Diverse Voices Book Review host Hopeton Hay interviewed Johnny Lorenz, translator of the Brazilian novel THE FRONT by Edimilson de Almeida Pereira. In the interview, Lorenz said he was inspired to translate more of the literary work of writers of color to speak to the moment after the rise of Black Lives Matter protests against the murder of George Floyd.About Johnny Lorenz:Johnny Lorenz is a poet, translator, and scholar, and a professor of English at Montclair State University.

“O piano chama a alma à tona, toca a alma do texto e do público.

A bossa nova influenciou músicos no mundo inteiro.

My affection for Clarice is immense. The Hour of the Star was the first book I read of hers, and life wasn't the same after that. I rarely read out loud, and what better than to have the chance to do so with what she herself chose and included in this book. I think there's something special, unique, and magical about her writing: it's always full of a comforting freshness (almost the same as when you read for the first time). How did you record yourself? With my computer's microphone, in the living room of my studio, around midday on a Tuesday in July 2025. Even with a bit of distance between my window and the street, some noises still sneaked in.

For episode 88 of the Podcast for Social Research, BISR's Rebecca Ariel Porte welcomed special guests—translator Katrina Dodson and songwriter and vocalist Lacy Rose—for an evening of reading, musical performance, and conversation honoring the enduring legacy of Brazilian writer Clarice Lispector. Occasioned by the release of Rose's concept album Lispector, featuring the Starling Quartet, and Dodson's Covert Joy, a selection of her translations of Lispector's short stories, the three intersperse between reading and performance a discussion of Lispector's work and the passionate attachments it inspires. What makes Lispector such a touchstone? What are the challenges of adapting her work to another language and another medium? What does it mean to find one's own idiom through the work of another? Escuchar audio

Welcome to our 32nd episode in the monthly book discussion series hosted by Marisa Serafini (@serafinitv) and myself, Phil Svitek. If books are your passion, you've come to the right place! In this episode, we delve into Near To the Wild Heart which is a novel by Clarice Lispector. Near to the Wild Heart (Perto do coração selvagem) is Clarice's debut novel, written from March to November 1942 and published around her twenty-third birthday in December 1943. The novel, written in a stream-of-consciousness style reminiscent of the English-language Modernists, centers on the childhood and early adulthood of a character named Joana, who bears strong resemblance to her author: "Madame Bovary, c'est moi", Lispector said, quoting Gustave Flaubert, when asked about the similarities. The book, particularly its revolutionary language, brought its young, unknown creator to great prominence in Brazilian letters and earned her the prestigious Graça Aranha Prize. Join the conversation! Share your thoughts, queries, and viewpoints in the comments or connect with Marisa (@serafinitv) and me on social media. In our upcoming discussion, we'll explore Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire.

Sofia Samatar speaks with Kate Wolf about her new book Opacities: On Writing and the Writing Life. Opacities is addressed to a fellow writer, Samatar's close friend Kate Zambreno, and considers both the process of composing a book—the wellspring of inspiration, wishes and anxieties that accompany it— as well as the distance between a work and its author. Samatar explores how to stay alive as a writer through things such as community, extensive reading, and research alongside the dissonant ways writers are often asked to codify their identities and constantly promote themselves. Drawing on the words of writers like Eduard Glissant, Maurice Blanchot, Clarice Lispector, and Theresa Hak Kyung Cha, Opacities is at heart a book about the furnace of creativity, and the fuel that keeps it burning despite its many trials, risks, and disappointments. Also, Eugene Lim, author of Fog and Car, returns to recommend Too Loud a Solitude by Bohumil Hrabal.

Tommy Orange on His "There There" Sequel

The Book Review

Tommy Orange's acclaimed debut novel, “There There” — one of the Book Review's 10 Best Books of 2018 — centered on a group of characters who all converge on an Indigenous powwow in modern-day Oakland, Calif. His follow-up, “Wandering Stars,” is both a prequel and a sequel to that book, focusing specifically on the character Orvil Red Feather and tracing several generations of his family through the decades before and after the events of “There There.” This week, Orange visits the podcast to discuss “Wandering Stars” as well as the book he has read most in his life, Clarice Lispector's "The Hour of the Star." Orange explained how he decided to write a historical novel while sticking with the characters and story line from his earlier book.“I got drawn in by this part of history because it was so specific to my tribe,” Orange says. “I don't necessarily love reading historical fiction, but if it's driven from the interior and it's character driven, it's compelling to me. So figuring out the types of humans they might have been or things they might have thought or felt, that was a way for me to try to figure out how to make them real. and that's sometimes on a sentence level and sometimes on a, like, what are their motivations or what are they doing in their day-to-day lives? What do they want?”
