Happy Valentine's Day from The B-Side! Here we talk about movie directors! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between. Today we appreciate one of the great, under-appreciated Hollywood directors: Peter Hyams! Our B-Sides include Peeper, Hanover Street, The Star Chamber, 2010: The Year We Make Contact, and Running Scared. Our guest is Mike Ryan, great writer, interviewer, and deep fan of Hyams' eclectic body of work. Sudden Death is a favorite, along with 2010. We discuss the auteur versus the “workman director,” why some filmmakers gather an intense following and others don't, and the lasting effect many of Hyams' films have had on the culture as well as other filmmakers. There's much talk about Hyams' ability as a cinematographer, and how rare it is to be a director that films their own movies.  Mike makes the case that 2010 is more watchable than 2001: A Space Odyssey, Conor attempts to get over how corrupt Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines are as cops in Running Scared, and Dan sings the praises of Hyams' Narrow Margin. There's extended conversation about Robert Blake, co-star of Hyams' debut Busting, an appreciation of director John Badham (specifically Blue Thunder), and a reflection on the enormity of the production of End of Days.

The film writer Brandon Streussnig (Vulture, Fangoria, GQ) joins the pod for a discussion about the undersung director Peter Hyams through four of his science fiction movies across a career full of genre work, films that reveal a singular style can be applied to a craftsman, a former Chicago newsman turned director who also (controversially for his industry) served as his own cinematographer. His all-star conspiracy theory thriller Capricorn One (1977) established Hyams as a filmmaker who could fuse suspense and science-fiction. He would follow this with 1981's Outland, a hybrid of Alien and High Noon starring Sean Connery, criticized at the time for being derivative but which rips when seen today, a dystopic vision of a future world ravaged by capitalism on steroids that actually anticipated the themes and production design of Ridley Scott's Blade Runner the following year. Brandon and I make the case for 2010, Hyams' 1984 sequel to Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey, as a worthy followup if not an essential work, offering a hopeful and utopic vision of man's future contrasted against Kubrick's colder take. Set against the topical US/Soviet arms race of the Reagan era and packed with thrills, it's a much better film than you've been led to believe. And of course there's Timecop, the biggest hit Jean-Claude Van Damme ever had. This episode means to introduce you to the work of Peter Hyams, solid entertainments across many genres and ripe for rediscovery. linktr.ee/CatchingUpOnCinema This week on Catching Up On Cinema, Kyle and Trevor review Peter Hyams', Timecop (1994)! A time travel action thriller from director Peter Hyams, Timecop (1994) is often thought of as Jean-Claude Van Damme's most profitable film, released in what would go on to be a very successful year for “The Muscles from Brussels”. Produced by Sam Raimi and Dark Horse Entertainment, Timecop is an oddly tepid action film, lacking the flair or dynamism of many of its contemporaries. While the performances and dialogue are on point, executed and delivered with aplomb by a very capable cast of familiar faces and character actors, Van Damme himself often comes across as slightly checked out. While director/cinematographer Hyams' signature stark production design and murky black lighting schemes are of a high degree of craftsmanship, in some ways they hamper the tone, forcing the film to be perhaps more serious than it ought to be. Featuring some nifty CGI effects work for its vintage,Timecop generally has a high degree of polish in its presentation, however much of the action feels weightless and low stakes, with very few action beats being worthy of Van Damme's highlight reel. A middling JCVD film that likely earned its box office success through riding the 90's wave of sci-fi “techno thrillers”, and the promise of its star's muscular buttocks being featured prominently as co-star. Chicago-based academic and horror obsessive Peter Raleigh joins to discuss reliable journeyman director Peter Hyams and his 1997 creature feature, 'The Relic'. Maligned critically and a failure at the box office upon its initial release, the film has endured as an example of the tactile, sturdy genre work of the 90s with capable hands on both sides of the camera, including brilliant creature designs from legendary special effects guru Stan Winston. We discuss the film's impressive balancing act, managing to glide over a host ludicrous genre tropes and plot holes with ease while maintining a keen pacing and immersion. Then, we praise the excellent directorial work of Hyams, who serves here as his own cinematographer and generates a mesmerizing, impressionistic array of horror imagery in stark, dimly lit spaces galore. Finally, we discuss the delights of the monster movie, its flattening of distinctions among people that make for compelling survival thrills, and why the sensibilities of the decade were uniquely attuned to the subgenre. In this week's episode, Chris sits down with Elizabeth Hinton. Elizabeth is an American historian and associate professor of History and African American Studies at Yale University, as well as a Professor of Law at Yale Law School. Her research focuses on the persistence of poverty and racial inequality in the twentieth-century United States. Hinton's book “From the War on Poverty to the War on Crime: The Making of Mass Incarceration in America” traces the rise of mass incarceration to an ironic source: the social welfare programs of Lyndon Johnson's Great Society at the height of the civil rights era. There are 80 million people in the US, or 1 in 3 Americans, that have an arrest or conviction record. Mass incarceration prevents these millions of people from fully participating in society when released. Hinton and Hyams will discuss how we got to this point in America, how the lack of job opportunities contribute to the cycle of police violence and social unrest and what policy recommendations are needed to break this cycle.

Today, we are setting our sights on the cosmos with the intriguingly futuristic film, "2010: The Year We Made Contact".As the sequel to Stanley Kubrick's pioneering "2001: A Space Odyssey", this 1984 sci-fi thriller directed by Peter Hyams carries the torch forward, exploring humanity's relationship with the unknown. The narrative picks up nine years after the disastrous voyage of Discovery One, as a joint Soviet-American team embarks on a mission to unravel the enigma of the malfunctioning HAL and the monolith in Jupiter's orbit. We'll discuss Roy Scheider's portrayal of Dr. Heywood Floyd, burdened by the guilt of the doomed first mission, and his interactions with the equally compelling performances of Helen Mirren and John Lithgow. We'll explore the subtle shifts in the film's thematic approach, moving from Kubrick's philosophical musings to Hyams' focus on geopolitical tensions and humanistic themes. We delve into the stunning special effects that make "2010: The Year We Made Contact" a visual treat, the clever intertwining of Arthur C. Clarke's source material, and how the film, despite being steeped in Cold War anxieties, still resonates in today's context. So gear up for a cosmic journey as we unravel the mysteries of "2010: The Year We Made Contact". It's time to jump back into the Universal Soldier saga once again, this time looking at the final (and darkest) installment in the franchise! In this wild nightmarish sequel, Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren return once again, this time joining forces (!) and taking a backseat to martial arts sensation, Scott Adkins! Adkins stars as John, a family man who finds himself in the middle of a power struggle between an army of rogue Unisols and the government trying to reclaim control of them. John Hyams also returns to the director's chair once again, and this time he brings in a Lynchian element to the Unisol franchise, combined with Apocalypse Now and The Manchurian Candidate!
