From about 1910 to 1912, an alarming number of axe murders were occurring across the American South and Southwest. Though many would speculate as to the identity of perpetrator, including the theory that a single individual was responsible, many of these murders would remain unsolved and contribute to macabre urban legends that endure to this day. In New Orleans, however, the brutal axe murders of at least five Black families in 1911 and 1912 are attributed to Clementine Barnabet, an African American teenager who confessed to the crimes.Despite having confessed to as many as thirty-five murders, and having been convicted and incarcerated for one, the veracity of Barnabet's claim has long been in doubt. Tried and convicted on very little evidence, Barnabet's story changed many times following her arrest and eventually came to include sensational and highly questionable claims of her belonging to a Voodoo religious sect that engaged in human sacrifice. Not only were these claims unsupported by any real evidence, but they also suggested the girl may have been suffering from profound mental illness and had nothing whatsoever to do with the murders in and around New Orleans. But if Clementine Barnabet wasn't the killer, why did she confess to such brutal, wicked crimes?Thank you to the incredible Dave White or Bring Me the Axe Podcast for research!ReferencesCrowley Daily Signal. 1911. In the early 1900's, a series of axe murders tormented a small, African American community in Lafayette, Louisiana. And they weren't the only ones. This week, Hannah tells special guest co-host, Jarek, the strange story of Clementine Barnabet, and the horrendous slayings that took place around her. This story is as confusing as it is intriguing, with sacrificial cults, wild accusations, false confessions, and (as always) shoddy police work. Grab your drinks, and maybe take notes to keep things straight, and join us for this Unsolved Mystery. Sources: https://countryroadsmagazine.com/art-and-culture/history/clementine-barnabet/https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clementine_Barnabethttps://hrwg1991.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/proceedings_2012.pdf#page=33https://the-line-up.com/clementine-barnabetSupport the showFollow us @thetaleswetellpodcast on Facebook and Instagram, or thetaleswetellpodcast.comSupport us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/join/thetaleswetellpodcast?Click here for merch!

April 5th: Clementine Barnabet Confesses (1912) In the early 20th century something strange was happening in the United States. Ax murders, ones like those of the Servant Girl Annihilator and the Axeman of New Orleans, were taking place all in the same pockets of the country and with little to no information pointing to a killer's identity. On April 5th 1912 a young woman confessed to her involvement in a handful of these mysterious ax murders. A woman whose life, race, and upbringing became the catalyst for crimes that, to this day, we don't know if she actually committed.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clementine_Barnabet, https://www.mentalfloss.com/article/502014/voodoo-murders-clementine-barnabet-who-claimed-have-killed-35-people, https://973thedawg.com/serial-axe-murderer-clementine-barnabet-video/, https://the-line-up.com/clementine-barnabet, https://acadianahistorical.org/items/show/73, https://www.grunge.com/705208/this-is-how-many-victims-clementine-barnabet-actually-had/, https://www.grunge.com/365510/what-you-didnt-know-about-serial-killer-clementine-barnabet/

This goes well with this month's theme however and we think you'll enjoy it! Willow does a great job reading between the lines on this case! The murders of entire families on farms that were close to railroad tracks gripped the nation in fear in 1912. The police eventually settled on seventeen year old Clementine Barnabet and her father as suspects, accusing them of being in a Voodoo cult. Clementine (likely under duress) confessed to 35 murders. A string of murders between 1911 and 1912 created a culture of fear and chaos in Louisiana. Investigators thought they had their man. He didn't put up much of a fight during his own trial and even his own family testified against him. It turns out, he wasn't actually responsible for murdering all of those african american families with an axe, but someone close to him was trying to make sure he took the fall… in the name of the church. It was originally released On Halloween Day, 2020! The horror continues in Blurry Photober with a mega episode about the Barnabet axe murders. Flora is joined by authors Alan Gauthreaux and Dr. Daryl Hippensteel as well as numerous Louisianans to explore the ghastly tale of the Barnabet axe murders. Southwestern Louisiana was terrorized in 1911-12 by brutal axe murders. One young woman was pinned with not only perpetrating them, but possibly masterminding more. Hoodoo and Voodoo were found to be involved, which the media picked up at the time and ran with. Hear the shocking story and how it ended, told via news articles and criminal justice perspectives. Cloudy Conclusions with CinderRello

This week we will be diving into the case of Clementine Barnabet, the first African American serial killer. Though she was only convicted of one slaying, she claimed to have brought an end to almost 35 lives. Even in the early 1900's this case caused a news frenzy, from the notoriety of her being a Black murderess to the mention of strange voodoo practices. After reading and preparing for this case, my conclusion may be a little cloudy. Clementine Barnabet is believed to have been born around 1894 in St. Martinville, Louisiana and moved to Lafayette in 1909. In Proceedings of the 2012 Homicide Research Working Group Annual Symposium, Professor Vance McLaughlin wrote: "Between 1911 and 1912, in towns along the Southern Pacific railroad line running through Louisiana and Texas, a minimum of twelve African-American families were murdered in their homes. All the murders occurred at night and an ax was used to fracture the skulls of the victims. Only one person, Clementine Barnabet, was ever punished for any of these homicides." So while this story seems to be wrapped up in a neat little bow, all may not be what it seems… join us this week for Voodoo, murders, and a church twisted by the media… Stay safe out there. The self proclaimed Voodoo Priestess of the Sacrifice Sect, 17-year-old Clementine Barnabet just might have been the first African American serial killer. Clementine confessed to a totally out-of-this-world story that included taking responsibility for at least 17 murders. But did she really kill all those people?  Or could she have been innocent? Put down your axe, kick back and noodle on this string of brutal murders that plagued towns among a railroad connecting southern Louisiana with Texas.   We dig up Clementine's past, debate her innocence, and offer up some alternate theories of her crimes.

And now, so many decades later, authorities are still at a loss as to who committed the murder. (It Was Just An Ordinary Day) *** What does it feel like to die? We obviously won't know personally until we die ourselves, as it's hard to talk to someone about their experience of dying if they are… well… dead. But Reverend J.T. Mann can describe it – as he was hanged… died… and then came back to life to tell the story of what happened to his soul while he was gone. (He Was Hanged As a Spy But Came Back to Life) *** The Wendigo is terrifying enough – with its backstory claiming it is the creation of a person who chose to become a cannibal, and ended up twisting up into the legendary monster. But that's just it – so far, it's only just a legend. We have no solid proof of its existence. But even more horrifying than the Wendigo is Wendigo Psychosis – something that is not a legend at all. (Wendigo Psychosis) *** We'll look at a few other legendary creatures and cryptids that have some interesting stories attached to them! Gruesome as they were, they began to horrify the public even more when they were admitted to by a teenaged voodoo priestess. Despite her confession though, a pair of authors say that there was someone else in the area at the time even more dangerous and who likely did most of the killing unbeknownst to even the voodoo priestess.
