns out to be a great way for an artist to write a few songs and get them out quickly, without fanfare or pomp.”We hope you enjoy Marc's conversation with Corey duBrowa!
This week, we talk to comedian/actor Andy Kindler (Bob's Burgers, Late Night w/ David Letterman, Maron, Everybody Loves Raymond) & Mike Lisk (executive producer of The Best Show w/ Tom Scharpling and host of Egg Foo What?!) about a documentary whose subject matter is dear to both of their hearts (yet full of confusion and mystery for host Chris Slusarenko), The Grateful Dead documentary series, LONG STRANGE TRIP. These two have a history with each other, and out of the gate, an old Zappa argument and apology appear out of nowhere, and then it's off to the races. We discussed whether Bob Weir is essential to the band, the stage banter of the Grateful Dead, Andy's 70s rock band TransFusion, their viewpoints on Pigpen—the original rapper, which of the two drummers had the goods, Mountain Dew vs. Morning Dew, Andy's LSD induced concert going-ons and his naked prog-rock band stories, Mike's experience of almost being trampled at a Grateful Dead concert, pocket pool advice from the band, Tom Scharpling, Robert Hunter's lyrics, Donna & Keith, Mike meeting Garcia as a teenager, sneaking drugs into concerts, digitally erasing crowd nudity from concert footage, why they think they are the quintessential American band, The Velvet Underground and the dissonance of the Grateful Dead, Disco Dead, Marvin Gaye, can you be a cynic and give yourself over to the band, losing punk rock friends to the Dead, Altamont, tape trading, Europe '72, the sadness in the Jerry Garcia story, Hot Tuna, The Warlocks, Dead & Co., how the documentary is critical of a portion of their fan base, the Dead telling their fans to stop being assholes, Mickey Finn's father ripping the band off, the Phil Zone and Mike gives us a crash course on the essential shows and recordings to listen to.So let's time your trip perfectly on this very funny yet heartfelt episode of Revolutions Per Movie.ANDY KINDLER:twitter.com/AndyKindlerMIKE LISK:thebestshow.netEgg Foo What: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/egg-foo-what/id1635904703REVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE:Host Chris Slusarenko (Eyelids, Guided By Voices, owner of Clinton Street Video rental store) is joined by actors, musicians, comedians, writers & directors who each week pick out their favorite music documentary, musical, music-themed fiction film or music videos to discuss. Hello and welcome to Revolutions Per Movie, a podcast about music documentaries, music-based fiction films, and the art of the music video.I'm your host, Chris Slusarenko— a musician who has been in bands such as Eyelids & Guided By Voices and was once the owner of an independent video store in Portland, Oregon, for over 22 years. This week, we talk to Frontier Records founder Lisa Fancher, who chose the 1983 American hardcore documentary “Another State Of Mind” to dig into. We also discuss how Lisa got involved in the ‘70s punk scene, the police violence of the L.A. Punk riots, the innocence of a band booking a U.S. tour, why you don't put Minor Threat footage in your own documentary, and getting booted in the head from stage divers. So come meet Monk and learn the correct way to pogo on this episode of Revolutions Per Movie.Frontier Records:http://www.frontierrecords.com/Theme by Eyelids 'My Caved In Mind'www.musicofeyelids.bandcamp.comArtwork by Jeff T. Walsh, who chose the Brian Jonestown Massacre/Dandy Warhols documentary film “Dig!” to discuss. We are also joined later by a surprise guest from the Brian Jonestown Massacre camp, Travis Snyder, who was the band's tour manager for almost 20 years. We talk about how the film was initially commissioned to be a reality series by MTV, how bands in the 90s navigated the major label-feeding frenzy, the unhealthy lifestyle of band life, and how this documentary really did not tell the whole truth. So listen in as we discuss the revolution that never happened on this episode, Revolutions Per Movie. Today's guest makes me wish I had written more letters. It's Eyelids' Chris Slusarenko. Not only is he the guitarist for the band, he's also a sweater enthusiast. But before any of that, he was pen pals with Peter Buck. Kind of.That was in Chris' Death Midget days. But once Death Midget ran its course, he and his brother Nate started the band Sprinkler. They signed to a pre-Nevermind Sub Pop and witnessed the explosion of grunge first-hand. Sprinkler was eventually disbanded when Chris and Nate decided they wanted a band where they had more control. So the band Svelt was next. Then came Chris' unusual solo project about Colonel Jeffery Pumpernickel. Around this time Chris started working with Robert Pollard of Guided By Voices. What a ride that has been! From The Takeovers and Boston Spaceship to actually joining Guided By Voices, Chris' relationship with Bob has yielded much fruit! It also led to the accidental band, Eyelids. Eyelids is so much fun. The new album, A Colossal Waste Of Light, follows the previous albums in its humor and awesome musicianship. It also includes Chris' longtime friend, Peter Buck. So if you like well crafted pop songs that are guitar-centric, pick up A Colossal Waste Of Light by Eyelids on Bandcamp or wherever you get music. Chris Slusarenko of the Portland-based band Eyelids joins Al to talk about The Fall's 1983 album, Perverted by Language, and their “Kicker Conspiracy” single, which was released in the same year. Chris explains how he wound up getting up obsessed with The Fall, why he chose to focus on these particular records for this episode and how The Fall has influenced his own creative process. He also talks about Eyelids' recently-released fourth album, A Colossal Waste of Light, and the experience of being produced by and touring with Peter Buck.Chris made repeated reference to The Annotated Fall, which lists and, yes, annotates the lyrics to The Fall's songs. Eyelids - "Colossal Waste of Light" from the 2023 album A Colossal Waste of Light on Jealous Butcher. Portland supergroup Eyelids have gotten even more powerful on their fourth LP, A Colossal Waste of Light, which will be released on March 10 via Jealous Butcher Records. Songwriters John Moen (of The Decemberists) and Chris Slusarenko (formerly of Guided by Voices) are now joined by Victor Krummenacher (of Camper Van Beethoven) alongside existing members Jonathan Drews (guitar) and Paulie Pulvirenti (drums). Their latest album is produced by R.E.M.'s Peter Buck, also a guest musician on the release. He'll be accompanying the band on March 11th when Eyelids plays the Sunset Tavern in Seattle. Today's Song of the Day was released with a video from their longtime director John Clark; the band members are captured in papier-mâché, using figurines made by Scottish artist Jo Hamilton and bodies built by multi-talent Moen. "We still have that Little Rascals 'let's put on a show' with every Eyelids video," the band state on their website. "This one might take the cake, though. It's beautiful and ridiculous in equal measure." Read the full story at KEXP.orgSupport the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
As Chris and Mike look back at the penultimate track off of the band's 1977 release IN COLOR, they're joined by Chris Slusarenko of Portland indie rock darlings Eyelids (and formerly of Guided By Voices) who have a new full-length hitting store shelves on March 10th, the Peter Buck produced A COLOSSAL WASTE OF LIGHT.

Eyelids - "The Accidental Falls" from the 2020 album The Accidental Falls on Jealous Butcher Records When Larry Beckett offers up his lyrics to you, it's hard to say "no." Beckett was a long-time collaborator with legendary singer/songwriter Tim Buckley, and even wrote the lyrics to the now-iconic and heavily-covered 1969 single "Song to the Siren." He's also the father of the kid who's best friends with Chris Slusarenko's son, putting this creative connection into place. Slusarenko is a member of Portland supergroup Eyelids, which features members of The Decemberists, Guided by Voices, Elliott Smith, Quasi, and Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks. Eyelids' latest album, The Accidental Falls, is a 13-song collection utilizing Beckett's lyrics, produced by fellow Portland resident, R.E.M.'s Peter Buck. For the title track, Beckett drew from the works of 18th and 19th century German writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe for "probably the most rocking translation of Goethe's work to date." Read the full post on KEXP.org Support the show.
