Once again, we recorded this episode a while back (a number of months ago, in this case) but due to the lamentable state of many things in the US, our episode this week feels eerily timely. For our first Noirvember Substantive Cinema epsiode of 2024, we are looking at one of Samuel Fuller's most celebrated and highly regarded films, Shock Corridor. In the movie, Johnny Barrett, a journalist in pursuit of fame and acclaim, poses as a lunatic in order to infiltrate a mental institution where a murder has taken place. Can he keep his sanity long enough to solve the case and what will be left of him if he can? In our discussion we cover: how Sam Fuller bluntly portrays America's various psychoses (nationalism, racial hatred, and the worship of violent power) in the three eyewitnesses that Johnny needs to interrogate, the legacy of Fuller's work in filmmakers like Martin Scorsese, David Lynch, Spike Lee, and Jim Jarmusch, the role of journalism in a free society, and more! Watch Shock Corridor on the Internet Archive Listen to Mike, Spencer, and I talk about The Naked Kiss, Fuller's follow up to Shock Corridor which also stars Constance Towers. Chicago-based academic and horror obsessive Peter Raleigh joins to discuss reliable journeyman director Peter Hyams and his 1997 creature feature, 'The Relic'. Maligned critically and a failure at the box office upon its initial release, the film has endured as an example of the tactile, sturdy genre work of the 90s with capable hands on both sides of the camera, including brilliant creature designs from legendary special effects guru Stan Winston. We discuss the film's impressive balancing act, managing to glide over a host ludicrous genre tropes and plot holes with ease while maintining a keen pacing and immersion. Then, we praise the excellent directorial work of Hyams, who serves here as his own cinematographer and generates a mesmerizing, impressionistic array of horror imagery in stark, dimly lit spaces galore. Finally, we discuss the delights of the monster movie, its flattening of distinctions among people that make for compelling survival thrills, and why the sensibilities of the decade were uniquely attuned to the subgenre. Special guest Justin Wiese of Torn Light Records and the Esquire Theatre in Cincinnati joins us as we go DARK AF. We begin with the inescapable fatalism of director Edgar Ulmer's film noir classic DETOUR from 1945 where Tom Neal as sadsack Al Roberts is thrust into a tragedy of errors as he thumbs a ride across the country. Just when things couldn't get any worse, they do when he hooks up with Ann Savage as Vera, the venom-spitting queen cobra of all film noir. Savage more than lives up to her surname with an intense performance that has our panel of potheads leaning sativa just to keep up with her. Then we go a little Neo-noir but still black and white with two-fisted auteur Sam Fuller's shocking gut punch, The Naked Kiss (1964 with Constance Towers as a vengeful ex-hooker who tries to go straight in a small town only to find that polite society is way more twisted than the sleaziest brothel. This one comes with some haunting dream sequences punctuated by bursts of brutal violence capped off with a message that makes Greg Franklin categorize this as "wokesploitation." Hosts: Bob Calhoun, Cory Sklar, Philena Franklin + the epic return of Greg Franklin of Six Point Harness Studios, who had been away on assignment. Guest starring Justin Wiese. Detour is streaming without ads on Kanopy and Criterion Channel and free with ads on tubi, Roku Channel, and Pluto + there's a blasphemous colorized version on Prime. This week we're watching Shock Corridor, Sam Fuller's 1963 tale of a so-so journalist's ill-advised plan to get a Pulitzer.  It's not as good a movie as his next one, The Naked Kiss, which we watched last week, mostly due to Constance Towers being featured less prominently and in a much more subdued (in a lot of senses) way. We posit that The Naked Kiss is an apology for how she gets treated in this movie.  Anyway, still enjoyable pulpy goodness.

Ever pressing on, we recover from Salo and move on to Sam Fuller's 1964 neo-noir The Naked Kiss, kicking off a duo of back to back Fuller. It's lively and pulpy and fun, due mostly to Constance Towers being a far better actress and Fuller a far better director than this script probably deserves, though Fuller did write it himself. So hopefully our joy in The Naked Kiss isn't just a direct result of having watched Salo directly before.

After two years of trying to snag an interview, it has finally come to where we can safely say finally that Nancy Lee Grahn makes her very first appearance on BuzzWorthy Radio this week. Nancy Lee Grahn currently plays the role of Alexis Davis on ABC Daytime's General Hospital. She first got her start in daytime television on One Life to Live playing Beverly Wilkes. After moving to Los Angeles in 1982, she had guest starring roles in hit primetime shows such as Magnum, PI and Murder, She Wrote. It wasn't until 1985 that we would undeniably fall in love with a new role. Nancy was cast as Julia Wainwright on the former NBC soap opera, Santa Barbara. Though initially, Julia and Mason Capwell, played by Lane Davies, sparred, it wouldn't be long before they had a connection that fans began to love. In 1989, she was received a Daytime Emmy Award for her performance as Julia, with Soap Digest and Soap Opera Update awards soon to follow. In 1996, Nancy came to General Hospital as Alexis Davis, a role that she continues to play to this day. She has endured a lot of trials and tribulations since her arrival in Port Charles. Killing a mad man, her daughter having an affair with her husband, cancer, and now dealing with the mob yet again, we sometimes forget that she is a Cassadine....and her feud with Helena, played by Constance Towers, was a great rivalry that has yet to resurface.
