Jojo Rabbit (2019), directed by Taika Waititi, was an instant hit when it was released, deftly juggling satire, earnestness, and drama to great effect. Many fans of the film were surprised to discover it was based on a novel, Caging Skies, by Christine Leunens, but we found out the hard way that the film is a shocking departure from this book, which is a twisted story of the toxic relationship between captor and captive, exploring themes of toxic masculinity and utter despair. Strap in as we discuss this delightful and touching film and the unsettling details of the book we're sure will shock you!

The last time Christine Leunens joined Nine to Noon it was from LA, just hours ahead of the Oscars, where Taika Waititi would win Best Adapted Screenplay for JoJo Rabbit. It was adapted, of course, from Christine's book Caging Skies. In the two years since then, she's been busy researching a particularly tumultuous time in New Zealand's history - the 1980s and the impact the Springbok Tour, nuclear testing in the Pacific and bombing of the Rainbow Warrior had at the time. The result is a new novel, In Amber's Wake, a love story set in Auckland, Cambridge and Antarctica, which is already destined for the silver screen, with help from Thelma and Louise producer Mimi Polk Gitlin.

In Amber's Wake by Christine Leunens, who of course wrote the book on which the movie Jojo Rabbit was based (it was called Caging Skies). Local author. It's a romantic drama set in New Zealand during the 1980s.Ethan Grieg, a film student, is in love with his close friend Amber Deering, an environmental activist, who lives at her family's seemingly picture-perfect stud farm. Amber loves Ethan dearly, but not in the way Ethan longs for. Instead, the man Amber has offered her heart is widower Stuart Reeds, a charming, refined British investor almost two generations older than her. As a Korean war veteran, Stuart is mentally prepared for the long, subtle war that begins between his young rival and himself for Amber's heart. Set against background of the anti-nuclear movement, the Springbok tour and the Rainbow Warrior. Again, Rachel by Marian Keyes. Sequel to Rachel's Holiday all those years ago. Centred around the marvellous Walsh family – Rachel is out of rehab and is in fact the head therapist at the clinic which she attended back in the day. It's terrific – she has a great way of getting real-life onto the page – I think she's greatly undervalued as a quality writer. Her themes are ones which resonate with so many of us – addiction, relationships, love, families – and the dialogue is razor-sharp.

Welcome to Times Will Tell, the weekly podcast from The Times of Israel. This week, in honor of Yom Hashoah, Israel's Holocaust Remembrance Day, we're speaking with Dr. Liat Steir-Livny, who is a senior lecturer in Holocaust, film and culture studies at Sapir Academic College and the Open University. Steir-Livny, the granddaughter of Holocaust survivors, is the author of five books and innumerable articles on the Holocaust in contemporary popular culture, including "Is it O.K to Laugh about it? "(Vallentine Mitchell, 2017), which analyzes Holocaust humor, satire and parody in Israeli culture. We speak about the rampant use of Holocaust humor that has proliferated over the past 20 years in Israel, why it is flourishing and what it symbolizes. Whereas Israelis have accepted Holocaust humor as an integral part of the parlance, Steir-Livny has found that abroad it is still clearly "verboten" and like "poking the bear." Steir-Livny has found that the phenomenon is cross-generational and can be found on all media platforms. On Twitter, for example, Steir-Livny has discovered a treasure trove of "humorous" Anne Frank references. Found out what they represent. We also discuss the increasing trend of the Zikaron Basalon or Remembrance in the Living Room grassroots gatherings and their role today. Spoiler, Steir-Livny credits the program with "saving" Holocaust Remembrance Day. We also speak about recent headlines calling for Yom Hashoa to be turned into a fast day. Taika Waititi is not interested in making movies that please everyone — he says that would be too safe and boring. The writer and director of “Jojo Rabbit” — who also plays a cartoonish Adolph Hitler in a comic coming-of-age story about a Nazi youth who discovers a Jewish girl hiding in his attic — tells host Mark Olsen that he prefers making films that could end his career. Balancing satire and the Holocaust was always going to be tricky, and “Jojo Rabbit” has already divided critics. But only in America is ‘divisive' a bad thing, the New Zealand filmmaker says — everywhere else, it's considered art. Comedy, the filmmaker argues, is an effective weapon against bigotry and authoritarian leaders. The movie is based on the book “Caging Skies” by Christine Leunens. Waititi added comedic elements and an imaginary Führer. Also in this episode, Olsen speaks with the Times culture columnist and critic Mary McNamara about some of the revelations in Ronan Farrow's new book “Catch and Kill,” including Farrow's allegations that NBC News shut down his reporting about disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein. And in the “Glenn Whipp Awards Minute,” entertainment columnist Whipp gives an early survey of the best actress race.
