From Rob Lowe's infamous duet with Snow White to the awkwardly swaying stars, dancing tables, and endless backdrops culminating in a bus-sized model of Grauman's Chinese Theatre mounted on Snow White's head, Alan Carr's disastrous production has left a legacy that made the Oscars what it is today, and I'm going to tell you all about it!We give you the Compendium, but if you want more, then check out these great resources:“Eileen Bowman interview”: Hollywood Reporter“The Full 1989 Oscars Opening Number”: Youtube“The Stars of Tomorrow 1989 Oscars Number”: YoutubeConnect with Us:
The Rocketeer is a 1991 film set in the late 1930s that follows the story of Cliff Seacord, a stunt pilot who becomes a superhero known as the Rocketeer. The movie was initially released as a Disney film but later changed to Touchstone due to its uncertain target audience. The film has pacing issues and struggled to find its audience, but has gained a cult following in recent years. The cast includes Billy Campbell as Cliff, Jennifer Connelly as Jenny, and Timothy Dalton as the villain Neville Sinclair. The movie draws on real rumors and Hollywood history, incorporating elements like Howard Hughes and Errol Flynn. It also features nods to Betty Page and the Zeppelin. Overall, The Rocketeer is a nostalgic and visually appealing film that blends adventure, romance, and superhero elements. The conversation covers various topics including the iconic Ennis House, the difference between steampunk and diesel punk and production rumors. As a hardcore Swiftie, I was elated when I found out that Taylor Swift had a new song named after Clara Bow, and I thought, what better time to help people who may not know her story get to know her better? Clara was born desperately poor in early 1900s New York and suffered from a bad home life with an alcoholic father and a mentally ill mother. However, by the time she was a teenager, she won a beauty contest that shot her into stardom. Her fame came with a price, and she had her life intruded on by paparazzi; she was exploited by her managers and suffered from her own mental health issues. Come join me on today's episode to learn about the women who coined the term IT girl. Bibliography The Clara Bow Page. “Biography,” June 30, 2019. https://www.clarabow.net/biography/biography.html. EPISODE 24 - “The Hollywood Studio Club: Where The Good Girls Lived” - 02/26/2024 During the early days of Hollywood, hordes of young women pilgrimaged West to try to break into the movie business. And like sheep to slaughter, there were just as many men in Hollywood ready to take advantage of these young, inexperienced, and vulnerable young women. However, the Hollywood Studio Club, a hotel for women, run by women, tried to give these women a safe haven in the storm. Started by a librarian and nurtured by movie star MARY PICKFORD, among others, this hotel provided a safe place to live and helped nurture the budding careers of future Hollywood Stars such as MAUREEN O”SULLIVAN, LINDA DARNELL, DOROTHY MALONE, DONNA REED, KIM NOVAK, MARILYN MONROE and SHARON TATE. From Gutenberg to Frankenstein to the Luddites to Edison to Ford and to AI - this is our story of fearing human creations, and also our story of embracing the next and newest technology. Dr. Robert Friedel of the University of Maryland rejects the generally accepted definition of "disruptive technologies" and explains how major innovations changed human history: from Gutdenberg's movable type printing press to artificial intelligence. In this episode, we uncover the history behind the following: How to Define Technology as Disruptive Gutenberg's Printing Press – How It Changed Everything! Electric Lighting How from the Middle of the 19th Century, people's expectations changed - they began to expect technological changes. The Luddites, who lost jobs to new technology and broke machines in protest. How human culture changed from fear of new technologies to a culture of improvement. From Frankenstein to Artificial Intelligence. How Good Technologies Become Bad Dr. Friedel is a professor in the Department of History at the University of Maryland. Prior to UMD, he was a historian at the Smithsonian Institution and at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. His research expertise is in technology, science, and environment. He has written several books on the history of technology, focusing largely on the nature of invention. His latest book is a wide-ranging survey of Western Technology since the Middle Ages, and it's titled - A Culture of Improvement; Technology and the Western Millennium. Artificial Intelligence Threatens Hollywood Jobs This summer, actors and writers in the movie industry went on a massive strike because of their grievances about their compensation, the royalties they receive, and the use of AI – artificial intelligence. As my podcast guest, Dr. Thomas Doherty explained, this recent strike is similar to the 1960 strike, in that in the 1950s - the years leading up to the big 1960 strike, technology changed everything. Back then, that new technology was TV. The technology that is threatening Hollywood jobs now is streaming and artificial intelligence. Prof. Doherty explains how the situation in this strike is much more dire than the one back in 1960. In the past, the new TV technology threatened Hollywood jobs and incomes. With artificial intelligence, however, the studios not only could potentially supplant writers, but they also own the actors' likeness. What that means is that with AI you don't just lose your job, you lose yourself! Hollywood History podcast: https://bit.ly/HbN-S3E29s. I hope you enjoy these episodes. This week, we're sharing an episode of The Redemption of Jar Jar Binks, a new podcast from the TED Audio Collective. It's a six-part series that reckons with one of the most divisive characters in cinematic history, the online hatred he inspired, and what we can learn from it today. In this episode, host Dylan Marron goes beyond the fandom backlash and goes into some of the deeper questions about the character. Why did many see Jar Jar as a racial stereotype? What does that say about Jar Jar's place in the world of Star Wars and Hollywood history overall? And how did all of the frenzy affect the actor who brought the character to life? If you'd like to hear the rest of the series, follow The Redemption of Jar Jar Binks wherever you get your podcasts. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

On December 31st, 2021, Hollywood legend and literally the most well-liked living person in America at one point, Betty White, passed away in her home in Brentwood, California. Even though she was 99 years old, it still felt like she was taken too soon. She was still so very much alive and looking forward to celebrating her 100th birthday in a little over two weeks. Most now seem to remember her from The Golden Girls, or The Mary Tyler Moore Show, or Hot in Cleveland. Or maybe that 2010 Snickers Super Bowl commercial. But by the time The Mary Tyler Moore Show debuted in 1970, she had already been regularly appearing on TV for over twenty years. She'd starred in and produced one of America's very first sitcoms - Life With Elizabeth - in the early 1950's. She'd had her own variety show, The Betty White Show. She'd starred in other sitcoms, and was a regular guest on dozens of games shows, late night talk shows, variety shows, etc. She's starred in movies. And she had an amazing life outside of entertainment. Her love story with third husband Allen Ludden reads like a movie script, but it was very real. Such an inspiring show today! I hope it makes you feel as good hearing it as it did for me when I recorded it. Hail Nimrod, everyone!
