Journalist Claire Hoffman unpacks Sister, Sinner, the gripping true crime story of evangelist Aimee Semple McPherson's disappearance and miraculous return. If you've never heard the name, Aimee Semple McPherson, you're not alone—but Claire Hoffman's Sister Sinner will ensure you never forget her name again as America's first mega-preacher.Today, we discuss this riveting biography, which opens with the astonishing true story of Aimee, who shaped modern evangelicalism, vanished into the ocean for 35 days, and returned with a kidnapping tale so wild it led to two sensational trials. The author was the first researcher granted access to the complete court records of Aimee's grand jury trial—records that, for more than a century, the Foursquare Church has refused to share with the outside world.Uncover her journalistic approach, which is both deeply researched and refreshingly secular. Embracing Aimee's contradictions—faith healer and showman, sinner and saint, feminist and fundamentalist creates a page-turning experience. Whether religious or not, you'll love this conversation on how charisma, celebrity, and faith collide. In this intimate and insightful conversation, Claire and I discuss:Her background and five-year research process to bring Aimee's story to lifeWhy Aimee's disappearance is the opening chapter, and what type of reader did she hope the true crime angle might pull inHow Claire's background as a journalist for Rolling Stone has given her a unique lens into the world of what it means to be a celebrityThe effort and reverence required when accessing court documents like this for a project

(There are a few technical glitches in here. I apologize in advance!) What wounds do you carry around with you? I have scars on my arm from a childhood disease, places where the skin is darker than the rest. For you, it might be a physical scar from an experience that left you scraped and bleeding. Or it might be something deeper: a fear of close relationships, the ever-present sting of betrayal, the feeling like you don't belong. On today's episode I speak with Russell Joyce about how God can use these wounds in our lives to bring both freedom and healing. Russell is the national director of church planting for The Foursquare Church and senior pastor of Faith Center in Eugene, Oregon. He's also the co-host of the Same Jesus podcast. But today I chat with him as the author of his book, His Face Like Mine. The foundational story of the book has to do with the fact that Russell was born with a rare craniofacial disorder where the left side of his face was not formed. And as he works through the scars from that—physical, emotional, and spiritual—he discovers how God meets us in our wounds and sets us free. Russell and I talk about the gift of repentance, how journaling has played a role for him and how it can play a role in your own healing journey, and at the end, he shares some words to those who are walking alongside people who are healing. This is a sacred conversation, my friends. So settle in and ask God what He has to say to you through this episode today. Victorious Spiritual Warfare So Simple Grandma Can Do It – Maureen Broderson pt 2 How many grandmothers out there are interceding for their children and grandchildren? Let's not just leave it grandma's – how many grandfathers are out there interceding, too? Praise God! I'm a grandpa to 7 grandkids – and I pray for them every single day, often multiple times a day! Amen! The reason I ask this question is simple… out guest today is the author of a magnificent book titled, “Victorious Spiritual Warfare – So Simple, Grandma Can Do It!” Amen! I'm telling you folks, I read this book through and, don't tell anyone, but there's stuff in there that will preach…amen! Praise God! Maureen Broderson is the author of this great book and is an ordained minister in the Foursquare Church and serves on the pastoral ministry team at “The Church on the Way” in Van Nuys, California. She is also a Certified John Maxwell Team Coach, speaker, trainer and a Certified Human Behavior Consultant with Personality Insights, Inc. To be honest, sometimes (and more often that most people would admit to), we are “our own worst enemy” when it comes to putting ourself in a situation that allows the enemy to attack us. Have you seen this in your ministry as you help folks identify problems, etc. with Spiritual Warfare? The Bible has many examples of Spiritual Warfare. But you also list “multiple streams of deliverance” as well. Can you share a few examples of this? Yes, Jesus won the Victory. The war has been won. But now we are, basically the mop up crew and the “occupying force” until He returns. The enemy still wants to fight. That is what we are talking about here. Can you share about the “reality of the conflict and God's intention for the role we play in this conflict?” Maureen, this has been so interesting. I just have one more question for you. One that I found so interesting in your book and I just have to have you share this with our audience… Tell us about the “Tuna Salad” story and how that relates to everything we just shared… Folks, as I've stated over and over – this book is AWESOME. Maureen, how can someone obtain a copy of “Victorious Spiritual Warfare – So Simple, Grandma Can Do It?” I take it is on Amazon? If someone wanted to get in touch with you, to ask a question or receive more information or possibly to do an interview such as this – how can they do that? How can someone get in touch with you? I'll put links to all of this in the show notes below. Folks, we may have a little fun with the topics here today… but I want you to realize, Spiritual Warfare is real. 100% real. It is not something to “dabble with” or “have some fun with.” It is life and death. That is not meant to scare you off… absolutely not. It is meant to have you understand the seriousness of the situation. We can see evidence all around us of the magnitude of the spiritual battle taking place. It's all over the news, social media, in the schools, etc. This is not a time to go and hide our heads in the sand. No, it is a time to stand up and fight. It is a time to learn how to fight in the spirit world. It's not just “in the sweet by and by.” We need to deal with the “rotten here and now.”...

I've been looking forward for today ever since she sent me this book. I'm telling you folks, there is some great stuff in here that you will want wrap your spiritual minds around… but more on that in a bit… One person wrote that Maureen, “takes the subject of Spiritual Warfare off the shelves of theology books and onto the coffee table of every believer.” Praise God! Help me welcome to the program, Maureen Broderson! Maureen, it is a blessing to have you join us today! Thank you for taking the time out of your schedule to come on the program today and talk all about your great book and Spiritual Warfare… First question I always start with is this… Other than that brief information I just shared, can you tell is in your own words, “Who is Maureen Broderson?” How long have you been involved with Spiritual Warfare… let me rephrase that… EVERYONE is involved in Spiritual Warfare our entire life… but how long have you been teaching people about how to be victorious in Spiritual Warfare? As you have outlined in your book, Jesus secured the victory for us in Spiritual Warfare at Cavalry. We fight FROM victory, not for victory. But how can someone who may not be as actively involved in ministry and spiritual warfare gain the wisdom to “know how to fight this battle?” In the military, we trained as we would fight. In other words, make the training as tough as we could and as realistic as we could. Then, when the real battle erupts around us, we are going through, basically muscle memory tasks that we know will bring us to a place of victory. How can Christians learn this type of reaction in the Spiritual Warfare realm and gain the experience to “know that you know that you know” what to do in situations that require you to “take a stand” in Spiritual Warfare? I've known a few ministers that, let's just say, “wanted to engage in Spiritual Warfare” and thought they had it all figured out. But, once they engaged in the actual battle – found out they were not as prepared as they thought Being in the military for so long, and then my career in law enforcement, I often found myself in some, let's say interesting situations that...

This episode is a message that Tim gave at Gateway Foursquare Church on November 5, 2023. For more information about Gateway Foursquare visit: https://gatewayfoursquare.ca/Unity is a foundational characteristic of the Church in the New Testament and is a reflection of the very nature of God himself. One of the central themes of Jesus' prayer as recorded by John is that we as his followers would be one, as he and the Father are one (John 17:11,20-23). Scripture is clear that every single person who puts his/her faith in Jesus, instantly becomes part of one Body, by one spirit, serving one Lord. This is a universal, positional reality for every believer (see 1 Corinthians 12:12-13). In other words, unity is not a by-product of our human effort, it is the default position and a defining characteristic of the Church, and is an inward spiritual reality for every believer. For many believers however, the positional reality of the unified Church can be difficult to reconcile with our ground-level experience. So many believers have experienced relational breakdown, jealously, discord, disunity, quarrelling, and church splits! Unity is something that comes under regular, focused attack of our adversary, and his aim is to destroy the fabric of the Church by sowing division and strife. This is why Paul exhorts believers to be eager to maintain the Unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace (Ephesians 4:3). We have an active part to play to maintain unity within the Body of Christ, so that our relational, ground-level experience as believers accurately reflects the universal, eternal reality that there is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, but all are one in Christ Jesus (Galatians 3:28). In this message Tim focuses on several passages of scripture to unpack this topic further, addressing the issue of division in the Church, and unity as a fundamental characteristic of all genuine believers, and one of God's ultimate goals for the Church. Healing Rain Sue Detweiler pt 2 Are you tired of encountering walls of resistance on your path to healing? If you are, know that you are not alone. Many believers face the trenches of despair and sickness, feeling trapped and powerless in their circumstances. Throughout my experiences over the last 30 years and through the stories shared by many people I've interviewed over the last few years on this podcast, I have witnessed the incredible wisdom and life-changing power of divine healing over and over again. I've seen hearts mended, bodies restored, and lives forever transformed by the miraculous touch of Jesus. Divine healing is not a far-fetched concept reserved for a select few; it is a reality available to every believer. The redeeming force of Christ's sacrifice knows no bounds, and through understanding and embracing this truth, you can walk confidently toward complete restoration. To help explain this even further, we are blessed to have as our guest today, Sue Detweiler. Sue is a pioneer woman pastor who began preaching at the age of 19. She and her husband, Wayne, planted and co-pastored their first church at the age of 22. She has a strong prophetic teaching gift, and has equipped men and women to become pastors, evangelists, and missionaries to the nations. She is an in demand international speaker and travels to Central America, South America, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. She is a recognized member of Randy Clark's Global Awakening Network and Apostle Guillermo Maldonado's Supernatural Global Network. She has been recognized with the highest recognition from the president of the Foursquare Church, Jack Hayford, for leading “Life School of Ministry,” a three-year Bible training institute in Nashville. Her latest book is “Healing Rain: Immersing Yourself in Christ's Love to Find Wholeness of Mind, Body, and Heart” – which we will also be discussing today. Amen! Let's shift gears a bit. I want to discuss your book, “Healing Rain.” This inspiration for this book came from your own health crisis while on a trip to Brazil. Can you share about that with us? Why did you believe now is the right time to publish this book? How did the Lord move upon your heart to take on this book project? How many books have you written over the years? You believe every believer should have a “healing team.” Explain what that is and why it is so important? In your book, you have a story about a church in Brazil where the church members had someone praying around the clock, someone every 15 minutes, praying for the pastor's wife and daughter. Can you tell us about that story and why it was included in your book? There is probably someone listening to us right now who is struggling to receive their healing or they know someone who is struggling to receive their healing. What would you say to them right now, in their struggles? Share with us about your podcast, “Healing Rain.” How long have you been podcasting? It's an interview based podcast? This episode is a message that Tim gave on September 10, 2023 at Gateway Foursquare Church in Campbell River BC. Visit https://gatewayfoursquare.ca/thisweek/ For more information about Gateway. Almost every book of the New Testament mentions suffering, hardships and persecution that believers face. It is talked about by Jesus early in the gospels during the sermon on the mount, and is mentioned throughout the New Testament as something that is guaranteed for those who follow Jesus. Paul exhorted Timothy saying “indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted” (2 Timothy 3:12). For us in North America, this can often feel like a foreign concept - something that happens far away in other countries. For the past 200-300 years, until recently, North-American and Western culture was defined in part by over-arching, biblical core-values. There was a time when the Lord's Prayer was recited in schools. People who weren't necessarily devout followers of Jesus, would often attend Church on Christmas and Easter, and it was generally considered a good thing to be a church-going, God-fearing Christian. In recent decades however, our culture has made a radical shift away from over-arching Christian values, and has become far more secular. For this reason, it is likely going to become increasingly difficult and costly to be a follower of Christ in the coming decades. In this message, we are reminded that Christians are guaranteed to face persecution and hardships. It is in these moments, that God tests us to bring forth maturity and genuine faith, proven to be of more worth than gold. Furthermore, Jesus actually requires us to understand that the Kingdom of God is the most value thing we could obtain, and we are to consider the high cost of being his disciple.

This episode is a message that Tim gave on August 13, 2023 at Gateway Foursquare Church in Campbell River BC. Visit https://gatewayfoursquare.ca/ for more info.As followers of Jesus, we are called to imitate Jesus, follow his example and become more and more like him. When Jesus came, he came as fully God, and yet he was also fully man. He fully embraced the human experience to demonstrate what it looks like to live in perfect relationship with God. Part of the significance of this is that Jesus did not do his works out of his own divine attributes or power- he did his works as a man empowered by the Holy Spirit for ministry. Further to this, Jesus makes a wild statement to his disciples in John 14:12. He says “Truly, truly I say to you anyone who believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father.” Let that sink in for a minute. Jesus invites us to do the same works he did, and greater!… How is this possible? Why does this not feel true in our experience? What did Jesus mean by this? Tune in as we explore the incredible example of Jesus' life, and the unimaginable invitation he gives to his followers to continue in his works, and even greater works than these.

This is part two of Tim speaking on Sunday June 11, 2023 at Gateway Foursquare Church on the topic of Healing in the New Testament. In the previous message, Tim looked more broadly at the over-arching theme of God's willingness to heal, and the provision he made for healing in the cross of Calvary. This episode is a little longer than usual, and consists of two parts. For the first 50 minutes, Tim continues teaching on healing in the New Testament, focusing more on how healing ministry happens in the Church and asking questions like: What is the purpose of healing ministry? Who should pray for healing? How do we pray for healing? And what should we expect to happen? After the teaching, the episode transitions to an actual healing ministry service that took place following the message. Tim included this part of the service as a practical example for those who wish to explore further how this ministry can happen in a congregational setting. The healing service lasts for just under an hour, so feel absolutely free to tune out after the teaching if you wish.Enjoy this episode as we dive deeper into the topic of Healing in the New Testament. -Tim
On June 11, 2023 Tim was invited to speak at Gateway Foursquare Church on the topic of healing. In this episode, Tim takes a broad look into scripture at the overarching theme of God's nature and character as a life-giving God who desires healing and freedom for his people. In a very general, over-arching sense - God is willing to heal - so much so that it's something he accomplished on the cross and guarantees as a reality for every believer at the end of the age. The more difficult, pressing question is: what about now? Is this something we can expect now? Is it guaranteed? What do we do with experiences where healing doesn't happen and how do we reconcile this with the overarching theme in scripture of God's nature as a life-giving God who desires freedom and healing for us?Tune in to this message which explores the very important, foundational theme of any healing ministry: that God is willing to heal.

Get ready to explore the transformative power of Christ's healing. In this episode of Flourish-Meant, host Tina Yeager engages in a captivating conversation with Sue Detweiler, renowned speaker, podcast host, and author of "Healing Rain." Sue Detweiler is an inspirational author, prophetic speaker, and host of the Healing Rain podcast listened to in 135 nations. She is a recognized member of Randy Clark's Global Awakening Network and Apostle Guillermo Maldonado's Supernatural Global Network. Sue also received the highest recognition from the president of the Foursquare Church, Jack Hayford, for leading Life School of Ministry, a three-year Bible training institute in Nashville that grew to five hundred students. She earned a Master of Divinity from Vanderbilt University and is pursuing a doctorate with Global Awakening Theological Seminary. Sue Detweiler began preaching at the age of 19. With her husband, Wayne, she planted and co-pastored their first church at the age of 22. With a strong prophetic teaching gift, Sue has equipped men and women to become pastors, evangelists, and missionaries to the nations. She is an international speaker and travels to Central America, South America, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. Sue shares profound insights and personal experiences that will leave you inspired and equipped to embark on your own healing journey. Throughout the discussion, Sue emphasizes the importance of exploring spiritual solutions when facing chronic illness. She compassionately reminds us that being sick is not our fault and that physical symptoms can be real and medically verifiable. Sue sheds light on the impact of isolation from the community of God and constant negative thoughts, which can manifest as demonization. Believing that inner healing, deliverance, and physical healing often go hand in hand, Sue unveils unforgiveness as a doorway for the enemy. Drawing from her own triumph over childhood abuse and a spirit of rejection, Sue showcases the power of Jesus as the ultimate healer who can bring freedom from negative realities. Sue's deep love and admiration for God's healing abilities shine through as she addresses prevalent unbelief and its manifestation as doubt in the truth of God's word. While acknowledging the fallen world we live in, Sue encourages us to consider that healing may not always be 100% successful on Earth but can occur in heaven. Recognizing the connection between our mindset and our physical well-being, Sue explores the significance of replacing a victim mentality with a victor mentality. She invites us to focus on the word of God and magnify the truth that Jesus is the healer, thereby shifting our perspective and aligning our bodies with God's truth. Throughout the episode, Sue provides practical resources to enhance our healing journey. Aimee Elizabeth Semple McPherson (née Kennedy; October 9, 1890 – September 27, 1944), also known as Sister Aimee or Sister, was a Canadian Pentecostal evangelist and media celebrity in the 1920s and 1930s, famous for founding the Foursquare Church. McPherson pioneered the use of broadcast mass media for wider dissemination of both religious services and appeals for donations, using radio to draw in both additional audience and revenue with the growing appeal of popular entertainment and incorporating stage techniques into her weekly sermons at Angelus Temple, an early megachurch. Our theme song was written and performed by Anna Bosnick. If you'd like to support the show on a per episode basis, you can find our Patreon page here. Be sure to check our website for more details.
For the first time on a podcast, scholar of Mormonism Cristina Rosetti discusses her Pentecostal background here on Mormon Book Reviews! Cristina shares her experience of converting to the Foursquare Church as a teenager. For a while she wanted to become the next Aimee Semple McPherson, the female founder of the denomination. Cristina recounts the fascinating history of McPherson and the church. She also describes witnessing speaking in tongues, healings, and an exorcism! We then discuss her "Born Again" conversion to the Catholic Faith. We then talk about how she got interested in Mormon Fundamentalism via her study of 19th Century communitarian religious groups. This led her to specialize in the Study of the History and Lived Experience of Mormon Fundamentalism. What makes Cristina's approach so unique is rather than focus on Polygamy, she became enamored with the doctrines of Fundamentalism. Especially Adam/God. Next week she and Moroni Lopez Jessop will be giving a special presentation at Sunstone, it is previewed here. I want to thank Cristina for coming on sharing with the audience some of her favorite books and telling her story.

Ken and Kenny share how they used to preach about Mary as Protestant pastors, why they used to think about her that way, and what it was that began to open their hearts to start thinking of Mary as more than just a background character in the Bible.
