Andrew Foster, chief investment officer at Seafarer Capital Partners — manager of the Seafarer Overseas Growth Fund — says emerging markets are poised to thrive in an environment where the dollar is weakening against not only foreign currencies but gold, Bitcoin and "a bag of Doritos." Foster says that the fundamentals are improving for emerging markets, which are showing the potential for a second consecutive year of 12 percent growth in earnings despite tariff and trade concerns. He says stronger stock profits combined with currencies getting stronger against the dollar is "a good setup" for investors looking to diversify a portfolio. Todd Rosenbluth, head of research at VettaFi, also talks international investing, going abroad — though to developed markets rather than emerging markets — with his pick for the ETF of the Week. Plus, Chuck talks about how investors might want to adjust portfolio fits — and follow the advice from recent guests — now that the market has bounced back and crossed into positive territory for the year, reversing the big drops that occurred when tariff policies were first announced.

Seafarer's Foster: Short-term volatility is masking emerging markets' opportunities

Andrew Foster, chief investment officer at Seafarer Capital Partners, is seeing a recovery in earnings and fundamentals in emerging markets, and that means that current events are creating froth and noise but that emerging markets should deliver over the intermediate to long-term. Foster says that investors looking to make quick trades will get burned in emerging markets, but says that the earnings recovery is broad-based by both country and by sector, which is encouraging. Foster also gives his take on China, on whether international diversification will pay off better during times of great volatility and more. Juan Leon, senior investment strategist at Bitwise Asset Management, checks in on how crypto currency — which was off more than 20 percent as the market was heading into Monday's 3 percent drawdown — has responded, and how investors should consider the volatility of crypto, particularly as they see it traded over the weekends, when most other assets are static. The market's big moves wiped out a few strong weeks for small-cap stocks, but that is one reason why Todd Rosenbluth, head of research at VettaFi, pickseda small-cap fund as his ETF of the Week. And in the Market Call, Nancy Prial, co-chief executive officer at Essex Investment Management — manager of the 1290 Essex Small Cap Growth fund — goes into further detail on the current opportunities in small-company stocks.

Our guest, Andrew Foster, a renowned portfolio manager and founder of Seafarer Capital Partners, shares his insights on why emerging markets are no longer a growth story. Foster emphasizes that the investment case for emerging markets lies in individual companies rather than countries. He highlights the challenges faced by companies in China, such as government interference and encroachment on operations and governance. Foster also discusses his investment approach, focusing on income and value. Despite the changing landscape, he still finds China investable and continues to research and invest in the country. Andrew Foster, founder and chief investment officer at Seafarer Capital Partners, says that stock prices in emerging markets are depressed -- understandably so -- but he thinks they have been too beaten down, which makes the case for emerging markets as a value play right now. That said, Foster says there is not a strong argument for growth investing in emerging markets now because struggles in China, the hub of the emerging markets, are tamping down the potential for growth in the asset class. Foster notes that China has been decoupling from U.S. markets, and visa versa, which is changing the international markets picture and the outcomes likely based on international politics. Also on the show, David Trainer of New Constructs is back with another IPO that he believes is rotten from the get-go, opening into troubling conditions that will lead to trouble once the market's honeymoon with the new offering is over, and we revisit a recent Marekt Call interview with Stephen Dodson, portfolio manager at The Bretton Fund.

This episode marks an anniversary for the podcast: Three full years' worth of the Seminole Wars Authority. We have done as we said we would do when we set out on this long march. We canvassed far and wide for authorities in possession of the knowledge about the Seminole Wars. Some are historians, John Missall and Jesse Marshall and Chris Kimball. Some are professors, Dr. Jim Cusick and Dr. Joe Knetsch, among many others. Some are artists, such as Johnny Montgomery and Jackson Walker. Some are just self-described regular guys with an interest in living history presentations of this conflict, fellows such as citizen-scholar Jeff Snively and truck driver and surveyor Jerry Morris. Oh yes, we've also interviewed a long list of re-enactors – never call it cosplay, if you value your life. All have something interesting to say and meaningful to contribute to the conversation. Chris Kimball, whom along with Jesse Marshall knows everything, understands everything, and recalls everything about the Seminole Wars tells me he always learns something new and useful from listening to a Seminole Wars podcast. In the middle of August each year at St. Francis Barracks in St. Augustine, two elegant mules pull a caisson symbolically carrying the remains of the soldiers who had died in the Second Seminole War. The procession they lead commemorates the first re-interment of soldiers in Aug. 15, 1842. The commanding officer in charge of military operations in Florida, U.S. Army Col. William Worth, declared an end to hostilities and called for the remains of the fallen to be gathered together and transported to St. Augustine. He detailed that the caissons be pulled by Elegant Mules. Emmitt and Tater are the two mules with whom Thomas F. and Denise Fitzgerald provide to offer “solemn pride” for fallen military veterans today. What I've realized over years of coaching and podcasting is that the majority of people don't realize the impact of the stories they share - on their internal messages, and on the people they're sharing them with. My work with leaders and people who aspire to be leaders follows a similar path to the interviews on my podcast, uncovering pivotal moments in their lives and learning how to share them to connect more authentically with others, to make their presentations and speaking more engaging, to reveal patterns that have kept them stuck or moved them forward, and to improve their relationships at work and at home.   In the spring of 1836, U.S. Army Major General Winfield Scott unleashed his three-prong campaign to subdue Seminole, end the war, and ship the defiant tribe to the Oklahoma territory. The task of erecting a blockhouse and pickets for defense and observation fell to Georgia Volunteer Major, Mark Anthony Cooper. He built his namesake fortification in the Cove of the Withlacoochee River. The square palisade fort included two redoubts and a two-story blockhouse with a 6-pounder cannon mounted in it. The post was used as an observation and dispatch site, a horse depot, a scouting post, a makeshift infirmary, a watering hole – and a safe spot from which Cooper's militiamen could venture outside the main gate to repulse the Seminole siege. Under constant attack for more than two weeks, Major Cooper's command held its defensive position. It turned out to be the longest single continual battle of Scott's 1836 campaign. On March 12 and 13, Fort Cooper State Park holds its annual Fort Cooper Days to commemorate this engagement. The long siege is condensed into a battle spectacle demonstrated twice each weekend day. Living historians – militia and Seminole -- demonstrate their wares and crafts and costumed attires. The park is located near Inverness, Florida. Joining us to recount a bit of the battle and how the park is commemorating it is Jeanne Messersmith. Jeanne is the treasurer for The Friends of Fort Cooper. Write about it!”  We share a love of writing, especially of the most demanding love, poetry. I believe we are all in need of spiritual nutrition, the emotional body-building that comes from community. Especially now, as we are all bound up in viral incarceration, some of us are growing through this imprisonment, some of us less so. Andrew has been in prison for 17 years. Listen in as we explore the path we started with Andrew's insight that the whole world is sitting down.

Andrew Foster, chief investment officer at Seafarer Capital Partners, says that forecasts for China to become the world's largest economy -- surpassing the United States -- are based on overblown economic assumptions. He says China is revising numbers, which will put 'a substantial dampener on growth;' instead of growth rates projected at 6 percent, Foster says to expect economic deceleration that puts 'the point where China surpasses the US more in doubt' or much further out. Also on the show, Cheryl Smith, economist and portfolio manager at Trillium Asset Management, discusses how the pandemic helped to prove a number of key economic theories, which should help guide the way to what happens next, and Madhu Chaudhary, investment analyst, talks about the growth potential of Upstart Holdings, an online lending platform firm that uses artificial intelligence rather than classic credit scores to determine risk-worthy borrowers.

I get frustrated that something like Willie Jackson talking with gangs is such a political problem. He's not giving them money, he's not preventing arrests, he's just talking to them. When did we develop such an objection to people talking to each other?Isn't half the complaint that all these people in power sit in Wellington all day long and never actually get out and understand the issues that they're dealing with? You can't complain about that and then attack Willie Jackson or Marama Davidson or Paul Hunt the Human Rights Commissioner for talking to gangs to understand the issues.Having said that, what I think and what the vast majority of the public think is not always the same thing. And so, if I was in the media team in the beehive, I'd be calling Willie Jackson up and telling him "that's the last time you meet with anyone wearing a patch".That's because this Labour government is locking in the public perception that it is soft on gangs.Willie's meeting the gangs. Marama - their mate in the Greens - is meeting the gangs.Stuart Nash is pretending there's no gang problem in Hawke's Bay when there clearly is a massive gang problem in Hawke's Bay.Andrew Foster, their choice for top cop, is policing by consent nowadays and there's a sense that includes being a bit soft on the gangs. And then no one is doing anything to avoid the nonstop flow of 501 deportees from arriving here and joining up to the nearest gang. The headlines of gang members shooting each other in the Sofitel, and someone firing a gun in a viaduct bar in Auckland, and gang members shutting down a school for a two day tangi, and gang members on bikes taking over roads – that's all feeding that narrative. The public is rightly getting increasingly frustrated about a growing gang problem, and the impact on their towns. And that's not helped by Ministers of the Crown meeting with gang members. So forget the nuance or explaining this away - just stop meeting with them.Gang members can be talked to, but not by a minister in a Government already perceived as being soft on gangs.

Living historians and the public have a blast at battle reenactments. Photo by Andrew Foster Who oversees custodial care for Seminole Wars battlefields? For years, it has been hard to even determine where some battlefields were. Florida's landscape has changed much in 180 years or so, some nature's doing, some not. In Jupiter, concerned citizens banded together to care for two battlefields near them. They formed the Loxahatchee Battlefield Preservationists. The LBP protects and safeguards the Loxahatchee River Battlefield Park, along with the 6,000-year-old prehistoric Native American occupation area contained therein.  Joining us today to discuss the LBP’s efforts, the park, and to provide an overview of these battles is the vice president of the LBP, Andrew Foster. He also has taken many exceptional photographs of the living history events. Many of those photos have helped illustrate these podcast episodes.
